How You Can Help Protect Wild Birds in Your Yard (StatePoint) You may not think about it often, but wild birds use your lawn as a rest stop and place to call home. As you spruce up your lawn and garden for the season, there are simple steps you can take to protect them and help them thrive. According to Spencer Schock, founder of WindowAlert, makers of bird-friendly products for homes, the following changes are easy to implement in order to create a safe harbor for wild birds: • Plant native species: Planting native species on your property is one of the most impactful ways you can improve your local environment, as well as make your lawn and garden a healthy habitat for wild birds and other fauna. Native plant species provide birds with food and places to rest and nest. Birds in turn, spread pollen and seeds, while acting as a natural pesticide. Speaking of which, gardening organically will also go a long way to protecting the health and safety of feeding birds. • Make windows visible: Up to 1 billion birds die annually from striking windows in US, according to the American Bird Conservancy. The good news is that it’s relatively easy and affordable to prevent your home from being part of the problem. Special window decals that reflect ultraviolet sunlight, a wavelength of light noticeable to birds, have been proven to substantially reduce the likelihood of bird strikes. Giving the appearance of slightly frosted translucent glass but glowing like a stoplight for birds, those from WindowAlert feature a range of decorative patterns. To boost protection for birds, you can also apply a high-tech liquid called WindowAlert UV Liquid in between decals. More information, as well as useful application tips, can be found by visiting windowalert.com. • Monitor cats: Monitor your cat’s time outdoors to ensure they are not terrorizing or hunting birds. An enclosed play area for your cat is the most effective way to keep birds in your yard safe from your furry companion’s natural instincts. Good deeds start at home. This season, do your part to help migrating bird populations reach their destinations safely.

April 2020 The Liberty Leader Newspaper Tips to Weather Seasonal Joint Pain
EARTH VISIONS
(StatePoint) Do April showers bring May flowers or just a lot of aches and pains? While research on how weather affects a person’s pain levels is inconclusive, many people swear that the pain in their joints or ache “in their bones” can predict rainy or chilly weather ahead. The general theory is that this is caused by changes in temperature and barometric pressure. “Sometimes joint pain can occur in flares that your body can predict: a change of weather in a usually dry climate, a change of temperature or staying in contact with water for too long,” says Dr. Ken Redcross, author of “Bond: The 4 Cornerstones of a Lasting and Caring Relationship with Your Doctor” and founder of Redcross Concierge. “Particularly as we age, pain tends to sneak in, so managing it is a useful skill to acquire. However, it’s not just about taking a pill to numb the pain and hoping for as few side effects as possible.” If a chill in the air or damp, humid temps bring you discomfort, Dr. Redcross recommends the following simple measures, which may help you find relief:

• Keep Moving: Inclement weather can keep us sedentary. When you reduce your movement or don’t get out as much, pain can increase. Don’t let potential aches and pains stop you from regular activity. The sooner you start moving, the better you will feel.

• Know Your Limits: Don’t increase the intensity of physical activity too quickly, especially if you have existing cardiovascular, joint or muscle problems that could be aggravated as a result. Work with a licensed trainer at first, who can assess your strength, flexibility, balance and endurance, and create a custom workout program accordingly. • Relieve Pain Naturally: The next time you experience pain, avoid popping a conventional pain reliever. Arnica montana, a type of mountain daisy, has been used for centuries for natural pain relief and is one of the most popular homeopathic medicines worldwide. As a first-line therapy, consider using an unscented, non-greasy topical treatment like Boiron Arnicare Gel for muscle pain, stiffness and swelling from injuries and bruises. More information can be found at Arnicare.com. Claims for Arnicare are based on traditional homeopathic practice, not accepted medical evidence. They are not FDA evaluated. • Spice it Up: Turmeric, ginger and cayenne pepper all have anti-inflammatory properties, as well as many other health benefits. Stick to an energy-boosting diet by giving your foods a low-calorie kick with spices, roots and herbs. Don’t let the weather get the best of you this spring. With a few key strategies, you can better manage weather-related joint pain, rain or shine.

