EXPECTATIONS

WHAT CAN MOUNT COLLEGE OFFER PARENT COMMUNICATION Honest and open two-way communication between parents and school is vitally important. We pride ourselves on being large enough to give a full range of opportunities but small enough to see each student as an individual.

2

• an up-to-date website • access to live assessment and attendance data via web portal • one progress and two formal reports per year • two parent / teacher interview evenings following each report issue

Student development and social interaction need to be such that everyone can find success while at school, ensuring they are well prepared for life when they leave. Our expectations are that students: • attend school regularly • be prepared for work

• strive to do better • show respect for others • be punctual • keep away from out-of-bound areas • maintain a communication link between school and home. These expectations underpin our specific school rules. The rules regard attendance, behaviour, classroom environment, health and safety, uniform, care of property and out-of-bounds areas.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP At Mount Maunganui College we place great importance on providing opportunities for student leadership. We encourage a wide range of leadership opportunities at each year level. Leadership roles develop confidence and independence and allow students to take on a full role in society later in their lives. At Mount Maunganui College we have vertical committees (Years 9-13) that represent the interests of students, our community, the arts and sport. Elected student leaders run each of the councils. The Year 13 students who run the committees coordinate a wide range of activities for students and also have an important role in running assemblies and special awards evenings. Through their committees they canvas a wide range of student opinion that is fed back to the senior management of the college for consideration in decision making. Mount Maunganui College recognises the very important role students play in their leadership capacity. These students have a high profile and a key role in the management of a wide range of student activities.

What can you expect from us? This prospectus outlines our vision for the school and what we see as our key goals for our students. We do not make these promises lightly. We are committed to providing excellent educational opportunities and are energetic in our efforts to ensure every student makes the most of what we offer.

ASSISTED LEARNING PROGRAMME Students who have special learning difficulties are placed in the Alternative Learning Programme to allow for them to receive more individualised teaching.

GATE (GIFTED AND TALENTED)

Every student has the right and the responsibility to achieve to their potential

Students who show that they have special talent in particular areas of the curriculum or extra curricular activities are identified and encouraged to extend their talents through a programme that is designed for them in consultation with the student, parents and programme co-ordinator. Accelerated classes will be targeted for extension programmes. The GATE Coordinator will also arrange for after school workshops for Year 9 students and Year 8 students from the contributing schools. The different faculty areas in the college create each workshop. Virtual School to School programmes are also being trialled.

6

We will academically stream our Year 9, 10 and 11 classes (with the exception being the Elite Sports Performance classes). This will enable us to narrow the ability range within each class so that our teachers can better focus on the common learning needs within the group as well as cater for individual needs. Opportunities are available for students to

shift levels as their potential develops. The College is a member of the GATE project which provides extension enrichment programmes for gifted and talented students. A number of classes will provide additional support to those students with significant learning needs.

ENHANCED LEARNING PROGRAMME Every endeavour is made at Mount Maunganui College to meet the needs of our students. To accomplish this goal we have created a number of programmes to support the various talents and requirements of the students.

ELITE PERFORMING ARTS / SPORTS PERFORMANCE Contributing schools are approached to identify talented performing arts / sports students while they are in Year 8. Students are invited to apply for the Elite Performing Arts / Sports Performance Programme and then assessed by staff working in the programme. After this assessment, students are enrolled in the programme after signing an agreement in which they commit to meeting the course requirements, including regular training sessions, mentoring and ongoing dedication to their preferred sport or discipline.

are grouped in classes of similar ability and extended to the utmost.

All classes are streamed by ability into three bands. The top two classes in the A Band are further streamed so that the top English and Mathematics students are placed together for their learning. Experience shows that perhaps only 45-50% of students are equally talented in English and Mathematics and therefore this refined streaming allows for the teachers to work at a more advanced level with the top students in each discipline.
