New Town Brochure Underway!

Part of the funds from our NC STEP Grant will be used to print a Liberty Brochure / Directory that will be placed at numerous locations throughout Randolph County and surrounding area to attract visitors to Liberty. The chair person for this committee is Carol Wall of Awesome Finds. This brochure will showcase information such as, About The Area, Festival & Events, Local Dining, Distinctive Shopping, Things To Do, Historical and Services. A map of the area will also be included to help locate all the great things in Liberty. We are planning to have 5,000 copies printed. Local businesses will get some but they are planned to go out to local tourist spots and be on hand to mail out to people that call and inquire about Liberty or people who are new to the area. Local Businesses can get their establishment or service listed in the directory for $20. A very inexpensive investment to have exposure to 5000 potential customers. You say, if we got a grant why are we having to pay. Well, the NC Step Grant pays for the first year printing and creation of the brochure/directory which will be out this year. In order to print next years, we need to have money on hand for the coming year. So the fees collected will go into an account for the 2015 printing. That way we always have fund on hand to get things started. Okay community this is where we need you. You will be seeing in February forms coming around for you to fill out if you want to be listed in the brochure/directory. So be on the lookout. We are shooting to have them start hitting the streets around Feb 12 and are requesting them returned by March 12. In addition community, we need volunteers to help get these forms out and collected. There is a . lot of data to collect and we need volunteers. If you have a few hours you would like to offer, contact Carol at 622-6223 or Liberty Chamber at 622-4937.

Spring Planting is Near: Join the Arbor Day Foundation in February & Get 10 Free Redbud Trees

!

Joining the Arbor Day Foundation is an ideal way to get in the mood for spring planting. Anyone from North Carolina who joins the Foundation in February 2014 will receive 10 free Eastern redbud trees to plant when the weather turns warm. The free trees are part of the nonprofit Foundation's Trees for America campaign."Redbuds will help beautify North Carolina for many years to come," said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. "They will also add to the proud heritage of North Carolina's existing Tree City USA communities.” The Tree City USA program has supported community forestry throughout the country for more than 35 years. The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between March 1 and May 31, with enclosed planting instructions. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow, or they will be replaced free of charge.

Members also receive a subscription to the Foundation's colorful bimonthly publication, Arbor Day, and The Tree Book, which contains information about planting and care. To become a member of the Foundation and receive the free trees, send a $10 contribution to TEN FREE EASTERN REDBUD TREES, Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Avenue, Nebraska City, NE 68410, by February 28, 2014, or visit arborday.org/february.

A small but powerful movement called "cash mobs" continues to generate incredible momentum for small businesses. These organic efforts have begun to sprout up in small towns across America, and their popularity continues to grow in the national consciousness.! Cash mobs can create a positive impact on small businesses. The cash mob is inspired by the "flash mob" trend, in which rehearsed, organized dance groups apparently pop up out of nowhere. The dancers simply look like regular folks at regular places, such as malls and parks. At a predetermined time, the dancers start their performance, much to the delight and enjoyment of the surrounding onlookers. The flash mob appears spontaneous, but was actually generated by through lots of hard work, preparation and practice. A cash mob operates in a similar way. A grassroots campaign organizes a group of people to support a local business. At a predetermined time, they show up with cash in hand to support that business by buying its products and services.! Cash mobs are fueled by social media, such as Facebook and Twitter. The campaigns originated with an idea by Chris Smith, a blogger from Buffalo, New York, who flipped the concept of Groupon and Living Social on its head. Most small businesses saw a huge uptick in business when they offered deals on the social coupon sites, such as Groupon and Living Social. Smith wondered why people needed a discount to support businesses; as it turned out, they did not.! With just a little online coaxing, Smith assembled a group of people who met at a local business with cash in hand, ready to support its products. The event was successful, and the idea spread. All across Facebook and Twitter, people across the country began using social media to promote cash mobs, visiting a local business on a given day and time, giving that business an incredible shot in the arm. An army of customers arrives as a complete and total surprise, cash in hand, ready to buy products and services. Like most social media campaigns that find traction, local media got involved and helped the idea to spread.! Small businesses all over America have seen cash mobs pop up and typically double their normal sales in a given day. This buy-local movement supports small businesses, community relationships and helps draw people together. It is a true win-win for all parties involved. While it may not burn as many calories as a flash mob, its importance to the economy and its operation as a lifeline for struggling businesses makes it a worthwhile endeavor.! Flu Epidemic Strikes NC

