Here's a broad question for you - why do men lie? You've heard the jokes and have probably made a few yourself, but what actually causes them to so often lie to you about where they've been, who they've been with, and what they've been doing? It's a conundrum that millions of women deal with every day and one that men laugh off as often as not. Believe it or not, though, there are reasons why men lie, and if you have a good understanding of their reasons, you can better confront them. Reputation and Confrontation To start with, men have a constant desire to maintain a certain reputation, not just with their friends and co-workers, but with you and with random strangers they've never met. It's a status issue. A man whose status falls in society is one who is weak and open to outside threats. So, instead of admitting weakness by telling the truth, they lie to cover up their weaknesses and shortcomings. Another answer to "why do men lie" is that they generally want to avoid confrontation. This will come up constantly in your relationship and can lead to huge misunderstandings. A man might decide to go out for a beer after work and instead of telling you about it, he says he stayed late to finish a report. All he was thinking about was the potential argument that might have arisen because he was late for dinner. But, if you find out he lied about staying late at work, your first thought won't be that he was out drinking - you'll think he was cheating on you, and the issue gets much worse than it needed to be. It's not an excuse by any means - in fact, this is probably the dumbest reason to lie, but it's also one of the most common and therefore leads to the most conflict. Hiding the Truth Of course, while some men lie to cover up small issues or to avoid having to come to terms with the decisions they make, others blatantly work to cover up the
truth. Why do men lie? Because they don't want to get caught. In these situations, the man very well could be cheating and he doesn't want to get caught because not only would that end his second relationship, it would probably end his relationship with you and the consequences could be catastrophic including divorce, loss of his children, and loss of income. So, he lies instead. Other men may graduate to the level of chronic lying choosing to tell you a lie rather than the truth for absolutely no reason. They've lied so often, about so many things that they do it by habit. They embellish stories, add money to their income, flatter you endlessly, and make up tales about where they were or what they were doing for no good reason. How to Stop the Lying If your husband or boyfriend lies constantly, the easiest way to handle it is to confront him. Ask him why he lied to you and lay out your issues with the lie. Don't automatically assume he is cheating on you unless there is additional proof, but make it clear that your trust in him has been damaged because of the lie. The mere threat of repercussions can often be enough to put things into focus for a frequent liar.
