ach year, KIWI features a curated gift guide to help you shop for your loved ones during the holiday season with gifts that are better for you and the planet. As we continue this tradition, I’d like to reflect on how we carry out these customs. With universal supply-chain issues this year, the existential fear of missing out on purchases has pushed the holiday buying season earlier than ever. But should we still be focusing on the “stuff” associated with the holiday season in the face of our current climate and plastic pollution crisis? Perhaps this year we can collectively commit to making more mindful purchases and acquiring less when no more is needed. “The Meaningful Holiday Gift Guide” is here to help you make the gifts you do buy, count (p. 25). Made with mental health, sustainability, and family togetherness in mind, quality over quantity will do more good for your family and the environment. And no matter what holiday you celebrate, you can “Deck the Halls Without Hidden Toxins” (p. 12) and gather around the table with our “Soups and Sides to Celebrate” (p. 18). From all of us at KIWI, we wish you a happy holiday season and a healthy start to your new year.

Smarter Holiday Gift Giving: Open-Ended Toys If you want your child’s toys to grow with them, opt for ones that inspire creativity instead of those with all the bells and whistles. Think building blocks and puppet shows, not battery-operated toys, to allow them to refine their motor and cognitive skills. For parents looking for a less cluttered playroom, these toys can inspire hours of fun for years to come.
Wrapping Paper You Can Recycle If the aftermath of holiday gift giving includes trash bags full of wrapping paper at your house, there’s an eco-friendly solution. Many store-bought wrapping paper options contain non-paper additives, foil, or laminate, disqualifying them from being recycled. Wrappily prints directly on 100% recyclable and compostable newsprint and ditches the unnecessary cardboard tube for packaging made from plants. Milled and printed in the Pacific Northwest for a lower carbon footprint, Wrappily is a brand built with sustainability in mind. Bonus: Their designer-created prints will brighten your merrymaking, no matter what holiday you celebrate. (Starting at $10 for a double-sided print package, wrappily.com) kiwimagonline.com

From handmade decorations to the safest plants, discover how to fill your home with holiday cheer—the natural way. The first glimmer of holiday magic is often felt once the music starts playing and the decorations go up: stockings hung by the fireside, a brightly lit tree, the smell of pine cones and gingerbread, you name it. Before you open your box labeled “holiday decor” or go to the store to buy more ornaments, consider how safe your go-to decorations are for your family’s health (adults, children, and pets). Unfortunately, many conventional holiday decorations contain toxins like lead, phthalates, or pesticides that can act as endocrine disruptors with varying health risks, especially for young kids. Here are our best tips for how to decorate for the holidays in the healthiest way.