Journey to the top of the world! A real-life story of Summit Day to Kala Patthar, the viewing point for Mt Everest and the base camp. Things do not go exactly as planned! Part 2 of 2 Sherpa honor the natural laws, foremost those of the mountain. Sherpa know that the mountain keeps those who come unprepared. What had I missed? The Sherpa sees the unmistakable sign and responds with the necessary action, swift and sure. The scree, millions of tiny loose pebbles, on the trail is as slippery as ice, and I feel panic as my legs do not seem to be attached to my body. In fact, my body does not seem to be attached to my brain at all. Everything begins to blur and slur. I lose all track of space, time and sensory perception. I am numb, blind, deaf and mute. He takes my 130 pound frame onto his back and runs full speed down the mountain trail that had taken hours for me, while edging slowly upward. He runs all out, knowing that there is one remedy for the situation. He runs, hoping to wrest this one from the grasp of the mountain. A big jolt shocks me ‘awake’, and I see a boulder field, my chin resting on the shoulder of someone, whose head bumps constantly with mine. “I should be petrified, leaping over those boulders”, I thought. Then numb again and dark. Then…a spark of light, two tiny purple petals whisper within my swelling brain, "Just BE, just BE, just BE".
connection to my human family, through the tracks, the tracks that I followed to that very mountain. Yes, I am worthy because of all the others, all of us together as one, sometimes the giver and sometimes the receiver of Grace, the glue that binds us. Yes, I have allowed these ones to give of themselves in service to my need, fulfilling their own in the process. A Nepalese voice pierces the darkness. Startled awake, I answer, “Uh-huh, yes, ok”. The voice has come to make sure that I am able to be awakened, that indeed I was still alive. Oh yes, I have been shaken awake by this event. This voice exhibits, once again, the abiding love of mankind for mankind. Tears of realization and appreciation fill my eyes. As I fade toward peaceful sleep, the two tiny purple petals have a message for me. “See all that has been done for me in support of my life?” she asks. “I have neither demanded nor resisted the care offered me. What I require of myself in response is to beam the light of beauty to all who happen to become aware of it; and to choose grace in accepting the vulnerability that allows others to show their own beauty in service to me.” Suddenly, I know why I was led to this very place and time. Propelled here, helplessly pulled and called to the mountain, where the scene has been set for centuries in preparation for this event. Here is where the lesson of life, perhaps the only lesson of life that I came to this world to learn, has been delivered, in Love. Contact Bits’n’Pieces at bitsnpiecesliberty@gmail.com. Please send in your own Poems and stories, either those you have written or some that you enjoy! Let’s do this Liberty.
Weaving in and out of consciousness, seemingly suspended on two stem-like legs of human hair; I find myself walking beside a very nice man, who will not let me stop to rest. We walk for what seems like days, and each time I wake, he is there, ever patient and smiling, with my arm under his, walking. I finally am allowed to sit and rest. We have come down in altitude four thousand feet, which has taken us miles of threading through the foot paths and yak trails. Now I can finally eat, and popcorn is again served with the meal, because “Americans LOVE popcorn and have it at every meal”, I think with an inner giggle. I am shy and quiet, not quite normal, confused and embarrassed that I have no idea of what just happened. Gratefully, sleep now can come tonight. I am totally reduced to a tiny, fragile thing. What had happened to me had killed many in the past. My brain had begun to swell from the high altitude of the mountain. As it crushed against the inside of my skull, only time and the ‘run down the mountain’ could reverse this action in this far-away, outdoor environment, with no other help available. Being lower on the mountain had been enough to reverse the swelling, and I was alive to tell about this trip of a lifetime, instead of being another death at Mt. Everest. As that day’s events settle into my now more-coherent brain, I am gripped by my unworthiness to have received these selfless acts of heartfelt love. Me? Why would they have gifted me so, and saved my life? I felt unable to receive these acts of kindness. Then I thought of my