44 people dead as of January 30, 2014 due to the flu. This year the flu is unlike any other in the way that it is attacking the systems of young and middled aged adults, instead of the more common elderly demographic the flu usually inhabits. Its outbreak is expected to climb in the upcoming weeks for the simple fact the flu seems to climb during the time periods of January and February. So please take precautions and come get your flu shot. Currently the Randolph County Health Department is out of flu shots along with many other places in the Randolph County area. However here at Wells Health and Wellness we have a limited supply left and would be happy to accommodate on a first come first serve basis. We use a dead flu virus that builds your immune system. Liberty’s Rosenwald School

What does the Sears and Roebuck Company have in common with Liberty? Julius Rosenwald, the CEO of the Sears, Roebuck, and Company in the early 1900s, helped fund the construction of schools for African American children in the South. One school was constructed right here in Liberty! The Rosenwald Schools, as they became known, were first devised by Booker T. Washington who approached Julius Rosenwald to assist in funding the betterment of African American education and building projects in the Tuskegee, Alabama. In 1917, Rosenwald placed funds in his philanthropic foundation for the purpose of building schools for African American children as interest in the project grew and demand increased. From 1917 through the 1930s, over 5,000 schools were constructed across the South. When Liberty’s two-room school house for African American students burned in 1927, money from the Julius Rosenwald Fund was used to construct a brick school. $1,000 from the Rosenwald Fund went to the construction of what was called a “four-teacher type” of building. The image with this article is of the design and floor plan for the “four-teacher type” of school, and while Liberty’s building was made of brick, it appears to have been shaped like this plan. Several publications of plans were made by the Rosenwald Fund for community schools, and this particular design is found on the History South website (http://www.historysouth.org /schoolplans.html), and was first published in 1924. To see a photo of Liberty’s school, visit Fisk University’s archives’ search engine for the Rosenwald School project here: http://rosenwald.fisk.edu/?module=search Do you remember the Liberty School? Do you have any photographs of the Liberty School? Please share your memories with us if you do! We are closed for the year and will reopen in May 2014. By: Barbara Dunn Swanson Extension Agent, 4-H Youth Development

!

Well it is the start of another year and that means that families and youth may be looking for a new adventure! Why not let that adventure be 4-H? Now is the perfect time to begin a local 4-H club in your neighborhood.A 4-H club is a wonderful way for youth to make new friends, learn new skills and develop leadership and citizenship potential. 4-H is the largest out of school youth organization in the United States with over 7 million youth members. There is Cooperative Extension staff responsible for 4-H programs in every county and city in every state in the United States. Whether you live in a city, suburb or rural area, there's something for you in 4-H.

!

"I Pledge my Head to clearer thinking,

my Heart to greater loyalty,

my Hands to larger service,

and my Health to better living,

for my club, my community, my country,

and my world."

!

The pledge tells what 4-H is all about. 4-H has as its goal the four-fold development of youth: Head, Heart, Hands and Health. The 4-H pledge was adopted in 1927. 4-H empowers youth to reach their full potential, working and learning in partnership with caring adults. Volunteer leaders and club member share fellowship in 4-H club settings. Volunteers encourage youth to choose projects, and to study and learn about things that are of interest to them. Parents and youth together with 4-H club leaders design the best possible learning environment for all club members."To Make The Best Better"; this is our 4-H motto and it was adopted at about the same time as the 4-H Club Pledge. Its intent is to inspire young people to continue to learn and grow, to make their best efforts better through participating in educational experiences. Youth develop self-confidence as they build skill and ability in project areas. Youth who take pride in their work carry that pride over into other areas of their life as well!

!

As 4-H clubs are developed, leaders practice something we call “Learn By Doing”. This phrase sums up the educational philosophy of the 4-H program. Young people learn best when they are involved in their learning. The intent is to do, reflect, and apply.

!

4-H helps young people recognize the connection between independence and responsibility, for decisions made and action taken. Being involved in a successful 4-H club means that members learn to set priorities, and manage their time so that they can achieve results! If the 4-H program sounds like something you would like to explore, give us a call at: Liberty 218-4000; Archdale / Trinity, 819-3000, and Asheboro, 318-6000. 4H is open to girls and boys ages 519 without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin or disability. 4-H is a United Way Agency.

