On a dark, clear night, you may be able to witness the world famous Aurora Australis – the Southern Lights. This magical atmospheric condition results when particles from the sun interact with the earth’s magnetic field. The resulting electric charge makes the gases in the atmosphere glow red, yellow and green. It’s a truly spectacular sight to see.

SIMPLY WORLD CLASS New Zealand’s world leading education system attracts tens of thousands of students from around the world every year. Choose SIT and gain a world class education in a world class environment Situated in the South Pacific, New Zealand is famous for its diverse and beautiful landscapes. While our land was made famous in the Lord of the Rings films, we’re also well known for our innovation: we’re clean, green and clever. Comprised of three major islands and over 30 others, New Zealand is a similar size to Great Britain, Japan or Colorado. With a population of just over four and a half million, you get a sense of space and freedom you find in few other places. A peaceful, safe and friendly country, New Zealand provides exciting lifestyle and adventure opportunities in a multicultural environment.

Land of the Long White Cloud The Māori name for New Zealand is Aotearoa which loosely translates as Land of the Long White Cloud. Legend has it that New Zealand was first discovered by navigators noticing a long white cloud on the horizon. Today, Aotearoa is commonly used, including in our national anthem which is sung in Māori before English.
Multicultural society New Zealand’s unique and dynamic culture reflects our multicultural heritage. New Zealand was the last major landmass to be settled by humans. Māori were the first to arrive, journeying in canoes from Hawaiki about 1000 years ago. Europeans later arrived, with the British mostly responsible for New Zealand’s European colonisation. Today, New Zealand is home to people from across the globe.

We love getting out and about in the outdoors – whether it be walking in national parks, skiing on lakes or mountaintops, or surfing at nearby beaches. We are also environmentally conscious, with a reputation for being clean and green. Not to mention clever!
