Letter From R. Andrew Sykes DDS Dear Patients, It is with a mixture of sadness and anticipation that I announce the closing of my dental practice upon my retirement on May 28, 2021. I have had the pleasure of practicing dentistry in this community for the last 46 years, but I have chosen to bring my practice to a close to spend more time with my family. I am fortunate to have practiced dentistry in a community that has supported my efforts so greatly. Your friendship and support of not only my dental practice but my family has been such a blessing. We cannot thank each of you enough for making us welcomed and standing by us in our daily lives. It has been my honor to be your dentist and a part of Liberty. If you would like a copy of your dental records please call the office at 336-622-2953 by May 28th and let us know if you would like them mailed to your address. Please give us 2-3 business days if you choose to pick up the records in person. If you would like a recommendation for a new dentist please do not hesitate to contact me or Janice at the office phone number. We have many great Dentist in our area that will be glad to continue your dental care. Again, thank you for helping make Liberty our home over the past 46 years and with your friendship and support making it a great place to live and work. Sincerely, Dr Andy Sykes.

Tower Gardening in the Spring The love of gardening is a seed once sown that never dies. This quote by Gertrude Jekyll resonates with me because I have always had a love for growing and even though I have not always been successful, I have kept trying and continue to do so. With gardening, the love and learning continues. I grew up enjoying flowers in the yard of my childhood home and at the homes of my grandparents. I also grew up helping my father with a little garden plot in the backyard of our home. Fast forward to my own home and my own family and I was still nurturing that love of gardening by planting flowers, simple landscaping projects, and our own garden plots to help feed our family. Between busyness and poor growing conditions, it was a struggle to keep producing crops in our yard. To make up for what we could not grow on our own, we purchased our fruits and vegetables from farmers in our area and the local markets when I could. This still didn’t meet the need of my love for gardening that was sown into me from childhood.
Growing in the Spring can be exciting and rewarding as we say goodbye to the cold and sometimes dreary days of Winter and say hello to longer days and warmer temperature. Growing a Spring garden is the perfect way to celebrate. Additionally, transitioning to the Summer garden from the Spring garden is easy. Just replace the plants with new ones. I enjoy helping others grow and be successful with the Tower Garden. It allows me to plant seeds of the love of gardening for the next generation. Over the coming year, I will continue to share our family’s gardening journey here with you. I invite you to take a look at Tower Garden and the many ways it can help you grow easier and smarter. Please send me questions and any topics you would like for me to cover. If you would like to see our Tower Gardens, in person, please give me a call or send an email to arrange a time that’s best for both of us. Suzanne Pace
336-558-9012 pacefamily@triad.rr.com
When a friend introduced me to the Tower Garden, I was intrigued. I was excited at the thought of no dirt and no weeds and curious about the variety that I could grow all in one place. We decided to purchase one for ourselves and give it a try. It’s been over four years since we have been growing in our Tower Garden. The Tower Garden growing system has allowed us to grow a wider variety of crops and it has extended our growing seasons. Now we have two Tower Gardens that we grow on just a few steps from our front door. Spring growing is one of my favorites and it is a season where the crops growing on a Tower Garden thrive. Having a Tower covered in lettuces and greens is a beautiful sight to look at and a source of fresh, safe to eat produce for my family. We have several varieties of lettuces, greens, kale, and spinach that we like to grow each Spring. As the temperatures begin to warm and the sunlight during the days extends, the Tower Garden crops grow quickly. Choose a location for your Tower Garden that gets sun and it close to a water and electrical source. You can use a hose to fill and refresh the water. The pump and timer will need to be plugged in. There are some suggested placements of the plants on the Tower Garden. Plants that grow taller and higher such as celery, chard, and greens can be placed at the top. Plants that mound, such as certain lettuce varieties and the kales and spinach will do best in the middle. Place vining plants such as peas and beans near the bottom. Stock up on supplies to get your seeds started. In addition to seeds, you will need the growing medium used, called rockwool, and the liquid earth minerals that feed the roots. When your seedlings grow to about three inches tall and have roots protruding from the rockwool, you can plug them into your Tower Garden. All of these are already included with your Tower Garden. There are plenty of cool season crops that can be grown in the Spring on Tower Gardens. These crops don’t take long to sprout and produce and with the quicker growing rate of Tower Gardens, you’ll be eating them sooner that you can imagine. Consider planting your Spring Tower Garden with broccoli, mustard and collard greens, lettuces, spinach, kale, peas, chard, and cauliflower. These crops pack a big nutritional punch! You can pick them and eat directly from the Tower Garden as they grow, too. These plants will continue to produce for months.

