What Conversations Can We Spark?
‘T
he Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving” by Bainbridge Island author Jonathan Evison is Kitsap Regional Library’s One Book, One Community selection for 2015. Each year, it is our hope that this program will encourage everyone in Kitsap County to share the experience of reading and discussing a single book. Titles are chosen that are discussable, thought-provoking and worthy of a community conversation. Whenever possible, preference is given to choosing a Northwest author and/or featuring a Northwest subject. Developed back in 1998, this program was started by Nancy Pearl at Seattle Public Library’s Washington Jill Jean Center for the Book. Called “If All Library Director of Seattle Read the Same Book,” the program took the idea of a I believe that localized book discussion club and Kitsap readers expanded it to the whole city. The are in for a treat first book chosen for the Seattle when they join Reads program was Russell Bank’s this remarkable “The Sweet Hereafter.” Since this road trip with a time, many cities have copied the idea, with more than 400 programs cast of flawed occurring in 2007 alone. but endearing Jonathan Evison has crafted a characters novel of the heart, a novel of unlikely heroes traveling through a grand American landscape, a story that offers a profound look into what it takes to truly care for another person. Bursting with energy and filled with moments of absolute beauty, Evison is a master at showing us that no matter how prepared you are, life rarely goes as planned. This bighearted and inspired novel ponders life’s terrible surprises as well as its immeasurable rewards. I believe that Kitsap readers are in for a treat when they join this remarkable road trip with a cast of flawed but endearing characters. This book will lift you up while breaking your heart. I hope you will join us in enjoying this year’s community conversation about “The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving.” — Jill Jean

Using Your Library
What’s Happening — Right Now
You don’t need a Library card if you want to come to one of our locations to hang out, use a computer, read a newspaper or take a class, but it helps to have a card if you want to check out an item and enjoy it at home or enjoy the perks of our Digital Library at KRL.org.
19
Your Library Card You can apply for a card online (KRL.org/cards) or at any library location. Be sure to bring an ID or proof of residence. Your Library card gives you access to nine locations, the bookmobile and our website. You can return all items you borrow at any of our locations.
Welcome to the Library Online We can’t be open all hours, but our website is. Your Library card and your password allow you to establish an online account that brings the Library right to your computer or mobile device. There’s a lot to explore and be inspired by at KRL.org: free music to download, ebooks to enjoy, magazines to peruse. The choices are virtually endless.
Your Card’s Privacy & Responsibilities Your Library is open to all. Your account is not. We’ll not disclose your account history to anyone. Period. If you want a spouse or family member to be able to pick up items for you, please tell us in advance.
Not on the Shelf? We want you to get what you want. So you can place a hold on any item in our collection by making a “hold request” online, by phone or at your favorite location. What if we don’t have what you want in our collection? No problem. You can request
20 the purchase of an item. Go to KRL.org/ requests and tell us what you’re looking for. Many times, we’ll buy a copy just because you asked for it. If we can’t buy one, we’ll try to borrow a copy from another library.
21 22
You Can Keep It for … 3 Weeks Books, magazines, music, DVDs (four hours or longer) 1 Week
DVDs
Renew
If no one is waiting for your item, you may renew it three times.
Fines & Fees If you sign up for email or text notification, you’ll receive a reminder three days before your items are due. If you’re late returning an item, there’s a charge of 25 cents per day per item. Maximum overdue fine is $5 per item. If an item is more than 10 days late, you’ll get a notification. If the item is more than 21 days late, the Library will consider it missing and will bill your account. If you owe more than $25 or a missing item, your account will need to be brought current to continue to borrow materials. Come in and discuss it with us, and we’ll work to figure out a solution together.

Jonathan Evison ‘The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving’ ‘This novel probably has more of me and my own experience in it than anything else I’ve written.’ — Jonathan Evison
Each year, Kitsap Regional Library selects one title and invites the community to connect through a shared reading experience. For our 2015 selection, “The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving,” we are excited to have the opportunity to host Johnathan Evison in October for a number of events across Kitsap County. In anticipation of his visit, Evison talked with us about life, the writing process and his Kitsap connection.
Q
“Revised Fundamentals” seems like a very personal book. What kind of experiences did you draw on in writing it?
A
Well, irredeemable loss, for starters. The freak accidental death of my sister. The unexpected dissolution of my first marriage. Five years of caregiving experience. A lot of sojourns along the American backroads. An early mid-life crisis. Years of playing on the same men’s softball team. In short, a lot of stuff. This novel probably has more of me and my own experience in it than anything else I’ve written.
Q
Ben and Trevor have some vivid, and often hilarious, discussions about women and sex. Some readers might be put off by the topic or the language. What would you say to them?
A
I’d say they have a thing or two to learn about the masculine figure in crisis. Their flippant brand of misogyny is pretty transparent. They’re obviously both terrified of women. I wanted Ben and Trev to have to earn the respect of the reader, thus I wanted to paint them warts and all at the beginning so as the reader you could watch them grow. Continued on Page 11

