Celebrate Liberty Festival A Huge Success
Back in 1999 Celebrate Liberty's Children which was an advocacy group to get kids age 0-5 healthy and ready for school was born. This was a function of the Liberty Chamber and local community volunteers. To kick this off they held a festival that was a great down home day centered around what our town is called , Liberty. From this spark we have what we enjoyed this July. In addition the committee changed the name from Liberty July Celebration back Events Calendar to Celebrate Liberty Festival. This year thanks to the generosity of Janice and Andy Sykes, Chip Butler and Liberty Rotary they covered the cost for the FREE KID-ZONE, where all kids played for free at no cost. This are included August climbing walls, inflatables to water rides. A huge winner was also the Liberty Fire Dept for providing not only fire 6 VBS Pg.6 trucks for kids to see but the ladder truck spraying water down for kids to enjoy. The Liberty Police Dept was very 7 Revival Pg. 5-6 instrumental in helping with the safety and managing the traffic after the fireworks. The Liberty Cub scouts Troop 11 Grand Opening Pg.19 502 provided this years free old fashion gaming area. Liberty Food Lion provided the free watermelons for the kids 17 Movie Night Pg. 10 to compete in the watermelon roll and the watermelon eating contest. As you can see listed below is the numerous 18 Community Meeting Pg.5 sponsors that contributed that allowed this event to take place. This year we 18 Fishing Tournament 22 Back to School Bash Pg.12 moved the stage to First UMC church ground and the shade trees provided 25 Free Hair Cut Pg. 29 much needed relief from the sun while the stage provided great music and demonstrations of the local Southeastern Karate and Sapphire Dance Future Dates Studio. A second stage was added on Swannanoa Ave to allow extra music. Fried Chicken and BBQ Sale A whole new addition was added this year with great success. That would Sept. 29 Pg.4 be the first ever Beer Garden in Liberty. Four Saints Brewery was the host Dental Bus Oct. 5 Pg.4 vendor and many thanks for Joel the owner that helped the town make sure all was in line. A special thanks to Councilmen Chris Compton that provided Next Edition a great shaded location. A super huge thank you to the Liberty Public Works Sept 7 for cleaning up the area after the festival that was a late night task. They also keep the trash containers emptied all day long. A long days of planning Deadline goes to the Liberty Redevelopment Committee for working out the details. Aug 31 The committee is comprised of , Town Manager Will Doerfer, Councilman Chris Compton, Teresa Bruchon, Debbie Adams, Angela Bell, Jason Clark, Ethan Morrow, Carol Wall, and Kevin Bowman. I believe the rest of this story is covered best by the pictures. Look forward to planning starting for next years festival. Many more things on tap for this coming year. New Friends Group, Heritage Festival, Highlight Patterson Cottage Museum
Eagle Scout Award Austin Luke Cook Received the Eagle Scout Award on June 12th, 2018 for helping with the community food pantry. He created a food box for people in need Austin is 17 years old from Julian NC.
The Patterson Cottage Museum is gaining some new friends. A non profit group interested in supporting the museum has recently been formed and will soon be promoting the cottage, doing fund raising and holding special events. The first event will be a talk by Wally Jarrell, author of The “Randolph Hornets in the Civil War”. See separate article in the Liberty Leader for more information on this program. The group will also take part in the annual Heritage Festival at the Cottage held the last Saturday in September. (For more about this Festival, see the end of this article). The group, called Friends of the Historic Patterson Cottage Museum, Inc., decided to support the little museum after it was made aware of the need for a more secure, climate controlled space to house Liberty’s artifacts. When the 1884 cottage was moved onto Town property in 1974, the Town voted to have no expense involved in the building. The Town does, however, provide insurance on the building and contents and mows the yard. Everything else is provided by volunteers and donations from the community. Over the years, some of the artifacts collected in the 1970’s have begun to suffer in the unheated, un-air conditioned building, especially textiles and photos. Some glassware has been ruined over the years by an invasion of squirrels requiring the Patterson Cottage Committee to invest in display cases to house artifacts. Among the purposes of the charitable, educational organization are: To aid, assist and promote interest in and development of the Patterson Cottage Museum and any future branches. To assist in fundraising projects in support of the Patterson Cottage Museum through gifts, bequests and dues. To promote the concept that the Patterson Cottage Museum is an integral part of the community and a public resource. One of the long range goals of the Friends of the Patterson Cottage Museum will be to raise money to find an expanded, sustainable, more secure home for the museum. The vision of the Friends is to maintain the historic cottage as a cottage, furnished as it might have been in the 1880’s, and to find or build a suitable museum to house most of the artifacts that represent Liberty’s heritage. The Friends will meet in August to decide a membership dues schedule, a newsletter and other fund raising ideas. Members of the Board of Directors of the Friends are: Judy Hernandez, President, Terry Crouse, Vice-President, Janet Rodriguez, Secretary, Sandra Dixon, Treasurer, Lisa Brower, Judy Butler, Gary Davis, Jack Garner, Cindy Garrett, Judy Herndon, Tonya Shoffner and Matt Talbott. The Patterson Cottage Museum Heritage Festival will be held Saturday, September 29, at the Cottage from 10-3. Admission is free and the public is invited. The Festival highlights the skills and crafts our ancestors. There will be weavers, pottery, a blacksmith, carvers, other vendors, music and food and the museum will be open. Wally Jarrell to Give Civil War Program

