Why Support Local
The reason so many people are supporting locally is simple: it works. Studies have shown the benefits of shopping with locally owned businesses instead of their chain-store competitors. Local shops typically invest back into the community by using local vendors, employing local people and keeping their profits close to home instead of shipping them to an out-of-town headquarters. It also results in revenue that supports the services and infrastructure in our own City. If you shop locally in your home town instead of traveling elsewhere to spend your money, you are not just supporting our businesses, you are supporting your local hometown. You Are Thanking Your Local Shops for Supporting the Local Community Liberty to Ramseur small businesses owners donate to most of the events that happen through the year here in your hometown– whether it’s a local church bazaar, one or more than one of our signature events, or a 5k run to raise money for a worthy cause – most of our businesses, open their cash drawers and checkbooks to help, with enthusiasm, knowing they are helping their community. Pure Enjoyment Another reason to shop locally is for the fun of it. The gift shops, coffee shops, museum shops and even the restaurants have unique gifts with a local flavor. And if you’re unhappy with the lack of service at many of the big, national chain stores, you may be pleasantly surprised at the personal attention you get by shopping with small businesses.
Liberty Leader Newspaper Thanks The Community For 15 Years
Stress Free This year why not be un- stressed, un-frenzied, or lacking road-rage by supporting local. Trade in the hustle and bustle of over-packed malls for a relaxing stroll through your favorite downtown business, visit your hometown streets from Liberty to Ramseur. The benefits of slowing things down over this year can improve your health, well-being and overall mood, especially when schedules are at their fullest. The less time you spend traveling great distances and drudging through hordes of shoppers, the more time you will be able to enjoy with your family around the fireplace. So maybe it’s time to focus less on leaving the area, and take advantage of the calming convenience of shopping local. Now That The Holiday Season Is Over what about the rest of the year? Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays and anniversaries are perfect occasions to give a gift or gift certificate from a local business or restaurant.

Fire Bring Love Out In Area Please pray for a Liberty family …, Micheal and Barbara Hiatt and their two daughters age 11 and 13 grade lost their home in December to an early morning fire on Wed Dec 28. Everyone escaped from the fire safe, even the pet bulldog with her new puppies. It is believed it started from a chimney fire. I live only a few blocks from their home and I ventured down to see what was going on. As I walked up I saw the fire fighters from Liberty and area fire departments were working to put out the blaze. Locals surrounded the Hiatts to offer comfort. It was amazing to see Liberty step up to offer support and help. This couple is best described as Liberty’s Love Birds. You always see Micheal and Barbara walking the neighborhood holding hands or just enjoying each others company on their front porch. I know their great love will get them through this tragedy. Now is where I am proud of my little home town of Liberty. Amanda Shores from Amanda’s Hair Salon and Sharon Carpenter of Arts Town and Country moved swiftly to work on getting them immediate needs. Both published list of items needed by the Hiatt's and they started receiving donation. They even with the help of Liberty Chamber Of Commerce to open up an account at Liberty Fidelity Bank that people can make monetary donations. The account is called “Michael and Barbara Hiatt Fire Fund. “ Even local eatery , Hurricane Jane’s , offered a month of meals to the Hiatt’s to help them through the tragedy. If you would like to know what the family is still in need for you can contact Amanda Shore at her hair salon at 336-207-7422.

