IMAGE I’ve always had a passion for image based design. Images alone sometimes provoke thought or are just generally there to be enjoyed and this is what I love in particular. Making myself aware of what other image based designers are doing within the industry has encouraged my own unique style so that I stand out from a competative area. Many of the designers that I follow are freelance due to the nature of image based design. This publication will explore all the elements that I love most about image and the people who have influenced me throughout my time on the course that I will continue to follow in the future.

APPLIED IMAGE As my personal practice has developed I’ve gotten really into applied image because before I used to create imagery but never for a significant purpose. Applied image has formed the basis of many of my most recent briefs and I’ve had a real chance to explore different objects and materials that imagery can be applied to. I’ve been hugely influenced by pattern design in particular and exploring ways in which they can be used to create a range.

GRAPHIC ART Although I don’t currently produce much of my own graphic art, I am still hugely influenced by what other designers are creating in the sense that informs my approach to image based design. One of my favourite aspects to this is the fact each designer has a unique style and approach to their work so there is always so much to look at in terms of what is being produced. I like graphic art in particular because it can just be enjoyed and doesn’t need to have a meaning. Designers tend to have quite a humorous approach to it sometimes too so it’s enjoyable.

HAND RENDERED Throughout my personal practice, the majority of the time, I like to utilise a hand rendered approach to my work so that it has an obvious unique style. I felt this needed to be a seperate category within the publication because it’s of great importance to me with it being a selling point of my work. I like to use of a range of materials when hand rendering artwork and follow other designers work for inspiration in techniques. Although my personal approach means I create quite basic drawings, I’m a huge fan of more detailed works too and aspire to increase my ability to this standard.

DESIGN STUDIOS Strictly image based design studios seem to be few and far between but this year in particular I’ve found quite a few that appeal to my personal design tastes to follow. Finding these studios has given me influence in the styles of work they are producing but also made me more aware of where I could fit in within the industry. Some of the work produced by these studios has linked to my personal practice this year too so I’ve been able to see how others interpret similar briefs to mine and gain inspiration from this.

FREELANCERS The majority of the designers I follow tend to be freelance due to the nature of image based design. This is another area that has made me aware of where I could fit in within the industry but I’ve also seen it to be very competative and not always rewarding. The people who are out there doing it however, are producing some fantastic work and each have their own unique edge to be easily recognised. Being freelance creates a bit more freedom to do exactly what you love. I’ve found contacting freelancers to be very useful too because I’ve had more responses this way and they are always willing to have a good chat so I’ve made some really good contacts that could be useful in the future.
