C o m p e t i t i o n
The lake of Satamalahti has been a basic carrier of the quality and identity of the Mikkeli centre throughout its history. The recent process of modernization has separated, the city from the water potentials. In particular by means the introduction of vast infrastructures such as the harbour and industrial infill, the highway and treatment plant. These elements contributed to the functional and spatial development of Mikkeli, yet reversing, step by step the relation with the lake edge which shifted from being a “front side” to be a “back side”. This process occurred in many water cities around the world and in Finland. In a present time of changes in economical and social values this condition is a burden. Nevertheless the size and ambitions of Mikkeli allows for a vision which reinstates the lake as the hearth of its future development. The projects provides a robust spatial-flows framework for change which integrate an hydrological, ecological and spatial bias. The proposal has been conceived as a bridge between guiding principle and the real-world situation making use of the full potentials of the site.

The design of the future landmark of Mikkeli starts with a simple geometry SPIRAL. It gives the most natural and everchanging continuous space, it also brings interesting dialogue between negative and positive space.
Flexible arrangement Adaptive layout The interior space is flexible and adaptive to different functions. Partition panels are stored in the walls and floor panels are in the ceilings. C O N C E P T The design for the Integrated Teaching Buildings focused about a central, sculptural pedestrian circulation route comprised of stairs and escalators that links the new Cultural Plaza, elevation 10.4 with the Chung Chi Campus Plaza, elevation 37.4. The project consists of two podium structures flanking this stair and two towers, one (Building 1) bridging the beginning of the Grand Stair and one (Building 2) placed uphill and parallel to the circulation route. The Grand Stairway is visually inviting by lifting and lightening the structural elements that bridge across its connection to the Cultural Plaza. The visual connection from the lowest to highest points of the stair ensures this being an active and useful campus circulation route.

An iconic piece of architecture, prominently located at the Cultural Plaza, provides an entry structure to the development, the largest lecture halls (300 - 600p) at the entry level and the lecture halls (150p), an International Centre, Learning Commons, Computer Centre and classroom spaces placed on the floors above. T R E A T M E N T
The exterior expression is to combine solid and glazed treatments that express and enhance the interior function of the buildings. Locations within the structures that provide the best views, often at the building’s corners, are to be developed to the fullest. These spaces may be expressed through additional glazing opening the vistas to the interior while aiding the reduction of the visual mass of the buildings’ exteriors. Lining the Grand Stairway with transparently glazed interior circulation spaces creates visual links and activates both indoor and outdoor spaces. The project is to convey its purpose as a contribution to the academic community through the use of materials and colors selected. Natural materials such wood and stone and the use of color is encouraged for both interior and exterior of the project.

The design is to incorporate appropriate sustainable design strategies which enhance function and long-term use of the structures. Energy efficient MEP systems as well as passive approaches, such as daylighting, solar control and shading, green roofs, etc., are to be incorporated. Existing landscape will be enhanced by the extensive roof terraces, located on level 4, intended not only to make the new structures more sustainable, but also to weave the lush landscape from the adjacent hillside into the buildings and anchoring it intimately in its surroundings. The internal and external planning of the facility is being considered to include student breakout spaces to enhance both individual study and group gathering spaces throughout the project.

B U I L D I N G The exterior expression is to combine solid and glazed Inspired by aspiration for the future of Haixia Economic Zone, our design proposal embodies the balanced and stable appearance suitable for this important bank institution. Two symmetrical sides of the tower in equal proportion are united by the central atrium and architectural design of the building. Our initial concept originates from careful observation of Fujian region and the Haixi Economic zone. As with aspiration for design of the Bank’s logo, we take essence from geographical composition of Taiwan straits with two sides, which are united to create new economic zone of national importance. Looking at Fuzhou city from sky, we discovered that Fuzhou city it-self are also separated and united by the city’s important river, Min-River. Looking closer, the current masterplan design of the Haixi Financial Street area also has two sides, D2, D4 and D6 to the east, D1, D3, and our site D5 to the west which are again united by the central Landscape feature element.
P O D I U M Our podium design is inspired by the energy and life of China’s civilization. Our initial concept originates from observation into the mapping of energy generated by modern development of China’s southern coast-line from Beijing to Shanghai, and to the Haixi Economic Zone. We envisaged the life-form and energy concentrate towards the coastline from country level, to regional Haixi Economic zone, then closer along the banks of Min River and the future of Fuzhou Haixi Financial Street Zone. We began to see the podium as part of heave of activity and energy generated by the future occupants of this area. Rational 1m x 1m grid was applied to the entire surface of the podium. By randomly alternating between solid and open or glazed panel, and allowing the openings to be concentrated towards the Min River, it resulted in beautiful motif of pattern. We were also inspired by the Fuzhou culture for the choice of materials; variations created in the design of the podium façade and the materials are reminiscent of variation of colours displayed in the Shoushan stones.