Principal For A Day At Liberty Elementary School Story By Kevin Bowman
I was honored when I got the invite from Principal Kelli Harrell at Liberty Elem School, if I would consider being the principal for the day at my home town school. Without hesitation, I said I would love the honor. Shortly later I was contacted by Tim Moody, Public Information Officer with Randolph County School to explain it. Tim stated, “ Thank you for participating in "Principal for a Day" next week. Typically, we asks that school guests to arrive around 7:30 am (so that they can be there for the arrival of students) and stay through lunch. You are welcome to stay longer. If you prefer to work out your own schedule, that's fine. We understand you all have busy schedules and may need to tweak things somewhat. The PFAD agenda is simple - build relationships between school and community. The idea is to keep these school visits fun and informal. School guests will shadow the principal for the purpose of experiencing a typical school day. Principals should engage and involve their guests in the school day to whatever degree the two of you feel comfortable. Thank you! “ My day started out at 7am on a chilly morning as the principal stood and greeted bus riders as they came in and also the car riders. It was great to see the other staff working to help get kids into the school, but most of all the excitement they both shared to see each other. Following that I was allowed to participate and observe a mock school lockdown. A Randolph County Sheriff was on scene to go over and see if all things that could be done was being accomplished. I was overwhelmed at how fast the kids and staff worked on accomplishing this task. Parents and grandparents, you should rest assure that the Liberty ES has your kids extremely safe. From former mock drill practice these kids did an outstanding job along with the staff. From cameras and protocols that they have in place (which I can not share) this is one safe school. I love one of the signs I saw around the school. Liberty Bulldogs will Be safe, Act responsibly, Respect ourselves and others, and show Kindness to all. Which spells BARK! The Liberty School PTO is always on the scene to support our kids and the staff. This day was duty free day (which happens each month and the community, civic group or business can volunteer to do) where the staff does not have to watch the kids during lunch and they have a special meal provided for them. This day they had taco salad bar provided. This is not the only way you can help the PTO out. They also collect gifts that kids can get a chance to win by collecting Bulldog Bucks, which you get when you are noticed for doing extra ordinary things around school. The school is always needing volunteers in numerous areas. Contact the school office for a form to be filled out to become a volunteer. The first part of the day was the paper work and dealing with issues that came up as the principal. With only have a Asst Principal only a few hours a week due to funding, a lot of roles falls back on the principal. The fun part of the principals job was when we made our rounds through the class room. It was great to see the interaction between the principal and staff to the kids. I had an awesome time meeting so many kids I knew. One of my favorite rooms was the room comprised of numerous recyclable items the kids brought in for the learning lab. They use this are to tie in things like math and reading to the lab. They were working on their creative art of Thanksgiving turkeys. To conclude the day I got to sit in on the lead teachers meeting where all grade level teachers sit down to discuss what was working and changing in the class room. This was great to see the collaboration between all the staff. I love the new theme “Liberty School A Great Place To Learn”. If you get a chance to support the local school please do. They are very limited on their resources and time. They want the community be part of the school systems, whether its volunteering, donation or being part of the PTO. I am very proud to call Liberty Elementary School my hometown school. They are great resource for our kids. Thanks to all the staff and kids that gave me an overwhelming welcome and let me see a day in Liberty School.

As He Makes Us New
By: Andy Clapp The countdown is over and the ball has dropped in Times Square. A New Year is upon us and we have made the resolution that this year will be better than the last. Some have decided they will live healthier lives in 2017. Others have devoted to spend more time with their families this year. Goals that have long been tucked away are brought back out, dusted off, and are being pursued with a renewed passion. We say that we are going to make an impact in this New Year, our lives leading to something great. As we know, most resolutions fail to make it beyond the month of January, but the beginning of a New Year brings about a hope that anything is possible, instilling optimism in the mind and bringing new purpose to the soul. Many have bought a new weekly planner for this year, ready to squeeze everything possible into the next 365 days. The empty pages give us a chance to dream of what can be, what will be seen, and the joys that can be experienced. One of the greatest opportunities that this New Year brings is the chance to become what we have been designed to become. Before we drew our first breath, God had a plan for our lives. Today is our opportunity to have a redirection of life in Christ Jesus, to become new in Him. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV) The great resolution to be made is to become more like Christ in our lives. Laying aside the things that have long since dragged us away from our God-given purpose, we seek to put on the armor of God in these times. We give up our will for His will, understanding that inside His will we become what He designed us to be. He takes away all that was not of Him and replaces it with peace, hope, and joy. He makes us new. He brings us to the cross again and reminds us of our worth to Him and His love for us.
Greensboro-Randolph Megasite Marketing Video Release A new video release showcases the Greensboro Randolph Megasite presenting information about the site and the region. The video is one part of a multi-dimensional marketing platform to inform prospects, allies and stakeholders about the competitive advantages and opportunities that the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite represents. https://vimeo.com/194714479/1b4e9fca3a The video features Randolph County native and NASCAR great Richard Petty with a welcoming message about Randolph County. The video highlights other features including the regional workforce and abundant education institutions and high quality of life. It also notes the site's strategic location with access to transportation assets including interstate highways, rail, international airports and ports. With an area population of three million, the site is within 700 miles of half of the US population. The video was developed in a collaborative process led by Pace Communications, Inc., a digitally focused marketing agency headquartered in Greensboro. Collaborators included representatives from the Greensboro Chamber, Randolph County Economic Development Corporation, and the North Carolina Railroad. It can be viewed on Youtube and www.greensboro-randolphmegasite.com. The Greensboro-Randolph Megasite is strategically located in the Heart of North Carolina, approximately 30 miles southeast of the City of Greensboro, adjacent to Highway 421 and within 10 miles of I-40. This 1500 acre rail-served site is strategically positioned to support a highimpact industrial investment in advanced manufacturing.
In this New Year, we can continue pursuing with that which has left us empty in the past or we can seek God and allow Him to redesign our carnage into His intent for creation. Rejoicing erupts when the Author of life scripts each moment of the day, leading us where we could not imagine going on our own. Yes, He is making us into a new creation, each day revealing Himself to us, leading us to worship Him with all that we have. In Christ, we are a new creation, called out and set aside for His purpose, making an impact on a fallen world for eternity.