Wally Jarrell, author of “The Randolph Hornets in the Civil War” will present a program on Randolph County’s role in the War Saturday, August 18, at 11:00 in the Council Room at the Liberty Town Hall. The program, sponsored by the Friends of the Patterson Cottage Museum, is free and the public is invited. Jarrell is widely considered an expert on Company M and its parent regiment the 22nd North Carolina Infantry, which included many men from Liberty and Randolph County. He will also display part of his Civil War artifact collection including weapons and a replica uniform as worn by the men of Company M. The Patterson Cottage Museum will be open to the public from 11-2 on August 18, also. The museum houses several Civil War items, in addition to an eclectic collection of artifacts from the area. To start of, we need to know what Rotary is. Rotary was founded on February 23,1905. It is the largest service organization in the world. One of their major contributions to the world has been to come close to eliminating Polio. Last year there was only 8 cases in the whole world. Paul Harris was one the founding members in Illinois that started this great organization. Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision. For more than 110 years, Rotary's people of action have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects. From literacy and peace to water and health, they are always working to better our world, and they stay committed to the end. Object of Rotary The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
The Four-Way Test The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarian's to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarian's recite it at club meetings: Of the things we think, say or do Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? So the Liberty Rotary is made up of 24 local people and are always open door to more that want to serve the community. Service Before Self is their motto. Rotary was founded in Jan 11, 1929 (actually started meeting in 1928). They have been the sponsor of the Boy Scout Troop 502 and provided them with their hut and land to hold meeting. Our Liberty Club was the first to have a Paul Harris Fellow in our distrit. They currently meet every Thursday at 6:30pm at Beaver Creek BBQ with a meeting and a meal to follow. Some of the things that Liberty Rotary has and/or still does, sponsor a health clinic with flu shots, breakfast for Boy Scouts, golf tournament, free dictionaries for all 3rd graders in Randolph Co, donated items to Liberty Fire and Police Dept., local high school scholarships each year, adopt a high way, sponsor High School Jrs for Leadership week at Guilford College, sponsor international dental clinic, sponsor of numerous local events (such as Free Play at KIDZONE at Celebrate Liberty Festival), feeding Liberty School Backpack program kids during summer months, building the 4 shelters at Liberty Farmers Market (along with help from Supertex and Ed Cummings) and numerous others. Their biggest club motto is , "A good Rotarian never says NO" At the installation for the new club year, New President Chip Butler, recognized , Robert Wilkie with the president's award for excellence, David Beck got the "service above self " award and Paula Linberry got the "distinguished award" for best supporting Rotarian. President Chip Butler stated, "we want to continue to be a resource for the community, if anyone interested in joining call 336-622-5515 or contact a member." Eastern Randolph is proud to release the Class of 2018 Hall of Fame Inductees. They will be inducted on August 31 at the halftime ceremony. There will be reception in the gym lobby prior to the ceremony for family and friends of the inductees. This is an exceptional class of Eastern Randolph’s athletes and coaches that contributed to entire student population, community, and state.

