There is Good News By: Andy Clapp The evening news paints a bleak future, not only about today but also tomorrow. Stories of wars, sickness, crime, drugs, and sheer hopelessness throughout the world, leaving us to wonder why we even get out of the bed, why do we seek to put forth the effort. Politics seem to be the driving force of every decision each day and as we look at reality, the bleakest picture is what is most often seen. Pain. Suffering. Darkness. Chaos. Such was the world before now. As God had spoken through the prophets, the words spoke a truth to a world mired in the same circumstances and in the same condition as our world today. The message – My Son is coming. Isaiah spoke to the One who would come, prophesying that Immanuel would be sent, would willingly step out of the perfection of heaven to walk upon the broken earth enshrouded in darkness and decaying with each passing day. God with us. Micah told that Bethlehem would be the place. A census ordered ensured the place at the precise moment. And He came. As the shepherds carried about a normal night, possibly pondering the same questions as we ponder today, they received a message that changed everything. The angel spoke, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: Today a Savior, who is Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David.” (Luke 2:10-11 HCSB) Though the tragic was all around, there was a reason to have hope from that moment forward. There was news to share that uplifted, news that could instill eternity into the hearts of humanity focused on the temporary. Jesus had come and the world was forever changed. Today, we forget the story and the message of Christmas. Overwhelmed by the condition of the day and the broken nature of the world, we immerse ourselves more into customs of the season rather than immersing ourselves in the manger, the message, and the meaning. There is good news for us, just as there was good news for the shepherds that night in the field. Not only did Christ come, but as we look at Scripture more closely, we see that the angel instructed the shepherds how to find the Messiah. The angel continued, “This will be the sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a feeding trough.” (Luke 2:12) There would be no doubt which child was the One they were searching for and there was no question where to find Him. The same holds true today. You can find Him today. There is hope even in the midst of this despair and there is light even in this time of immense darkness. However, He will not be found in the malls or in any store, but rather in the manger. May God bless you and refocus you this Christmas season.

Gifts We Offer Him Christmas is a special time of year, one in which we celebrate by giving gifts to loved ones. We spend time and serious thought trying to pick just the right gift to show we care and desire to bring happiness to our loved one. We go to great lengths to find the best deals on the perfect gifts, some even sacrificing sleep and comfort to be the first in line when the store opens to ensure we get that item on sale. Time, care and effort are spent wrapping the gift beautifully, to increase the excitement the receiver has when the gift is presented. Sometimes we can become consumed with focusing on the gifts we give to others. With so many friends and loved ones to buy or make gifts for, it’s hard not to spend a tremendous amount of time focusing on gifts. We all want our friends, family and children to be pleased with what we give them. Parents desire nothing more than to see an explosion of excitement when their children receive their gifts. It occurred to me this Christmas season that we have shifted our focus from the supernatural gift we have all been given by God with the birth of Christ, our Savior, to the gifts we give each other. As we have all received the best gift that could ever be given, what are we giving back to God? Do we spend the time and effort on offering gifts to Him that we do to others? Do we sacrifice our sleep and comfort to give gifts back to God? Do we truly celebrate the birth of our Savior or the coming of Santa? I recently went to a Christmas Shop that was dedicated to all things Christmas-decorations, Christmas trees, lights, miniature villages, etc. You name it, they had it. In this huge store, probably close to 4,000 square feet, there was only one little corner dedicated to Jesus. It was such a representation of how we celebrate Christmas. It has become all about Santa, snowmen, toy soldiers and GIFTS. We hardly reserve any space for Jesus. We’ve put Him in a tiny little corner of our heart, while the rest of the space is dedicated to the other stuff, the stuff that really doesn’t matter. This Christmas season, I challenge you (and myself) to search your heart for what gifts you can offer to God. If we only spent half the time, dedication and energy on gifts for God as we do on Christmas gifts for others, imagine what the world would be like. But doesn’t He deserve all our time, energy and dedication, considering what He has done for us? What gifts are you giving to Jesus this year, the one who quietly established Christmas all those years ago, the one whose birth defines time, the one who was born to give His life to save yours? RCC Board of Trustees continues mission of Pathways to Prosperity Randolph Community College’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to move forward with the application process for the College’s Agribusiness Technology program with the North Carolina Community College System at Thursday’s meeting in the Martha Luck Comer Conference Center on the Asheboro Campus. Vice President for Administrative Services Daffie Garris gave a report on the renovation of the Welding Lab at the Archdale Center, noting that demolition was under way. “Because of the great success of the Welding program and the need in that industry, we are adding more welding booths so we can train more students,” RCC President Dr. Robert Shackleford Jr. said. Both the Agribusiness Technology program and the Welding program are part of the Pathways to Prosperity — a collaborative effort with RCC, the Randolph County School System, Asheboro City Schools, and local businesses and industries in Randolph County. The Trustees also voted unanimously to support Shackleford’s support of the continued use of the quarter-cent tax referendum funds for the capital needs of RCC.