Sleep and Rest By Dr Rhonda Gottfriend
The Liberty Leader Newspaper
Rest and sleep are undervalued in our society. We value productivity and work not sleep and rest. Sleep and rest are an afterthought of our lives. We do not create enough space in the day for sleep and rest. There are many things that intrude on sleep in the bedroom: electric lights, T.V. screens, computer screens, tablet screens, and phone screens. Each of these devices emit light that disrupts sleep and not only reduces the length of sleep but also the quality of sleep. One research study showed that people had a shorter length of sleep, had more trouble getting to sleep, and a poorer sleep quality after using an electronic reader to read versus reading a regular book. (Reference: http:// www.pnas.org/content/112/4/1232.short) This study also found that the electronic readers suppressed melatonin levels. Melatonin is a sleep promoting hormone secreted in your brain when it is dark. The brain rejuvenates when a person sleeps. The neurotransmitters (chemicals that take the message from one neuron to another) are replenished. During sleep memories are consolidated. Short-term memories that seem relevant and important are put into long-term memory. For people who are healing and children who are growing sleep is needed even more. Infants and children need more sleep than adults because they are growing. The body and brain are doing a lot when one is asleep. I always tell my patients that the brain cannot heal from depression or any other illness unless adequate sleep is obtained. What is adequate sleep? This is not completely a settled question by researchers but many experts believe that a minimum of 7 hours is needed for almost all adults and say that the average need is 8.5 hours. Individuals do vary in their sleep need but only a very few diverge significantly. Sleep deprivation even mild of ½ - 1 hour has been shown to cause significant deficits in daytime alertness, memory, reaction time, and accuracy. One study showed that surgeons who were sleep deprived lacked accuracy and had a worse performance on simulated surgical tasks but the surgeons themselves did not know that they had these deficits and rated their own performance during a sleep deprived state as better than when getting average sleep. (reference: The American Journal of Surgery, vol 186, issue 2, August 2003, pg. 169-174.) Other research as shown that losing sleeping leads to poor decision making. The overall point is even missing an hour of sleep nightly will worsen brain function and this deficit may go undetected by the sleep deprived person. He or she is making more mistakes but she does not know it. How do we get better sleep and rest? My advice is to put the electronics away and keep them out of the bed and preferably the bedroom. Do not work in bed. Do not watch in bed. Read a book not on a tablet. Have time set aside to unwind before going to bed. Have a bedtime routine. Go to bed ½ hour earlier tonight. Do not eat a large meal or drink alcohol before bed as this will disrupt and prevent quality sleep. If feeling tired during the day despite adequate sleep time go to your doctor. This problem is common and could be a sign of sleep apnea which should be diagnosed and treated. Put rest on the priority list. Set aside time for rest. In Matthew 11:28 Jesus says, “Come to me all you who weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” Are you so busy getting everything done that you do not have time to rest? How are you better off if you get everything accomplished and damage your brain in the process? More About Author. Dr Rhoda Gottfried is Currently practicing in Bloomington IL. Junior-high school girl kills 8-point, 120-inch buck in Randolph County 13-year-old wins November Bag-A-Buck contest Kinley Ferguson of Liberty, N.C. won the November Bag-A-Buck Contest with this 8-point, 120-inch buck. Kinley Ferguson, a 13-year-old seventh-grader from Liberty, N.C., has killed 14 deer since taking her first whitetail at age five. But she admitted that the mostrecent one, an 8-point Randolph County buck, was the most exciting — but maybe even more exciting for her hunting buddy. “I was pretty excited, but I think my dad was even more excited than I was,” Ferguson said of the Nov. 20 afternoon hunt when she dropped an 8-point, 120-inch buck with a single shot from her Ruger .243 at 150 yards across a 3acre food plot. “I was more excited with this one, because it’s my biggest deer, and it was killed on new land where I’d never hunted before.” A week later, Ferguson’s mother entered her buck in Carolina Sportsman’s Bag-A-Buck contest, and the entry was drawn as the winner of the November monthly contest on Nov. 30. Each monthly winner receives a prize package that includes a $25 gift certificate to the online Sportsman Outdoor Store and a free one-year Carolina Sportsman magazine subscription. The grand-prize winner, drawn from all entries and announced in the February issue of Carolina Sportsman magazine, will receive a hunt at Cherokee Run Hunting Lodge in Chesterfield, S.C., a 3-year subscription to Carolina Sportsman and a $50 gift certificate to the Sportsman Outdoor Store. Ferguson’s father, Jeff, a scorer for the N.C. Bowhunters Association, had seen the buck on opening day of blackpowder season in late October in a food plot of brassicas and clover but passed it up. He and his daughter hunted the food plot four or five times, hoping it would show up, before the buck finally returned at about 4:20 p.m. on Nov. 20. Courtesy Story Reprint From Carolina Sportsman http://www.northcarolinasportsman.com/ Great source for local sportsman , subscribe to this great news source. Her sister Karis is right beside her in the hunting. Here she gets her 6 point this year. I have had the pleasure to know both these young ladies and they are more than just great hunters, they are also all around great girls that have hearts of gold and always make whom ever are around them feel