Dear Dr. Don,! I am a 59 year old female and have been reading in the news about how dangerous the flu is this year. I have not gotten the flu shot yet, but since it is February and flu season is almost over, should I even worry about getting vaccinated? Also, I have been seeing adds for the shingles vaccine and wondered if you think I should consider getting. I’ve heard that it is very expensive.! You are correct about the flu virus and it can be dangerous. Most of the time it is not deadly, but it can still cause great misery and hospitalization. This year there have been more reported cases of death than normal and since it is still flu season (can last as late as May), you would still benefit from getting the vaccine. I highly recommend getting the flu shot!!!! Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox, varicella zoster. The earliest symptoms of shingles include headache, fever, and just not feeling well. Since the symptoms are so general, many times it is not diagnosed properly. After a few days, pain, itching, oversensitivity of the skin, tingling, pricking, or numbness of the skin, and occur. The pain associated with shingles may be mild to extreme in the affected areas. Sufferers usually describe the pain as stinging, tingling, aching, numbing or throbbing, and occasionally quick stabs of agonizing pain. The rash usually occurs on the torso, but can appear on the face, eyes or other parts of the body. The rash usually occurs in a stripe-like pattern that is limited to one side of the body. Later, the rash forms small blisters while the fever and pain may continue. The painful blisters eventually darken as they fill with blood and crust over. Usually the crusts fall off and the skin heals, but sometimes, scarring and discolored skin remain. I have seen some patients experience pain for months and even years in more severe cases.! The good news is there is a way to reduce your chances of getting shingles in the form of a vaccine called ZOSTAVAX®. ZOSTAVAX® is a live attenuated (weakened) virus vaccine for prevention of herpes zoster (shingles) in individuals 50 years of age and older. ZOSTAVAX® is not used in the treatment of shingles or shingles related pain once the patient’s outbreak begins or during. More insurance companies now cover the vaccine as they have discovered it is cheaper to pay for the vaccine versus all of the office visits and medications that can occur with a shingles outbreak. I have seen co-pays as low as $0 to no coverage at all. If your insurance doesn’t cover the vaccine, the price is usually around $250-$300. Even if your insurance doesn’t cover the vaccine, I would seriously consider getting it if you can afford. Once the outbreak has occurred, most shingles sufferers would gladly pay the full price of the vaccine versus the pain, sleepless nights, doctor visits, and subsequent medicines that follow to help give comfort. North Carolina recently passed a law allowing pharmacists to administer the vaccine without a prescription, however I would talk with your primary care practitioner before getting the vaccine. Side effects of the vaccine are usually mild, but as with any drug, there are risks involved. ZOSTAVAX® won’t completely eliminate the risk of a shingles outbreak, but it will reduce the chances of one.

