KIT GUSTAVSON
hi I am an interior designer that loves the user-based factor that interiors brings. I take a logical approach to problem solving in design, but also have strong concepts and am detail-oriented. In my personal life as well as my work, I value ethics most highly in any scenario.

CAT CAFE & ANIMAL SHELTER || 2019 • what would animal centric design look like • how can the cat cafe typology be expanded to help with animal overflow from the “no-kill city” trend • help get animals that are less likely to be adopted into forever homes

This Socialization-Based Animal Shelter will be an integral part of a growing animal care hub that exists in Olde Kensington/Fishtown. This site would specialize in cats and small animals, as those are the animals that would do best in this urban-suburban area with no real dog parks nearby. Philadelphia as a city was planned when cars were not available, and is therefore already situated to be a walking city. Foot traffic is important to this program, because a changing exterior scenery helps immensely with socialization. Choosing a site that could support the intense equipment needs that an animal shelter requires was also paramount. The solution came with the idea of edge, to focus on the industrial-type buildings that are on the fringes of large cities. This location would allow for maximum foot traffic while still supporting the mechanical needs.
