Sergey Zavyalov
Teacher of English, New Zealand Institute of Choice Certificate in Language Teaching graduate “My career satisfies me mentally, spiritually and financially. I’ve already worked with a couple of hundred students and I’m definitely continuing to teach, at the New Zealand Institute of Choice and in evening classes. I might also join a tertiary institution to get another teaching qualification, maybe do a masters degree or even a PhD. The Certificate in Language Teaching is 100% relevant in class and for my professional development. I especially liked the practical lessons on Saturdays, but I loved all aspects of the programme. The staff were always helpful, and I enjoyed the everyday communication with my classmates and the tutors.”
Sun Ae Choi
Bachelor of Nursing student Graduate Certificate in English as an Additional Language graduate “English is an amazing tool that bridges people together. I decided to study the Graduate Certificate in English as an Additional Language at Unitec because I wanted to improve my English skills and learn more about Kiwi culture. Learning a language takes time but once you have started the journey it will expand your horizons. I have gained so much confidence through the language study and am now more accustomed to academic study. I can now have discussions with my classmates – it’s like a totally different world, one that I hadn’t experienced before. Last semester, for example, I got an A+ in my anatomy and physiology paper, and I think I am the only one. My English skills definitely helped me achieve that. I also get on pretty well with all of my classmates.”
Norka Mella
Chef Tutor, Auckland Hotel and Chefs Training School Certificate in English graduate “Food is my greatest passion – I come from a country where family, food and celebration are one and the same. I really wanted to pass this love of food on to my students. The problem was that my English wasn’t really good enough for teaching. That’s why I decided to study the Certificate in English at Unitec. I just loved the multicultural student environment at Unitec, and the tutors were very supportive. Making a presentation in front of many people in a different language can be difficult, but the final class presentation about my work experience was fun and exciting at the same time. The programme made me more confident about my English skills and has helped me achieve my dream of being a chef tutor. I love being in the kitchen, cooking and sharing my experience with the students.”

Te Ao Māori is an exciting and enduring culture that has shaped Aotearoa society, and is an integral part of our contemporary lifestyle.
Mātauranga Māori
Choose one of these inspiring Mātauranga Māori electives and you will be taught by some of the best lecturers in an authentic tikanga Māori environment (a learning atmosphere guided by Māori protocols). This suite of electives explores the many layers of Māori culture; te reo Māori (the Māori language), the protocols of marae, Māori philosophy and cosmology, and arts such as tā moko (tattooing) and raranga (weaving). On some of the courses, you’ll enjoy the unique opportunity of learning in our very own marae, Te Noho Kotahitanga. Ahakoa ko wai, no hea koe, ko tēnei te wā! No matter who you are or where you are from, this is the time to immerse yourself in the richness of te ao Māori – the Māori world.
Te Reo me ona Tikanga Tahi
Learn the basics of te reo Māori, the Māori language. The style of learning on this course is based on traditional Māori protocols, which emphasise oral skills. This elective is for those with little or no prior knowledge of te reo.
Te Reo me ona Tikanga Rua
Further develop and strengthen your reo Māori me ona tikanga. You will learn how to speak, write and understand the language in a variety of settings. This elective is for those with some basic understanding of te reo.
Tikanga Marae Tahi
Explore the cultural significance and purpose of the marae, the powhiri (welcoming ceremony), the wharenui (the main house) and the traditional protocols still utilised on contemporary marae. Participate in tikanga marae with confidence. No prior knowledge necessary.
Toi Māori Tahi
This elective is great for those who are interested in design and visual arts. It will broaden your knowledge of toi Māori (Māori art) through the mediums of whakairo (carving), raranga (weaving), ta moko (tattooing) taonga puoro (musical instruments), as well as contemporary Māori artists.
Mana Motuhake
Gain the knowledge and skills in Mātauranga Māori to develop your cultural identity and engage with confidence in Māori settings.
Understanding Te Ao Māori
Get insight into Māori history and the world of Māori, and look at the impact of change on Māori culture and society.
