art of the cultural triangle.
The Kalundewa Retreat is an idyllic hide-away nestled in 100 acres of land in Dambulla, part of a rural village nearly 150km from the Colombo city. Fill your senses with matchless views and a whole different lifestyle. The retreat in itself is also a form of sustenance to a rural village and its farming community. It is truly a haven for those seeking to commune with nature and enjoy the privacy afforded by professional and well-trained staff. Enjoy wide open spaces, a natural spring, a lake and a thriving vegetable garden that is an essential part of the retreat. We are humbled and overjoyed that Kalundewa Retreat won multiple awards during the short period it has been in operation.
...This is truly paradise on earth.
Kalundewa Retreat - Natures best kept secret Ancient Sri Lanka was once known as the ‘Granary of Asia’. Its bountiful rice harvest and other grain varieties not only fed the natives but also those of neighbouring countries across the seas. Dambulla, a part of the cultural triangle, is an important landmark of the island nation, illustrating a concept combining the Lake, the Temple and the Village; on which the Sri Lankan rural culture was built. Kalundewa Retreat too was created on these fundamentals of harmony between man and nature, blending Agriculture with Tourism and preserving its ecological balance.

Our Commitment Protecting & preserving the environment is a core-commitment. We have kept to just a few bedroom units in a land extent of 100 acres whilst maintaining a minimum human footprint. We will ensure that we will not trespass into natures territory nor violate their rights in anyway. We have minimized any adverse impact to the life of the area including birds, insects & fish species living in the surrounding waterways; as well as trees & creepers. We will eventually convert our farmlands to be 100% organic, applying safe, traditional and modern farming technology in order to provide the best advantage for all species of flora & fauna that thrive here!
Solar Energy Harvester - More than 50% of our electricity is harvested through solar panels. We look forward to extending
this commitment in the future to make it a memorable holiday for our guests by using more renewable energy.
Wind mill powered water pump - Part of our agricultural land is irrigated by ground water pumped through a windmill. This is located closer to the‘Ulpatha’; our natural spring swimming pool.
Organic Fruit Garden - Kalundewa Retreat has one of the largest collections of culinary herbal plants and varieties of fruit trees in one location in Sri Lanka, with vegetables cultivated for meals at the retreat. Guests have the option to visit the garden with our Chef to learn about the local vegetables, and also select some to include in meals.
Our Lakes - Kalundewa Retreat is blessed with many waterways. We are delighted to say that they have been restored from derelict conditions and have been fortified and reconstructed to irrigate the land for agriculture. Expertise for this project was sought from a group who were part of the Mahaweli Diversion Scheme; Sri Lanka’s largest irrigation and hydropower project.
Uplifting the Community - Kalundewa Retreat lives in harmony not only with its natural environment but also with its local
community who are mostly farmers who make a living farming in our lands. Rice is grown in the Maha season from October to March and other crops during theYala season, from April to September. The retreat arranges free Medical Clinics with specialist doctors from Colombo at regular intervals for the benefit of farmers and their families. The retreat plans to launch a program to educate farmers who suffer from Chronic Kidney Failure due to the use of harmful chemical fertilizer.
