Calling All Community With Scouts Lets Help Out With Scouting For Food 2017
Dear Scouters, Each year, the Boy Scouts of America celebrates its anniversary in February by giving back to the community through the Scouting for Food campaign. The Scout Oath mentions “To help other people at all times” and four of the 12 points of the Scout Law are “helpful, friendly, courteous, kind” so service to our communities is of paramount importance to who we are as Scouts and Scouters. On February 4, 2017, Scouts all over the eight counties of the Old North State Council will hit the streets. Scouts will distribute door hangers that will request that residents prepare one or more bags of non-perishable food and hang them on their door the following Saturday, February 11th for the Scouts to pick up. Scouts will then deliver the collected food to food pantries, churches, and other locations around the Piedmont Triad. Each year, the Old North State Council collects between 70,000 and 80,000 pounds of food for the needy. Let’s try to exceed that this year and provide even more food for those who are in need of assistance. The goal in 2017 is to have every Scout unit in the Old North State Council participate in Scouting for Food. Even if your unit does not distribute door hangers, the Scouts and adults can still collect food from their chartered organization and deliver it to the nearest food pantry. Every bit of food collected helps those in need. It also helps the Scouts out by earning service hours which can count towards rank advancement and the unit’s Journey to Excellence! The council has developed a Leader’s Guide to help units plan and organize this campaign. Inside, you’ll find important contact information, tips, safety guidelines, important dates, food drop off locations, and more. We hope this will be a useful tool in your efforts to give back to the communities we serve. The Leader ’s Guide can be found online at: _____________________________ THANK YOU for participating in Scouting for Food. Let’s make a HUGE impact this year and collect as much food as possible. Our communities are counting on us to make a difference!

Hospice Offering Special Program for Grieving Spouses Hospice of Randolph County is glad to announce its 11th annual offering of the bereavement event entitled “Surviving Hearts”. This special program is designed for those who are grieving the loss of a spouse and correlates with the Valentine’s Day season. Dr. Rodney Otwell, Hospice Chaplain, commented on the program: “The loss of a life’s partner is unlike any other loss we will face in life. So much of our identity and personal history is wrapped up in the person to whom we commit to share our lives. When that person dies, we not only lose them, we lose a part of ourselves. The task of mourning well is doing the work necessary to rediscover who we are in light of such a significant loss.” Around Valentine’s Day, we understand that this time of year can be especially difficult for those who are experiencing grief from the loss of a spouse or partner. The evening will consist of an educational component as well as time for personal reflection and feedback from the group and facilitator. This special program is open to the public and will be held on Thursday, February 9 from 6:00pm – 7:30pm at the Hospice Educational Building at 416 Vision Drive, Asheboro. The event itself is FREE but there is a workbook that goes with the program that is $15. For more information and to register contact Hospice of Randolph County:(336) 672-9300.

The Greatest Demonstration By: Andy Clapp Tumultuous times are upon us. For nearly a decade, we have witnessed the uneasiness of the times, where demonstrations have escalated, where anger and fear have become tangible, where what remains is on fire and in ruins. Marches have distinguished one side from another, rallies whipping up the fury of many who lack self-control, and protests lacking peace as they are the manifestations of anger from within. Social media has become inundated with attacks and the profane words shouted have become the soundtrack for a generation unable to hear the song of a Savior. America has changed. We have decided to identify ourselves by who we voted for and by where we stand on hot button issues of the day. People are lumped into categories rather than seen as individual creations of the hand of God. The result is a devaluing of humanity, people no longer seen as eternal souls but rather are viewed as temporary means to an end. February is a month where the theme of love is prevalent throughout the four weeks of the month’s duration. Valentine’s Day sends people to the greeting card aisle and the jewelry store as we search for expressions of love. As we look for that authentic expression, our eyes are drawn to the greatest demonstration, and most effective, that humanity has ever witnessed. Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 NKJV)