Q A
It was quite a change from your previous book, “West of Here.”
I get bored otherwise. I’m doing things to discover myself, so I try to use every tool in my belt and a few I don’t have so that I can develop new ones. When I stop challenging myself, that’s probably when I stop writing. It’s all about discovery for me.
hours seem to yield more. In a perfect world, I wake up at 5 a.m. and work for about four or five hours. Then, before bed, I’ll put the red pen to the work one more time, and mark the hell out of the manuscript, so I have a solid starting point for the work the next morning at 5 a.m. Having two young kids has certainly forced me to be flexible and manage my time more effectively.
Q
Part of the fun of reading “The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving” is spotting the Kitsap County locations. Are they all real? Do you have a favorite?
Q
And your newest book, “This is Your Life, Harriet Chance,” has just come out. Can you say a little about it? Is it another turnabout?
A
Yeah, on the surface it is quite a bit different from previous books, but thematically, not so much. Despite all my books being very different, I only have a few themes, really, and one of them is reinvention. Harriet is a 79-year-old widow forced to reinvent herself, whereas, “West of Here” is about 130-year-old town trying to reinvent itself.
Some are real, most are amalgams. If I have a favorite, it’s Trev’s house, which is my pal Case Levinson’s house. It’s Case upon whom Trev is based, and to whom the book is dedicated. I worked as Case’s caregiver for a few years, and shared a lot of laughs in that living room.
Q A
Does living in Kitsap County influence your, hmmm, world view?
I’ve gotta think so. This place is a big part of my identity, and gracious, have the people of Kitsap County been supportive of my work. The bookstores, particularly Eagle Harbor Books, have been incredible in their support. The folks I went to high school with, the caregiving community, my neighbors, people who stop me on the street, so many people have been genuinely encouraging and supportive, that I feel blessed to live here in Kitsap County.
Q
You are so generous in making time to do events and readings. Is it helpful to you to meet with your readers?
A
Totally. I enjoy the conversation. I find that when I connect with my readers personally, they become incredibly supportive in terms of sharing my work with others. Also, for 20 years, I was basically writing in a vacuum — I mean, literally nobody was reading me, so I’m still working at a deficit in that regard.
Q
Many of our patrons are keenly interested in the writing process. Can you tell us a little about yours?
A
If I’m on the road, and I often am the past couple of years, I get very little done in the way of composition. So, I’ve developed workbooks comprised mostly of narrative questions that need to be answered in whatever I’m working on, or whatever I’m researching. This keeps me grounded, keeps my mind on the work, and allows me to make good use of flight time and layovers. By the time I get home and I sit down to compose, I have a really good idea what I’m trying to accomplish, so the

Q A Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts star in the film version, scheduled for 2016 release.
The movie is coming out soon, I hear. Do you have any inside scoop?
Well, as of this interview, I haven’t seen a rough cut yet, but I will have that opportunity any day now. I was fortunate enough to be on set for some of the filming, and I can say confidently that Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts have a great rapport that will do Ben and Trev justice.

One Book, One Community, Many Connections O
ne Book, One Community is an example of the Library’s many community-focused programs that are only possible through the generosity of donors. For one local resident, this program was the inspiration for her to become a donor for the first time. Donna Moreland, who lives in North Kitsap and is now a member of the Library’s Foundation Board of Directors, put it like this: “Growing up in Seattle, I remember Librarian Nancy Pearl talking about their version of One Book and I really liked the thought of everyone being connected by talking about the same book. When I moved to rural Kitsap County, everything was so spread out. Being a home-schooling mom just increased my feeling of isolation.
There was nothing that connected us from one end of the county to the other,” continued Donna. “When I heard that the Library had an annual One Book, One Community program, I knew it was something that I wanted to support.” One Book, One Community, Summer Learning, Third Graders to the Library, BiblioTEC (STEM technology training) and increased numbers of books and downloadables all happen thanks to donations and grants from our community. To learn more about the Foundation or to become a donor yourself, go to foundation.KRL.org. Have questions? We’d love to talk. Call us at (360) 475-9039. — Jaime Forsyth, Foundation Director

Central Kitsap: Creating New Stories
Kitsap Regional Library launched a capital campaign in May 2015 to build a new library in Silverdale. At this stage, the campaign is focused on engaging key library supporters and community leaders. A public campaign will be launched in 2017. The chosen site, located at the corner of Bucklin Hill and Blaine Avenue and adjacent to the Clear Creek trail,

will become a point of civic pride for a thriving community. The future library will boast more parking, bigger gathering spaces and an unprecedented connection to the natural environment. Central Kitsap is ready for a vibrant community gathering place that provides access to all and inspiration to learn, gather and create. For more information, go to krl.org/secure-the-site.
