Many memorable stories came out of this year’s Summer Learning program, including the almost 100-year-old patron posing in her 100-Hour Reader T-shirt (“Reading Is My Superpower”) or the 5-year-old who wanted to spend the summer making a robot with her mom — and she did! Carmine’s Calling

An Open Book The Inspiring Story of a Children’s Librarian

A

child squeals in shock while another giggles with delight as the plot thickens, reactions to the story they are enjoying today. Moments later, 100 hands are up, dancing in the air, and a chorus of tiny voices starts to sing. The “Itsy-Bitsy Spider” rings through the Library. It’s a typical Monday morning in Carmine’s storytime class. For almost 10 years, Carmine Rau has had the “awesome job” of leading storytime as the Children’s Librarian at Kitsap Regional Library on Bainbridge Island. In libraries across Kitsap, storytime is much more than stories. It is a place to learn, grow and connect with other families. “I love that you know my children’s names. This is like a second home to us,” shared one parent. Carmine can relate. For her, the library has always been home. Growing up, Carmine lived in a home without electricity or running water, in conditions of poverty some might consider shocking for the United States. At the library, Carmine found a welcome refuge and an escape into other worlds through books. It was here that she met Judy DuPuis, her librarian. Where others saw Carmine’s future as one of little hope, Miss DuPuis was on her side, giving her the encouragement she needed to overcome the hurdles life presented. Carmine recalls she was in second grade when she decided she wanted to be a librarian. By the age of 15, she had started working as a page in her local library. When it came time to plan for her future, Carmine approached her school counselor sharing her dream of going to Stanford. Her counselor responded with laughter. But, Carmine knew better. Her librarians were there, believing in her. They encouraged her to go after her dream,

providing the motivation and guidance she needed to apply for college and financial aid. Through stories, Carmine learned how to imagine a better future for herself. Librarians showed her the way. To Carmine, being a librarian is more than a job — it’s a calling. She feels she is continuing the good work of librarians that have come before her, providing encouragement and believing in those that need it most. Carmine loves being a part of a long tradition of storytellers. “For thousands of years, stories have been used for education,” she says. Using puppets and props, Carmine has lead thousands of stories. “Storytime, especially with all the associated activities, plays an important part in child development and kindergarten readiness. It helps build social and motor skills, increases vocabulary and offers an example of how to share books with children in a way that engages them with the text. All the singing and rhyming we do has tremendous

benefit for early literacy, preparing the kids to one day soon become great readers themselves.” Carmine cherishes her stories. Funny stories of children not wanting to let go of the weekly Pajama Storytime when they grew too old, or heart-warming stories the parents have shared with her because they see her as a trusted person in their lives. “Recently, a boy who is a regular at our library had a Cub Scout project where he was supposed to trace his hand and write in the names of some ‘safe’ adults in his life on the fingers,” recounted Carmine. “He listed the names of teachers, family friends and me. It was a great honor to be listed with these other beloved people in his life.” These are the stories that matter most and why Carmine became a children’s librarian. The schedule for our early literacy classes can be found on the back of Inspire. Visit Carmine, or one of our other fabulous children’s librarians, soon!

Online, Right Now

Using Your Library You don’t need a library card if you want to come to one of our locations to hang out, use a computer, read a newspaper or take a class, but it helps to have a card if you want to check out an item and enjoy it at home or enjoy the perks of our Digital Library at KRL.org.

Your Library Card You can apply for a card online (KRL.org/cards) or at any library location. Be sure to bring an ID or proof of residence. Your library card gives you access to nine locations, the bookmobile and our website. You can return all items you borrow at any of our locations.

Welcome to the Library Online We can’t be open all hours, but our website is. Your library card and your password allow you to establish an online account that brings the Library right to your computer or mobile device. There’s a lot to explore and be inspired by at KRL.org: free music to download, ebooks to enjoy, magazines to peruse. The choices are virtually endless.

Your Card’s Privacy and Responsibilities Your Library is open to all. Your account is not. We’ll not disclose your account history to anyone. Period. If you want a spouse or family member to be able to pick up items for you, please tell us in advance.

Not on the Shelf? We want you to get what you want. So, you can place a hold on any item in our collection by making a “hold request” online, by phone or at your favorite location. What if we don’t have what you want in our collection? No problem. You can request

How to Volunteer Volunteering Your Time We encourage you to join our team — we often need help with tutoring, providing library support at our different locations or helping with system-wide projects and events. If you have special interests or talents, we want to know about it. We are all about having your volunteering experience at Kitsap Regional Library be both fun and purposeful.

Fines & Fees

Continued from Page 3

If you sign up for email or text notification, you’ll receive a reminder three days before your items are due. If you’re late returning an item, there’s a charge of 25 cents per day per item. Maximum overdue fine is $5 per item. If an item is more than 10 days late, you’ll get a notification. If the item is more than 21 days late, the Library will consider it missing and will bill your account. If you owe more than $25 or a missing item, your account will need to be brought current to continue to borrow materials. Come in and discuss it with us and we’ll work to figure out a solution together.

use Blender, an open source computer graphics animation program, to “create a shark, a castle, a sword and a realistic watch.” In 2016, Kitsap Regional Library will be focusing our work on several key goals that will continue to support our success and growth. In the spring, we will open the new library in Kingston, dramatically changing library service in the north end of our county. A design for a “nature smart” library in Silverdale will set a new standard for what a community library can be in Kitsap County. Summer Learning will continue to expand learning opportunities for all of our citizens. And Library staff will be working with our communities to assess what services they want from their public libraries. Visit us soon. Let us inspire you to take that first step, find that new job, be your child’s first teacher or become more digitally literate. We want to be your source of inspiration. — Jill Jean

Creating New Stories

Central Kitsap & Kingston Kingston

Have you seen the building going up at the Kingston Village Green? It’s a new community center and it will be the new home of Kitsap Regional Library in Kingston. Along with the Library, the building will also be the home of Kingston’s Boys & Girls Club, a senior center, commercial kitchen, technology lab and multiple meeting rooms. We recently had the opportunity to tour the work site. Walls are already up and there is a roof overhead! We are eager to

12

Dec.Jan.Feb. 2015-2016

introduce our community to its new library in Kingston, expected May 2016.

Central Kitsap

We have met our first major milestone for a new library in Silverdale. Thanks to a library lover on Bainbridge Island and First Federal Community Foundation, we have the funds to purchase the extraordinary site along the Clear Creek trail on Bucklin Hill Road. For more information go to KRL.org/newlibrary.

Live Chat – We offer 24/7 online help, staffed by librarians from around the world. By Phone or in Person – You can call any of our locations or drop in to ask a question. Our locations and hours are listed on Page 2. BookMatch - Can’t decide on what to read next? Tell us about a few books you’ve read and enjoyed and we’ll send you a personalized book list. KRL.org/bookmatch

Make an Appointment Do you have questions about your computer, phone or tablet? Are you a small-business owner and want to know how the Library can help you market your business? Are you researching your family tree and need help getting back one more generation? We’re happy to schedule a face-to-face meeting with the person who can help you best. KRL.org/make-appointment
