Industry Updates World Pump Market to Grow by 19 Percent Through 2015

Rajkot can be a pump making hub in india : Industry

he world market for industrial pumps will grow by just 19 percent through 2015 when it will reach $40 billion. However there will be geographical and industry segments which will grow at a more robust rate than the average.

T

With over 350 units of pump manufacturing units already present in Rajkot, industry experts believe it can be hub of the pump industry in India. Showcasing its capability to act as a hub, the pump industry in Rajkot has been growing at the rate of over 100 per cent.

This forecast is included in the most recent adjustments of revenues in the McIlvaine online market report, Pumps World Market.

Moreover, out of 350 units, 30-40 units are large while rests of the units are work as small and medium scale units. The Rajkot pump industry has had a turnover of Rs 800-1,000 crore and the city is third largest pump manufacture city in India after Coimbatore and Ahmedabad. The Rajkot-based 350 pump manufacturing units provide direct employment to the more than 10,000 people and indirect employment to over one lakh people.

The geographical segments with the highest growth include several Asian countries. India is building new coal-fired power plants and is starting to address the need for clean water. The growth of pump sales in China will be 10 percent annually over the next five years. Unconventional oil and gas is a fast growth application segment. The Marcellus shale region in the U.S. will require considerable investments in pumps to fracture shale and handle the flow back wastewater. The international pump companies are taking advantage of the market growth in Asia, but in general, they are losing market share as Chinese manufacturers are making inroads. Nevertheless the world market is served with a few very large international suppliers. McIlvaine has ranked the pump companies by sales revenues as follows: Ranking 1

3

KSB

4

Sulzer

5

Grundfos

6

Slots 11-20 include seven U.S. companies and three European firms. One Indian company is in the next tier (Kirloskar is #23). Chinese companies have moved up and some are in the fourth tier. McIlvaine has ranked 451 companies. There are more than 10,000 companies manufacturing pumps, but most have sales revenues below $1 million.

Types of Pumps Impellers can also be classified by the shape and form of their vanes

W

e Were talking about component of centrifugal pumps and finished with casing & Impellers. Here we discuss different types of vane shape & form of Impeller.

Impeller vane shape and form Impellers can also be classified by the shape and form of their vanes as follows: The straight-vane impeller (redial) The mixed-flow impeller The axial-flow impeller or propeller Francis vane Backward curved vane Straight-vane impeller In a straight-vane impeller, the vane surfaces are generated by a straight line parallel to the axis of rotation. These vanes are also called single curvature vanes. Mixed-flow impeller An impeller design that has both radial and axial flow components is a mixed-flow impeller. It is generally restricted to single-suctions with a specific speed above 4,200. Types with lower specific speeds are called francis vane impeller. Axial-flow impeller Mixed-flow impellers with a very small redial flow component are usually referred to as propellers. In a true propeller or axial-flow impeller, the flow strictly parallels the axis of rotation.

Where: Ns = specific speed N = rotative speed,(rpm) Q = flow at optimum efficiency, (gpm us) H = total head (ft/stage) Figure 1 shows the relationship of specific speed to singlesuction impeller profiles. Vane shape Classification of impeller according to their vane shape is arbitrary as there is a great deal of overlapping in the types of impellers used in different types of pumps. For example: Impellers in single and double-suction pumps of low specific speed have vanes extending across the suction eye. This provides a mixed flow at the impeller entrance for low pickup losses at high rotative speeds, but allows the discharge portion of the impeller to use the straight-vane principle. In pumps of higher specific speed operating against low heads, impellers have double-curvature vanes extending over the full vane surface. Many impellers are designed for specific applications.

Specific speed Calculating specific speed is one method of classifying the pump impeller with reference to their geometric similarity. Specific speed is a correlation pump capacity, head, and rotative speed and can be described by the following formula:

Figure 1. Impeller Profile vs. Specific Speed

Figure 2. Flat-Type Wearing Ring

For example: the conventional impeller design with sharp vane edges and restricted areas is not suitable for handling liquids that contain rags, stringy material, and solid such as sewage because it will become clogged. Special nonclogging impellers with blunt edges and large waterways have been designed for such service. The impeller design used for paper pulp or sewage pumps is fully open, non-clogging and has screw and redial streamlined vanes. The vane's leading edge projects far into the suction nozzle permitting the pump to handle pulp stocks with a high consistency of paper. August - 2011

Figure 3. "L" Type Wearing Ring

Wearing Rings Wearing rings (for casing or impeller) provide an easily and economically renewable leakage joint. There are various types of wearing ring designs, and the selection of the most desirable type depends on the following: Liquid being handled Pressure differential across the leakage joint Rubbing speed Pump design (i.e., sewage vs. clean liquid)

chambers (figure - 4). In leakage joints involving a flat-type wearing ring, the leakage flow is a function of the following: Area Length of the joint Pressure differential across the joint

The most common ring constructions are the flat type (figure -2) and the “L type (figure -3).

