Nelson Campus Nelson-Tasman Region Discover the sunny paradise that is Nelson-Tasman – a perfect blend of vibrant city-life and beautiful landscapes at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. The Nelson-Tasman region receives New Zealand’s highest sunshine hours and covers five distinct areas – the vibrant urban centres of Richmond and historic Nelson; the idyllic coastline of Abel Tasman National Park to explore by foot, boat or kayak; the rugged wilderness of Kahurangi National Park – a perfect playground for hiking, fishing and caving; Nelson Lakes National Park at the tip of the Southern Alps with its forests, craggy mountains and clear streams; and the charming rural areas of Mapua, Ruby Bay, Moutere and Mahana, dotted with country pubs, picnic spots and world-class wineries.

Nelson Nelson is home to over 320 shops, as well as award-winning cafés and restaurants. Visitors enjoy a mix of international chain stores, designer boutiques, jewellery stores, souvenir outlets and galleries. Our sunny city is also known for its colourful markets where you can find an inspiring array of arts, crafts, designer garments, artisan foods and more. Nelson is also the official geographical centre of New Zealand. For a taste of Nelson’s nightlife, head down to Bridge Street for a variety of different venues from cocktail bars and pool halls to jumping, pumping clubs to suit everyone’s idea of a great night out. Nelson has something for everyone with its many other attractions ` including theatres, cinemas, art galleries, museums, swimming pools, fitness centres and sports clubs. Nelson-Tasman has a combined population of 93,000.
Nelson Campus NMIT’s Nelson Campus is situated just minutes walk from Nelson’s vibrant city centre. It is the larger of two main campuses, with around 3,000 students on campus at any one time. The Nelson Campus features new apartment-style student accommodation, a library learning centre, hair and beauty salons and a student café offering great coffee.

Marlborough is famous worldwide for its zesty Sauvignon Blanc wine and is New Zealand’s largest winemaking region. The region is also known for its idyllic Sounds – sunken valleys where native forests meet the ocean, forming one-fifth of New Zealand’s coastline. Visitors to the Sounds can explore the area by boat or ‘tramp’ along the Queen Charlotte Track - 71 kilometres of spectacular walking tracks that pass by historic sites, coastal bush and secluded bays. Other activities on offer include scenic boat cruising, fishing, water-skiing, kayaking and swimming with dolphins.

The commercial hub of Marlborough is Blenheim (population 43,000) which is home to two art galleries; a three-theatre cinema complex; live theatre venues; an undercover sporting complex with a heated swimming pool; as well as many shops, cafés and restaurants.

Marlborough Campus Specialising in viticulture and primary industries, NMIT’s Marlborough Campus is the smaller of the Institute’s two main campuses. Situated about 20 minutes’ walk from Blenheim city centre, the attractive campus boasts an on-site vineyard, hair salon, beauty salon, library and student café. Also on-site is the Marlborough Wine Research Centre which features a state of the art winery, laboratories and sensory wine tasting room. Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) Base Woodbourne NMIT’s aircraft maintenance engineering students train at RNZAF Base Woodbourne where NMIT’s Aviation programme is based. Here, they receive hands-on training with real aircraft and can take advantage of the excellent facilities on base. The base is situated about ten minutes’ drive from Blenheim. Creative Industries
NMIT’s brand new Arts and Media complex opened its doors in 2011 and has been purpose built to enhance students’ creativity. Students studying ARTS AND MEDIA in Nelson can select certificate, diploma or degree level options, specialising in visual arts & design, contemporary music, writing for creative industries or graphics and multimedia.
Aircraft Engineering
NMIT’s AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE engineering students study at the Royal New Zealand Air Force Base in Woodbourne, about 10 minutes’ drive from Blenheim in the Marlborough region. During this challenging twoyear certificate, students receive practical training on real aircraft.

Viticulture and Winemaking
The Marlborough region is New Zealand’s largest and fastest growing wine region, producing over 50 per cent of the country’s total wine production. Students may study VITICULTURE and WINE PRODUCTION to diploma or degree level at NMIT’s Marlborough Campus. The campus boasts top quality wine facilities including an on-site vineyard, winery and modern well equipped teaching laboratory.

NMIT offers BUSINESS and IT qualifications at degree and graduate diploma level at both the Nelson and Marlborough campuses. All business and IT programmes are taught by industryexperienced staff who are specialists in their fields.