Inflammation – the body’s protective reaction to injury, disease, or irritation of the tissues. Why is inflammation such a hot topic? Everyone is concerned about it because inflammation is the root of many common illnesses such as allergies, arthritis, asthma, celiac disease, Type 2 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), obesity, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, and cancer. There are some common foods that cause inflammation which many consume. The top culprits are Sugar, Gluten, Casein, and Whey. Simply put, they cause blood sugars to rise and increase inflammation. Refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup are the two main types of added sugar in the American diet. These are powerful triggers of the body’s inflammatory response. Read your nutrition labels to see if there are added sugars –any word ending in “ose” is another term for sugar; there are over 56 names for sugar! According to the American Heart Association, women should consume only 24g and 36g for men. Most get that much sugar before 10AM! What’s your favorite soft drink? Coco-Cola has 39 g of sugar/12oz, Fanta Orange has 44 g/12oz, Lipton Iced Tea 31g/12oz, Pepsi 41g/12oz, Mountain Dew contains 46g of sugar/12oz, and Dr. Pepper has 64g of sugar/20oz. Sports drinks aren’t much better. Gatorade Cool Blue has 21g/12oz while Red Bull contains 27g/8.4oz. Drinks usually are in 16oz – 20oz bottles and are labelled for more than 1 serving. I know that if I open an individual can or bottle then I’m going to finish it! Gluten is a protein found in grains, including wheat, rye, spelt, and barley with wheat being the most common. Many of these grains have been

genetically modified for greater yield, simultaneously becoming harder to digest. When flour made from these grains mixes with water, it forms a glue-like substance which makes the dough elastic and provides a chewy texture. Celiac disease is the most severe form of gluten intolerance. This autoimmune disorder attacks the lining of the gut causing nutritional deficiencies, anemia, and an increased risk of many other diseases. Gluten sensitivity is growing in the US. Symptoms include diarrhea, stomach pain, bloating, tiredness, and depression. IBD has been all over media outlets. It is a common digestive disorder with symptoms ranging from abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, to diarrhea, constipation, or both. Casein is a protein found in dairy; it is used in processed foods and in adhesives and paints. It has an inflammatory effect similar to gluten. Whey is another protein in dairy that body builders have used for years. Again, whey has an inflammatory effect on the body and has been shown to increase bulk as well as blood sugars. So, what do we do? My personal goal is to minimize added sugars by eliminating soft drinks, using gluten-free flours (almond, coconut, garbanzo, and oat) and limiting dairy to 1 ounce per day. This isn’t extreme since my family has been living the lifestyle for four years now! Next month – Foods and Spices to Fight Inflammation Questions? Email me at 4healthyhelpings@gmail.com