RCC’s Human Services Club Helps Students at CCC

Volume 16 Issue 12

The Human Services Club at Randolph Community College recently donated much-needed supplies for the hurricane-affected Human Services students at Carteret Community College (CCC). For the past two years, the Club has put together 50 Blessing Bags to take to local agencies and ministries to be distributed to the homeless in Randolph County. This year, Club President Teresa Herring suggested the members help out CCC students. CCC and the residents of Morehead City were devastated by 25 inches of rain from Hurricane Florence. As a result of the massive flooding, the college was closed for three weeks before students could return to campus. “It’s practically impossible to travel within our area without seeing the scars left by the horrific storms,” CCC Program Head for Human Services Kathy Foster said. “Knowing that one of our sister programs cared enough to collect donations for items that were in short supply was heartwarming and encouraging. [The RCC] students’ kindness exemplifies the heart of the field of human services.” Herring emailed Foster to find out what the students needed most, and the RCC Human Services Club members gathered 20 bottles of laundry detergent, 12 bags of feminine products, 528 rolls of toilet paper, 51 bottles of bleach, 236 rolls of paper towels, 16 six-packs of mosquito donuts, two No-Pest strips, and 24 cans of mosquito spray. “I am so proud of the initiative displayed by our Human Services Club president … and by the entire Club,” said Scott Smith, Department Head for Human Services Technology at RCC. For more information about the Human Services Technology program at RCC, contact Smith at 336-633-0202 or email sasmith@randolph.edu.

Don’t Get Snowed Under This Christmas: Tips to Spend Wisely

Hurricane

(StatePoint) Even after setting a holiday budget, the most wonderful time of year is often the most expensive. Experts say that this Christmas, there are new ways to make your dollar go further.

“The days of clipping coupons may be out of style, but finding ways to save money never is,” says Michael McAuliffe, president of Family Credit Management. “From in-store apps to price trackers, new tech tools can help.” The experts at Family Credit Management are encouraging consumers to research their money-saving options, as technology is always evolving. To get you started, they have narrowed down a few tech-savvy ways to streamline and save this season. • Browser Extensions: Forty-six percent of all holiday shopping occurs online, according to WeAreTop10, so, do your share of it wisely. Whether you use Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari or Firefox as your internet browser, there are sites you can visit to add an extension to your searching power. It’s like adding an additional search box which will know to look for the best deals out there whenever you are shopping online and compare prices side-by-side, cutting out some of the legwork for you. Some well-known examples are PriceBlink, The Camelizer and InvisibleHand. • Coupon Apps: Mobile apps such as Coupon Sherpa, SnipSnap and Yowza, enable you to scan items while you’re in-store and find the best value coupons on the spot. • Price Drop Alert Trackers: Eighty-four percent of Americans plan to check Amazon before looking or buying elsewhere, according to the Accenture Holiday Shopping Survey. Don’t make the mistake of assuming Amazon is the be-all-and-end-all for saving. Prices drop all the time, especially around Christmas. But, how can you keep track of who is dropping them and when? With a tracker app, you can tell the app what to look for and it will notify you when your wanted items drop in price. IFTTT (If This Then That), camelcamelcamel and Price Tracker for Amazon will keep an eye on prices for you to make sure you’re the first to see the best deals.

