OUR APPROACH to YOUR LEARNING At ACG Senior College, our approach to learning is likely to be different from anything you have experienced before - refreshingly so, as we recognise that the future will look very different from the present. New technologies and subjects are an integral part of ACG Senior College, while students explore new areas of interest and develop collaborative problem-solving and research skills. Students are encouraged to become responsible risk-takers and critical thinkers. Sounds exciting? It is. As a College, we aim to be flexible and to meet the needs of the individual. Effective use of time is the key. Class periods are longer than at most secondary schools. Our logic is that such lessons allow students and teachers to explore subjects and issues together in greater depth. The extended day also provides greater opportunities to undertake personal study, research and discovery outside of structured class times. This approach is what is expected at tertiary institutions. We believe that we should start to prepare our students now. Our teachers are carefully selected and savour their opportunity to teach at ACG Senior College. Many have experience in senior teaching positions and have been examiners, moderators or markers for national and international external examinations.

They are constantly striving to offer our students the very best tuition. They are experienced specialist teachers who are passionate about their subjects. They place great importance on the learning process and are keen to help each student to succeed. Our students can select from a wide range of subjects in the Arts, Business, Humanities, Languages, Mathematics, IT and Science Faculties. We also provide the unexpected, the unique and the challenging by offering innovative subjects such as Thinking Skills, Psychology, Research and Stage 1 University of Auckland Classics. Our dedication to developing the individual is reflected in our extra curricular activities. These include musical theatre classes, a vocal group, jazz and rock bands, drama productions, art exhibitions, debating and sports teams. Leadership opportunities are also on offer, such as: ■

The Social Awareness and Responsibility Committee (SARC): Manages projects that contribute to the social well-being of others

The Senior Independent: A newspaper run and funded by the students

Senior Scholars’ Group: Fosters scholarship. Students develop and present a lecture series; fundraising and tutoring.

UNIVERSITY of CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL EXAMINATIONS University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) is one of the world’s leading providers of international assessments. CIE is part of Cambridge Assessment which is a department of the world renowned University of Cambridge. Cambridge Assessment has developed and promoted qualifications around the world for 150 years and has seen the need for internationally recognised qualifications continue to grow. CIE was formally established in 1998 to provide high quality, leading edge qualifications that meet the ongoing demands of educators and employers the world over. Today, CIE provides international courses, examinations and qualifications to over 150 different countries. In New Zealand, over 40 schools are members of the Association of Cambridge Schools in New Zealand. CIE combines the best of international curricula with New Zealand based courses, such as New Zealand History, History of Art and Drama. ACG Senior College students have consistently excelled in CIE since the first exams were held at the College in 2001. In the most recent University

of Cambridge International Examinations, the results of our students were outstanding. A total of 11 “Top in the World” and 27 “Top in New Zealand” subject awards were gained.

Why CIE? ■

Rigour: Demanding courses that stretch all students

Flexibility: Students may choose the level of their study to suit their ability

Range of Subjects: Giving students a choice of 64 different subjects in Years 11 to 13

International Benchmarking: International qualifications that benchmark students’ results against the best in the world

Portability: CIE qualifications are accepted and recognised by universities, education providers and employers across the globe.

I had a wonderful time attending ACG Senior College. Without it I do not think I would be as ready for the ‘big wide world’ as I am now!
