THE SOUND ALTER NATIVE As we once again wrap up another amazing year for KJHK, it is important to reflect and showcase the people who make it all possible. KJHK’s staffers are incredibly talented as they are dedicated to the station. With all the ups and downs the year of 2020 has presented, our staffers continue to be the same goofy, creative, and loving people that make KJHK the best place on earth. Period!

JUSTIN’S MUSICAL RECIPE BOOK BY JUSTIN RODERMAN

FOOD AND MUSIC? They aren’t too different. Both have the extraordinary potential to manipulate our emotions - to give us the highest of highs (and the lowest of lows, but we won’t worry about that today). And, much like food, it is best enjoyed when combined with other complementary flavors. That is why I have created these five music combinations recipes, if you will - that complement each other nicely and lead to a wholly new listening experience. If nothing else, you may find some new artists to check out or potentially some new genres you never thought to give a try. So without further ado, I present to you: Justin’s Musical Recipe Book!

GROOVIN’ AND JAMMIN’ INGREDIENTS: --Talk to the Moon - Ripe --If You Feel (The Way I Do) - Reliably Bad --Do You Wanna Do Nothing with Me? - Lawrence Do you ever pop some music on while working and suddenly find yourself subconsciously swaying with the rhythm? If not, prepare to feel the beat with this dish. Talk to the Moon starts you up fast with an energetic tempo and funky horn lines, which lead into the more chill, subtle notes of If You Feel (The Way I Do). Wrap it all up with the amazing band Lawrence and their most popular song Do You Wanna Do Nothing with Me? Good luck not feeling the sudden urge to jump out of your seat and jam with this trio of songs.

ON THAT BACK BEAT INGREDIENTS: --She Got Your Love - Sam Burchfield --Untie My Shoelaces-Arleigh Kincheloe, Sister Sparrow --If It Ain’t Broke - Sonny Cleveland The best way to experience this dish is to lean the seat back and close your eyes. The star of the show here is Untie My Shoelaces, with its aggressively laid back tone and steady back beat that simultaneously makes you want to get up and dance and sit back and bob your head. It’s flanked on either side by She Got Your Love, another laid back but rocking tune with a fantastic funk feel and killer brass section, and If It Ain’t Broke, a relaxed tune with a strong R&B influence.

WHERE THE GRASS IS BLUER INGREDIENTS: --Take Me Home - Free the Honey --Brighter Every Day -Trout Steak Revival --Just Like Heaven - The Infamous Stringdusters It’s a sad fact that many people don’t know about the bluegrass genre or don’t want to give it a chance. Well, here’s your opportunity. Bluegrass is known for its upbeat and energetic tempo, as well as its soaring fiddle solos intermixed with choral melodies and racing banjo-pickin’. This group of songs delivers these things in spades. Go outside, clear your mind, and make sure you’ve got plenty of space to dance whilst enjoying this dish.

THE “KJHK DOES NOT CONDONE CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES” INGREDIENTS: --Outlaw State of Mind - Chris Stapleton --Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde - Travis Tritt --It Ain’t My Fault - Brothers Osborne For years, country music has been linked with cowboys and outlaws, so much so that it spawned its own sub-genre: Outlaw Country. This collection of tunes fittingly starts off with Outlaw State of Mind, a sweeping and cinematic journey that starts calm and steady and slowly builds to a killer (if a bit long) guitar solo. Followed by Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde, Travis Tritt combines the older classic country feel with hard rock influences, and the dish ends with the hard-hitting and head-banging It Ain’t My Fault. Hit the road, roll down the windows, and crank up that radio with this dish.

AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE OTHERS INGREDIENTS: --Don’t Wanna Dance - The Ballroom Thieves --Future People - Sound & Color --When The Tequila Runs Out - Dawes This mix can sort of be thought of as a grab bag of some of my favorite alternative songs. Don’t Wanna Dance starts us off in familiar territory with floaty melodies that sway from side to side, and the best part is the chorus which, ironically, will really make you want to dance. Future People takes us a little further into alternative territory (as Alabama Shakes frequently does) with their hard-hitting Future People. This song’s rock and electronic feel leads perfectly into When The Tequila Runs Out, whose hypnotic electric tone is a welcome departure from Dawes’s typical style and wraps up this dish nicely. I WOKE UP RELUCTANTLY TODAY. Can’t seem to feel rested anymore. I’m sure it would feel the same had it been any other Sunday before Stop Week, but then it might be because I went out with my KJHK friends the night before. Maybe I would’ve grabbed a latte from Barker with Feng this morning, and we would’ve worked on our English final together. And I would’ve flirted with the cute barista. I know it’s no good to think of what could’ve been because it can’t be -- and after crying away all of Friday night over it, I feel better -- but with finals week and graduation approaching, and the paralyzing realization that this is all I get, I can’t help but mourn. A year ago, The 1975 concert in Austin was rained out. We couldn’t attend the make-up show, and then our KC show almost got canceled due to weather too. Ironically all that mess was simply the calm before the figurative storm. The best part of my senior year -- the most memorable months of my life probably -- has been, well, rained out. Even hanging out with my friends before we all leave is heavily restricted mostly by our own consciences. And I would never want to put anyone in danger, but it breaks my heart. My whole college experience has been all about pushing my limits. Breaking out of who I thought I was and becoming a person I can admire. I think I’ve done a lot of good work there: going abroad as a sophomore, joining Writerly Friends, going abroad again, the Journal. And I love all the relationships I’ve cultivated along the way. I’m not ready to leave them behind like this or leave them to the near certain fate of “Keep in touch!” I want these loves and these memories forever. And it feels so cruel that after all this “breaking out” and “pushing limits”, I’m confined to basically two rooms. This doesn’t negate all my work I know, but it feels so hard to maintain, to continue to grow. And god my heart hurts for all the time together we’ve lost.

Graduation has never been about the date. It’s about me, of course, and all the people I’ve loved who have helped me grow and to whom, hopefully, I returned the favor. For the moment, I don’t get either, and according to my own geo-chronological beliefs, no matter how awesome and meaningful and amazing the later date with a lot my friends will certainly be, it will feel different. Noticeably different. Tangibly. But I am grateful there is a chance. I’m unspeakably grateful for everything that I have been so lucky to have gotten up to this moment. Lemme tie up a few knots from last year: of course it didn’t work out with that guy. It didn’t last very long at all. Europe was awesome and beautiful and freeing. I met a few other guys, didn’t stick with them very long either. I’ve had one of the best years of my life; traveling Europe with my sister, making new friends, (self-)publishing my first poetry chapbook, writing two Honors theses, and participating in several student organizations. I became an Editor-in-Chief and a radio co-host. I drank margaritas with my co-workers and my poetry classmates. My last Stop Day Eve was a bildungsroman, but I wanted another one. Just one more. One more night with my friends, running through campus at one a.m., screaming “We did it! We did it!” And I hope we get it. Even though it isn’t ending the way we thought it would, it was still special. And it was overcoming overwhelming adversity like this that made me believe I could do anything. I still believe I can do anything. It just might take a little longer than I had planned.

MAGIC FOR A BETTER LIFE:

BY ANITA PATEL STEPS FOR A BETTER DAY: Wake up and stir honey into a loved one’s tea. Wear your favorite earrings and something silly to work, like Looney Tune’s socks or tie-dyed shoelaces. Say hello, how do you do? To every new person you meet. If you want to fall in love, place a lilac flower behind your left ear, not your right. Collect a flower for every person you miss; decide whether or not to give them away. Above all, count thirteen blessings of the day. When you get to the last one, do a little happy dance..