• Credit Card Points/Discounts: Credit cards can encourage overspending, but when used carefully and within budget, offer certain advantages. For example, store-specific credit cards often offer special discounts, kickbacks and coupons for cardholders. Just think how you could double up on the savings by using some of the above tools, as well as by purchasing with a card with added bonuses. Remember though, that any savings you earn will quickly be eaten up if you pay interest charges. To avoid this trap, never use a credit card unless you can pay the entire balance in full each month. Also, think very carefully about opening a new account, as this can negatively affect your credit.

Tips to Keep Clothes Looking Their Best in Winter

Wine and Wings? Getting Creative for the Big Game

(StatePoint) Winter is dirty, and unfortunately, all that slush, salt and mud coincides with the use of the delicate and expensive part of your wardrobe, from wool and cashmere sweaters and scarves to swanky party wear.

(StatePoint) Everyone enjoys a hearty spread of comfort food for the big game. The range of flavors and textures in these dishes tend to run the gamut from salty, spicy, and meaty, to creamy, crunchy, and cheesy, making beer the natural pairing. However, if your drink of choice is wine, finding the right selection can be tricky.

But you can keep your clothes looking their best this winter, without breaking the bank at the dry cleaners, using the following tips: • Use garment bags: Get a head start on looking your best by ensuring your clothes look good before you even put them on for the day. Store suits, dresses, sweaters and other delicate items in garment bags to keep them safe from dust, moths and other closet hazards at home and when traveling. • Waterproof: On wet days, consider wearing waterproof shoe covers and tucking your pants into them to protect shoes, as well as the hems of your pants, from puddles and slush.

Sauvignon Blanc is very food-friendly, particularly when paired with many game day favorites like nachos, guacamole, salsas and chicken with some heat. Those from the Marlborough region of New Zealand, such as Infamous Goose Sauvignon Blanc 2017 (SRP $14.99), are crisp, with bright citrus and cool herbal flavors, and would pair well with the majority of dishes on your table. The reason this wine is such a refreshing selection, is that the Sauvignon Blanc grape is grown in relatively cool climates for a slow ripening period, which intensifies the flavors in the fruit. If you enjoy wings, finding a wine pairing for your feast will be your biggest challenge due to the range of toppings -- from bold-flavored spices to thick, mouth-coating sauces.

• At-home dry cleaning: Slash your dry cleaning expenditures by up to 90 percent and skip the hassle and harsh chemicals by opting for at-home dry cleaning using your own dryer. With the right product, it will be an effective way to safely and thoroughly clean your special care clothes at home.

Try serving Lemon Pepper Wings alongside a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. With its vibrant aromas of fresh lemons, limes, green apple, Thai basil and a touch of floral honey, it is a delicious pairing with this bright dish. When served chilled, the cooling herbal notes in the wine will also help to temper the seasoning.

For no fading, shrinking or stretching of your winter weather gear like scarves, hats, sweaters and more, consider using Dryel, a quick three step process which works in the convenience of your dryer in as little as 15 minutes. The heat of the dryer activates a cleaning solution to release a steam that removes body soils and odors from clothes, and a fabric protection bag maintains the optimal balance of cleaning agents and heat, allowing the steam to work thoroughly through the clothes, and then slowly vents the vapors out of the bag and dryer.

Ingredients:

• Act fast: When clothes get soiled, it’s important to act fast, particularly when dealing with salt and slush- related stains, which can be difficult to treat. The sooner you deal with stains, the greater the likelihood you’ll be able to restore your clothing to mint condition.

• Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 375 degrees F. • Stir lemon pepper and lemon juice into 1/4 cup melted butter, set aside. • Fry the chicken wings in hot oil until no longer pink at the bone and the juices run clear, about 8 minutes. An instant-read thermometer inserted near the bone should read 165 degrees F. • After cooking, toss hot wings in lemon butter mixture, coating all sides. Serve immediately.

