ringing people together through the power of words. Building community. Developing an open platform to discuss hard issues. These are some of the lofty goals that Kitsap Regional Library established over a dozen years ago when we began our One Book, One Community program. This year, we have selected the book “Evicted,” by Matthew Desmond which follows eight Milwaukee families as they struggle to keep a roof over their heads. “Evicted” is not an easy book to read. This book has been called “unsettling” and “wrenching”, but also “achingly beautiful” and “magnificent.” However, through the reading of this book, it is our hope that we are all better able to process and understand some of the biggest and most difficult issues facing our society today: homelessness, housing insecurity

and social justice. We hope to bring a broader awareness to the experience of homelessness, that it is often a “cascade of many events, triggered by something as simple as a snowball thrown at a car by a small child.” It is within these discussions at our public libraries that I see hope for the future. When a book transforms our understanding of poverty or economic exploitation in such a way, I believe it is the beginning of discovering new solutions for complex problems. “Evicted” paints a vivid picture, while at the same time suggesting fresh ideas for solving one of this century’s most devastating challenges. During the month of February, there will be many opportunities for you to learn more about homelessness and housing insecurity. Attend a book group

discussion about “Evicted.” Bring your children to special storytimes designed around the themes of home and homelessness. Join a family work party to fill hygiene kits for local homeless teens, or come to a screening of the 2018 documentary, “Trickle Down Town,” about the homeless crisis in Seattle. In these shared experiences with fellow community members, may we all be reminded of “the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible” and how we, as informed individuals, can use our knowledge to begin to make a real difference.

eBook Notice Beginning Nov. 1, Macmillan Publishers will limit libraries to a single purchased copy of a new eBook title per library system. This embargo is being imposed for an eight week period, at which point libraries can purchase additional copies. Your ability to access these new Macmillan eBook titles for free from Kitsap Regional Library will be impacted; hold times will most likely increase and will not be consistent with your experience with the rest of our collection. We apologize for this impact to service and make a commitment to you, our patrons, that we will do our very best to adjust and limit the negative impact it will have on you.

One Book, One

Community

10

What is One Book? From December 2019 through March 2020, we select one book for our community to connect over a shared reading and learning experience. We hope this will pave the way for civic dialogue and community connection.

Hope is in the Conversation Conflict. The word alone can trigger feelings of unease and anxiety. In the arena of conflict, it can be easy to put up walls, disengage and shut down. It takes great vulnerability to share with others. If met with opposition or challenging words, conversations become uncomfortable and stifled. Often, when tension and frustration arise, people don’t feel heard or understood.

This year’s One Book, One Community selection, ‘Evicted,’ by Matthew Desmond, is a window into the topics of housing insecurity, poverty and exploitation. A reality seen across America today, this book gives us an opportunity to practice confronting the issue in a healthy way by sharing our thoughts and feelings, talking through conflicting viewpoints, connecting on shared experiences and learning how to find hope in any conversation – even the tough ones. Through various programs, activities and events, we hope to engage the community in impactful discussions with the goal of increasing our awareness and creating an openness to better connect with those around us.

It is those same divergent perspectives that are derived from passionate ideas, which, when recognized, provides an opportunity to hear other viewpoints, even if we don't agree with them. Beneath polarizing layers, the majority of us hold to the same core values in our lives: we want safety for ourselves and our families, security, stability, housing and our basic needs met. These are values we all share, yet sitting across from one another, it can be hard to find common ground. How can we approach having a conversation that nurtures growth on a community level with such a diverse group of people? We met with Mary Hancock, Executive Director of the Dispute Resolution Center of Kitsap County to get a fresh perspective: In the late 1990’s, Mary took a training that radically changed her approach to conflict. "I like to say that I fell in love with conflict during that training. I was totally intrigued. The idea that embracing conflict as an energy that would move one’s life forward was revolutionary. As I learned more, I came to understand that when it comes to conflict, we have a choice. Conflict does not have to be negative, it can also lead us in a positive direction if we remain curious and seek to understand another’s perspective. I have spent the past 20 years striving to look at conflict more like a powerful force that sparks my curiosity and provides an opportunity for change and growth. At the DRC, we model and teach the theory