If the path is broken by relief chambers, the velocity energy in the leakage jet is dissipated in each relief chamber, thereby increasing the resistance. As a result, with several relief chambers and several leakage joints for the same actual flow through the joint, is less resulting in higher pump performance and operating efficiency.

Some designers favor labyrinth-type rings, which have two or more annular leakage joints connected by relief

South India - A Hottest Destination for Farm Mechanization “AGRITECH INDIA 2011 Gateway to Focus on Technology Transfer to Small Farmers

T

he present agriculture scenario in India would reveal that although the Green Revolution has brought about a transformation on the farm front, the situation calls for many mid-course corrections to enhance the output through such measures as area expansion, productivity increase and restoration of soil health to augment employment opportunities and income. Transfer of technology is a 'must' to make the benefits of the Revolution more meaningful to the stakeholders, who include the farmers, industry & trade and, of course, the government. In recent years, much emphasis has been given by the Ministry of Agriculture on commercializing agricultural production in the country. Adequate production and distribution of food has become a high priority and global concern. In the fast changing world and increasing competition in a globalised economy, there is a need of exploiting the available resources at maximum level and use of best technologies available world over, to cope with domestic demand of food and also to target export market. The Ministry is aiming to double the production of all food crops through National Food Security Mission, National Horticulture Mission, National Horticulture Board and disseminating latest and modern practices of production and post harvest care. It is also encouraging the farmers to adopt

farm mechanization to address the labour shortage problem for long term economic developments. As is well known, right use of technology holds the key to sort out many problems in agriculture and allied sectors. Modern technology needs to be adopted to improve the functioning of the entire agricultural activities. It is against this background that Media Today Group, which has an impeccable track record in organising international trade fairs and conferences, is holding the 3rd edition of AgriTech India exhibition (www.agritechindia.com) concurrently with GrainTech India and DairyTech India. An International exhibition on agriculture, farm machineries equipment, dairy, poultry, live stock, aquaculture products and technology, will be held from 9 to 11 September at Palace Ground, Bangalore. Undoubtedly, AgriTech assumes greater significance in the context of the National Food Security Mission, launched by the government in 2007-08 to give a big boost to the production -- and productivity of rice, wheat and pulses through technological intervention in the Eleventh Five-year Plan. The exhibition will focus on transfer of technology to the farmers and farm mechanization. This will be particularly relevant in South India where farmers

Curtain Raiser - Agri Tech India grow a number of crops, but face problems in enhancing production and productivity because of inadequate exposure to high technology and inputs as also to advanced production practices, logistics and marketing. In, addition, shortage of labour is a major concern for progressive farmers of South India who are ready to offer more wages to labourers. Therefore, they are forced to become machinerydependent in their farm operations. As a result, South India is emerging as one of the hottest destinations for agriequipment purchases. In order to introduce latest mechanization & technological innovations, Agri Tech India 2011 is proved to be an ideal platform to launch your exclusive range of products and services among thousands of progressive farmers, agri entrepreneurs to throng this expo. The event has the full support of the Union Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MOFPI) and APEDA, all of which have a vital stake in increasing agriculture production to meet rising domestic demand and to promote food exports. While the Agriculture Ministry has a plethora of schemes to encourage adoption of latest technology to raise productivity levels in the farms, MOFPI has its focus on checking colossal losses of harvested food grains and horticulture produce by promoting value addition through use of latest technology. APEDA's role, on the other hand, becomes important as it has set its eyes on taking food exports from the country to a new high. The aim is to make India a “Food Basket of the world.” APEDA has set an export target of 15 billion dollars worth food products to be achieved in the coming years. The growers in southern region, undoubtedly as hardworking as elsewhere in the country, are handicapped by the fact that not many major international exhibitions and conferences are held there. These events, therefore, seeks to address this problem seriously. Partner Country Holland is bringing two trade delegations,