After you have finished your automotive repair project, soak your dirty tools in Dawn before you put them away to remove all the oil and grime. Dawn also helps prevent rust from forming on the tools.
Wow Who Knew???? You will want to pass this one on to your friends and doing so will save it on your timeline for later use! Your welcome! ORIGINAL BLUE DAWN . . . IT’S NOT JUST FOR DISHES ANYMORE Wild Life Ever wonder why Dawn Dishwashing Liquid is the wildlife cleaner of choice after an oil spill? According to the International Bird Rescue Research Center, Dawn effectively removes grease but does not cause harm to the skin of the birds. It’s also biodegradable and contains no phosphates. BUBBLES According to Bubbles.org, Dawn dishwashing liquid makes great homemade bubbles. Here is the Giant Bubble Recipe used in bubble makers at many children’s museums: 1/2 cup Ultra Dawn 1/2 gallon warm water 1 tablespoon glycerin (available at any drug store) OR White Karo syrup works too! Stir gently. Skim the foam off the top of the solution (too much foam breaks down the bubbles). Dip bubble wand and get ready for some good, clean fun! GREASY HAIR PROBLEMS Kids get into the darnedest things! Like Vaseline and baby oil rubbed into their hair! Dawn is mild enough to use on their hair and strong enough to remove the most stubborn grease.
ICE PACK Partially fill a strong zip-type sandwich bag with Dawn dishwashing liquid, close and freeze. The liquid soap stays cold much longer and it can be refrozen many times. It will conform to the place you need an ice pack. TUB AND SHOWER CLEANER Take a spray bottle and fill it halfway with white vinegar. Heat in the microwave. Fill the rest of the way with blue Dawn. Put lid on and shake to mix well. Spray on your tub and shower walls. Allow to sit for a few minutes and rinse away. It will totally melt all the gunk, slime, sludge and other stuff that builds up including a bathtub ring. REPEL ANTS Spray counter-tops, cupboards and any other area where you see ants with a solution of Dawn and water. Wipe dry. The slight residue of Dawn that remains will not be a problem at all for kids or pets, but ants hate it. Should you see a trail of ants, go ahead and hit them with the Dawn spray. STRIPPING CLOTH DIAPERS Add a squirt or two of original Dawn dish soap to your washer and run a hot wash, then rinse until there are no more bubbles. Dawn is a degreasing agent and helps stripping by removing oily residue. Be sure to rinse, rinse, rinse until the water runs clear.
HAIR PRODUCT BUILDUP Once a month use original Dawn as you would shampoo. It will remove excess oil from your hair and scalp and strip away any build-up of styling products without any damage. Perform this once a month and you won’t have to buy expensive salon products that do the same thing. MANICURE SECRET Soak fingers in full-strength blue Dawn. It makes the cuticles soft and easy to work with. And it removes the natural oil from the fingernails, which allows the polish to adhere very well. REPEL HOUSEPLANT INSECTS A safe, effective way to repel insects from your houseplants, including aphids, spider mites and mealy bugs. Put a drop of Dawn Dishwashing Liquid in a spray bottle, fill the rest of the bottle with water, shake well, and mist your household plants with the soapy water. CLEAN YOUR WINDOWS Try this recipe from Merry Maids: mix 3 drops Dawn in 1 gallon water and fill a spray bottle with the solution. Spritz and wipe as you would with any window cleaner. PETS AND PESTS Use it to bathe the dogs. It kills fleas on contact and is much cheaper than expensive dogshampoos. CLEAN AUTOMOTIVE TOOLS

