from the director Librarians Inspire Early Childhood Success Early learning has always been the cornerstone of the library. Empowering a child’s first teacher—caregivers, Jill Jean, Library Director parents and daycare providers—we supply vital preliteracy tools and guidance and prepare kids for Kindergarten success. At storytimes, our youth services librarians use movement, song and rhymes to teach children letters, vocabulary and narrative skills and begin to foster a lifelong love of reading and learning. As more is discovered about how children ages 0-5 learn, it is becoming clear that not only are these pre-literacy skills critical to early development, the building of essential STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) skills early on set a child up for a lifetime of learning success. Recently, one of our newest Youth Services librarians, Ashlie Bergeron, sent me some of the highlights from her latest “Exploration Station” preschool class which focused on medicine, first aid and the body.

She writes, “Each child received a lab coat (a white adult t-shirt cut down the front) and a clipboard

Opportunities like these fostering curiosity and discovery and allow a child to be at the center of their

with a chart attached. They were encouraged to record basic data— height, weight, and eye color. Some children took to it so much that they started asking the caregivers (and myself). Children were also given a patient to treat with Band-Aids that matched their ailments.

learning experience. By giving them more opportunities for learning through play, we activate their natural curiosity and allow them to be active participants in their own learning through investigation and exploration.

We also had a blood lab available, consisting of water beads (red blood cells), ping pong balls (white blood cells), and red craft foam pieces (platelets). We discussed how all parts of blood work together by performing different interconnected tasks, which is spectacular for parts/ whole thinking. One child had told her mother only hours before coming to the program that she wanted to be a veterinarian when she grew up—which served her well at this month’s program! She had a great time diagnosing, treating, and comforting the “injured” animals.”

So, the next time you are in any of our branches be sure and meet our great youth services librarians. They are not only making sure Kitsap’s preschoolers are ready for kindergarten—they are making some unforgettable memories!

Library Lifeline Yvonne Hatfield, 98, races through 15 mysteries and autobiographies a month. Former Boeing engineer Ken Fugami, 75, eagerly awaits the latest Jonathan Kellerman novels and reads up on Vietnam and the Japanese internment. And 87-year-old Barbara Robinson concentrates on nonfiction, researching articles for the newsletter she writes and edits for the Washington Veterans Home, where she’s a resident. This trio are patrons of Kitsap Regional Library’s free home delivery service, which provides books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs and more to approximately 200 people a month who have significant barriers to accessing the Library. "The 48-year-old program is much more than a delivery service", said Library Associate Tim Hayden, who joined the staff in August to accommodate increased demand. “It’s a connection to the community, especially in circumstances where many of our patrons could become isolated.”

10

Mar.Apr.May 2019

Hatfield, who formerly ran the Library’s bookmobile and has been using the delivery service for 22 years, agreed. “It means so much to me because there’s no way I can get out and go places, and the Library (associate) always comes and visits with me when she brings the bag of books.”

“It means so much to me because there’s no way I can get out and go places….” – Yvonne Hatfield

Hayden is one of three staffers who deliver more than 3,000 items a month to patrons of the program. About half are nursing home residents. “I always get thanked. People really appreciate that we’re bringing the items out and stopping by. And I get phone calls leading up to the visit day, just checking to see if I’m coming.” Mobile Services Manager Jomichele Seidl said many in the outreach program are long-time Library users. “Often, they have relationships with the Library that have gone on for decades. We’re just providing them with the next phase.” While many who take advantage of the program are seniors – including a handful of people who are more than

100 years old – the service is open to all ages. Anyone who has a physical or psychological barrier to visiting the Library can apply online at KRL.org/ home-delivery or by speaking with a staff member at any Library location. Users of the service receive their Library materials in sturdy grocery-style fabric bags once a month. Some patrons request specific authors, genres or titles. Others let staff choose. During each delivery, a Library associate brings new materials, picks up the previous month’s selections and seeks feedback on how well they've met expectations. One patron goes through 70 DVDs a month while battling insomnia. Another loves all types of books involving dogs. And a crafting maven with an apartment full of yarn is excited to get how-to books.