consisting Dutch Agri-Food Processing & Dairy players to explore technical tie-ups and joint ventures / investment opportunities in India. “We are opening new avenues of growth with this kind of trade delegations. Apart from trade and official delegations from Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Mozambique, Australia and New Zealand” said by Mr. M. B. Naqvi, CEO, Media Today Group. "It will be a unique event where working machines of over sixteen countries will be on display from agri-production to retail product deliveries. It is truly a complete agribusiness event” he said. To impart more value to the event, a two-day international conference is being planned. Appropriately, the theme of the conference is “Food Security through Technology”. The topics to be discussed at the conference are divided into three broad heads: International and domestic production scenario; Enhancing quality production and marketing through improved technology; Innovations in product development. Top officials and experts from the government of India, trade bodies, farming community and corporate sector are scheduled to participate in the discussions. Exhibitors from India and abroad will participate in the Expo. Last year trade visitors, from over 20 countries like The Netherlands, Bahrain, Iran, UAE, USA, Germany, Taiwan, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Kuwait, Jamaica, Greece, Pakistan, Israel, Uganda, Turkey, Ethiopia, UK, Spain, Belgium and Japan were at Expo. Frequently Asked Questions Q

e operate a sanitary sewage pumping plant, which frequently creates vortices at the pump inlet pipes. The pumps are mounted in a dry pit adjacent to the collecting tank. The vortices are reducing the pump flow and causing excessive vibration in the pumps. Increasing the liquid level over the pumps would be very expensive. What else can be done to eliminate the vortices?

Plates, splitters, vanes, etc. can be added to the collecting tank near the pump inlet pipe. These will inhibit the formation of vortices. Assuming that the pump inlet pipe is in the wall between the collecting tank and pump pit, two suggestions could be tried. Add a downward opening flanged elbow to the inlet pipe. This will lower the point where liquid enters and the flange on the elbow will reduce entrance velocity. If possible, use a reducing elbow to further increase the size of opening and flange diameter.

Flow re-circulation in the pump impeller -- This can also occur below 50% of BEP causing noise, vibration, cavitation and mechanical damage Total head characteristic curve Some pump curves droop toward shut off, and some VTP curves show a dip in the curve. Operation in such regions should be avoided. There is no standard which establishes precise limits for minimum flow in pumps, but ANSI/HI 9.6.3-1997 Centrifugal and Vertical Pumps Allowable Operating Region discusses all of the factors involved and provides recommendations for the “Preferred Operating Region.” Q.

In the Hydraulic Institute Standard HI 9.8 1998 Pump Intake Design, page 12, Figure 9.8.10, EXAMPLE-2 dimensions are shown relative to the pump can diameter. There are no criteria for the can diameter which becomes critical in this scheme. Can someone assume that the minimum can diameter is a can that accommodates the bowl outside diameter and then use that value as D1? Is any credit given to low header and can velocities, say 2.0 fps, with respect to the 3.0D1 dimension above the header? Is any credit given to the 3.0D1 dimension if it is at the end of the header such that it turns up into the pump and no flow goes past the pump, similar to example 3 but without the turning vane elbow and with the bottom of the pump above the top of the header?

A.

The diameter of the vertical can (riser) is the larger of either the pump bell diameter or that established to satisfy the requirement of V equal to 5 ft/sec. The standard does not provide for credit for lower can (riser) velocities nor for the riser at the end of the header.

Attach a horizontal baffle plate to the wall directly above the pump inlet pipe. The plate should have a length and width equal to 4 times the diameter of the pump inlet pipe. These solutions, and others, are discussed in a recently published 62 page standard, ANSI/HI 9.8-1998 Pump Intake Design addressing this subject. The standard provides design recommendations for a variety of different intakes for both solids bearing liquids and clear liquids. Q.

Some centrifugal pump manufacturers show a vertical dotted line on their pump rating curves with the notation “minimum allowable flow.” Is there a standard procedure for determining this limit? If not, what criteria are used to determine this value?

A.

The factors which determine minimum allowable rate of flow include the following: Temperature rise of the liquid -- This is usually established as 15°F and results in a very low limit. However, if a pump operates at shut off, it could overheat badly. Radial hydraulic thrust on impellers -- This is most serious with single volute pumps and, even at flow rates as high as 50% of BEP could cause reduced bearing life, excessive shaft deflection, seal failures, impeller rubbing and shaft breakage.