Adventure Tourism
Studying ADVENTURE TOURISM is a great way for international students to experience New Zealand’s beautiful wilderness while gaining qualifications. There are three diverse national parks – Abel Tasman, Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi are close by. Students may select certificate or diploma options and specialise in hiking, rafting, river kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, sea kayaking or snowboarding.
Campus Life With around 5,000 students studying at NMIT each year, the Nelson and Marlborough Campuses are fun and vibrant places to be.
Student Centre The Student Centre at the Nelson Campus contains a large lounge and recreation centre with pool table, table tennis and music television. There is also a café offering a great range of food at reasonable prices. At the Marlborough Campus there is a student lounge with table tennis and café. Free DVDs and sporting equipment are also available to loan from the Student Support team.
Library Learning Centre The Library Learning Centre (LLC) on the Nelson Campus provides library services, computing, photocopying, audio-visual and study facilities to support the learning and research needs of NMIT students and staff. The collection consists of books, journals, electronic databases and audio-visual resources. The LLC has a range of study spaces available including two open access computer suites, a training seminar room, small study rooms and a computer cafe with extended hours access. Students studying at the Marlborough Campus or by distance, can access resources from the LLC. There is a learning hub, with a break out room and computer cafe as well as a small library on the Marlborough Campus.

Computers and Internet NMIT has several fully equipped computer centres with more than 300 computers for student use across the Nelson and Marlborough Campuses. All students have free and unlimited access to the Internet and their own email address. In 2011, NMIT launched its own wireless network, ‘nmifi’. With 80 wireless access points across the Nelson and Marlborough Campuses, students can use any laptop, internet-available cellphone, iPod touch or iPad to access the Internet.
Rata Room The Rata Room is NMIT’s training restaurant for cookery and hospitality students where students and members of the public can dine out on delicious and beautifully prepared lunches or dinners at a hugely discounted rate.
Hair and Beauty NMIT’s on-site hair and beauty salon offers student card-holders and members of the public the chance to experience a wide range of treatments at very low cost.

Off-Campus Counselling Services NMIT students have access to a free counselling service service provided by OCP, a professional company that offers the services of a team of independent counsellors and psychologists throughout New Zealand. First language support is available for international students. SANITI
IT Support
SANITI is your fun, friendly and independent Student Association; providing events and services to all NMIT students on all campuses. The team are located on the Nelson Campus and visit the Marlborough and Woodbourne Campuses regularly.
NMIT provides an IT help service for all students, provided in conjunction with our TANZ partners at Otago Polytechnic.Students can access advice and assistance regarding all the usual IT suspects such as logins, passwords and printing. The service also includes a facility to ‘take over’ any internet connected PC, onor off-campus, to help sort an issue out by ‘remote control.’

RECREATION Our sunny region is the perfect playground for lifestyle activities such as hiking or kayaking in Abel Tasman National Park, horseback riding, kitesurfing, biking or sailing. Nelson and Blenheim also offer a number of other fun and exciting entertainment options such as movies, concerts, art exhibitions, festivals, nightlife and great shopping. Outdoor fun In addition to the on-campus events provided by SANITI and NMIT, there are a number of other activities to enjoy on right your doorstep. You can try your hand at kitesurfing at beautiful Tahuna Beach; white water rafting on the Buller river; kayaking, jet-skiing and snorkelling in Abel Tasman National Park; swimming with dolphins in the Marlborough Sounds; hiking along the breath-taking Queen Charlotte Track; hunting in Nelson Lakes National Parks; skiing and snowboarding at the top of the Southern Alps; caving in Kahurangi National Park or mountain biking all over our picturesque region. For a more laid-back experience, why not grab a picnic and head over to Rabbit Island, a 13 km stretch of sand bordered by pine plantations only 20km from Nelson; visit one of the region’s many wineries; take a chartered boat trip along the coast and try a spot of fishing; or just head towards one of our many stunning beaches and sheltered coves.
City fun Both Nelson and Blenheim offer a huge range of activities for those that prefer a vibrant city environment. Not only are there hundreds of shops as well as award-winning cafés and restaurants for you to enjoy, but the popular weekend markets in Nelson and Blenheim are also well worth a visit for their inspiring range of arts, crafts, designer garments, locally-grown produce and artisan foods.
The Nelson-Marlborough region has a vibrant arts and crafts community and there are plenty of galleries around town where you can see work by glass-blowers, ceramic artists and more. Other year-round cultural experiences for you to enjoy include museums and several arts, music and film festivals. After our generous sun goes down, students can choose to head to the cinema to catch the latest blockbuster movie; pay a visit to the theatre; or hit the nightclubs and bars for some late-night action.

