A Reflection on Juneteenth and the Spirit of Community -Brenda Hornsby Heindl, Branch Manager, Liberty Public Library If you missed the Juneteenth celebration on June 19th at Paul Henry Smith Park, you missed witnessing a lot of amazing things. There was dancing, games, crafts, vendors, food, and enrichment. For me, this event was a breathtaking culmination to a grant the Library had received in order to reach out to our community and find ways in which to be more engaged outside of the library walls. When I reached out to Sandra Cheek Bartell and Michelle Hooker-Ravenell about having one of our community conversations on June 19th to celebrate Juneteenth, I never would have imagined that the vibrancy of such an event could have been achieved in less than one month of planning.

In the spring it was discovered that the original location of what was once called The Liberty Negro School built in 1927 stood on the grounds of Paul Henry Smith Park. This school was also what was called a Rosenwald School, one of hundreds of schools built for black children in the South in the 1910s and 1920s, funded in part by a man named Julius Rosenwald. Gisela Pacheco, programming coordinator at the Liberty Public Library, teamed up with local high schooler Kara Wiley in order to start researching the school. Through Sandra and Michelle they were able to find several individuals who attended the school which burned down in 1947. One student, Ms. Clara Shoffner, spoke at the Juneteenth Festival and shared her experiences of the school. At the event we wrapped up an art project that had been a part of each of our four

community conversations held in May and June which involved having people paint small 4”x4” canvases that all had quarter circles traced on one corner. We have now photographed the small canvases and made banners with the artwork created by our community to hang outside of the library. For the Juneteenth event, Michelle Hooker-Ravenell painted an enormous banner that hung from the picnic shelter and made for a spirited photo backdrop. Maybe it was people wanting to get out more after restrictions for Covid-19 had changed. Maybe it was Keith Bartell’s amazing music that he shared. But I think the energy that was there that day was more, and a palpable vibrancy ran through the large crowd of people showing support for their community, their park, and for sharing about heritage and history. If you missed the Juneteenth Celebration this year, be sure to mark your calendars for June 19, 2022, and get on board for revitalizing Paul Henry Smith Park and creating more events and programs for the community to participate in. Michelle Hooker-Ravenell is working with a group of local citizens to revive and revitalize Paul Henry Smith Park. She can be reached at 336-963-7936 You can call (336-622-4605) or e-mail (library@townoflibertync.org) if you want to be a part of the 2022 Juneteenth Celebration. A committee is forming for planning the event. Photos included were taken by the Liberty Public Library and by Elliott Cheek of Unlimited Exposures Photography out of Charlotte, NC.

Gwen Taylor - Owner / Preparer 728 S Greensboro St, Liberty Ph 336-622-5722

From Andy Clapp Saw something great in Scripture today. Is your life stagnant because of worries - most of the time, worries cripple the movement of our lives, holding us in one place for long periods of time, robbing us of the opportunity to do anything. Here is how Paul remedied this Philippians 4:4-8 1 - Praise - Start praising the Lord right now for anything you can nd to praise Him for in your life and situation (vs. 4 2 - Pray - Turn over what is out of your control to the One who is in control (vs. 6 3 - Peace ows when it's given to the Lord - when we allow Him to do what He can do, we can rest in knowing He is able (vs. 7 4 - Perspective results - we can stop focusing on the. worries and begin focusing on the goodness of the Lord (vs. 8)

Mys cal Re ec on If you have driven down Greensboro Street recently you may have noticed that Liberty Friends Church has a new stained glass window on the front of their church. The over 100 year old church window that had been there since the church was built was coming apart, panes were falling out and the wood frame was rotten. The quest to get a new stained glass window installed became a bit of a family affair. Mystical Reflections Stained Glass Studio in Calabash, NC is co-owned by hometown girl, Felecia (Roach) Blair. Mystical Reflections worked with the church members to come up with a design and colors to best complement the Liberty Friends culture. Felecia, along with co-owner, Lisa Bason, took on the task. The window is 2’ wide x 5’ tall with 169 pieces. The design features an angel with outstretched arms in a glorious sky of yellows and oranges, complete with a beautiful flowing blue dress and a halo. In traditional stained glass window style, the angel is framed out with amber and purple glass. Lisa handled the meticulous job of designing, fitting and soldering each of the pieces. This labor of love took over 100 hours from start to finish. Once the window was complete, the stained glass then needed to be protected by tempered glass before being placed in its handmade wooden frame. The decision was made to transport the window to a glass company in Greensboro. The dilemma then became how to get it from Calabash to Greensboro due to its size. Felecia’s brother, Billy Roach, and his wife, Rhonda, came to the rescue by transporting the stained glass window from the coast to Greensboro via their RV. The stained glass window was installed on June 23, 2021. The installation was done by the install team from Salem Stained Glass in East Bend, NC. Sean and Hunter took great care to remove the old one, keeping as many of the old panes intact as possible, and get the new one in place. Many, many thanks to them!

In the near future, there will be lights installed behind the angel so she can be lit up at night. If you haven’t had the good fortune to see this beautiful work of art, drive by 316 N. Greensboro Street in Liberty NC and check it out. Better yet, stop in at Liberty Friends Church on Sundays at 11am for worship service where you’ll be welcomed by some of the most wonderful folks in town.