Tree
A Christmas tree is the centerpiece of holiday décor for many families. While you might consider an artificial tree to be better for the environment because you can reuse it year after year, it’s important to note the toxins that are lurking in its branches. Artificial trees are usually made of a type of plastic called polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which contains chemical additives such as lead and phthalates. Phthalates have been shown to damage the male reproductive system and no level of lead exposure has been proven safe. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), “Lead harms almost every organ system in the body and has been linked to a staggering array of health effects, including permanent brain damage, lowered IQ, hearing loss, miscarriage, premature birth, increased blood pressure, kidney damage and nervous system problems.” You can learn more about these and other common endocrine disruptors, here. On the flip side, some families worry about the environmental impact of cutting down real trees. However, real Christmas trees are grown on farms specifically for the holidays. These trees often take a decade to grow, but a farmer will plant a new tree in place of each one that’s cut. When shopping for a real tree, beware of pesticides and try to find an organically grown tree. Natural Alternative: A living potted tree. Bring it in for the holidays and then outside to grow until next year. It’s best to bring the potted tree inside only for up to 12 days, and once back outside, make sure it’s in a sheltered location.
13 kiwi Winter 2021 | 2022
Find an Organically Grown Tree Near You Green Promise offers a list of organic Christmas tree farms around the country including low-spray and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Christmas trees. You can view the list here. Local Harvest also allows you to search their directory of 40,000+ farms and sellers for local produce, including Christmas trees. Be sure to note whether the offerings are organic or just local. Check your area here.
Holiday Decorations
Stringed lights are mesmerizing, but so many brands on the market contain lead. Instead, search for lead-free lights to hang on the tree or adorn the mantle. Shopping tip: Look for the RoHS Compliant label that restricts the use of six hazardous materials, including lead. Quntis is a certified RoHS Compliant brand available at Walmart.
Tree ornaments are often made of plastic, metal, or materials that contain lead and other harmful substances. Skip the tinsel and plastic ornaments and go all-natural with your holiday décor this year by incorporating items foraged from nature. You can even make it a fun outing to gather sticks, greenery, pinecones, and more to make a beautiful wreath or small decorations for each area of your home. Natural Alternative: Ornaments: Dried sliced oranges, cinnamon stick stars, scented pinecones, popcorn garland, and salt dough ornaments with
cookie cutters. Consider making stockings out of old knit sweaters. For Hanukkah, craft these Plantable Seed Paper Dreidels from KIWI.
Festive Plants and Fragrances
From holly and ivy to mistletoe and poinsettias, traditional holiday plants are cherished as festive decorations throughout the home. Some, however, can be mildly toxic or even cause severe symptoms in your pets or pose a choking hazard for young kids if ingested. (Note, the European mistletoe causes more concern than its American counterpart.)
Natural Alternative: Try Autumn Olive instead of holly; red roses instead of poinsettias. In place of mistletoe, consider making a “kissing ball” by combining short sprigs of boxwood or other greenery hung by some ribbon or twine.
Holiday scents are a must to get your family in the spirit but be mindful of what your candle is doing to the indoor air quality. Some scented candles contain phthalates or carcinogenic components such as formaldehyde or acetaldehyde as part of the fragrance. The wax of most conventional candles is made of paraffin, which is derived from petroleum. Paraffin is not a sustainable resource and has also come under the microscope for releasing carcinogenic soot when burned, according to Green America. Some experts have refuted that paraffin wax candles pose a risk, but more data is needed. Natural Alternative: Choose soy wax (a veganfriendly option) or beeswax candles for your menorah. Make your own potpourri by combining citrus, warm spices, cranberries, and cinnamon. Or go simple by decorating with fresh pine sprigs or boiling, then simmering cinnamon sticks in water to help your home smell like the holidays.

Whether your family dines on braised brisket and potato latkes, roasted turkey and root vegetables, or anything in between, holiday meals offer some of the best passed-down family traditions. To reduce your family’s exposure to pesticides in your food, commit to using as many organic ingredients as possible. You can start by swapping out conventional produce with organic varieties. You can even go meatless to cut your carbon footprint. Shopping tip: Consult the EWG’s 2021 “Dirty Dozen” and “Clean Fifteen” lists to learn which produce has the highest concentration of pesticides and which has the lowest. These lists may then help you prioritize your organic purchases at the grocery store.
For more holiday-inspired recipes, check out KIWI’s online Holiday Recipes. Bonus Non-toxic Holiday Ideas Toxins and the environment go hand in hand, so here are even more ways to use less and recycle to offset pollution and its harm to human health. Instead of: Plastic food storage containers that may contain BPA or other similar endocrine-disrupting chemicals that can leach into your food Try this: Use BPA-free glass containers to store leftovers Instead of: Store-bought wrapping paper Try this: Reusable fabric tied with twine or scarves or recycled wrapping paper, like Wrappily (p. 8). You can even make your own!
Instead of: Plastic toy stocking stuffers Try this: Wooden toys, beeswax crayons, organic socks or scrunchies, homemade playdough (try KIWI’s recipe). Don’t miss KIWI’s Meaningful Holiday Gift Guide for our picks this year. (p. 25) Instead of: Greeting cards Try this: Send e-cards or look for cards made of 100% post-consumer recycled materials, like Paper Culture.

Add unsalted butter, cinnamon, salt, and pure maple syrup to the potato mixture. Using a hand mixer, mix until everything is combined well. Stir in the pecan and walnuts. 5. Place the potato mixture back into the shells, filling to the top. 6. Bake for about 15 minutes or until hot throughout. 7. Top with more chopped nuts and drizzled maple syrup if desired.