and practical skills to build connection and maximize effective communication so that healthy, productive conversations can occur." In having brave conversations, we grow as people. We connect and learn from the stories we share. Through the eyes of others, we are able to see things in a different light. By allowing ourselves to be vulnerable with another person, we develop empathy, compassion and a deeper relationship with them. It becomes not about being right, but about connecting. We want to empower you to feel confident in the conversations that you have. We hope that you will take the One Book, One Community selection of ‘Evicted,’ by Matthew Desmond as an opportunity to practice creating open dialogue within your own life, family and extended community. There is vulnerability in opening up and we know it takes great courage to share with others. But hope keeps us looking forward, hope ignites our desire to connect and hope can begin with a conversation.

Braving the Conversation: Tips and Tricks You will never know what could grow from a conversation unless you’re brave enough to start one. In partnership with the Dispute Resolution Center of Kitsap County, we’ve provided some helpful skills to maneuver strategically throughout any conversation you want to start.

Pre-Conversation Goal: Determine what you are trying to accomplish in the conversation before entering it. Steer clear of distractions and side-topics that don’t align with your goal.

Lay the Foundation: Recognize that we rarely change another person’s mind in one conversation. Be willing to share your perspective without forcing it on the other person. Mindset: Approach the dialogue with curiosity. Balance speaking your mind with listening to others. Practice: Be mindful of your tone and communicate with patience and respect. Setting: People need to feel safe before being vulnerable. Find a safe space that works for both of you.

During Conversation ‘I’ Statements: It is easier for someone to acknowledge how “you feel” versus potentially making assumptions on how others feel. Balance: A conversation can only happen with two or more people. It is important to make sure both parties have space to speak and to be heard. Triggers: Notice when something makes you tense or fires you up. Breath through these emotions and ask yourself where these emotions stem from. Practice not reacting and instead ask more clarifying questions. Agree to Disagree: Approach conversations with curiosity, active listening and validation. Find Common Ground: Look for shared values to build trust and mutual understanding. Thanking: Gratitude goes a long way. Thank others for their willingness to being open with you.

Post-Conversation Allow Space: Give people time to process information, thoughts and feelings when they need it. It is okay to allow space before you reengage. Follow-up: Establishing trusting relationships can take time. Be proactive and brave in reaching out again. Be Proud: Vulnerability and sharing with others is no small feat. What ever the outcome, be proud that you are willing to engage in conversation with others.

Discussion Guide 1. If you were unexpectedly evicted from your home, what would the fallout be? How would this impact your education, employment and relationships? How might a sudden change like eviction affect your physical and mental well-being? 2. Although eviction is the central issue in 'Evicted,' affordable housing interacts intimately with many other social issues. For example: Do parents who have trouble finding/providing safe housing for their children deserve to have their children taken away and put in foster care? Would affordable housing make it easier for addicts and recovering addicts to enroll in programs that increase chances of rehabilitation? What other major issues can you think of that eviction affects, whether in this book or in general? 3. Many people have very codified perceptions of “people who get evicted” and suspect that those people are largely responsible—through bad decision making—for their circumstances. Did you feel this way before reading 'Evicted?' Why or why not? Did your opinions change after reading the book? If so, how?

foundation Since graduating from the University of Connecticut with a BA in Psychology and receiving an MA in Psychology through Chapman University, Driskell has spent years in the healthcare industry. She has used her strengths to support the fundraising efforts for both the Harrison Medical Center Foundation and the Mary Bridge Children’s Foundation. “I’ve had a really great run with the medical industry and I think it’s a great part of our community, but I’m looking forward to doing something a little bit different and to explore a new area.”