She started the campaign by initiating the planting of saplings in an area spread over one hectare along the Ring Road bypass. Speaking at the event in which a large number of school children also planted saplings, Ms. Dikshit said while the city has done extremely well in the field of greenery and pollution control, taking the green area up from 26 square km to over 300 square km. (over 20 per cent of total area), the effort will continue with same zeal and vigour as it has to achieve the target of 33 per cent green area. The Chief Minister said apart from undertaking greenery projects in new areas, the Delhi Government would also be working towards protecting the sapling and trees that have been planted. The city-wide campaign, she said, has been planned in association with all government offices, Delhi Metro, MCD, NDMC, DDA, DTC Depots, NGOs and PSUs to ensure its success. During the one-and-half-month campaign, the Delhi Government would provide assistance to these organisations to undertaking the greening exercise.

Ms. Dikshit said the Delhi Government would be providing free saplings across Delhi during the period. The species, the officials said, have been selected considering their suitability to the site and their aesthetic value to the road which is now the lifeline connecting ITO to ISBT Kashmere Gate.

However, Wipro said it may take 2-3 quarters to catch up with the growth rate of rivals like TCS and HCL Technologies on the back of a strong deal pipeline and organisational restructuring that it undertook at the beginning of the year. IT major Cognizant is all set to replace Wipro to become the country's third largest IT services provider when it announces its results on August 2. On the other hand, besides being bested on its numbers by larger rival TCS, India's No. 2 software exporter, Infosys also appears to be losing the tag it perhaps covets the most- that of being India's most admired IT brand. Scientists step closer to creating test tube intelligence Scientists have now taken a major step towards creating artificial intelligence, not in a robot or a silicon chip, but in a test tube. August - 2011

Researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have created a circuit of interacting molecules that can recall memories based on incomplete DNA patterns, just like the human brain. Consisting of four artificial neurons made from 112 distinct DNA strands, the researchers' neural network plays a mindreading game in which it tries to identify a mystery scientist, according to a Caltech statement. The researchers 'trained' the neural network to 'know' four scientists, whose identities are each represented by a specific, unique set of answers to four yesorno questions, such as whether the scientist was British. After thinking of a scientist, a human player provides an incomplete subset of answers partially identifying the scientist. This DNAbased neural network demonstrates the ability to take an incomplete pattern and figure out what it might represent one of the brain's unique features. Biochemical systems with artificial intelligence or at least some basic, decisionmaking capabilities could have powerful applications in medicine, chemistry, and biological research, the researchers say. In the future, such systems could operate within cells, helping to answer fundamental biological questions or diagnose a disease. The human brain consists of 100 billion neurons, but creating a network with just 40 of these DNAbased neurons 10 times larger than the demonstrated network would be a challenge, according to the researchers.

However bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was an impossible feat and told Roebling to forget the idea. It just could not be done. It was not practical. It had never been done before. Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge. He thought about it all the time and he knew deep in his heart that it could be done. He just had to share the dream with someone else. After much discussion and persuasion he managed to convince his son Washington, an up and coming engineer, that the bridge in fact could be built. Working together for the first time, the father and son developed concepts of how it could be accomplished and how the obstacles could be overcome. With great excitement and inspiration, and the headiness of a wild challenge before them, they hired their crew and began to build their dream bridge.

The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which resulted in him not being able to walk or talk or even move.

"We told them so." "Crazy men and their crazy dreams." "It`s foolish to chase wild visions." Everyone had a negative comment to make and felt that the project should be scrapped since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge could be built. In spite of his handicap Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning desire to complete the bridge and his mind was still as sharp as ever. He tried to inspire and pass on his enthusiasm to some of his friends, but they were too daunted by the task. As he lay on his bed in his hospital room, with the sunlight streaming

Inspirational Story - Determination through the windows, a gentle breeze blew the flimsy white curtains apart and he was able to see the sky and the tops of the trees outside for just a moment. It seemed that there was a message for him not to give up. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do was move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife. He touched his wife's arm with that finger, indicating to her that he wanted her to call the engineers again. Then he used the same method of tapping her arm to tell the engineers what to do. It seemed foolish but the project was under way again. For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife's arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory as a tribute to the triumph of one man's indomitable spirit and his determination not to be defeated

by circumstances. It is also a tribute to the engineers and their team work, and to their faith in a man who was considered mad by half the world. It stands too as a tangible monument to the love and devotion of his wife who for 13 long years patiently decoded the messages of her husband and told the engineers what to do. Perhaps this is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical handicap and achieves an impossible goal. Often when we face obstacles in our day-to-day life, our hurdles seem very small in comparison to what many others have to face. The Brooklyn Bridge shows us that dreams that seem impossible can be realised with determination and persistence, no matter what the odds are. Even the most distant dream can be realized with determination and persistence