COURAGE TEA: Brew chai with an outfit on that you’ve been nervous to wear (you know the one you slip on at midnight and snapchat to only your close friends? Yeah, that one). When the chai is bubbling, grate ginger skin to start a fire within you. Strain and pour the tea in glass cups—but be careful when holding them. Courage does not mean recklessness. Drink the chai with someone you are afraid of. Right before taking a sip, whisper something you have always been too scared to say out loud.

HOW TO LET A LOVER GO: On a full-moon night, sit near a lake with whomever you love. Kiss them. Hard. Place only the water that reflects the moon in the palms of their hands, and fold their fingers over it slowly. Notice how their eyes look in this light. When they go to clasp your hands, their fingers wet and cold, questioning what you have been doing, hold onto them tight one last time. Let go.

STUDENTS WEIGH IN:

BY GRAHAM BISHOP cataclysmic events. Art history major Molly Hatesohl, who recalls the Day, ardently disagrees with the idea that Seinfeld should be released.

MANY STUDENTS attend classes in Budig Hall during their time at KU, but even those who have never stepped foot in the building are aware of its status as a prison that holds renowned actor, director and comedian Jerry Seinfeld deep underground. Recently, KU students have been abuzz on Twitter debating the ethical repercussions of keeping the Emmy award-winning writer sealed in perpetuity. “How can people support Jerry Seinfeld being locked under Budig and also support bees?” said senior Fengxue Zhang, who has been spearheading the #FreeTheBee movement.

“CONTAIN AND CONTROL,” SHE SAID. “HE MUST SUFFER.” Still, others believe that Seinfeld’s sentence is not KU’s to uphold. “Look, I understand that Seinfeld should under no circumstances be allowed to roam free,” said Texas-native Justin Roderman. “But I don’t see how it’s our problem. Send him to Mizzou for all I care!”

“THEY’RE JUST HYPOCRITES.”

While many students debate over the ethicality of Seinfeld’s imprisonment, English major and Navy veteran Pat Richardson believes the issue to be one of national security.

Authorities made the decision to bind Seinfeld on the campus over 12 years ago, following certain

“I know that we can all sit here and dream up pipe dreams of, like, future utopias where we

don’t have to put Jerry cellar, but importantly, come to an end,” said Ri what it takes, then yeah,

SEMIOTICS OF QUARANTINE

BY MOLLY HATESOHL I started walking through campus at night, no earlier than 9:00 pm. This way, instead of crossing paths with others, you start to notice the paths themselves. You start to notice the traces of human action, rather than the agents of human action. And instead of noticing the visible absence of things, you start to notice their invisible presence. You cannot see the barred owl perched above you, but you can hear its distinctive call, an index of its being. A concrete fountain has been drained and is missing a large chunk. The shards of brown glass inside its well signify not just the beer bottle that caused the damage, but also the arm that threw it and the despondency behind the choice to destroy something nice. The five burgeoning garbage bins signify not just the lives of those who have not yet moved out of student housing, but also the waste collectors whose job it would normally be to consolidate this garbage, as well as the unprecedented reasons why they have not yet done so. All this trash at the top of an impossibly lush, impeccably manicured hill of grass that is the deepest shade of green you have ever seen. Someone is still mowing this lawn. I had a dream I had this app that detected bird calls around me, identified them, and sent me a notification. The push notification read, “Bird Call Detected: Possible N-----M-----.”

I don’t think my subconscious ever came up with an actual bird name, it looked the way all text does in dreams, not actually legible but you can intuit the content because it’s all from inside your own head anyway. A shortcut to the signified without its signifiers. I just remember a feeling of immense satisfaction in finally knowing the name of the bird whose call I’ve been hearing in my real, waking life, this five-time repetition of a descending pattern of eighth notes. I can’t think of a way to write it out, I’m not even sure if I could really hear it in my dream or if it was like the dream text, not actually perceived through one of the five senses but conceived via thought, neural pathways randomly firing, generating a totally fictional sequence of tones that my sleeping brain mistakenly labeled as birdsong. Then again I was sleeping next to an open window, and in the early spring, birds begin their calls around 4:00 am.
