PERFACE The All India Coordinated Research Project on maize was the first project launched in 1957 under the series ofAICRPs led by ICAR, New

Delhi. Since its inception, concerted efforts have been directed towards enhancing the productivity, profitability and competitiveness of maize and maize based farming systems. The Directorate of Maize Research, New Delhi, has been playing a vital role in coordinating the R & D activities across the country towards the development and release of

superior cultivars-hybrids and composites as well as improved crop management practices. As many as 68 public-bred hybrids and 98 composites have been released for cultivation in India. In the era of Intellectual Property Rights, documented evidence on pedigree, characteristic features, area of adoption, etc of these cultivars is required so as to establish their identity. Hence, it became pertinent to compile the relevant information in the form of a bulletin. The list of maize hybrids

and composites bred since 1961 has been presented in this bulletin. We have tried our best to incorporate information from the centres wherever available. If any information is left-out, it would be added in the future publications. It is but natural that the list would be upgraded as and when new information is made available. We hope this bulletin is useful for maize researchers, students, extension workers, etc.

INTRODUCTION Maize, (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important cereals of the world including India. It is a source of human food (26%), animal feed (11%), poultry feed (48%), industrial products (12%), starch (1%) and seed (2%), respectively. The growth rate of maize in terms of production (4.2%), productivity (2.1%) and area (2.2%) has shown a remarkable increase over the years. This linear growth trend witnessed has been associated with the development and availability of improved genotypes and crop managements practices. As a consequence, maize contributes nearly 7% to the food basket of the country annually. The All India Coordinated Research Project on Maize (AICRPM) was the first project started in 1957 under the AICRPs led by the ICAR, New Delhi. Under its aegis, concerted efforts have been directed towards the development and release of improved cultivars and agro-technologies. Initially the research thrust was laid on the breeding of double cross hybrids. This was followed by a switch - over to composites in mid to late 1960s. During this period a slump in the overall production of maize in our country was witnessed which prompted the policy makers to initiate new research programmes. Accordingly, there has been reemphasis on hybrid breeding technology especially 2-parent hybrids since 1989. This change in strategy has paid rich dividends in terms of the development and release of high yielding single cross hybrids with resistance / tolerant to various biotic and abiotic stresses. So far, 68 hybrids and 98 composites have been released for cultivation for different parts of the country. In speciality corn, six QPM hybrids namely, HQPM 1, HQPM 5, Shaktiman 1, 2, 3 and 4 have been released. A baby corn hybrid HM 4 has also been released for cultivation. The sweet corn composites include Madhuri, Priya and Win Orange Sweet Corn, respectively. The pop corn varieties released are as follows - Amber Pop, Jawahar Pop Corn 11 etc. A complete list of Hybrids and Composites developed and released for cultivation in India from 1961 - 2007 and 1967 - 2007 respectively, is compiled in this bulletin. Information on the pedigree, contributing centres, year of release, area of adoption and characteristic features has also been given.