The exercises that'll take place from Mar. 26 through Apr. 9, 2021, An army release says it resembles extreme role playing in which trainees may fire blanks and engage with Fort Bragg soldiers acting as guerrilla fighters. Approximately 200 Special Forces students, 500 military/civilian support personnel, and 150 members of the general public serving as auxiliary will be participating in and/or providing support during each of these exercises.
Local, Family-owned, Veteran-Owned, Organic Produce in Liberty, NC With all the uncertainty surrounding the food supply chain, skyrocketing food costs, and safety concerns over chemically-treated produce, it only makes sense to take greater ownership over what we feed ourselves and our families. Whether you are an active gardener, an aspiring one, or just someone who wants to eat vine-ripened, organically grown produce picked at the peak of flavor - Revival Garden Service LLC and Earth & Dirt Family Farm LLC in Liberty, NC are proud to serve you. Barbara Vespa and her family own both businesses, the latter of which began last year after joining the Liberty community following more than a decade of military service.
In addition to Randolph, staging areas will be largely on private land in Alamance, Anson, Bladen, Brunswick, Cabarrus, Chatham, Columbus, Cumberland, Davidson, Guilford, Harnett, Hoke, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, New Hanover, Richmond, Robeson, Rowan, Scotland, Stanly, Union and Wake counties. Revival Garden Service LLC takes the apprehension and uncertainty out of growing your own organic food with practical, low-maintenance, water-conserving garden designs; locally grown and personally field-tested vegetable transplants; and committed guidance. Revival installs, designs, maintains, and consults on organic vegetable & native plant gardens and orchards. We draw on more than eight years of experience working with restaurants, schools, farms, businesses, residential customers, and planned communities across the Southeastern United States to grow organic produce and teach food selfsufficiency. Revival also specializes in edible landscaping - incorporating fruit, vegetables, edible flowers and herbs into existing flower and shrub landscapes for more purposeful spaces. People spend so much time, money, and energy on lawncare for so little reward. By incorporating edibles into the landscape, you perform much less-maintenance and you feed your family for a fraction of the cost. Later this year, Revival hopes to open its nursery to the public as well. Revival may be reached at 912-321-2359 or barbara@revivalgardens.com Earth & Dirt Family Farm LLC specializes in North Carolina and Southeastern heirloom produce, along with more unique produce from Asia, Africa and South & Central America – all which grow exceptionally well in our climate. We also offer an array of edible flowers, cut flowers, herbs, and small-batch grains like amaranth. Everything we grow, from seed to harvest, is done on our farm using certified organic seed and following strict organic growing practices. This year, we are especially proud to offer the Huckleberry Potato – the only low-glycemic index potato on the market today. Other highlights this year include: Eastern NC heirloom butter collards, NC heirloom pickling cucumbers, Peruvian Rocoto hot peppers, Pippin’s Golden Honey Sweet Peppers – an heirloom of the African American community - and over 23 varieties of heirloom slicing and cherry tomatoes! You will rarely find anything we grow in a grocery store! Visit us every Saturday from 9am-1pm at the Farmers Market in Liberty. Or, order online for your convenience (http://www.revivalgardens.com/store) and pick up twice a week from one of our produce drop-off sites, the Liberty Farmers Market on 423 W. Swannanoa Ave, or Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church at 4400 Alamance Church Rd in Liberty. We can also deliver direct to your door for an additional fee. You may also order over the phone at 336-622-5876 or email barbara@revivalgardens.com

19 Issue 4 The Liberty Leader NewspaperFootprints, that perhapsVolume another,
presents Celebration of Spring 2021 Spring has sprung! It arrived on Saturday, March 20, at 5:37 am. In celebration of Spring, we present you with the gift of two best-loved poems by two well-loved poets. Let your heart sing with the Joy of spring! “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost (1874-1963) Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. “A Psalm of Life” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) What the heart of the young man said to the Psalmist Tell me not, in mournful numbers, Life is but an empty dream! For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem. Life is real! Life is earnest!
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again. Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait. Any and all of you are welcome to share your best loved poem, your story or your short cut that helps make your life more enjoyable or easier or in greater service to others. Thank you for visiting us this month! As always you are welcome to use our email for your Sharing, Questions or Comments: bitsnpiecesliberty@gmail.com
And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest, Was not spoken of the soul. Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way; But to act, that each tomorrow
Find us farther than today. Art is long, and Time is fleeting, And our hearts, though stout and brave, Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave. In the world’s broad field of battle, In the bivouac of Life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife! Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act,—act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o’erhead! Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time;—

