Hi there, I’m Kirsty.

The Brief

The Concept

The Design

This brief is an extension of a 2012/13 YCN Student Awards brief for UK Greetings. The aim of the brief was to design a range of greetings cards based upon anything, from birthdays to Christmas to Thank you cards. The target audience was also just as open as the designs, which meant this brief was a great opportunity to have some fun.

I chose Love as a concept for my range of cards as I have recently experienced this for myself. I wanted to show my own interpretation of love through my designs. So I have created a range that is all about the fun in love and some of the cheesy things people say. I have given myself a target audience of 16-30 year old males and females.

I wanted to use illustration in this brief as I felt it would not only work well with the concept but hand drawn illustration would give the cards a more personal touch. The design concept was to use a love heart in every design that would link the range together (hence the ranges name). The illustrations are based upon cheesy love puns and I have also created a typeface to use on the cards.

ONE/FIVE

Hi there, I’m Kirsty.

I decided to extend the brief given by YCN to create a whole range of products: - Greetings cards, big and small - Gift bags - Gift wrap - Gift boxes - A POS stand

For the product range I created four patterns based on the small love heart that is on all of the greeting card designs to keep consistency throughout. The designs have then been used for gift wrap, boxes and bags. I have tried to keep the product range quite simple but true to the concept. I wanted the range to be something that would be sold as high end products in shops such as Paper chase and Scribbler.

The product range, including the greetings cards, all have red foiling on them. This was to highlight the concept of the little red love heart. It adds a special touch and elegance to the products which would appeal to my target audience.

TWO/FIVE

Hi there, I’m Kirsty.

These boxes were crafted using Origami so again have been kept very simple. They have a red card base and the love heart pattern printed for the top. They come with white tissue paper inside and are wrapped in ribbon and a tag that simply says ‘with love’. The gift boxes are big enough for a braclet or a small gift and then the gift bags and gift wrap could be used for larger gifts.

The beauty of making the gift boxes using an Origami technique means that they can be made in different sizes very easily as they are made from folding the card, yet they are still as sturdy as using glue. It also means that another personal touch has been put into the crafting of the product range which fits well with the concept of love.

THREE/FIVE

Hi there, I’m Kirsty.

The idea behind the designs of the cards was to create something that represented love in a comical way. The illustrations and use of puns does this. I came up with this idea from listening to the song ‘I’m sticking with you’ by Velvet Underground, me and my partner play this to eachother for fun. The glue design came from this song, it visually represents the pun and the little foiled love heart directly shows the love.

The same goes with the other 3 designs, the hand drawn illustrations visually represent the pun. It makes the designs very light hearted and appealing. If I were to extend this brief even further, the possibilities would be endless with the love puns, which is why I think it works so well.

The cards have been printed onto 300gsm white card bought from the library and the red envelopes were purchased from Hobby Craft. The cards come in two different sizes, A6 and 10x10 squares and would be sold in cellophane bags.

FOUR/FIVE

Hi there, I’m Kirsty.

This is the final range of products together , they work well together and the concept is kept consistent throughout the designs.

I have also designed a POS stand for the greetings cards that would be used in a shop. The design has been kept simple like the product range. It uses the same little foiled heart and is printed onto 300gsm white card.
