Cal-Nev-Ha KIWIN’S Live 2 Learn Day January 30, 2016 Manual
CNH KIWIN’S District Board, At Your Service
Presents
Live 2 Learn Day January 30th, 2015 What is Live 2 Learn Day? Live 2 Learn Day is a specially dedicated day where the entire CNH KIWIN’S District is encouraged to work with their own local community in a Live 2 Learn service event. This unique day’s purpose is to also bring awareness to our District Major Emphasis, Live 2 Learn. It’s not focused on raising money for donations like our other projects but instead, it is centered on hands-on service with local communities for the cause of promoting education and literacy.
For any questions or concerns, please contact any District Board Member, Lieutenant Governor, or Carolyn Le—District Kiwanis Family and Foundation Chair At kiwins.dkfamilychair@gmail.com
SERVICE PROJECT SUGGESTIONS
Movie Night Work with a local library or school in hosting a short-length movie
night. Children would come and watch the movie. After the movie, they would write either an essay, poem, or illustrate the movie using different supplies. They could also answer a small questionnaire on the movie thus showing
their comprehension level of the movie. Although it is a quite fun event with the movie,
make sure to have a focus with literature after the movie as it is the reason for the event pertaining to Live 2 Learn. Members would help by planning the event and possibly having small food booths in the area.
Hospital Reading Unfortunately, there are many children in hospitals due to various reasons. For this service event, KI-
WIN’S members would come to a particular hospital and read to the children that are at the hospital recovering from their injuries or illness. Members could also prepare novels, coloring books, or other gifts to present to the children as well. Another service event could take place for creating those gifts as well. This
event will depend on the strictness of each hospital’s rules for volunteers. Always double check with the hospital’s policies pertaining to volunteers before planning for this event.
Book Club In an afterschool event at a local elementary or middle school, KIWIN’S members could lead a book club style discussion. The school’s literature teacher or teachers could also help to lead the discussion. It could be about the particular book that the students are reading at that particular mo-
ment. It could also be on a particular book that the students voted to read for them-
selves. Reward students who attend with school supplies, books, locker decorations, or backpacks. Those could be either fundraised or donated. KIWIN’S members would assist by simply participating and attending the discussions.
Mystery Check-Out As a program with the local elementary or middle school’s library, students would be able to read books with an air of mystery. Wrap selected books with decorated paper so that the book is completely covered. Although the children to check out the book and return like they would normally at a library. It adds a new twist to the
mystery section of a library. The mystery selections would hopefully encourage students to
venture and attempt new genres, authors, or series. KIWIN’S members would help by wrapping the books with decorated paper or by holding fundraisers to receive even more books for this program.
Tutor Program Work with a local elementary or middle school to establish an after school where KIWIN’S members are able to assist the children in their school work. KIWIN’S members could undergo a mentorship system
where they would pair up individually with a child and spend a set amount
of time helping that same child with school work. It could also expand with the KIWIN’S members using materials to re-teach confusing topics to the same child. This is a really great service project that could be re-
peated several times throughout the entire school year and could potentially become a weekly, biweekly, or monthly service event.
Comprehension Game The comprehension game starts off where a KIWIN’S member or more will read a story to a group of children. After hearing the story, the children will be set off on a scavenger hunt in which they must answer a question pertaining to the story to move onto the next station of the scavenger hunt. The winners of the scavenger hunt will receive prizes such as school
supplies, books, locker decorations, or backpacks. Members would assist in the planning of the event as well as the actual event in which they would be reading the story or reading out the question in their station during the scavenger hunt. To receive the necessary materials, KIWIN’S clubs could either fundraiser or ask local stores to donate towards the service event.
Literacy Festival Work with a local library or school to hold a literacy festival. The festival would consist of many different booths that would promote reading and critical thinking skills. Small trivia games pertaining to education,
cards that test memory, painting stations, and creating books could be ideas for the booths. At
the end of the day, children would be able to bring home the games if possible and their books/paintings/creations. Members would be able to participate in the planning and execution of the actual service event. To receive the
necessary materials, KIWIN’S clubs could team up with that local library or school as well as the community in
gathering all of the items.
Trivia Competition Communicate with a local library or school to create a trivia competition day. In the trivia competition, chil-
dren would essentially compete against each other either in groups or individually where they would answer questions pertaining to literacy and education. Winners of the trivia competition would receive prizes such as school supplies,
books, locker decorations, or backpacks. Members would assist in the organization of the event
and they could also act as the host or assistant on the day of the actual event as well. KIWIN’S clubs could ask local stores to donate the prizes for the trivia competition.
Open Floor Reading Communicate with a local library to hold an open floor reading night where children and their parents would be able to attend. The open floor reading night would start off with a KIWIN’S mem-
ber reading a story and then allowing the children to take turns reading a page or
another book. At the end of the event, children if possible could bring home one of their favorite books from the open floor reading night. The books could be donated from the community or the library. KIWIN’S members
would supervise the event and also assist in the planning of the event beforehand.
Fundraisers and Drives The fundraisers could range from selling hot chocolate, holding a bake sale, or teaming up with a local restaurant for a dine out. Note that we don’t actually donate to Live 2 Learn but rather clubs can use that money to buy school supplies, crafts materials, etc. Clubs could also hold a book, arts, or school supplies drive and donate them to a local school or library. The fundraisers and drives could be a prerequisite in gaining the necessary supplies for a Live 2 Learn service project. Although Live 2 Learn Day is designed for a hands on service project with the local community, sometimes issues arise with the planning last minute. If problems do arise or clubs would like to do an additional event for Live 2 Learn, fundraisers and drives are always beneficial service events.
