Aotearoa New Zealand
NEW ZEALAND QUICK GUIDE:
The Māori name for New Zealand is Aotearoa, "land of the long white cloud". New Zealand is an island country in the south-west Pacific comparable in size to the United Kingdom or the Philippines.
Geographic land size: 270,000 km2
New Zealand comprises the North and South Islands, and a host of smaller islands. Extensive areas are set aside as national parks. The North Island is mainly rolling hill country, much of which is farmed. The South Island is divided by the Southern Alps, which run most of its length and rise to over 3,000m. Nowhere in New Zealand is more than 130km from the sea. New Zealand is a peaceful, safe and friendly country, providing exciting lifestyle and adventure opportunities in a multicultural environment. This makes New Zealand a ‘choice’ place for thousands of students to consider for a quality education. With a population of just over 4.4 million, New Zealand is one of the least crowded places on the planet. It is a modern country with advanced technology, a culture of research and development, with a mixed economy that operates on free market principles. New Zealand businesses are typically small: 97% employ fewer than 20 people. There are excellent business and employment opportunities for students.
Population: 4.4 million
People per square kilometre: 14.9 Capital city: Wellington Official languages: English, Māori and New Zealand Sign Language Main international airport: Auckland Political environment: Stable parliamentary democracy Prime Minister: Mr John Key Major ethnic groups: European, Māori, Pacific, Asian Major industries: Primary products exportation, tourism, education, manufacturing, medical research, and growing creative industries such as film making and fashion design More information: www.newzealand.com
New Zealand is affordable for students to live here and experience the great outdoors and adventure playground, culture and arts, education and student life on and off campus. Its image is that of a clean and green environment, mountains and lakes, cities and beaches, with warm and friendly people.

THIS IS MY STORY Qiao Hao
CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH Qiao Hao has gained a whole new perspective since moving to New Zealand with her husband. Studying English at Waiariki Institute of Technology, she’s found herself in a very supportive environment with small classrooms offering plenty of one-on-one time with tutors. In Tianjan, China, a city of more than 10 million where she was a primary school teacher, there are classrooms of 200 students. At Waiariki she usually finds herself one of about 15. “Moving to Rotorua was a very big change for me, from an over-populated country to an underpopulated one … but it has been a good change for me.” Qiao Hao has a master’s in science from China and is keen to become a secondary school teacher in New Zealand. Teaching, she says, is her passion. “I could teach science and also Chinese language but first I need to improve my English. Whatever path I choose, English is the step to getting there.” Mum to a six-year-old daughter and two-year-old son, Qiao Hao has to juggle motherhood with her studies and that means some long days. But she says the hard work will be worth it when she achieves her goals. Qiao Hao enjoys the privacy living in a small city like Rotorua offers. “The parks are amazing, you’re often all alone, it’s like it belongs to you – it’s totally relaxing. “I’ve never felt like an outsider in Rotorua or at Waiariki. I feel like part of the community. People are very welcoming, people you don’t even know will smile at you and say hello.” She believes studying overseas is a great option for people from her country and others around the world. “There are many benefits from experiencing different cultures and learning a new language. Waiariki has given me a great opportunity.”

THIS IS MY STORY
Abhinav Gupta
GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN APPLIED MANAGEMENT Abhinav Gupta was keen to gain a more international perspective before launching into a career in business. He has big ambitions. When he finishes his qualification at Waiariki Institute of Technology in December he hopes to find work in New Zealand to gain more practical experience in the hopes of one day working for a multinational corporation or perhaps starting his own business. His family owns a sawmill in India and working in the business at management level is also an option. “My father wanted me to get exposure to overseas business practices and I chose to study at Waiariki. I want to work in business innovation.” When he finishes his graduate diploma he may stay on to gain an accounting qualification, something he had intended to pursue after gaining a Bachelor of Commerce in India before coming to New Zealand. Abhinav says Waiariki has been good to him. “It is a good place to learn. My course is very interesting and the tutors and infrastructure are good.” While he’s studying Abhinav has chosen to take just a weekend job to help fund his time at Waiariki, keen to focus fully on his studies during the week. “I’m enjoying my time in Rotorua and New Zealand – it is quite a beautiful place.”