Bits’n’Pieces presents A Reader Shares TIPS FOR FLOWING TOWARD ACCEPTANCE Flowing Toward Acceptanc The pandemic, for all its challenges, losses and disappointments, certainly did help move me along in my acceptance of change. I decided to write, here, about some of the ways I helped myself during the past year to embrace change and move toward acceptance Praying for Hel This is at the top of my list, because, if you believe in some higher power, why not tap in and ask for support? Fear and anxiety have become key aspects of how we feel these days. I believe a large part of this stems from the concept in our dominant culture that we need to be independent in all things. Self-reliance has risen in status from the times when people lived more in community than they do now. Going back in history to tribal or village life, no one worried about having to be a jack-of-all-trades. Each member of the community honed their own particular strengths and became known for their talents or abilities. But in modern times, we not only have to run our own small business, do our own publicity, understand the legalities involved, and hire good employees or consultants such as tax accountants. That is, if we are lucky enough to have the resources to do so. Otherwise, it’s also up to us to nd the right IT equipment, run our own antivirus software and back-ups, and stay on top of the email. Why have we bought into the idea that we have to be and do it all in order to be successful, worthy of love and admiration and … happy? Why have we traded away our sense of contentment, self-acceptance and inner peace on the idea that we have to do it all ourselves Over time, I have learned to heal my spiritual relationship to my higher power, whom I am content with calling by the name of “God.” I’ve learned to stop believing that when bad things happen, they are the result of His dissatisfaction with me or some sort of divine punishment. In fact, my faith in His love is such that I can now ask for help, and actually experience the feeling of turning my problems over to Him. At least one or two problems at a time! But that’s progress all the same! I have gradually released myself from feeling responsible for the happiness of others, especially family and friends. So long as I hold myself accountable for my actions and do the best I can with what I’m given, I am primarily responsible for my own happiness. The more I depend upon God, the closer the two of us become, the more I am able to hear His messages, and the greater my capacity grows to accept what life, and God, offer me Recognizing and Befriending Personal Limitation In 2015 I nally received a diagnosis for a neurological condition, a medical con rmation of what I’d known for 20 years was an issue, and yet despite all my attempts, had been unsuccessful in nding a diagnosis for. I’d come to feel that this unidenti ed illness was going to win if I didn’t nd some clarity soon. And then the impasse shifted. I got to the right doctor at the right time who ordered the right test that produced the necessary data. I’ll never forget the day I got the call from my neurologist, asking me to pack a bag and head for the hospital for tests and monitoring. They had nally seen on my EEG that all was not well. What a relief! Information and help was on its way Since that fateful time of clarity and diagnosis, I’ve learned to embrace my limitations. Gradually and day by day. And sometimes, I still don’t accept them. My husband and I have a standing joke about this. He used to remind me, frequently, about my condition, when I maintained my perfectionistic habits. One day I complained to him, “I’m tired of your reminders about my condition!” He immediately quipped, “Okay, I won’t refer to your condition any longer. From now on, I’ll talk about your rabbits!” The renaming of my condition as my “rabbits” brought on instant laughter. In fact, I still smile at the word. And because I got the giggles every time he repeated the phrase, “but you have RABBITS,” it stuck. And we’ve found all sorts of ways to incorporate the joke into our lives. The reference to rabbits has taken on a life of its own and continues daily to help me befriend the limitations associated with my illness. I suppose all of this is just another way to soften around the hard edges that life presents. By looking outside of ourselves, to a Higher Power for guidance, and by looking inside of ourselves, to the limitations that de ne our lives, it is possible to embrace what seems dif cult to live with or impossible to believe. We nd, one day at a time, that a yielding acceptance can bring tremendous relief and a welcomed sense of support and safety in this challenging and uncertain world. Dear Reader, thank you for sharing your Wisdom and your Life Lessons with us! You are welcome back at any time. Other readers, please share any life stories, joys and challenges that you have been able to overcome. Everything that helps you, helps us all! Planning pays in retirement Personal savings are key to living comfortably Michael doesn’t see himself living on the beach when he retires, but he’d like to vacation there with his wife. He worries he isn’t saving enough in the 401(k) account he has at work, but he isn’t sure what more he can manage with two kids, a mortgage and credit cards. Michael faces two dilemmas: Saving enough money for a comfortable retirement, and making those savings last his lifetime. Like most Americans, having money in retirement may depend on part-time jobs, personal savings and tax-advantaged retirement savings accounts. A financial representative can help people like Michael understand their options, such as 401(k) and 403(b) plans, annuities, and individual retirement accounts (IRAs). The key is to set goals and get started. The longer you wait to start saving, the more you will have to save to reach those goals.

I can help you plan for life. J. B. Griffith, III, FIC, LUTCF, RICP, ChFC®, CLU® 147 S. Fayetteville Street PO Box 699 Liberty, NC 27298 B. 336-622-6020 C. 336-908-1748 j.b.griffith.3rd@mwarep.org
