Intensive English courses for students with a variety of Academic goals.
All students studying for 4 weeks or more receive a detailed graduation report. This is an evaluation by your teacher of your exact level in all the main areas and recommends how you can continue to improve.
Canterbury College has a truly unique Intensive IELTS Programme designed by our Director of Studies, Keith Burgess. In 2007, Keith published Activating 1001 Academic Words for IELTS, a textbook that is the foundation of the programme.
FCE is an exam for people who can use everyday written and spoken English at an upper-intermediate level. It is an ideal exam for people who want to use English for work or study purposes.
General English classes:
The programme is perfect for students who want to challenge themselves and are really serious about their study.

Students may enter different morning and afternoon levels depending on their specific skills. For example, a student with strong grammar and vocabulary may study at intermediate level in the mornings and pre-intermediate in the afternoons.

Short Term Farming Training in New Zealand
This is a 4 week programme with General English plus a course aimed to teach international students Aromatherapy industry skills and knowledge which can be applied to worldwide standards.
NZ Certificate Level 2 This is a General English plus 2-week Barista course aimed to teach international students Barista industry skills and knowledge which can be applied to worldwide standards. The Barista Course is taught in the afternoons, with English in the mornings. Some of the coffees made are: - Short black - Long black - Cappuccino - Flat white - Latte - Mocha - Hot Chocolate - Macchiato - Americano
The aim of this programme is to teach international students industry skills and knowledge used by NZ farmers to increase farm production and efficiency. This programme also provides the possibility for the student learn English and improve communication skills. This will enable international students to work on a New Zealand farm before they return to their own country and apply the knowledge and skills gained for the benefit of their own country. This will be done by exposing the farming students to:

The certificate is delivered at NZQA level 2 and is made up entirely of unit standards. After completion, international students Benefits to the students: have the opportunity to: - Find a job at Coffee shops, Restaurants, Pubs and Bars and more
- Easy for students to find a job or volunteer work experience on farms around New Zealand and learn or improve English communication skills
- Qualify to work in the hospitality industry - Provides skills and knowledge in the agricultural and dairy industries
- Prepare for further study in hotel management - Study hospitality at diploma level more quickly and more confidently with background knowledge and hospitality industry experience
- Gain an understanding of how they can increase farm productivity and practical management skills - Build all round practical skills involved with farm machinery
The Practical Aromatherapy Course is in the afternoons. Study of General English to improve communication skills takes place in the mornings. Hands on learning experiences: - Produce blended oil - Make bath bombs - Make scented bath salts - Chop dried flowers for the infused oils - Produce skin toner - Produce skin soap - Produce deodorant room spray - Preparation of massage oil - Make moisturisers - Produce lip balm COURSE STRUCTURE - 4 weeks of part-time English with Aromatherapy - No minimum level of English required Student Comment: “Until the course started I only had an image about Aromatherapy in my mind. As the course progressed, I got to know more and more about the aromas I liked and what positive effects the oils can have. I could feel the positive and relaxing effects of the oils as I was making the products. Talking about Aromatherapy with the other students was really enjoyable too.”

Student Accommodation Homestay Living with a New Zealand family is a great way to improve your English and to get to know more about the New Zealand way of life.
Speed up your learning in homestay
We provide you with a full homestay accommodation service, and your host family is carefully chosen to meet your wishes concerning special food, hobbies and interests. On the day you arrive, your host family will meet you at Christchurch International Airport. This is a free service, and will make your first day in New Zealand easy and stress-free. You will be provided with breakfast and dinner Monday to Friday and three meals a day at the weekends. Your bedroom is private and is furnished with a study desk, heater and bedroom furniture. All homestay accommodation has been inspected by Canterbury College.
Good quality accommodation
We strongly recommend that you stay in Homestay accommodation for at least the first 3-4 months of your studies. This will give you a “turbo start" to learning to communicate in International English and will help your formal study. Renting an Apartment or Sharing a Flat
Choose “flatting for independence
Flatting is popular with long-term students. Costs of renting apartments vary. You can expect to pay rent from NZ$180 to NZ$450 per week depending on the location or renting a bedroom you can pay rent from NZ$100 to NZ$160 per week (usually including power, phone and Internet), depending on size and whether or not the apartment/house is furnished. When renting apartments you will have to pay a bond (usually 2-4 weeks’ rent in advance), power, phone, and any other amenities such as gas, internet connection and food.