A Sikh from Amritsar in India, Manjinder is motivated by a desire to provide a good life for himself, his parents, his wife Amardeep Kaur and their young daughter Harmanpreet Kaur who remain in India while he studies in New Zealand but will eventually join him. He relishes the technical elements of his Waiariki studies. “The course really suits me and interests me and I know others who have studied this are now in jobs in New Zealand,” he says. “It’s a good environment here – it’s safe, you can have a good lifestyle and there are good opportunities. I would like to stay and work in New Zealand after finishing my studies. “I was working at executive levels in India but I’m not in a hurry to get to the top. REX AUSTRIA, DIPLOMA IN CULINARY ARTS LAURA ADRIANO, DIPLOMA IN HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT DIGRAJ (“DJ”) BAGHELA, DIPLOMA IN CULINARY ARTS A trio of students studying in the culinary and hospitality fields are getting a bonus experience through Waiariki Institute of Technology. Digraj (“DJ”) Baghela and Rex Austria, who are studying to become chefs and Laura Adriano, who is studying hospitality management, are the institute’s 2012 team for the prestigious Nestlé Toque d’Or competition which will judge them on the food they produce and the service they present. While there is a lot of hard work involved in practising prior to the competition, all three say it is proving a worthwhile experience, helping them to hone the skills they are learning. When they finish their qualifications, they will have skills they can use anywhere in the world and all three aspire to making their mark. While DJ, who hails from Udaipur in India, and Rex from the Philippines both have dreams of working in top restaurants in the future, Laura wants to become a hotel manager and all three are considering taking other courses at Waiariki when their current ones are finished. They say Waiariki has been a good place for them to learn and that Rotorua is good place to live. “It is a very friendly, accepting place and if you work hard in New Zealand, you will be rewarded,” says DJ. The Toque d’Or team members have all worked in various jobs in Rotorua, DJ and Rex in cafés and restaurants and Laura in hotels and now Skyline’s restaurant, helping them to further develop the skills they are learning at Waiariki and build their confidence. “There are plenty of job opportunities here for people doing the courses we do,” says Laura. “I’m lucky I came to New Zealand,” Rex says. “It has allowed me experiences I would not have got elsewhere. I have a better life here.”

THIS IS MY STORY
Adi-Losalini Cegumalua
BACHELOR OF NURSING Adi-Losalini Cegumalua is continuing the legacy of her beloved grandmother. The 20-year-old nursing student’s grandmother was a nurse and midwife in their village in Fiji. Adi grew up watching her work and it inspired her to also become a nurse. Her grandmother encouraged her to study overseas to learn more modern, advanced skills and practices so she could one day return to Fiji to share her knowledge and help improve health services in the Pacific Islands nation. Adi radiates a warm, caring spirit and is excited about what her future may hold. In her first year of a three-year course at Waiariki Institute of Technology, she has particularly enjoyed the practical aspects. Students get the opportunity to put what they learn into practice through placements in the community and Adi has already worked at Rotorua Hospital. “It was very satisfying and rewarding to help patients and then see them leave, knowing I had been part of their healing.” Living with an aunt in Rotorua enables Adi to retain links to her family and church, making the transition to New Zealand easier. Rotorua’s small size has also helped. “Fiji is very small so I feel safer being in a smaller place. The scenery here is very nice too and everything is close. It feels like home. I have found it very easy to settle here.” Adi says a very supportive environment at Waiariki is helping her to do well in her studies and she hopes to work in New Zealand after graduating, before returning to Fiji. “I want to learn more modern ways so that one day I can share what I have learned with my peers in Fiji to help change things there. Coming to Rotorua has been a good decision.” Adi’s grandmother, who passed away two years ago, would certainly be proud.

