MAKING SMALL FARMS ECONOMICALLY VIABLE THROUGH INTEGRATED FARMING IN SUGARCANE BASED PRODUCTIONSYSTEM

(A CASE STUDY)

p a ugarcane based production system is one of the important production systems operating in the . I

agro-eco system. Sugarcanebased production system comprises of sugarcane, coconut and hnana as the main component crops and brinial, tomato and chillies as minor component crops. cash crop, sugarcane and banana are highly vulnerable to price fluduotion in the an annual crop, it yields income once in a year. The investment on these crops for a year without yielding any fruits. To compensate these losses the farmers are growing wetables to get weekly income. The money obtained from these crops and from dairy enterprises ire ploughadin the investmentsof cash crops. The intercrops and fodder cropssuch as fodder maize, and fodder cowpea are grown for the purposeof feeding the cattle. mpiw

The area of the farm is 5.89 acres (2.536 hectares). In this, he has a farm house which occupies 3 cents, a cattle shed in 2 cents and a open well cum bore well in 10 cents. The depth of the well is 200 feet giving 2 inch water for 4 hours every day. The water is sufficient to irrigate 0.5 acre per day. It will take 10daysto irrigate the entire farm.

isinterestingto notethat he is not having angbig farm implementssuchas tractor, trailer, powe' and bullocks. He has very minor farm implements such as crowbar, spade, hand hoe a

- bamboo baskets. For all the farm operations he is engaging hired implements, thereby he avo1 heavy investmentson farm machinery and avoids maintenance and operatingcosts also. , . : . , . ,, , j , ' I ' , /

Sugarcane is grown in 1.5 acres. The variety under cultivation is Co 86032. Previously he wr growing the variety Co 62175. After the operation of IVLP, he has completely removed the o variety and started cultivatingCo 86032 mainly for high iaggery yield and getting high prices due. good jaggery tolour.