GRAND CANYON “Part 2 What you don't know CAN hurt you ! ! There are a few good reasons that a Permit is required to hike overnight in the Grand Canyon. The rangers must know your route, the place you will spend the night, and when you will be coming out of the canyon. YOU must know these same things. Not knowing CAN and will hurt you. Many die in the canyon each year from not knowing, even with their permit hanging on their backpack in clear view. We had trail maps, but the canyon is so big that it did not seem to match in distance or route. The camps were much farther apart than that, we all agreed. People are lured into taking shortcuts and becoming lost. When you are lost in a hole that is 1,000 cubic miles big, you are lost. "It just couldn't be this far, something must be wrong", was said more than once, as was "Are we there yet?" Two of our days were 18 mile days, while our steepest, hardest uphill climb was about 10 miles. That 10 mile day we climbed the same amount as a 346 story building. We used every speck of sunlight every day, getting to our camp site most often in the dark. ! ! Not knowing where you will spend the night CAN hurt you. There are NOT many places where you COULD even lie down safely. Getting to the designated camp is a must, and the law, in the canyon. Water is hard to come by in the canyon, and it changes all the time. There are a few places known to have water most of the time. Not knowing where water is CAN hurt you. This brings us to how our packs grew to be 8-12 pounds heavier. Yes, on that 346-story-climb-day we had to carry enough water for two days of cooking and drinking. Here is another place where not knowing can hurt you. Do you know how much water it takes to stay in good condition every day? Do you know how much water you need to drink when hiking 10 miles uphill? Well, we took no chances, using the extra water bottles we brought just for this day, we added that weight to our already bulging packs. They GREW to be as much as 45-55 pounds. This weight was the most that any of us had carried, even in all that training. Carrying this water to the 8,000 foot North Rim was only half the problem. It was 19 degrees that night on the rim, and the water froze even though we kept it in our tents. In the morning the stoves were so cold that they would not heat water, so we packed up camp and moved to lower altitudes before drinking and eating. We did not know that the stoves would fail in low temps, and if we had planned to spend more days at that altitude, not knowing that COULD have hurt us. Now we know. ! ! Since we could not take much in our packs considering we would have to carry it every step of the way uphill and down for 75 miles total, we packed layers of clothes to wear. It seemed somebody was all the time putting something on or taking something off. Sometimes we took a lot of stuff off. In the floor of the canyon on those 18 mile days, the temperature could reach nearly 80 degrees, in November. We had layers for rain, and crampons (metal spikes to put on your feet ) for ice. We did not know what we would experience, but had to be ready and carry it all the same.! ! We met two groups of interest on the trail. As we struggled ever nearer to the top of the 8,000 feet, there were two women hiking toward us. One, we learned, had never had a backpack on before that day, while the other one was an experienced packer. "There is trail damage ahead, the monsoons washed out the trail", one told us. "You'll be ok if you don't let your pack swing when you go across the rope", she continued. She had our attention! No trail, and a rope to pull yourself, and the heaviest pack you have ever carried, across some chasm for how far? Then came the most amazing information of all. The inexperienced woman was 71 and the woman sharing the information about the rope, was 76 years old! We did make it across the ledge with the rope, and no packs got to swinging. The other group was a little family, two Gregory's and a mom. We learned that little g was only 4 years old and was on his second trip in the canyon. He walked every step himself, with energy to spare, and carried his foot pj's in his own pack. His first trip at 3 and a half ended in his having to be carried some. He was never bored and never complained. Now that's a real kid.! ! If you don't know about the mules, it CAN hurt you. They have the right of way, hands down. YOU get out of the way, and become as small as you can. If you can get off the trail, get off of it, and fast. About 12 in a pack will walk by with their precious cargo of folks. Those folks are brave, and probably feel as tired when they get to Phantom Ranch as we do at the end of a day. The mules carry people, carry supplies to far away trails that need repair, carry food and equipment into Phantom Ranch to feed, house and care for all those folks riding in on other mules. They even carried some stuff in for us, since we stopped at the Phantom Ranch canteen to eat some of it. It has been a life-long dream to experience a cold drink, and food there. Amazing, right in the middle of absolutely nowhere (we know because we walked there) is this unbelievable place. A simple place, but ever so appreciated by the trail-weary souls. We arrived at our next campsite really late and in the dark after that indulgence of time, but we all agreed it was worth it. ! ! Not knowing who you are with CAN hurt you. Lee, Novella, Sam, Sonja and Teana knew each other very well, which is critical when life is on the line. We absolutely cared and looked after each other through a whole year of training, with all sorts of troubles and trials. Then we did the same on this journey deep into the canyon, but more importantly deep into ourselves. What we learned is this. We really, really like each other, even better now that we have had this extraordinary experience together. I guess it might be called love, since that is when you care for others and love them as you love yourself. What a journey this was, outward and inward. Thanks for sharing it by reading it. Four Million People Suffer from Shoulder Pain. Do You? Do you suffer from stiff or achy shoulders? Does it hinder your day to wake up in the morning and feel that soreness? If so, you are not alone. Approximately four million people in the United States report shoulder pain. Because shoulder pain is so prevalent, Randolph Hospital’s Human Motion Institute is partnering with nationwide renowned Joe Mullins, M.Ed., LAT, ATC, ACI, to host “Shoulder to Shoulder,” a free event to address issues surrounding painful shoulders. The event will be held on Tuesday, February 18 at Randolph Hospital from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Mullins, with Deep River Rehabilitation, will be discussing common causes and treatments of shoulder pain and when medical treatment should be sought. The most common causes of painful shoulders are trauma, repetitive motion injuries, sports-related injuries or general wear and tear over time. Chronic overuse is the main reason why people develop shoulder problems. The Human Motion Institute at Randolph Hospital is a comprehensive orthopedic service provided by expert physicians specializing in cuttingedge procedures which are producing positive results. With a patient satisfaction score of 99 percent, the Human Motion Institute at Randolph Hospital is seeing more and more patients, who are happily returning to their everyday lives within a matter of weeks after surgery. The Daniel Plan “Message From Pastor”

wanted to take a few moments to update you on the vision God has given to me in regards to
I"The Daniel Plan" at FFC. Please read & understand this and put it into practice in your life &

ministry. I sense that since what we're learning from this plan is so radical for us and the people we lead, that God wants us to read and comprehend the book FIRST and then seek to do the 40 Days of planned out eating & exercise AFTERWARD. What will that look like for us?

FIRST, we need to read the book for ourselves and allow it's truths to penetrate our hearts. I would like for you to have as much as of the book read as possible by next Tuesday (2/4). NOTE: I do not want us focusing on the eating plans, what we can/can't eat, how we're going to do this, etc. during this time. We are simply reading the book and allowing God's Truth to penetrate our hearts.

