Curriculum to meet “ Choices students needs and directions. v.�

Junior School (Years 9 and 10) Kaiapoi High School has designed a curriculum for Years 9 and 10 which meets the requirements of the National Curriculum.

Year 9 At Year 9 students study a compulsory course of English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Technology, Health and Physical Education, the Arts (Visual Art, Drama, Dance and Music) and the option of a language (selected from Japanese, French or Te Reo). All Year 9s also go on an Outdoor Education camp.

Year 10 At Year 10 students study a compulsory course of English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education, and select from a range of half year and full year courses in the Arts (Drama, Dance, Music and Visual Art), Technology (Graphics, Hard Materials, Soft Materials, Food Technology, Biotechnology) and Languages (Japanese, French or Te Reo).

Senior School (Years 11, 12 and 13) Year 11 At Year 11 students have a compulsory course of English, Mathematics and Science. They select three other subjects from an extensive range of options: Physical Education, History, Agriculture, Home Economics, Health, Music, Visual Art, Drama, Economics/Accounting, Sport and Recreation, Graphics, Outdoor Education, Fashion Design, Hard Materials Technology, Te Reo, French, Japanese, Dance, Social Studies, Digital Technologies, Food Technology, Food and Nutrition and Hospitality and Catering.

Year 12 At Year 12 students select six courses from: English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Agriculture, Biology, Physical Education, History, Home Economics, Health, Music, Visual Art, Drama, Media Studies, Economics, Accounting, Graphics, Outdoor Education, Fashion Design, Hard Materials Technology, Te Reo, French, Japanese, Social Studies, Digital Technologies, Legal Studies, Skills for Living, Sound and Recording, Photography, Classics, Outdoor Education Leadership, Sport and Recreation, Business Studies, Electronics, Environmental Studies, Sport Performance, Outdoor Education, Hospitality and Catering, Food Technology, Food and Nutrition and Home Economics. They also have the opportunity to participate in Work Experience, Gateway and tertiary courses at Polytechnic and University.

Students also have the opportunity to enrol in Gateway, which is a new pathway from school to the world of work. Gateway is an opportunity to combine school and workplace learning. During the year the school has visits from tertiary institutions. Students also visit Career Expo as part of the Careers planning that the students participate in.

Kaiapoi High School warmly welcomes applications for enrolment from overseas students and values its contact with students from other cultures. Kaiapoi is a town of 12,000 residents, 20 minutes by car from Christchurch International Airport. The town provides a safe and clean environment and easy access to city amenities. Courses of study prepare students for national qualifications including entrance

for New Zealand universities and English language tests. Senior class sizes are usually small and students are encouraged to achieve to their full potential. The school welcomes students at all year levels.

ESOL ESOL or English support is available where required. A fully trained and very experienced teacher plans a full ESOL programme. Opportunity is provided for

motivated and able students to sit IELTS, TOEFL and TOEIC examinations.

Entry Requirements English language ability at elementary level for Year 9 and 10, intermediate at Year 11 and 12, advanced at Year 13 or IELTS 5.5 or equivalent.

Home Stay The school arranges homestays. The Homestay Coordinator supervises homestay arrangements, deals with any problems and gives assistance as needed. Most students can walk to school from their homestay. Some students can travel by school bus.

Code of Practice Kaiapoi High School is a signatory to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. Copies of the Code are available on request from this institution or from the NZ Ministry of Education website which is www.minedu.govt.nz.

Sport, Culture and Activities Beyond the Kaiapoi High School aims to assist students to ‘Be the Best You Can Be’, in whatever field or interest they pursue. Students are encouraged to become involved in a wide range of co-curricular activities. Kaiapoi High School has a proud sports record at local and national level. Our sport ‘Hall of Fame’ recognises students who achieve at the highest level. Kaiapoi High Schools full-time Sports Co-ordinator organises opportunities and support for students in their chosen sport. The school is part of the Christchurch Secondary Schools’ competition and has annual sports exchanges with Buller, Kaikoura and Mountain View High Schools and hosts schools from overseas.

Maori Culture is encouraged through the Whanau form classes. Kapa Haka is a valued component of school ceremony. Other activities which enjoy strong student involvement/participation are:

Kaiapoi High School has a wellestablished Music, Drama and Visual Arts programme. Music provides options outside of the teaching programmes for tuition in a range of instruments (including voice), and Rock Bands and small groups are provided with the opportunity to perform and hone their skills.

Drama is becoming increasingly popular as a co-curricular option. Stage Challenge debuted in 2008 and involved 78 students. Theatre Sports, the Secondary Schools’ Shakespeare Festival and school productions also provide opportunities for talented students. Visual Arts are developing experiences for students with gallery exhibitions and displays of student work. The school has recently begun offering Dance classes to interested students and has offered NCEA Level 1 Dance for the first time in 2010.

Kaiapoi High School has a strong student voice. Student leaders include the positions of Head Student (boy and girl), Deputy Head Students (two boys and two girls), House Captains, School Council, Magazine, Formal, Mentoring, Environment etc. The student body is divided into four houses, Kauri, Matai, Rimu and Totara. Every student is in a form class linked to a house. The House system provides a base for developing leadership, inter-house competition and a positive collegial school spirit.

Kaiapoi High School has clear expectations for our school community with respect to conduct, presentation and attitude. These are based on the core values of the school of Respect, Integrity, Community and Excellence. Kaiapoi High School has incorporated Restorative Practice into our philosophy to deal with issues that arise from non-compliance

and the breakdown of positive relationships in teaching, learning and social settings. This enables a schoolwide culture of mutual respect, care and support to prevail even in the case of wrongdoing and conflict. Kaiapoi High School endeavours to meet the needs of all individuals and Restorative Practice allows all parties to be fairly treated and positive resolutions to be obtained. Restorative Practice can include the use of outside agencies, alternative education facilities and reflection time in arriving at a solution that best meets the needs of the individual and school community.

Special Programmes Recognising that some students need extra extension and others may benefit from support in their learning, the school provides wide ranging learning support programmes. Enrichment programmes are provided for high achieving students within their subjects and in other areas of general interest. Particular individual needs can be discussed with staff at the time of enrolment. Individual programmes will be developed when necessary.