AMERICAN LEGION POST 81
Liberty American Legion Post 81 News March/ April 2021 I would like to take this opportunity to THANK All the folks in the community that supported our chicken pie dinner on Saturday, 27 February 2021. With your help it was a great success. I am in hopes that all enjoyed their meal. Thank you, Again! In March of each year The National Organization of the American Legion sends out Certificates of Continuous Memberships. This year it was my Honor to give Mr. Johnny Younts his 75 years of Continuous Membership Certificate in Liberty American Legion Post 81. Over the last twenty years I have had the Honor of giving 50, 60, 70 years certificates. I think this is the first time that I had the honor of presenting Mr. Younts with 75 years continuous membership. He had no idea he had been a member for that long……Johnny will be 100 years in December. We had our first meeting on 11 March 2021 since last November. We had a small group and we conducted several business items. We voted to keep our Dues at $30.00 next year, but we are expecting a dues increase in the near future. We scheduled another BBQ in April and next month is the election of Officers. It seems that American Legion Baseball and Girls fast pitch softball is getting ready to start. The Tar Heels Boy State Program at Catawba College is making plans to have half the boy’s they normally have because of C-19. Boys Scouts program is strong across the State, and we are getting ready to select the Eagle Scout of the year. The Department just select two boys to attend Philmont with a $1500.00 scholarship each. Liberty American Legion Post is working our Membership Roster and trying to renew memberships, sign new member and transfer members from HQ Post 1981 to make our membership goal. At the present time the Post is at about 93% and needs about 15 members. Our Sons of the American Legion Squadron 81 is about 100%. The Post has several Members that have been in the hospital and had surgeries and we sent cards and ask for prayers for each family. We also prayed for the troops overseas and around the nation that are protecting our freedoms each day, and for our Nation. “ Veterans Still Serving Veterans & America”

Mount Pleasant Baptist Church From our Pastor . . . April 2021 It is hard to believe that it is April and that Easter is already here. Before I get into Easter I would like to encourage all of you to continue praying about reopening the Church and starting back more programs. I also encourage you to continue looking at the spiritual needs of those around you and lift them up in prayer. So, it is Easter once again and we will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. But why is His resurrection so important? Why do we celebrate? Jesus told us that He was the “resurrection and the life”. His resurrection is the foundation of Christianity. 1 Corinthians 15:14-17 says: 14 And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. 15 Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise. 16 For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. 17 And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! (NKJV) The resurrection of Christ is the key to our faith and our preaching. Paul tells us that our teaching, preaching, and faith are EMPTY without the resurrection. The resurrection of Christ is our Hope and our Gospel. It is not only important that we celebrate but it is important that we let others know why it is so important to us. I could give hundreds of reasons for why the resurrection is so important, but below are five reasons that are good ways to explain the importance to those who do not know Him. 1. It is proof that Jesus is the Son of God. 2. It proves the prophecies to be true. 3. It shows that Christ has defeated death and therefore won the victory for us. 4. Romans 4:25 says that it shows we have been justified before God. 5. It gives us living hope. Celebrate Easter and the Hope it gives by letting others know about the reason Christ died and rose again. --Pastor Jimmy Come visit Mount Pleasant Baptist Church 7103 Sandy Creek Church Road Staley, NC 27355 Sundays: Worship at 10am (parking lot, sanctuary, Facebook Live) with Children’s Worship beginning April 18th Youth at 6pm Tuesdays: Prayer Time at 10am Wednesdays: Bible Study at 6:30pm More Opportunities for Worship! Planning pays in retirement Personal savings are key to living comfortably Michael doesn’t see himself living on the beach when he retires, but he’d like to vacation there with his wife. He worries he isn’t saving enough in the 401(k) account he has at work, but he isn’t sure what more he can manage with two kids, a mortgage and credit cards. Michael faces two dilemmas: Saving enough money for a comfortable retirement, and making those savings last his lifetime. Like most Americans, having money in retirement may depend on part-time jobs, personal savings and tax-advantaged retirement savings accounts. A financial representative can help people like Michael understand their options, such as 401(k) and 403(b) plans, annuities, and individual retirement accounts (IRAs). The key is to set goals and get started. The longer you wait to start saving, the more you will have to save to reach those goals.
