HISTORY The Serendib Touring Ltd., which was incorporated in 1973, to manage Hotel Serendib, Bentota, subsequently expanded its portfolio to include a total of seven hotels, which included Club Hotel Dolphin, Hotel Sigiriya and Hotel Serendib, (three hotels owned by the group), while the rest were managed on behalf of other owners. Hemas Holdings Ltd. which invested heavily in the hotel’s holding company, appointed Mr. Abbas Esufally in 1999, as the Chairman of the company (on retirement of their founder Chairman Mr. Asker Moosajee).

A new corporate identity was unveiled in 2000, followed by an image building campaign, with the name of the company being changed to Serendib Leisure Management Ltd. The company ceased managing all non-owned hotels, retaining only the management of the three above mentioned properties. Extensive refurbishment programmes were carried out over the past few years and all the three hotels can proudly hold their own, in their respective categories as popular, 3 to 4 star hotels. In August 2010, the Serendib Leisure Group of hotels and Minor International Public Co., Ltd. jointly acquired Kani Lanka Resort & Spa. Both Kani Lanka Resort & Spa and Hotel Serendib were rebranded as AVANI Kalutara Resort & Spa and AVANI Bentota Resort & Spa respectively and are managed by Serendib Leisure Management Limited. Continuing the successful partnership, Serendib Leisure Group of hotels and Minor International launched the luxury brand “Anantara” with the opening of the Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort in December 2015 on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The second Anantara branded resort – the Anantara Kalutara Resort is scheduled for opening in April 2016.

LEISURE Sri Lanka was granted Independence in 1948, the same year that Hemas Holdings was incorporated. It engages in a diverse set of business activities, focused on Healthcare, Personal Care, Leisure, Transportation, Power and Strategic Investments. Hemas Holdings became a Public Quoted company in October 2003. The Hemas Leisure Sector principally consists of an Inbound Tour Operations / Destination Management Company (DMC) and Hotel Operations sector. The sector provides a comprehensive range of leisure services to foreign clients. The Group’s flagship business Hemtours enjoys a strategic partnership with Diethelm Travel Group and is one of the leading DMCs in Sri Lanka, having affiliations with some of the largest Tour Operators from Germany and UK. As at August 2011, the Hemas Group has a shareholding of 51% in Serendib Hotels PLC (the owning company of AVANIi Bentota Resort & Spa). Serendib Hotels PLC in turn holds 62% of Hotel Sigiriya PLC (the owning company of Hotel Sigiriya, Sigiriya), 65% of Dolphin Hotels PLC (the owning company of Club Hotel Dolphin, Waikkal) and 19.9% of Jada Resort & Spa (the Owning company of AVANI Kalutara Resort & Spa). All are public quoted companies trading in the Colombo Stock Exchange except Jada Resort & Spa (Pvt.) Ltd. Serendib Leisure Management Ltd is 100% owned subsidiary company of Serendib Hotels PLC.

The hotel Arm of Hemas Holdings is in partnership with Minor International Public Co., Ltd., a leading conglomerate in Thailand which owns international hotel brands Anantara Resorts and AVANI Resorts. This successful partnership continues to grow in strength with the launch of the Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort in December 2015 and the Anantara Kalutara Resort in April 2016, bringing the total room strength to 706 keys covering the cities of Bentota, Kalutara, Waikkal, Sigiriya, and Tangalle.