C O N C E P T
The concept for the landscape design was inspired by Chinese character Zhou (Chinese: 州; pinyin: zhōu). This character was taken from Fuzhou (Chinese: 福州; pinyin: Fúzhōu) and has its root in sandbanks of a river. The graphical elements of the character were broken down into the constituting elements, the river and the sandbanks. The vertical lines of river part are used as axial or planar space throughout the site and the sandbanks are used as landscape elements to develop landscape design ideas, such as water feature or landscape furniture.

Located along the prominent banks of the Min River and the terminus of the already planned future central public park of the block, the proposed site will be an anchor point of the public space in the area. Together with the large scale financial buildings within the block, the site will have a strong civic character with significant public frontage towards the waterfront.

I N S P I R A T I O N The design for the new office building for Pinghua is inspired by the spectacular world-famous natural topography of Chongqing and the city’s unique relationship with the mighty Yangtze River.

The building consists of an iconic pair of towers. Its dramatic exterior shape with its narrow gap is reminiscent of the steep geological formations found along the Yangtze River gorge. The very transparent glazed cladding of the gap can be seen as a waterfall cascading towards the river.
The atrium space between the towers create office spaces as well as inspiring social gathering spaces for office staff. The very light cladding of the atrium is highly intelligent providing optimum daylight and natural ventilation to all office space. The atrium acts as the ecological heart and lungs of the building. At street level a small high-end retail mall acts as an important urban connection to the river front park. The building thus fully engages with its surroundings and forms an integral part of the urban masterplan for the new CBD.
While the flow of water symbolizes prosperity and fortune, the rock-like shape of the towers firmly roots the building in its local environment. The building will provide top grade-A office space. While the façade cladding of the towers is inspired by layering of natural rock sedimentation, it is highly intelligent as it optimizes daylight provision to the interior and blocks out unwanted solar heat gains.

F A Ç A D E A N A L Y S I S The conceptual idea of the façades is supported by a thorough environmental analysis. Solar heat gain studies have been conducted for all façades. As some of the façades are directly exposed to the eastern and western low-angle sun, the most effective way to reduce solar heat gain is to reduce the amount of window glazing. At the same time overhanging façade elements provide shading against the high-angle southern sun.

The concept of the examination building is to create a cheerful , encouraging and comfortable environment for Chalmers students.Featured with an eye-catching “A shaped” atrium, large volume of the building is open, public and bright, almost half of the ground floor space of the building is opened up for students to relax and gather before and after examination. The Use of cheerful colours (eg. translucent pink leaning wall, colourful walls for seminar rooms) and dynamic shapes (eg. curving walls for rooms, circular openings on walls) is to create a relaxing environment to release anxiety of students. Exhibition space is provided at the ground floor, together with a prominent stair ,which serves as gathering space, leading people up to the cafe and entrance hall. Seminar rooms, auditorium and office are located on upper floors, accessed by elevator or stair, on each floor, common space ,which is connected to the atrium, is provided for relaxing after exam or seminar.

Østengen & Bergo er engasjert som landskapsarkitekt for det nye Nasjonalmuseet på Vestbanen. Det arkitektfaglige idégrunnlaget for landskapsutformingen er hovedsakelig basert på de arkitektoniske ideer i Kleihaus & Schuwerk’s vinnerutkast for Nasjonalmuseet. Dette består først og fremst i anlegging av en intim og skjermet plass, Museumsplassen, foran museets hovedinngang, omgitt av museets storlinjede vegger på to sider, og Vestbane- og sidebygningens mindre og mer detaljerte fasader på nordøstre side. Plassen vil få mange sittemuligheter integrert i museets fasader, og mot Vestbanebygningens fasader. Museumplassen skal fremstå som en urban plass rundt et stort tuntre, med et enkelt, fleksibelt gulv som kan romme folkeliv, faste eller midlertidige kunstverk, kaféstoler og køer. I den solrike skrenten opp til Dronning Mauds gate anlegges sittetrapper , som møtested eller hvile for slitne besøkende. Trappen gir også mulighet for trinnfri og universell atkomst fra Dronning Mauds gate ved en diagonal gangvei som leder mot museets hovedinnganger. På byggets steinfasader, langs Dronning Mauds gate, nordvestfasaden og mot Dokkveien plantes villvin, i tråd med byens tradisjon på sentrale stein- og murbygg. Som del av viktige byomgivelser har forprosjektet også omfattet landskapsbearbeiding og tilplanting av omkringliggende gater og plasser, selv om dette strekker seg utenfor tomten.