• Landing area: Create a mud room. This can be just a few square feet of space by the entrance to your home and ideally located near the washer and dryer for quick transfer of clothes that need to be laundered. This is also the place to immediately remove boots and outerwear to avoid tracking mud into your home. This winter, protect your wardrobe from seasonal elements. New tools and old tricks can help your favorite winter gear survive the season in great condition.

• 2 cups oil, or as needed • 1/4 cup butter melted • 1/2 tablespoon lemon pepper • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 12 chicken wings Directions

From high-end cuisine to your Sunday football spread, a carefully selected Sauvignon Blanc can be served at any occasion. This season, surprise your guests with a delicious pairing of wine and wings.

How to Keep Dogs Safe During Cold Weather Walks (StatePoint) Make winter a wonderland for dogs by ensuring they’re safe when temperatures drop. While dogs have fur coats, they can still get too cold in the snow, frigid temperatures, and severe storms. Particularly at risk are dogs that are short-legged, older, or sick, say the dog-walking experts at Wag! For winter dog safety tips and to find dog walkers in your area, visit wagwalking.com. This winter, take precautionary measures to keep dogs healthy and happy, no matter what the weather brings.

Ramseur Community 3 Easy Ways to Simplify Your Holidays

4 Reasons to Start Your New Year’s Resolution Early

(StatePoint) It can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the busyness of the holiday season -- from perfecting your home décor to searching for gifts for everyone on your list to creating a delicious holiday menu.

(StatePoint) Chances are, if you’re contemplating a New Year’s resolution, shedding those extra pounds is at the top of your list, according to a Marist Poll.

To help simplify the holidays, Dollar General is offering easy tips, so you can spend more time enjoying the most magical time of the year.

Deck the Halls Get festive this season by creating a holiday wonderland in your home. Pick a color theme like red and green or blue and silver -- whatever best fits your taste. Carry the theme throughout your home as you decorate the tree, holiday table, mantle and gifts. Consider adding a wreath to greet guests as soon as they arrive, as well as candles. With varieties like salted caramel and amber spice, those from Dollar General’s private brand trueliving will capture the scents of the season. Small touches like a table runner or a floral centerpiece can also make your home feel like the perfect holiday escape during this busy season.

Holiday Meal Prep Cooking for a big crew can certainly be stressful. This year, use digital recipes to help you plan for the big event. Holiday sweets are always a favorite, so consider gifting your favorite desserts. If you plan to spend a lot of time prepping for a big holiday party or just a special dinner for your family, don’t forget the snacks to tide everyone over as you await the main course. For snacking you can feel great about, consider wholesome choices like roasted almonds or granola with less sugar.

Gift-Giving

But the best time to make a weight loss commitment is sooner rather than later, according to Dr. Pamela Peeke, chair of the Jenny Craig Science Advisory Board, who is sharing four good reasons to make a pre-New Year’s resolution. Here are her insights to consider, and, if you add the help of Jenny Craig’s Rapid Results, you can lose up to 16 pounds in the first four weeks (average weight loss was 11.6 pounds for those who completed the studies), making it a great way to start an early weight loss resolution. 1: You’ll Love Your Holiday Photos. Whether work party snapshots or the chronicling of special moments spent with family and friends, the holidays are loaded with photo ops. But how often have you avoided pictures because you didn’t feel good about being in front of the camera? “A common refrain we hear from members is that they avoided having pictures taken of themselves because they weren’t happy with their weight,” says Carrie Elkins, division manager for Jenny Craig Anywhere.

The holidays are the perfect time to gather with friends and loved ones to exchange presents in celebration of the season. If you’re worried about finding something affordable for everyone, consider shopping at a discount retailer, like Dollar General. With deals throughout the store on picture frames, books, candles, coffee mugs and more, you can treat everyone on your list without breaking the bank. Plus, they are offering an instant 25 percent savings on any qualifying toy purchase of $75 or more through December 24, 2018. By downloading the store’s app, you can access DG Digital coupons. New customers automatically receive a digital coupon for $1 off their first purchase of $1.01 or more.

By making a commitment now, you can feel healthier and more confident during the holidays -- and have the photos to remember those moments.