We look at the cross and we see a demonstration. God’s love on display as the world watched on and the result was the salvation of those who accepted the gift that God offered through His Son Jesus Christ. This demonstration was based upon what we needed, the redemption that could not come through the work of our hands but could only result from the sacrifice of God. The cross, a place of brutality, resulted in grace and forgiveness, and rather than furthering a divide that existed, the separation between fallen man and a holy God, this demonstration bridged the gap that existed. The cross, a bridge that led from brokenness to holiness, injected hope and the message of the demonstration resonates to today. The greatest demonstration that we can make in our lives is to demonstrate the love for others that Christ showed on the cross. To show the hurting that the Healer has made a way for their redemption is an effort that will have an eternal impact. Rather than talking about the next demonstration on the streets of a city in our nation, we should point people to God’s demonstration on the cross, the expression of His love that unites creation to its’ Creator, the place where the individual finds true self-worth because the cross was for each of us.

I asked their daughter (Tonya Shoffner) and granddaughter (Sydney Shoffner) to share a glimpse into this this love story. Here is their spin.
“Always And Forever”

These two met over 58 years ago and shared their first kiss under an apple tree on Swannanoa avenue at the tender age of 16. They were married on July 23rd, 1961 and declared it was the hottest day of the year! To this day they still keep the sparks flying, they continue to give God all the glory and praise for keeping them together. Through trials, sickness, and hardships their secrets to staying in love is God first, respect, forgiveness, much laughter and MUCH prayer. From this union the two were blessed with 3 children, 4 grandchildren and 3 godchildren whom they love, support, and spoil consistently.

Another Great Love Story Of Liberty Janice and Shelly Patterson I have to many things to share that made me think of their love story , so I asked their daughter Kimberly Patterson Hall to share their story.
As he tells the story for the one thousandth time of how he first met Janice in 1954 at a local pool in Siler City, he assures us that love at first sight does in fact exist. Hoping to stall the dinner cleanup, everyone at the table listens intently as he continues. "She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen," he says, "and after that moment, life was never the same for either of us." They were married in a secret ceremony in Chesterfield, South Carolina, which was apparently the place to go in 1956 if you wanted to get married and didn't want anyone to know about it. He was the son of a grocery store merchant in Liberty and she was the daughter of the local barber in Chatham County. The following is a synopsis of the love story of Shelly Patterson and Janice White Patterson. Today they are both just returning home from Clapp's Nursing Home in Pleasant Garden, NC where they underwent a month's rehabilitation following a serious car accident. They are excited about returning home so they can get back to their daily breakfasts at "Ya'll Come Back" cafe. It is there that they meet with friends and neighbors and keep up with the comings and goings of the people of Liberty. Presently, their biggest fear is being separated and they fought vigilantly to be in the same room at the nursing home, to stay together even as their bodies grow older. Why is their story so important during this Valentine's season of love and happily ever afters? Because their story is is not only one of love but also one of perseverance, dedication, and sacrifice. Let's go back to 1956 as the happy couple came back from Chesterfield. They were determined to stay together no matter what their parents said; initially neither set of parents were very happy about the elopement. Janice was kicked out of school at Jordan Matthews HS because at that time married women were not allowed to go to school with unmarried ones. Life was very different in 1956. She eventually finished at Burlington Williams HS where she was allowed to enroll. Shelly attended Pfeiffer College for a semester, and did a short stint in the army, before everyone realized that he wasn't willing to do anything that took him away from Janice for long. He came back to Liberty where he went into the grocery business with his parents, Jack and Josephine Patterson at Jack's Meats and Groceries. She worked for Dr. Neal, the local dentist. Janice and Shelly had seven wonderful years together doing what young people did in the late 1950s. They lived in a tiny trailer near the rail road in town. They played bridge with friends, went water skiing, and sledding in the snow. Shelly loved fast cars, and going to the drive in. They took trips to the mountains and the beach. They both loved to travel, so Shelly learned to fly so they could go further even faster. They were constantly going and doing, always on the move. Love was grand! Then tragedy hit. Everything started out fine on that warm July day, Janice told Shelly that she was in pain with contractions so at 2:00 am they left excitedly for Moses Cone Hospital. They were going to have their first baby and were full of anticipation. As was the norm at that time, Shelly wasn't allowed to be in the delivery room so they had come to get him from the waiting room to let him see the baby. Before he even had time to let it all sink in, the nurses rushed to get Shelly for a very different reason. His beautiful wife, Janice, had a massive, life altering stroke while in the recovery room. The doctors gave her a zero chance of surviving. At that point Shelly did what any believer would do, he rushed to the hospital chapel and fell to his knees in prayer. When he tells the story to his child and grandchildren, he says that he made a promise to God on that day that if God would let her live, then he would look after her for the rest of his life. And he has. . Friendly and gregarious to a fault, Shelly did what he could to make Janice's life wonderful, even in her condition. At 23 years old, this once active, engaging woman was suddenly paralyzed on her left side; it effected her speech, and her ability to walk. She had no
Ph 336-795-0054 / Cell 336-404-9791
Volume 15 Issue 2
balance as a result of the stoke and was never able to walk again for the rest of her life. Also imagine, Shelly, a 25 year old young man who had to learn to change a diaper while simultaneously learning how to put panty hose and clothes on his paralyzed wife. He says helps if you look at life with a sense of humor. Shelly has always been the eternal optimist, and he had a way of making life fun for all those around him. He spoiled Janice rotten, giving in to pretty much whatever she wanted. Her motto was "eat dessert first," and she did. She was a bit of a daredevil and was up for whatever adventure Shelly suggested. They continued to travel and have fun for many years. You may know them, you may have seen them walking together around town in the 1970s and 80s, he behind her, walking for her as he held his arm around her waist. Nowadays, she has a "Stephen Hawking's" motorized wheelchair and he walks with the aid of a cane or walker. They are older and more frail, but no less in love. When he gazes at her, he still says, "isn't she the prettiest girl you have ever seen?" His complaint in the nursing home? "Can't they put our beds closer together, I can't even kiss her goodnight." She just laughs at him, shrugs her shoulders, and says, "what can you do with him?" The moral of this synopsis? Love isn't always easy. Sometimes life is tough. We all make choices, you can choose to be happy regardless of your circumstances. If you find someone to love who loves you right back, a lifetime of happiness can be yours. Just remember that hard times come, but as long as you stick together, are willing to forgive a multitude of sins and mistakes, and make good on the promise "til death do us part," then your love can last a lifetime. I have been an observer of this kind of love for all of my life. I know it exists because I have seen it in action first hand for I am that baby that pushed her way into the world on that hot July day. Story By Kimberly Patterson Hall.

