Carruth House - our boarding facility, is home to 80 boys and is situated on school grounds. It is within walking distance to doctors, chemist, shopping and sporting facilities. Year 13: Courses are mainly at Level 3 Achievement Standards and Unit Standards. Boys may also choose from Year 11 and 12 courses but must undertake study in a minimum of five Whangarei subjects at Level 3 or six subjects at Level 2 or a combination.
There is also a major emphasis on Outdoor Education centred round a campus programme. There is a senior ski trip every year and a week-long camp for selected Year 10 students at the Outdoor Pursuits Centre near Tongariro National Park.

Other ensembles include chamber music groups, rock bands and guitar ensembles. The Smokefree Rockquest is an annual event with as many as six student-led bands entering the competition.

House (or Whanau) System On arrival at Whangarei Boys’ High School, each boy is assigned to a Whanau group. All boarders are assigned to Carruth Whanau (along with some day boys). A very hotly contested Inter-Whanau competition takes place throughout a very busy year. Swimming, Athletics, Basketball, Indoor Hockey, 7-a-side Rugby, Cross-country, Music, Speeches, Singing, Tennis and Academic endeavour all contribute points. Whangarei Boys’ High School takes pride in its ability to provide a host of activities for its young men, with all boys being actively encouraged to participate. There is top-class professional tuition available in all activities.