Kari Driskell, Assistant Director

A

t the beginning of November, there will be a new friendly face at the Kitsap Regional Library Foundation. We can't wait for you to meet Kari Driskell, the Foundation’s newly appointed Assistant Director. Driskell grew up in Seabeck and has been a fan of the Kitsap Regional Library system her whole life. “For me, being a Kitsap native, the Library has always been a mainstay. I grew up going to the Kitsap Library and I remember when the Bookmobile helped to connect the Seabeck community into the greater Kitsap.” Passionate about her community – and specifically, sports – Driskell coaches youth basketball and assists with the Central Kitsap High School basketball team where her daughter plays. “I’ve stayed involved with the high school activities over the years. I’m on the board with the CK Alumni Association, I graduated from CKHS and am really into supporting the school, the kids and education.”

Driskell is passionate about reading. “I’m an avid reader, all of my kids are. There’s something about the smell, the look, the feel. It’s one of those things that’s important in my life. What I’m most excited about is blending that passion of mine with something that’s so important to the community. I love Kitsap and I think I’ll have a lot of fun supporting such a great community resource.”

of impact, how people’s lives have been touched by the work at the Library.” Driven to connect with others, Driskell offers an open-door policy: “I hope people will share their stories with me and I’m looking forward to getting to know everybody, both within the Library and out in Kitsap.” Kitsap Regional Library Foundation inspires donors to support the Library beyond the means of public funding, raising funds from individuals, foundations, business and community organizations. Library programs like Summer Learning, STEM and One Book, One Community are essential to achieving the mission of the Library and are only possible through this additional support. Visit foundation.KRL.org for ways you can help us support your Library.

“Coming into this fundraising position and having a sales background – I’m a little competitive,” she laughs, “I want to raise as much money as I can for the Library and be able to help highlight what the Library does in the community. One of the most relevant things the Library is doing is building programs to help the public in ways that they don’t necessarily know. I’m still learning about that, but I aim to build up that momentum and share our story out with the community.” Smiling, Driskell explains, “I love laughing, building relationships and meeting with people to hear their stories. One of the things I enjoy most about this type of work are the stories

Early Learning Kits 22

Sep.Oct.Nov. 2019

Parents and caregivers-- support your role as your child’s first teacher and promote school readiness. Each kit is themed with books, educational toys and an activity guide. With 20 kits to choose from, you can pick up a new kit each week to make learning fun! Search for "Early Learning Kit" in the catalog to check one out. Ages 3-7

Early Learning Activities Write... Cards for loved ones, wish lists, new year goals, maybe even a valentine, there are plenty of opportunities to practice writing! Scribbling, drawing and coloring builds the eye-hand coordination and the fine motor skills needed for writing. Encourage your little one to draw what they want or make a card for a family member. Have them dictate to you and let them trace what you wrote in crayon to practice writing whole words and sentences. Play... When the weather turns and you’re stuck indoors, look around and see what items can be upcycled into fun DIY activities. Consider items in the recycling bin that can be combined to create sculptures. Adding colors to egg cartons can provide bases for sorting games. Create marble runs or gravity mazes using paper tubes taped to cardboard boxes. Worn out clothes can become costumes for dramatic play. And don’t forget how fun indoor fort building can be. Join in the fun!

Sing... The winter holidays provide many opportunities for family singalongs, but the ‘Winter Wonderland’ sing-along can continue with fun action songs that get kids moving while they sing. Try this one with scarves or tissue to tickle and encourage expressive dancing: "Snowflake, Snowflake", sang to the tune of, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” Snowflake, snowflake dance around Snowflake, snowflake touch the ground Snowflake landing on my nose Snowflake landing on my toes Snowflake, snowflake dance around Snowflake, snowflake touch the ground

Read... Winter is the perfect time to cozy up with your child and read with them! Show them words as you read and let them turn pages to build print awareness skills and fond memories of reading together. If you receive cards or letters, read them aloud with your little one to demonstrate how reading is important for communication and connecting with others. Both 'The Mitten' by Jan Brett and 'The Snowy Day' by Ezra Jack Keats can lead to fun activities by finding creative ways to recreate and retell the stories.

Talk... Tell stories about winter activities you enjoyed when you were young. Ask open-ended questions about your child's experiences and activities they enjoy. Ask them what they would like to do, encourage them to dream big and imagine possibilities. Make up silly and outlandish stories together and introduce new words; eventually they’ll start using them, too!