Don’t forget the giftwrap! Get creative with your gift trimmings by choosing a unique theme for each person on your list. With so many wrapping paper, gift bag and ribbon options, you can make every gift as special as the person receiving it.

“Motivation is key when it comes to preparing the psyche for any important behavior change,” says Peeke.

This season, keep your sights on the essentials. Simplify your shopping by creating a signature theme for home décor, finding deals on gifts for everyone on your list, and baking up something easy and delicious for the whole crew. Plan ahead this year and enjoy the extra time celebrating the season with friends and family.

Ph 336-795-0054 / Cell 336-404-9791

2: You’ll Be More Proactive and Procrastinate Less. Let’s face it: If you know you want to lose weight but are waiting until January to start, you may just be delaying the inevitable. Waiting can set you up for procrastination, and procrastination can actually be harmful, according to the Association for Psychological Science, causing people higher levels of stress and lower well-being. Resolve to start losing weight now before the holiday madness begins and while you have the drive.

3. Starting Now Means a Different Resolution in January. Beginning your weight loss journey now can give you the confidence to tackle a different resolution in January. So, make a new New Year’s resolution! Use the motivation gained by following through on your weight loss goal to fuel your next challenge. 4. The Time is Right. For many Americans, the holiday season starts with Halloween. That’s three months of potential overindulgence. In fact, the average American starts to gain weight around Thanksgiving, with weight gain peaking around the December holidays or the New Year and it can take up to five months to lose it, according to Cornell University’s Food & Brand Lab. If you can adopt healthy habits before the holidays, you may just counteract these effects to gain less or even maintain your weight during the holidays. So instead of waiting until 2019 to start making changes, get a head start on your resolution and your journey to better health.

Keeping Your Health on Track During the Indulgent Holiday Season (StatePoint) The holiday season can be an indulgent one, full of cookies, candies, heavy meals and eggnog. While no one wants to rein in the fun during the merriest time of year, there are simple ways to keep your health on track during this indulgent holiday season. • Stick to Routines. To the best of your ability during this hectic time of year, attempt to stick to routines that promote wellness. Set a bedtime and honor it. Hit the gym. Meditate. Do whatever it is that keeps you grounded and feeling your best. • Drink Up. Many people associate dehydration with the warmer months. But in winter weather it can be especially easy to forget to stay wellhydrated, especially when you’re indulging in alcoholic beverages at all those holiday parties. Remember, water doesn’t need to be the only source of hydration you think about this season. Soups and purees made from hearty winter vegetables, as well as citrus fruits do the trick, too, and their nutritional properties can help keep you healthy in winter.

makeover to all your favorite holiday recipes, including glazes and sauces for meat and poultry, cocktail recipes, and of course baked treats. • Make Substitutions. Other healthful substitutions you can make this holiday season include topping pies with Greek yogurt instead of cream, using apple sauce in place of oil and nut flour instead of white flour in baking, and serving vegetable mash as an alternative to mashed potatoes. • Be Mindful. The holiday party circuit can be dangerous when it comes to making nutritious choices. When you enter a party with a buffet set-up, it can be tempting to reach for the richest foods first. Before indulging in the canapes and Swedish meatballs, try filling up a plate with crudité first. While you’re doing so, get a good look at all the options available. This way, you’ll be more likely to savor choice items you’ll truly enjoy. A joyful holiday season doesn’t mean you must pack on pounds or feel under the weather. By keeping your health on track throughout this indulgent time of year, you can start 2019 with your best food forward.

• Keep Things Organically Sweet. Staying on track doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the sweetness of the season. Instantly boost the flavor of your favorite meals with organic honey. One great option is Organic Honey In The Raw. USDA Organic Certified and Non-GMO Project Verified, it’s made from pure nectar collected from exotic wildflowers found in the remote Caatinga region of northeast Brazil. The hand-harvested, sustainable honey is raw (never heated above 117 degrees) and unfiltered, so it retains the benefits of bee pollen.

And just one tablespoon of organic raw honey provides the right amount of sweetness and flavor for any dish or drink, including year-round staples like oatmeal, yogurt, tea, and more. You can also consider giving a honey
