Here at TRI- we want to inspire and motivate the modern woman. We look at elements of the past, present and future to bring an eclectic combination of art, print, illustration and creative and historial writing to create a lasting effect on the TRI- woman.

TRI- wants to thank the contributions of local and upcoming artists for colloborating for this issue. Robert Mitchell for Printwork and Fran Rippon and Joseph Wager for illustrations used in Part One and Three.

As a young girl you would never want to get old. You would pray not to turn out like your grandma or even worse - your mother! You’d be hoping to God that you wouldn’t become senile and start confusing your daughter for a long lost friend and spiralling into an anecdote that no one will ever care about or you’ll be walking home down the street and forgetting your own address.

There seems to be such a lack of sympathy and patience for the older generation. Why is this? At the end of the day it happens to everyone. Do we not realise that human life is a cycle, in which we will one day become them; we will echo them in style and grace, in gestures and mannerisms.

Who is the mature woman? Is it this preconceived thought we have in our heads which has built up already? The vision of that frail ageing woman, with wild, witchy hair losing all its pigmentation; with skin that resembles the texture of a leather couch? Or the ideal of the glamorous women that we witness on our television screens; the classic Hollywood beauty that will always be timeless and aspirational to us mere mortals.

In a world that’s predominately seen as ran by the male species, women have fought long and hard for the chance to be seen as a competitor in the race for success.

We all know that as a species we’ve always been brilliant. We have raised children and homes, been mothers and loyal wives. We’ve been writers, actors and poets. Sometimes we’ve had to cloak ourselves just to get noticed but it was still our work. We’ve worked for the vote and the chance to campaign- we got our freedom of speech. When the men were absent we helped stabilize our countries.

We made artillery, we looked after the land and fed the country. We were the breadwinners:- Land Girls. We were the males; we kept our communities thriving.

In music, movies and fashion, people aspire to be us, we are in their lives- we have been icons and still are today. First prime minsters, first supermodels, first activists

and first fashion forgers. We did this. We can learn a hell of a lot from the women of the past, moulding our path for today..

So, what is wrong in growing old- we are still women? We can still be prominent, powerful and prodigious, whatever age.

With stray steel hairs and crumpling casing we can still be significant - in our professional or personal life. We will all have something to move the rest of female world. It’s only naturWWal that we look back to the past to help aid our future. These icons have aged or even deceased but they are still significant, our lives we are living will help future women, our experiences will be our livelihood.

‘What do you want to be when you’re older?’ they would ask and in response I’d say ‘I don’t know and I haven’t the faintest idea- I’ve not even finished school yet!’ My brain wanders off into a frenzy of rushed thoughts. All I knew at that point in time was that I want to be anything, everything and something. But actually, all in all I didn’t want to grow up.

the right social group. I’d always be filled with envy when glancing at the smarter girls;- how do they do that? Are we really supposed to think and start planning at this age? Do I really need to bother about whether or not I will get the right job, equal rights, perfect partner or success? I was always struck with this. Hoping these components just fit effortlessly around me.

That’s just me though. I look back on my childhood and felt that my brain was cluttered with useless thoughts and ideas that will never help me. The most important thoughts that would run through my head daily were the ones questioning whether boy X or boy Y liked me, whether I looked pretty or whether I slotted into

I see countless girls today forging their path at such an early age, making me want to go back 10 years and kick myself into gear. They should feel so lucky to the many significant role models they have today, maybe I had them when I was younger, I mean we had Spice Girls teaching us girl power with Destinys

Child and TLC telling us not to accept a ‘scrub’ into our lives. I was aware of this but I was just too wrapped up in my own life, either that or quite frankly I had no interest. This is the thing; are most girls interested in this or are we more bothered about the whirlwind of the celebrity- watching the most outrageous new music video with half naked girls rolling around and twerking, or which actress has had the most shocking surgery or the latest lovers tiff in ‘La La’ Land.

I say this from my own perspective, completely forgetting that there probably is a percentage of girls hoping to influence and create change for all the girls in the future.

Surely though, these girls can’t know what ‘Feminism’ is? I mean I don’t have a full understanding of its meaning. Is it just what they have been told by a parent or an older figure or maybe even something we have seen or heard. I’m guessing half of them aren’t old enough to have these perfect components already in place, and I haven’t either. So how can these girls possibly understand all the fuss?

Well I don’t know, but they seem to have grasped this concept and are urging people to create some form of change.

“Feminism by definition is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of political, economic and social equality of

the sexes.” Okay, so this is what we are told but what actually is it? To me that’s just a bunch of words- but something seems to be working. Current role models from the likes of Emma Watson and Lena Dunham are recreating the term of the word ‘actress’ and are wanting to make a difference and it seems to be affecting our millennial society. Refreshing. At the end of the day, who else is going to help us out in a world that is constantly changing and evolving. This effect is trickling down slowly but steadily to these girls- and it’s proving to work. They have such a strong goal of what they want and how they want people to perceive them, it’s definitely a trait that had rubbed off on me. So, beside from the celebrity figures

I see how is this change happening? The F word is getting heard- and we love it.

Younger female politicians, writers and activists are fighting our corner, so long are the days of decisions being made for us by these stiff old men that know nothingits an end of the era to the ‘mans world.’

At my age now I have decided. I am going to be the evolving modern woman.

It’s true I might not know all the correct meanings and I might not have my life set in place, my goals may be confused but what I’m sure is; I want to be something, I want be like them. I mean shouldn’t we all? Welcome to the new world.