Accommodation NMIT Student Support Services can organise your accommodation in a homestay or in on-campus apartments. All you need to do is fill out the international student application form and pay a $250 accommodation placement fee. It is essential that you give us four weeks’ notice prior to your course commencement date.

2013 Programmes NMIT offers world-class qualifications from certificate and diploma levels through to degree and graduate diploma programmes. Internship Programme
NMIT has a number of partnerships with institutions around the world whose students come to NMIT for part of their study programme.
For many years, NMIT has organised unpaid internship placements in leading local businesses for overseas students and graduates. Interns have the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on international business experience, improve their English and gain a unique insight into ‘Kiwi’ culture.
Study Abroad students are integrated into regular classes with local and other international students and have the opportunity to study for one semester, a full academic year or, in some cases, individual course models. Credit transfer arrangements between NMIT and the student’s institution should be agreed prior to the student’s departure for New Zealand. Applicants to the NMIT’s Study Abroad programme must meet usual programme entry requirements. Study Abroad is available in a number of programme areas and fees are available on request. Please email international@nmit.ac.nz for more details.
NMIT interns must be studying a degree from a partner institution or hold a degree from a recognised institution and demonstrate an English language level of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. Applicants will be required to attend an interview and there are limited spaces available. The internship charge of NZ$1500 includes accommodation placement, orientation, access to activities and all NMIT services. Please email international@nmit.ac.nz for more details.

Helpful Advice Before you begin your studies at NMIT, there are some important things you need to know about life as a student in New Zealand.
Climate Nelson consistently has the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand. However, this doesn’t mean the weather is always perfect. Students should be prepared for wind, rain and cold weather, particularly in the winter, as well as sunny, warm days. Homes in New Zealand are sometimes not well insulated against the cold and we suggest students are prepared for this. Summer: December – February (Warm and dry – average 24oc) Autumn: March – May (Cool and dry – average 18oc) Winter: June – August (Cold and occasionally wet - average 10oc) Spring: September – November (Warm and occasionally wet – average 17oc)

Student visa If you are going to study in New Zealand for more than 12 weeks you will need to apply for a student visa. Full details of immigration requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available from Immigration New Zealand, and can be viewed on their website at immigration.govt.nz.
Eligibility for Health Services Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at moh.govt.nz.
Accident Insurance The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents, and temporary visitors to New Zealand but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at acc.co.nz.

Medical and Travel Insurance International students including groups of students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while in New Zealand. NMIT will automatically arrange insurance coverage for all students. Students can choose their own insurance company, however it must comply with the minimum standards required by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International students. If you arrange your own insurance cover, you must supply your Certificate of Insurance and Schedule of Cover, in English, to the Information and Enrolment Centre. Once the insurance policy is evaluated and confirmed as meeting the minimum standards required by the Code of Practice for Pastoral Care the policy taken out by NMIT on behalf of the student will be cancelled with the fees refunded to the student. A completed ‘Confirmation of Acceptance’ form received by NMIT is a contract from the student to pay the enrolment fees and charges due for the stated length of the study contract. Enrolment fees and charges must be paid in full before the start date of the programme, or by any earlier date as specified. Fees not paid by the due date may incur a Late Payment Charge. No student shall be enrolled unless all approved fees and charges have been paid to Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. Where payment is unable to be made in New Zealand dollars, US dollars will be accepted.
All refund applications should be in writing to the Information and Enrolment Centre Team Leader, with any supporting documentation as stipulated by the Information and Enrolment Centre Team Leader. Application for a refund in exceptional circumstances should be in writing to the Programme Area Leader. Refunds will be in NZ dollars minus any administration charges and bank fees and may be paid by cheque or bank draft to: > The student’s registered home address in their country of origin; or > The agent who referred the student; or > Another NZ education institution; or > The student’s bank account in New Zealand; or > The student.

Remember to include a copy of your passport, certified copies of your academic records, proof of English proficiency, details of any work experience and any additional information required for specific programme entry. Complete the accommodation requirements of the application form if you need assistance with your accommodation arrangements. A NZ$250 non-refundable accommodation placement charge applies. If you already have a professional qualification and previous work experience or other tertiary qualifications and would like to be granted credit exemptions to complete your study in shorter time, please enquire about this service at international@nmit.ac.nz when you apply.
