Study at MIT At MIT you can choose from a wide range of courses from certificates and diplomas right through to degrees. The beauty of MIT is that you study wherever you’ll get the very best learning experience. Our Maritime School looks out over Auckland’s Downtown Waterfront. Our Motorsport Centre is perfectly located near the Pukekohe Park Raceway. And if you want to learn about Floristry, you can do it at the Floramax flower auction house in Mt Wellington. In addition to the main Manukau campus, there are specialised campuses around Auckland, including locations at 277 Broadway, Newmarket and 246 Queen Street. MIT is a place for all people. The diverse ethnic and cultural mix of our students is one of the first things you’ll notice about studying at MIT. But being an MIT student is not just about studying. Getting involved in student activities and campus life is all part of the experience – and a great way to meet people. Some of the exciting activities include orientation events, sports teams and clubs, cultural week and bands playing on campus. There’s a whole lot more information on our website. Just go to www.manukau.ac.nz and click on ‘Study Areas’.

New Zealand New Zealand is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean made up of two main landmasses - the North Island and the South Island. It is a multi-cultural and ethnically diverse country, home to over four million people. While most immigrants still come from the United Kingdom, Ireland and South Africa, immigration from mainland China, Korea, India, Taiwan, Japan, and Hong Kong is rapidly increasing. The economy is modern, prosperous and well developed, relying heavily on international trade, particularly in agricultural products with about half of all exports being agriculture, horticulture, fishing, forestry and mining. Its major export partners are Australia, United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, and China. About three years ago, the New Zealand China Free Trade Agreement was signed, the first such agreement China has signed with a developed country. Tourism also plays a significant role in the economy, thanks to New Zealand’s spectacular scenery coupled with its reputation as a safe and welcoming country. In fact, international visitors are expected to increase at a rate of 2.5 percent each year up to 2015. New Zealand is a big sporting nation with a huge range of sports on offer including rugby, golf, netball, cricket, rugby league, softball, triathlon, rowing, yachting, cycling, fishing, swimming, running, tramping, canoeing, hunting, snowsports and surfing. The country is also known for its extreme sports, adventure tourism and strong mountaineering tradition.

Auckland The city of Auckland is a fantastic place to live and study. As New Zealand’s largest city, over 30 percent of New Zealand’s population live here (just over 1.3 million people). It has a temperate climate with warm, humid summers and mild, damp winters. It is the warmest main centre of New Zealand as well as one of the sunniest, with an average of 2060 sunshine hours each year. The average daily maximum temperature is 23.7 °C in February, and 14.5°C in July. The city lies on a thin slither of land between two harbours, one of the few cities in the world to do so. This makes Auckland an absolute marine playground with countless stunning beaches within easy reach as well as great access to boating and fishing. Auckland is a naturally beautiful city too, with large areas of native bush, farmland, parks and all kinds of outdoor recreation facilities to keep you busy. As a thriving cultural centre, there’s an impressive calendar of concerts, shows and sporting events. You’ll also find world class cafés, bars and restaurants throughout Auckland, from the humming city centre and waterfront right out to the many suburbs that make up this sprawling metropolis. It’s hardly surprising that Auckland was recently voted the 4th best city in the world to live in by the 2010 Mercer Quality of Living Survey.

Graduate Certificates
A programme leads to a qualification and is usually made up of a number of courses.
Graduate certificates can be registered at level 7 and have a minimum of 60 credits from levels 5 to 7. A minimum of 45 credits is required at level 7.
Credits A system of credits is used to show the approximate length of time it will take a student to meet the requirements of an individual course. This includes teaching, assessment, and personal study. One credit is about 10 hours of total learning time. For example, it will take a student about 200 hours to complete a 20 credit course. A year long, full–time programme of study is represented by 120 credits (about 1200 hours).
Levels Each course is classified at a level between 1 and 8. These levels indicate the intellectual demand and complexity of skills required to successfully complete the course.
Certificates of Achievement Certificates of Achievement have no more than 39 credits and can be at any level.
Certificates Certificates are made up of courses at levels 1 to 5. A certificate requires at least 40 credits (often more). If the certificate has a stated level, at least 40 credits must be at that level or higher. Some certificates provide a broad introduction to a range of skills in a particular subject. Certificates at levels 3 and 4 are often needed for entry into trades, craft and service occupations. They also provide entry to diploma programmes.
Diplomas Diplomas are made up of courses that total at least 120 credits. At least 75 credits are at level 5 or higher. If the diploma has a stated level, at least 72 credits must be at that level or higher. The diploma will require at least one year of full–time study or two years part–time. Diplomas are often required for entry to advanced trade, technical and professional occupations.
Degrees Bachelor degrees usually include courses at levels 5 to 7. Bachelor degrees usually take three years of full–time study (or part–time equivalent), and some can take four or five years.