At this holiday season, we would like to thank everyone for your prayers, cards, food, visitation, and comfort, after our daughter Angela Hinshaw was killed last June. We know our expression of thanks has been a long time in coming, as we are still grieving over her passing. The Christmas season is a time for reflection and rejoicing in the birth of our Savior. He has welcomed Angela with open arms, and she is now in His care.

Our grandson Michael Bienz was severely injured in the accident, spending 49 days in the hospital with countless physical therapy follow-up sessions. He is now walking mostly without crutches and is now on the swim team at his new school in Marion, MA. He made the honor roll his first semester and is adjusting well and excited about his schoolwork. So many people have helped us through this tragedy and we sincerely appreciate all that our family, friends, and our community have done for us. We would like to thank everyone for their kind gifts and especially their constant prayers as we continue to go through this difficult time. We want to say a special thank you to all the folks at Faith Christian school, Fidelity Bank in Ramseur and Liberty, The Randolph County Honor Guard, First Christian Church in Ramseur, and First Methodist Church of Liberty. Many, many individuals have helped us in so many ways and although there are too many to name individually, you know who you are and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts! It is really impressive the way that this community came together and did their best to get us through this most difficult of times. We are so proud to be a part of this fantastic group of people. May God Bless each and every one of you throughout this most sacred season. Mike and Debbie Hinshaw

The Rose Garden Club, Liberty, NC As new folks move into our area there is a Civic Organization in Liberty that some people may not be aware of. The Rose Garden Club. The Rose Garden Club was organized in 1947 and at the present time has 15 Members including 2 Life Time Members. Our Liberty Club is a member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., South Atlantic Region and The Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc. District #5. In October the Annual Meeting of District 5 was held at Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge, NC. Several members from The Rose Garden Club were able to attend this meeting and luncheon. It was an informative and fun day learning about all the projects, activities and events that other Clubs in District 5 were involved in and completed in 2015. Vendors were also set up with local arts, crafts and needless to say a variety of plants from local growers. The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of Awards for completed projects during the year. We are proud to say that The Rose Garden Club received four Awards which were accepted by President, Judy Hernandez. On the State level the Club received First Place for our annual Yearbook, cover designed by Brenda Shelton and put together by the Yearbook Committee. On the District 5 level the Club received First Place for Holiday Decorations that were placed at The Patterson Cottage. We also received Honorable Mention for the All Decked Out Award for the Halloween Decorations that were set up by Club member Trish Redding at her home. The fourth award was also a Honorable Mention for Garden Therapy.
HAPPY NEW YEARS