The concept is building of a new landscape in the site with respect to the city origin. It is a creative process involving local development to integrate the local culture and urban development. The name of the town- Sand-nes implies sand and clay accumulated at the mouth of rivers. This contributed to the industrial base for the town in form of brick and ceramic production. The idea of the project is to recreate the geographical sedimentation process in the site. We simulate the water flow process from the city, through the entrances and deposits sediment and masses as delta landscape. This landscaping creates good circulation over the plaza, dunes and ridges with provide shelter, viewpoints and activity spaces. Instead of fixed designated space, it is an ever changing process and welcome the co-creating with local development. Introduction 簡介 The Water Ladder The Water Ladder adopts a holistic and ultimately flexible solution for the rehabilitation of land which for years served as the location for Taichung’s Shuinan airport. The Taichung Gateway Project calls for a park to form the heart of the development, linking different zones including an Innovation R & D District, a Cultural Business District, Gateway District and an Eco Residential District.
Acknowledging the location’s historical eponymous link with water, the Water Ladder comprises a unique strategy that unifies the site along a north-south axis using a newly created waterway and from east to west by creating a series horizontal plots providing a framework for multiple-uses that at also allows sufficient scope for future redevelopment of the land as required.

Far more than a decorative or purely recreational strategy, the Water Ladder establishes a new paradigm for contemporary living based around three key components: a Water System, a Ladder System and an Activity Network, bringing into existence the interstices between nature, the urban and the agricultural. This water purification system is displayed as a landscape feature throughout the park where visitors can learn the water recycling process.

The system is intentionally exposed so that the visitor can see the workings of the park as well as serving other functions such as being waterway for the transportation boats.

6. Water Tower: 水塔 Water Towers and water pumps are located along the length of the waterway to regulate the water system. It is powered by solar panels placed over the canopy. The canopy moves to follow the sun’s movement during the course of the day and fold its leaves to protect itself from strong winds. In essence it is a kinetic sculpture to articulate the park as well as being functional element of the water system.

Following the axis of the waterway, the Ladder System facilitates the rehabilitation of the land from its previous industrial use as an airfield to a more natural equilibrium. Borrowing from existing agricultural principles and forming an extension to the existing agricultural zones to the north of the site, the Ladder System divides the land that borders the Water System into “plots” that are open to a variety of uses by the public. Amongst the principle uses envisaged for these plots is the creation of agricultural parkland in which local residents, schools and tenants from the Innovation and Cultural business districts may grow their own crops and flowers as well as other more leisure related activities. By giving people direct access to the land and responsibility for its cultivation, the Ladder System is the key element in the creation of this new community based on the symbiosis between man and nature.

Description: Diploma project for master of landscape architecture in AHO - Critical rethink on competition requirements given by the municipality. Tasks include comprehensive urban study, waterfront recreation development, remediation for pollutants and environmental strategies.
[Problem] The Finnish city of Mikkeli is calling for a design proposal for city expansion. The planned area for development is ambitious in size, considering current demographic trends. According to the population forecast in 2003, Mikkeli was expected to shrink steadily. Until 2012, the city has managed to maintain its population. Does it, however, mean that the planned city expansion is realistic? [Role of Design] Mikkeli is struggling with challenges of an aging population, losing young and educated inhabitants; with contaminated soils from its industrial past and with the need for infrastructure transformation. In the battle against the fate of shrinking, it is crucial to tackle the fundamental problems and design for steady growth. This diploma proposes a spatial concept for increasing the attractiveness of Mikkeli as a carrier of sensible growth.

C O N C E P T to create a pleasant healing environments together with social activities for patients to improve the healing progress. The new heart clinic is divided into two main parts – the Out Patient Department and Night Patient Department. The two parts are connected by the central circulation hallway, a space with a ceiling height of 30m and the incorporation of the exisiting natural landscape in the area, the glass wall on both sides allows sufficient sunlight penetration into the area. Inside this circulation hallway, there are shops scattered along the whole space, an art gallery and a small library for the patients and visitor.

Realisation A key problem of the ground floor is, that we have little groundspace. This is due to the adjacient build environment, the particular shape of our building and aswell the idea of not disturbing the nature/the rock to much.
The stairs leading to onto the first level are representative, can be used for sitting and are in dialoque with the rock.

Senior housing is not only physical shelter for elderly, but most importantly a HOME for them to live physically and mentally healthily. Organic is a style and an attitude of living. It is to live lively, healthily and in a sustainable way. In the senior housing project, living organic is the main idea based on to develop the design. Living organic is archieved by inserting diversity and energy to the housing area for living lively; creating chances to do exercises and meeting points for living healthily both physically and mentally; and introducing some management strategies for living sustainably. It could not only be applied to senior housing but also everyday life.