Fire District Receives New Rating After Inspection State Officials Award New District Rating RALEIGH - North Carolina Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Causey announced today that the following Fire Districts completed their routine inspection and received the listed rating, on listed effective dates. The inspection, conducted by officials with the Department of Insurance Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM), is required on a regular basis as part of the North Carolina Response Rating System (NCRRS). Among other things, the routine inspections look for proper staffing levels, sufficient equipment, proper maintenance of equipment, communications capabilities and availability of a water source. District Type Rating Effective ======== =========== ========= Liberty Municipal 3 10/01/2018 N E Randolph Rural 4/9E 10/01/2018 The NCRRS rating system ranges from one (highest) to 10 (not recognized as a certified fire department by the state), with most rural departments falling into the 9S category. While lower ratings do not necessarily indicate poor service, a higher rating does suggest that a department is overall better equipped to respond to fires in its district. Higher ratings can also significantly lower homeowners insurance rates in that fire district. "I'd like to congratulate Chief Talbott for the department's performance and for the hard work of all the department members," said Commissioner Causey. "The citizens in the Town of these districts should rest easy knowing they have a fine group of firefighters protecting them and their property in case of an emergency.� State law requires OSFM officials to inspect departments serving districts of 100,000 people or less, which makes up all but twelve of the state's fire districts.

Local Liberty Girl Wins Duathlon In Mississippi While vacationing with her aunt and uncle in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, Lily Butler signed up to race in a Duathlon with her uncle Steve. The ‘In Hot Pursuit Duathlon and Road Race’ was held on June 30th in hot Mississippi. This race was organized to raise funds to support The Hancock County Canine Operation, which benefits K9 units serving and protecting the local bay area community. This 4th annual race had over 75 teams competing in a 2-11-2 course. A participant from each team would run two miles, tag their team partner who would then bike 11 miles, and the last team member would run two miles. Lily started the race by running two miles. Uncle Steve completed the middle part of the course by biking 11 miles. Lily completed the final leg of the race by running two more miles. Although Uncle Steve is an avid biker, this was the first official race that Lily had entered. We are proud to announce that Lily and Uncle Steve won the ‘In Hot Pursuit Duathlon and Road Race’!!! The combined time for the 2-11-2 race was 01.16.02 . This was a monumental feat considering the level of competition. By the way, Uncle Steve is 69 years old and Lily just turned 14. Way to go team!

John "Buddy" Poe May 2018
was flying home with his wife from visiting his sister in California, when he had a stroke on the airplane. The plane landed in Salt Lake City, Utah, and John was rushed to the hospital where he spent a week in ICU! Scans revealed John had actually suffered two different types of strokes, affecting the whole right side of his brain (which controls left side of the body), leaving John with left side paralysis! After almost a month in Utah, John was able to fly home, and then immediately transported to High Point Regional Rehabilitation Center where he spent another month! John was finally able to return home on June 19, two months after leaving home for his California trip. Everything is different now, but both John and his wife, Carolyn are thankful for God's mercy and that John is still here!! Due to John's paralysis, he has to have daily assistance for everyday tasks and cannot stay alone. He will not be able to return to work. John's sister and brother in law, Jim and Linda Smith have taken on the responsibility of staying with John during the day while his wife, Carolyn has had to return to work. However, Carolyn is still having to miss quite a bit of work due to weekly Dr. appointments and therapy sessions (several per week)!! John is learning to use a hemi walker some, but still has a long journey ahead of him!! Medical bills and regular bills have started to pile in, adding more uncertainty to the days ahead. Family and friends will be hosting a BBQ Benefit for John "Buddy" Poe on Saturday, September 8 from 3-7 pm at the American Legion Hut in Liberty with gospel music, a silent auction,and a raffle! Please come out for good food and fellowship to help support this family in their time of need! The family of John "Buddy" Poe is forever grateful for everyone's prayers and contributions thus far!! May God bless you all!!

Silk Hope Ruritan Scholarship Night A Success!

There was loads of amazing food and great conversation, but most importantly there was giving. The Silk Hope Ruritan club gave in excess of $11,000 to eighteen graduating seniors. Funds for these scholarships come from money raised through the Silk Hope Ruritan Club’s Benefit Bingo and from the profits earned at the Ruritan’s own Old Fashioned Farmers’ Days held every Labor Day weekend. Ten of these students graduated from Jordan Matthews, two from Northwood, four from Chatham Charter, one from Chatham Central and one was home schooled. Ten of these scholars will be attending four year colleges while eight will attend community colleges.