Working up a sweat is good for your brain. Story By Dr Rhoda Gottfried Most people know that exercise is good for the body, but do know that it is equally beneficial for the brain? One need only google the term, “neurobiological effects of exercise on the brain”, to learn the multiple ways that exercise improves brain health. Wikipedia has a well written summary of these benefits. One of the things that exercise has been shown to do in studies is to increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). BDNF is a protein, made by the cells in the body, that promotes neuron (cells that make up the brain and spinal cord) and thereby brain health. Low BDNF levels has been linked to depression, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease. Treatments of depression including antidepressant medication and electroconvulsive therapy have been shown to increase BDNF levels. Exercise has also been shown to treat depression and this may be due in part to the increase in BDNF. Exercise increases BDNF and it increases neuroplasticity by means of increasing BDNF and by other mechanisms as well. Neuroplasticity means the ability of the brain to change and grow based on experience, and in effect to learn. Every thought, experience, and behavior, a person has is a connection of neurons in the brain of that person. As that person has certain thoughts over and over those neurons become more highly connected. When that person has a new thought, or experience that person connects neurons in a different way. Throughout life a person’s brain is changing and learning because the brain of that person is literally, physically changing and connecting in new ways. Exercise measurably improves the ability of the brain to make new connections and to have continued growth and learning. Alzheimer’s disease is an extreme example of a loss of ability for the brain to learn new things and make meaning of experiences by fitting it into the other connections of neurons in the brain. The brain of the person Contact with Alzheimer’s disease has lost neuroplasticity and cannot Wade Hardin connect in new ways to take in new information. Exercise (336)240-7925 seems to delay or prevent cognitive decline that may lead to Alzheimer’s disease as a person ages. re Another thing that improves brain health in response to exercise is the body’s reaction to stress. Stress is a term used a lot but may not mean the same thing to two different people. Stress means a threat, a danger either physically or psychologically. When facing a threat a person releases stress hormones. This rush of adrenaline and steroids can get the person out of a tight spot to survive. These hormones help a person to run fast or fight off something that is physically threatening. The body’s stress response Seeding Available unchecked and dysregulated as often happens with chronic unrelenting stress suppresses BDNF and dose damage to the brain. Exercise helps to regulate the stress response Seeding & Fertilizing and reduce elevated stress hormones between workouts. Pruning & Trimming This is not a comprehensive list of ways that exercise Irrigation Property Clean Up improves brain health, but these are some of the many ways Tree Removal that physical activity helps you live a happier more Bobcat & Dump Truck productive and aware life. The Bible says, “Go to the ant Pine Needles & Mulch thou sluggard, consider her ways and be wise.” Proverbs New Installations 6:6. Did you ever see an ant that was not moving? Old Building Renewed With Great Business I had the pleasure to spend an afternoon getting to know about an new business to Liberty and that would be HWY 49 Motorcycle and Auto Center that moved into the former Kustom Collision that is located at the intersection of Old 421 (Greensboro St) and HWY 49 (Fayetteville St.) It was so great to see an existing building being restored and renewed into a vibrant business. The owners Brian and Kelly Minnich are great new addition to the town of Liberty. They moved their business from closer to Ramseur to Liberty. They live close to Liberty and they believe in the theme (Shop And Support Local) and they are wanting to help with that. They are running a special to offer NC Vehicle State Inspection for only $25 to help the community out. Lowest price I have seen any where. They are running a car lot that is set with the theme (Buy Here Pay Here). They have on the lot financing and what even better they are 100% invested. What does that mean, you do not have to worry about a bank and have to be at their mercy. This business does their own loans. They are not knew to this as they have learned from Kelly’s father for he has run a vibrant business in this manner. Likewise Brian is not knew to this atmosphere. Brian shared with me he has loved working around vehicles since a kid and has 15 years at Crown Auto and has had this business for 5 years. They also have a turn key mechanic shop. They offer oil changes to tires which they get from East Coast Tires. They also can cover any of your mechanical maintenance or repair needs. They also can handle your motorcycle needs from a Harley Davidson with a certified Harley Davidson Mechanic , Brian Richardson. They use AMS oil to protect the warranty of the bike. They can handle any make or model bike. They also have a wash bay to give you that clean look. As you can see from the picture, you can see all the cool remodeling they have done to date and plan on doing more restoration. One find was the original brick wall behind sheetrock that they had local Louis Brady that painted their logo on the wall. They pulled the gravel out of a pit and found the original oil pit. The woodwork if so awesome inside the building. They are running another Feb Special, with a purchase of a vehicle you receive a $499 value for free warranty of 3 months/ 45,000 miles. Make a point to stop in and visit this great new business to Liberty. Liberty welcomes you.

REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE: 2017 POINT IN TIME COUNT FOR HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES The 2017 Point in Time Count for Randolph County will begin on January 25 at 6:00 p.m. and end on January 26 at 6:00 a.m. The purpose of the count, which is conducted in communities throughout the nation, is to try to ascertain how many people are “literally homeless” in our community. The count is coordinated by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), in conjunction with the Randolph County Housing Coalition, Inc. Individuals and programs that serve the homeless population in different capacities, regardless of whether they are affiliated with HUD, are asked to participate. Having accurate information on the extent of homelessness allows those serving this population to better manage their resources and provide assistance. This data can also help those agencies receive continued and enhanced program funding. “Literally homeless” is defined by HUD as follows: (1) Individual or family who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, meaning: (i) Has a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not meant for human habitation; (ii) Is living in a publicly or privately operated shelter designated to provide temporary living arrangements (including congregate shelters, transitional housing, and hotels and motels paid for by charitable organizations or by federal, state and local government programs); or (iii) Is exiting an institution where (s)he has resided for 90 days or less and who resided in an emergency shelter or place not meant for human habitation immediately before entering that institution. Please contact Debbie Cole, Executive Director, Christians United Outreach Center, at 336-625-1500 or debbiecuoc@triad.rr.com if you have questions or would like to help with this effort.