RECYCLED GINGERBREAD HOUSES
Sugar and spice and everything nice! These upcycled gingerbread houses made out of recycled cartons are a blast to create with your little ones. You can make your village as big and detailed or as minimal as you want. All you need are a few basic materials and some imagination.
materials • Recycled milk or juice cartons in various sizes • Recycled cereal boxes (optional) • Non-toxic brown acrylic paint • Non-toxic white acrylic paint • Paint brushes (thick and thin) • Water
instructions 1. First, make sure all of your cartons being used are washed well and dry. 2. Next, set up your station to start painting. Lay your newspaper down to be sure not to get paint on your beloved tables. Start by painting your cartons white for a base coat and let that dry. 3. Using your brown paint, start painting your houses. You’re going to need 2–3 coats, so make sure you let each coat dry in between painting or you’ll get streaking. 4. Once all of your coats are dry and you can no longer see any logos on your cartons you are ready to add some details. Outline your carton house with white paint and a thin paint brush. Add windows, doors, decorative art, icing icicles, hearts, shapes, candy canes, and so on. 5. Take some recycled cereal boxes and cut out some gingerbread boys and girls to add them to the town.

CLOTHESPIN SNOWFLAKES
Nothing says Christmastime like snow! Create your very own winter wonderland by making these clothespin snowflakes.
materials • Clothespins (6 pins make 1 snowflake) • Wood glue • Non-toxic white acrylic paint
instructions 1. Decide how many snowflakes you want to make in total. This will determine how many clothespins you will need. 2. Once you have your clothespins, have a parent disassemble them by pulling out the wire piece. You should now have two pieces from one pin. 3. Glue your clothespins back together using the flat sides. Let all your pieces dry before moving forward. 4. After all of your clothespins are dry and the glue is set, arrange your clothespins into your snowflake shapes. There should be six pins per snowflake. Simply glue each clothespin arm together at the base of the pin creating a star like formation in the center of your snowflake. Pins should be pointed side out from the center.
• Paint brushes
5. Let your snowflakes dry again.
• Water
6. Paint them white or leave natural.
• Cloth • Fishing line (optional)

Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made you out of paper! Here’s another fun way to get the family together this Hanukkah. Play with your plantable dreidels, fill them with gelt, or gift them to friends and family. Best of all—they give back to our Earth all year long. Simply plant them in the ground and wait for them to sprout. You can create your own flower garden from something homemade.
materials • Seed paper (find it on Amazon); regular paper works as well if you don’t wish to plant • Printer (or you can trace it off of your computer) • Scissors • Glue • Pencils (for dreidel stems)
instructions 1. Print or trace your dreidel pattern here. 2. Cut out your flat dreidel image, poke a hole where the black dot is, and fold where the dotted lines are shown. 3. Simply fold in glue tabs and add dabs of glue. Glue your tabs to their neighboring sides and create your 3D dreidel shape.

4. Let your dreidels dry once all sides are glued. Then, lightly poke a hole through the top’s center. 5. Lightly slide a pencil point down into that hole. This will be your dreidel handle to help it spin. 6. Take it a step further and add some color or designs to your crafty dreidel. Have fun playing with the game that gives back! ORANGES WHY WE LOVE THEM: From mandarins and clementines to naval oranges, these bright citrus fruits are popular for their sweet taste and numerous health benefits. Oranges are a good source of fiber, thiamine, folate, vitamin A, B vitamins, and vitamin C—the immune-supporting antioxidant that helps protect cells from damage. In fact, a medium orange contains about 90% of your daily recommended intake of vitamin C. Oranges also help prevent skin damage, lower cholesterol, control blood sugar levels, and support good eye health.
HOW TO CHOOSE THEM: The peak season for oranges is November through May. When shopping for oranges, look for those with smooth skin that are firm and heavy (indicating a higher juice content). Keep in mind, skin color is not typically a sign of taste or ripeness: oranges with a greener coloration can be just as flavorful as bright hues.
HOW TO STORE THEM: Oranges can be kept at room temperature for up to one week, or stored in the refrigerator for three to four weeks. The cooler temperature of the refrigerator prevents them from drying out. Oranges will become soft as they start to spoil then develop mold; be sure to discard oranges as soon as they start to become soft or mold appears.
DELICIOUS WAYS TO USE THEM: Eating fresh oranges preserves the most nutrients, but other great ways to consume them is adding to salads or smoothies; making marmalades, marinades, or syrups; or juicing them to drink or add to baked recipes. Incorporate orange zest into any recipe (think: dressings, sauces, or condiments) where you want to pump up the orange flavor without adding juice.