Can't come to the Library? We can help! Choose your own materials from our catalog or let our staff members recommend titles for you. Get a monthly “We have some patrons who get three to four bags (of materials) a month and they get through them,” noted Library Associate Liz Ochoa. “They can’t do much else. They read, they listen to music and they watch movies. And we bring it all to them.” Karen Moreno, who also staffs the program, said the Library representatives and patrons build close relationships. One of her patrons is a 103-year-old woman in a Bainbridge Island nursing home. “Every time she sees me, she just lights up. It’s absolutely magic.” During one of Moreno’s visits, the woman was seated at a table and engaged in a group activity when the Library associate arrived. “Once she registers who I am, she immediately stands up and announces, ‘This is my Library lady and I have to go.’ We were out the door in seconds.” Fugami, the former Boeing engineer who loves histories and mysteries, is also a patron of Moreno’s and a fan. “She’s been very patient with me,” he said. “I’m kind of picky, but she can focus in on certain topics you’re interested in.”

On a recent morning, he was reading “Code Girls,” a nonfiction account of American women who served as codebreakers during World War II. Moreno had delivered it along with CDs of the “30 Greatest Orchestral Works” and a towering stack of mysteries. A resident of the veterans home, Fugami has been a cheerleader for the delivery service, writing about it in the home’s newsletter and convincing other residents to sign up. “You can’t beat it,” he said. “It’s door-to-door service.” Robinson, the newsletter editor and nonfiction enthusiast, is one of Fugami’s recruits and his activism is having a ripple effect. Robinson loves the program so much, she has signed up two people herself and pushed to have a home delivery application added to the new-resident packet.

delivery of books, audiobooks, DVDs or CDs selected just for you by our staff members. Who can apply? Home Delivery service is available to individuals with significant barriers to using their Library location, including convalescing individuals, residents of retirement homes, adult care homes and assisted living facilities. There is not a time limit on these services. Please note that lack of transportation alone does not qualify an individual for Home Delivery. How do I sign up? There are three ways to sign up for Home Delivery. 1.

Apply online at KRL.org

2. Print out the application and mail it in 3. Speak with a Library staff member at any Library location

“I love it. I love it,” she said. “And the best thing about it is they bring everything here. New residents are really going to enjoy this.”

Talk...about the changes you see outside. Spring is the beginning of the growing season. Take a walk and ask your child what is different or new about the bushes and trees. Can they spot any green shoots pushing up through the dirt? What are some differences between winter and spring? If you planted any bulbs in the fall, have they sprouted?

Sing...a song with moment and imagery. “I Planted a Little Seed” (Sing to: “I’m a Little Teapot”) I planted a little seed in the ground. (pretend to plant a seed and tamp down the dirt with feet) Out comes the sun, big and round. (make a big circle with arms and raise over your head) Down come the raindrops soft and slow. (hold arms straight in the air and slowly lower hands while wiggling fingers) Up comes the flower grow, grow, grow! (squat down and slowly stand up while raising arms up and out to form a tulip shape)

Read...a story about spring. “In Spring for Sophie” by Yael Werber, where a little girl’s parents encourage her to use her five senses to discover spring. Do your family’s activities match any of Sophie’s? What do you hear, see, smell, touch and taste when you go outside?

Play...with nature. Gather samples of mud, potting soil, feathers and cotton balls (for clouds). Let your child feel the different textures and discuss the feeling of each item. Use more than one word to describe each thing: squishy, grainy, rough, damp, moist, bumpy, soft, fluffy. Does potting soil feel different when you touch it with your elbow or toes than when you touch it with your fingers?

Write...with clouds. Look at clouds and talk about what you see. Do you see letters, animals, plants, pictures? Help your child use cotton balls to write their name. Encourage them to make pictures using the cotton balls. Read “It Looked Like Spilt Milk” by Charles G. Shaw for more ideas.

Early Learning Kits Parents and caregivers; support your role as your child’s first teacher and promote school readiness. Each kit is themed with books, educational toys and an activity guide. With 20 kits to choose from, you can pick up a new kit each week to make learning fun! Ages 3 to 7. Search for "Early Learning Kit" in the catalog to check one out.