THIS IS MY STORY
Savithri Seneviratne
DIPLOMA OF TEACHING (EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION): TE PŌKAIRUA WHAKAAKO KŌHUNGAHUNGA Following a fast-paced, stressful career in advertising, Savithri Seneviratne pushed the pause button to be a stay-at-home mum to her two children. She then looked to find a new career, one that was less stressful and more importantly, was flexible and would allow her more time with her children, now aged 10 and 7. Teaching called. She had always wanted to be a teacher and had worked as a volunteer for disadvantaged youngsters. But her teacher training opportunities in Sri Lanka were limited so she looked elsewhere and made the move to New Zealand after deciding to study at Waiariki Institute of Technology. She hasn’t looked back since, loves her new life in Rotorua and enjoys studying at Waiariki which she says provides a lot of support for overseas students. “Rotorua is a good place to start. It’s not as daunting as being in a big city would be and my family and I really feel like part of the community. My husband is enjoying it here and my children love it. We could not have done this if they had not been happy here. “I’m also truly glad for the experience I’m having at Waiariki – it has been good all the way.” Adding to her experience is the chance to mix with students from many different countries and learn about them and their cultures, something she believes will stand her in good stead as a teacher. “Being able to work with children from many different backgrounds is important for teachers and I love learning about other cultures,” she says. Part of Savithri’s training involves getting practical experience in early childhood facilities and she has also been able to pick up some relief work which she believes will be a real advantage in helping her to gain her diploma.
TEACHING Diploma in Early Childhood Education Duration: 1 year full time Qualification Details This qualification prepares students who seek to undertake further study in their education development and complete their course at a level suitable for consideration at a higher tertiary study level. This qualification provides a useful staircase to tertiary academic qualifications and work-related skills programmes offered by Waiariki. Upon completion, graduates will have a developing range of knowledge and skills across key elements of early childhood education, allowing them to progress into employment as a homebased early childhood provider, nanny or teacher aid.
Applicants must have evidence of academic ability (success at NZQA Level 4 or equivalent) and ability to succeed (this may be demonstrated through personal references or testimonials of life and work experience). If you have a driver’s licence, bring it with you – this makes it easier to obtain a New Zealand licence. Bring about six passport size photos with you. Bring your own sports gear, e.g., squash racquet, badminton racquet, etc. These may cost more in New Zealand. The exception is good quality hockey sticks, which are less expensive in New Zealand. Give up smoking before you arrive. In New Zealand it is illegal to smoke in public areas such as restaurants and bars, and homestays will not allow smoking in their homes. Remember there are weight limits for the luggage you can bring to New Zealand without paying excess baggage fees. Bring your national costume for the International Nights – very popular entertainment, fun and a cultural extravaganza!
Money
Medical and Travel Insurance International students, including groups of students, must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while in New Zealand. The cost of medical and travel insurance is $530 per year. Uni-Care is our preferred insurance provider. It is important to understand the inclusions stated in their Policy for the New Zealand Student Plan found at www.uni-care.org.
Employment The following websites can be very helpful in finding employment while in New Zealand: www.seek.co.nz www.trademe.co.nz www.sjs.co.nz (Student Job Search)

Students should commit to staying at least one month with the homestay family, as it takes some time for you to adjust to life in Rotorua, and for you and your family to adjust to each other.

Cost Comparisons We have picked a few items to give you an understanding of some day to day costs in New Zealand.
Waiariki House is a hostel that provides quality accommodation at reasonable rates for students. The hostel is located in the heart of Rotorua, just a short walk to many amenities and an easy city bus ride to the Rotorua campus. Waiariki House provides a clean, safe, secure and friendly atmosphere. It is a privately owned company independent from Waiariki Institute of Technology, and is our preferred hostel. Students from many countries, including New Zealand, stay at and enjoy Waiariki House – the best of both worlds – independence and support. Sign up for a minimum of one semester accommodation at Waiariki House and get a special rate. Visit www. studentaccom.co.nz for more information.
Flatting (Sharing a House)
Beer 375ml from supermarket..........$3
In New Zealand the word “flatting” means to rent a house with others (“flatmates”) who may be students or friends. A bond is an initial payment required for security by landlords when offering their premises for rental. Typically landlords will require you to pay in advance two weeks in rental fees and two weeks rental before you can move in. The bond is held by the Department of Building and Housing.