SECOND, I want us to use iGROW to EDUCATE the people of FFC on the fundamentals of "The Daniel Plan". It will go as follows:

WEEK 1 (2/4):(The Essentials),

WEEK 2 (2/11): (Faith),

WEEK 3 (2/18): (Food),

WEEK 4 (2/25): (Fitness),

WEEK 5 (3/4): (Friends),

WEEK 6 (3/11):(Focus),

FINALLY, on March 11th (the last night of iGROW), I'm going to invite everyone who's willing to embark on the 40 Day Journey of "The Daniel Plan". I will be asking them to join us in following the food & fitness plan for 40 Days (March 12th - April 21th). That will be when we encourage them to "buddy up" with someone else for accountability. That will be when we actually change the way we eat and exercise.

!

Again, that means we don't need to worry between now and March 4th whether or not we can eat Oreos or not. We don't need to worry about buying special foods and doing unique things. We are to spend our time between now and March 11th, educating ourselves and others so that we can all hit the ground running on March 12th. So actually our "Daniel Plan" emphasis will be 80+ days... not 40 Days. Hopefully, it will be a lifestyle change.

My Daniel Plan Update! I am so excited what all has changed in my life just this month and I have only scratched the surface. I have lost 12 pounds and feel the best I have in a long time. Totally have not have heartburn in three weeks. Yeah Jesus. What is exciting about the Daniel Plan is that it is a new way of life. It has helped me re-wire all my thinking of how and why I do stuff. Several have asked about what to expect during the six week series. Well just come and learn. We are not starting the challenge under we are done with the study. Our goal is to just give you knowledge to have. Then when God says now is when you need to start changing your life you have the skills. A key thought is we put junk in body through our ears, eyes and mouth. Its time to clean up the waste land (our body). Spring cleaning our body. Hope to see you. We changed dates due to the snow , so no one missed nothing. See you there.

Batter Up Athletes and Weekend Warriors

Attention athletes and weekend warriors, the Human Motion Institute at Randolph Hospital is partnering with Asheboro’s local batting cages, Game On to provide shoulder screenings, a presentation and several demonstrations at a free event on Saturday, February 15.Approximately 45 percent of teen pitchers experience shoulder pain or discomfort during their baseball or softball season. Shoulder pain is an indication that some part of the body is having to work harder than it should, meaning it’s not working as efficiently or effectively as it is should. Because shoulder pain is so common, Randolph Hospital’s Human Motion Institute is partnering with Joe Mullins, M.Ed., LAT, ATC, ACI, to host “Put Your Shoulder Into It,” a free event to address issues surrounding shoulder pain. The event will be held on Saturday, February 15 at Game On, located at 260 Ross Street in Asheboro. Mullins is a shoulder specialist who works with Deep River Rehabilitation in the athletic training division. He will be discussing common causes and treatments of

shoulder pain and when medical treatment should be sought. The most common causes of painful shoulders are trauma, sports injuries and general wear and tear over time. Chronic overuse is the main reason why people develop shoulder problems. Mullins is a licensed athletic trainer with over 20 years of experience in clinical and academic settings. He specializes in treating “overhead” athletes, performing functional orthopedic evaluations, analyzing movement and designing performance-enhancement programs. He is an expert on topics such as the shoulder complex and performance enhancement programs, as well as: - a nationally-known speaker on the shoulder and overhead athletes;- a consultant with medical staffs for multiple Major League Baseball teams and

colleges;- has unparalleled expertise in blending healthcare and sports performance. If you are interested in attending this event, please call the community events desk at (336) 633-7788 to register. Registration is also available online by going to www.randolphhospital.org and clicking on the “Events” tab.

Jesus, Our Valentine

When: Every Saturday 11am to 12:30pm Where: Edwards Grove Baptist Church 214 S Foster St, Liberty

This FREE Event Is For Everyone

1 JOHN 4:10

In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. (NKJV) On Valentine’s Day we try to think of new and creative ways to show our love to our spouses, children, and others who are dear to us. Hearts, flowers, cards with cute sayings, heart shaped cakes, balloons–there are all kinds of ways to let these special folks know just how much they mean to us. The greatest demonstration of love, of course, came from God the Father when He sent His only Son from the splendor of Heaven to the limitations of earth to become our Savior. In essence, Jesus is God’s Valentine to us. Sweet thought, isn’t it? Don’t lose sight of God’s great gift of love this Valentine’s Day! Lord Jesus, thank You for Your immeasurable gift of love that brought me my salvation. Thank You that not just on Valentine’s Day, but every day of the year You demonstrate Your love for me in a multitude of ways. I love you, Lord.