UNCLOGGING TOILETS A cup of Dawn detergent poured into a clogged toilet allowed to sit for 15 minutes and then followed with a bucket of hot water poured from waist height will clear out the toilet.
For oil-based stains such as lipstick, grease, butter, motor oil, cooking oil, and some pen inks, simply apply some Dawn dishwashing liquid directly to the stain and scrub with a small brush or toothbrush until the oil is removed, and then launder as usual.
POISON IVY Poison ivy spreads through the spread of the oil within the blisters. Washing the affected area with Dawn, especially on children who keep scratching the blister’s open, helps dry up the fluid, AND keep it from spreading.
NON-TOXIC LUBRICANT Sliding glass doors, door knobs, hinges etc. It lasts much longer than any aerosol type spray that I have tried. And Its non-toxic! It does a great job of cleaning the parts that its lubricating as well!
DRIVEWAY CLEANER If you have gasoline or motor oil stains on your driveway, you can use the kitty litter method to clean up the excess oil and then use a scrub broom and a solution of biodegradable Dawn dishwashing detergent and warm water to safely and effectively remove excess motor oil from the pavement. OILY SKIN Dawn makes a great facial cleanser for oily skin. A drop or two combined with warm water will do the trick. PAINT OR GREASE REMOVER FOR HANDS Dawn combined with corn oil makes for the perfect paint or grease remover. Simply combine a little bit of both in your hands then rub it over affected areas. The corn oil and the dishwashing liquid both help to dissolve the grease and paint – yet leave skin soft, unlike harsher paint removers. CLEANING THE KIDDIE POOL Plastic wading pools can get very gunky, very fast. Dump the water, then scrub the pool with Dawn and a sponge. More potent cleaners like bleach will weaken and dry out the plastic in the sun. MULTIPURPOSE CLEANER Merry Maids recommends using a drop of Dawn in water to clean ceramic tile and no-wax/linoleum floors. You can also use the spray on: • Bathroom and kitchen counters and sinks. • Woodwork, e.g., baseboards, shelves, and wainscoting. (Dry as you go– wood doesn’t like prolonged contact with water.) • Tubs and toilet seats.
SIDEWALK DE-ICER For icy steps and sidewalks in freezing temperatures, mix 1 teaspoon of Dawn dishwashing liquid, 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, and 1/2 gallon hot/warm water and pour over walkways. They won’t refreeze. No more salt eating at the concrete in your sidewalks POOL CLEANING Squirt Dawn down the middle of the pool and all of the dirt, suntan lotion, etc. will move to the edges of the pool for easy clean up! AND it makes the pools sparkle. EYEGLASS DEFOGGER Simply rub a small drop of Dawn on eyeglass lenses, and wipe clean. It will leave a very thin film that will prevent them from fogging up. SHOWER FLOORS Cover greasy footprints on shower floors with a coating of Dawn; let sit overnight. Scrub away the gunk in the morning with a stiff brush. APHID CONTROL ON FRUIT TREES Mix two tablespoons Dawn to a gallon of water and put in your sprayer. Try to get spray both sides of the leaves, branches and the tree trunks. Let sit for about 15 minutes and then rinse the trees THOROUGHLY! AND FINALLY…….. Here’s a brilliant idea! Need a hostess gift when visiting friends and family this summer? Print off this post and include it with a bottle of Blue Dawn! Talk about USEFUL !

Fun Rainy Day Tips for Families (StatePoint) On rainy days, it can be tempting to hand children devices and let them fall down a YouTube rabbit hole. After all, there can be a lot of hours to fill when the weather isn’t cooperating with your weekend plans. There are better ways to spend those rainy days. With a little creativity, rainy days can be opportunities for fun and educational play. Consider these great ideas from The Genius of Play, an initiative with a mission of raising awareness about the importance of play in order to help parents make it a critical part of raising kids. • Get messy: Just because you’re indoors, doesn’t mean there isn’t an opportunity for kids to satisfy their primal urge to get their hands dirty. Not only do kids love playing with sensory textures such as paints, slime, sand, play dirt and foam, doing so helps improve fine motor skills. The good news? Many such items are now designed to reduce messiness, stickiness and clean up hassles. • Play games: Break out some classic board games like checkers and dominoes or grab a deck of cards for a round of crazy eights. Such games teach the importance of taking turns and good sportsmanship and can even help kids learn to strategize and plan ahead. • Get dramatic: For an afternoon of open-ended playtime, encourage kids to develop their emotional, creative and communication skills by developing their own skit or play. With so many dress-up kits available, it’s easy to maintain a well-stocked costume trunk that kids can use to get inspired. You can also gather up some of their favorite toys to use as props and help bring stories to life. • Build together: Whether your child prefers following step-by-step instructions or using their imagination, designing, creating and playing with construction toys can build problem-solving, spatial and fine motor skills. • Design an obstacle course: Rain or no rain, kids have energy to burn. Building a safe obstacle course for kids to complete is a fun way for them to stay active indoors while building core muscles and developing balance. Pick three to five exercises, like pretending to jump like a frog, army crawling under the table or log rolling from one side of the living room to another and then doing five sit-ups. Practice it for 5-10 minutes, then get to work designing a new one! • Create a mini lab: Play with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) toys and games. Use a science kit to erupt a volcano or code a robot to guard the bedroom. These important educational experiences can be fun supplements to classroom learning that help set your child up for future success. • Make cleanup fun: It may not sound like “play” at first glance, but cleanup can be fun with the right attitude. Crank up favorite tunes and have kids dance as they dust, straighten, put toys away, make the bed and help with chores. Or, make a game of it, racing each other to complete tasks. For more play tips and inspiration, visit www.thegeniusofplay.org. Be sure rainy days include playtime, which offers many developmental benefits for children to learn key communication, creative, cognitive, social, emotional and physical skills.