Being a white crayon is cool.... You are the white crayon....you feel like no one notices you right... you feel like the more you mark the less is shown.. . but guess what..... A character that shines through when life is thrown at it like that paint on the paper. It’s always amazed me that we have a God who knows our hearts and our characters better than we know our own yet still loves us. Many times we can’t see the fruits of our labor and we’re tired, frustrated, and overwhelmed. But take heart because the character of your life is so worth the elbow grease!
Your Donations Allow Liberty Rotary Club To Provide: 1) Support for local Boy Scout Troop 502 for over 70 years 2) College Scholarships to deserving local High School Seniors 3) Dictionaries to all 3rd graders in Randolph County 4) Total support for Liberty School Summer Back Pack Program 5) Support to numerous other civic and charitable causes 6) Support to Rotary Foundation to Eradicate Polio Worldwide TICKETS CAN BE PICKED UP AT FOLLOWING LOCATIONS Fidelity Bank , Freeman Ford, Doug Clark Accountant, Liberty Auto Parts or Call 336-404-9791
And believe it or not, our own character is being molded in the midst of it all our trials. So the next time you feel like you’re frantically scribbling with a white crayon on white paper and struggling to see the whole picture, remember that it’s not for nothing. Hopefully when life brushes over our life, it’ll be a beautiful design that shows up. You will see that awesome character show brightly and (even your character marks on other people will show where you made marks) Hope this all makes since.

Jordan Memorial UMC Shout Out One of our members, Mrs. Toni Marley, made the January newsletter at our local YMCA! Check out what they said about her: "Toni Marley just recently turned 95! Toni has been coming to the YMCA since around 2002, not long after she retired. She’s been working out 3 days a week since then. Her normal routine is to get on an elliptical and rower before attending the Water Aerobics Class. If you ask her what her secret is, she will tell you to just keep doing the things you enjoy. What Toni enjoys doing most is giving back to the community by volunteering where she can. She volunteers, and has been for many years, at Hospice, the Soup Kitchen as well as her church —Jordan Memorial in Ramseur. She feels very blessed to be able to do these things at her age. She says the reason why she can still go and do is because of her health —being active and trying to eat right. Toni has formed a family at the Y. The Water Aerobics Class threw her a birthday party to celebrate!"

Flu Prompts Restrictions at Randolph Hospital ASHEBORO- The spread of influenza in our community has prompted Randolph Hospital to take additional measures to protect patients, staff and visitors. Until further notice, Randolph Hospital will not allow visitors who are displaying any flu-like symptoms, such as fever, cough or sore throat. Additionally, people younger than 12 years of age will not be allowed to enter the hospital unless they are at the hospital as a patient including siblings of maternity patients. Visitors to the hospital should be limited to no more than two per patient at any given time and visitors may be asked to wear masks, gloves or protective gowns when visiting patients. “We feel these restrictions are a necessary step to protecting our patients, staff and adult visitors as the reports of increasing cases of flu appear throughout the region,” said Debbie Dowling, Senior Director of Quality Management. “We will continue to monitor the situation very closely and may add additional restrictions if necessary.” Further precautions at Randolph Hospital also entail increased availability of masks, gloves and alcohol-based hand sanitizer at all major entrances into the facility as well as signage displaying the visitation restrictions. “We understand that these additional restrictions may be an inconvenience for patients and families, but we ask for your understanding and patience as we work to limit the spread of flu. Protecting our patients who have a weakened immune system or who are at a higher risk for infection such as pregnant women and newborn infants, is a first step in controlling the spread of flu this season,” said Dowling.

The visitation policy will remain in effect until the rate of flu in the region has significantly decreased. To help reduce the spread of flu, the following universally approved precautions are recommended for everyday use: • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze • Wash your hands often and with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze; alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth • Stay home if you are sick The hospital is encouraging friends or loved ones to call, write a letter or send an electronic cheer card through Randolph Hospital’s website as an alternative to visiting patients at the hospital. Randolph Hospital thanks the public for its cooperation in helping to protect the safety of our patients, staff and visitors. For more information on the flu please refer to these resources.www.cdc.gov or www.randolphhospital.org.
