Weatherization 101: 4 Ways to Get a Warmer Home this Winter

(StatePoint) Dreading the cold drafts and rising heating bills that come with winter? You’re not alone. Nearly two-thirds of Americans live in homes that need to be weatherized to improve heating efficiency and maximize comfort, but many still don’t take the time to do so, according to a survey conducted by OnePoll for Duck brand. Why? The cold reality is that most people simply don’t know what to buy or where to start when it comes to weatherizing their homes. But, preparing your house for chillier weather can be as easy as following some step-by-step instructions or consulting a brief how-to video. Here are a few tips to get started. 1. Secure Seals by Weatherstripping. Windows and doors are the two largest draft sources in any home, leading to high heating costs and an uncomfortable living environment. For these reasons, they should be top priorities. To combat these sneaky air leak spots, use high-strength weatherstripping, such as Duck brand MAX Strength Silicone Weatherstrip Seal. This strong, flexible material makes it easy to seal gaps of different sizes around windows and doors. 2. Dodge Door Drafts. Assess your doors for potential drafts and energy loss, as everyday wear and tear can wreak havoc on thresholds and door seals. Depending on the door style, there are several solutions that provide multiple layers of protection, such as door shoes, draft seals and door sweeps. Most are easily customizable to meet your door width simply by cutting the product down to size. Online videos can provide step-by-step instructions that show you exactly how to install a variety of different door weatherization solutions. 3. Winterize Windows. There are additional defenses for your windows, such as Duck brand Roll-On Window Insulation Kits. With a few simple steps, you can insulate windows while maintaining a crystal-clear view. These kits offer a pre-taped top for quick and easy roll-on film installation. Plus, there’s no measuring required and they fit snugly to window frames for the duration of the winter season. To learn how, watch this how-to video: youtube.com/watch?v=ZY8qialgEW0. 4. Cover Sneaky Attic Entranceways. Finally, don’t forget about attic access openings or pull-down stairs as a source of air leaks. Since they’re usually not insulated, they can be a considerable culprit of energy loss in your house. How do you prevent this? An attic stairway cover is a simple solution to combat heat loss. Plus, they’re flexible, lightweight and easily repositioned to maintain direct access to the attic. For more project ideas and product information, visit DuckBrand.com. Don’t be left in the cold this winter. By taking a few measures, you can prepare your home against drafts and air leaks during the wintry months.

Thankful for Something New

Volume 16 Issue 1

101 S. FAYETTEVILLE ST. LIBERTY, NC 27298

FROZEN INTERACTIVE SING-ALONG MOVIE With Voice Actor MAKANI McKENZIE By: Andy Clapp The old year has ended, and a New Year has come. Most have made resolutions, may will break those by next week, and hope has come. We have a new beginning, and, if only for a moment, we believe that nearly anything is possible. How thankful are we that something new has come? In reading the various interactions Jesus had with others, His offering to many was something new. The chance at a new beginning. The opening of the eyes and mind to a new perspective. The offering of a new life, a life that would extend beyond the physical life on earth. The offering of Jesus was never to remain in what was, but to enter something new. One of the greatest examples would be the woman caught in adultery. She had made a mistake. She had looked for something more in life, but had searched for that something in the wrong place. Caught in such an act, she is thrown into the presence of the One who could give her what she needed. Religious elites wanted her killed, hoping to test Jesus, her life of no value to them. But Jesus, in that moment, opens the door, not only for the woman, but for all those standing in His presence. They pressed Him; He stooped down and wrote in the sand. They continued, and He pointed out their imperfections. He replied to them, “The one without sin among you should be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7 HCSB) This was their chance at self-evaluation, to change their ways and work on the imperfections of their lives rather than continuously focusing on the wrongs of others. This was their chance for growth. Growth can only come when one looks at their own life and analyzes what must change. F o r t h e woman, her head hung in shame as she stood there in embarrassment, Jesus offered a new life. He asked her where her accusers stood, and she looked around to see that they had filed out, one by one, each unable to live according to the standard issued by the Lord. Then, Jesus gave her the two things she needed the most. First, He offered her forgiveness. He said that He did not condemn her, an extension of grace and mercy to someone whose life depended on those very things in that moment. She was forgiven. Second, He offered her a fresh start, when He told her, “Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.” (John 8:11 HCSB) Can you imagine the depth of her thankfulness when she was pardoned from what could have been a death sentence, she was given forgiveness, and was told to go forward into a new life? Such an invitation and an offering are set before us today. For those who need perspective, we heed the words of Jesus to the crowd and accusers, to grow in our walk with Him as we look at our lives. For those who do not know Jesus, those who are desperate for more, Jesus extends an invitation for you to walk in new life and find what your soul desires in Him. For these new things, we should be eternally thankful as they are gifts from the Lord.

Spring Teacher Training Classes at RCC to Begin in January

Randolph County teachers have the opportunity to enroll in two teacher renewal classes through Randolph Community College in the spring semester. “Effective Teacher Training,” a basic preparation and information course for beginning teachers and substitute teachers, will be offered on the Asheboro Campus, from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 10 – Feb. 7, for substitute teachers (section #64091; cost $70), and from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 10 – Feb. 14, for lateral entry teachers (section #64092; cost $125). The course includes sessions on effective first day practices and time management strategies. The sessions on lesson preparation include an introduction to learning styles, activities and strategies for teaching through learning styles, components of an effective lesson plan, instructional monitoring and feedback, and planning for a substitute. Additional sessions focus on classroom management strategies, parent conferencing, and understanding the teacher evaluation system. “Classroom Management/Positive Classroom Culture” (section #64094) will meet from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 21 – March 14, on the Asheboro Campus. This course is designed to assist teachers in becoming more effective classroom managers. It includes sessions on best practices for establishing a safe and orderly school environment that supports academic achievement, the importance of giving effective directions within the context of classroom management, the importance of narrating student behavior, and the importance of corrective action as outlined in a discipline hierarchy. Suggestions and strategies are also given for moving students toward a self-managed classroom and for building trusting relationships with students and parents. The cost is $70. All classes will meet in Room 223 of the Continuing Education and Industrial Center, 413 Industrial Park Avenue. For more information or to register, call 336-328-1750.

To all my friends of "age''... Most of us are going through the next stage of our lives. We are at that age where we see the wrinkles, gray hair, extra pounds. We see the pretty 25 year olds and sigh. But, we were once 25, too, just like they will one day be our age. What they bring to the table with their youth and zest for life, we bring with our wisdom, experience and good hearts. For all we've been through, we've earned each gray hair. Whatever else life brought you/us over our 30s, 40’s, 50’s, we are survivors... we are warriors... Like a classic car. While our exterior may not be what it once was, it was traded for the spirit, courage and strength to enter this chapter of our lives with grace and pride for all we've been through and accomplished. Never feel bad about aging. It is a privilege denied to many. "If you don't get old then your DEAD!" I challenge you to re-post with your picture and age. Copy, paste and change age.

“Pastors Porch” with Pastor Don Hey guys, Pastor Don sitting on my couch looking at my front porch through the window. You might be thinking, why I am sitting inside looking at my porch instead of being out on my porch? I’ll tell you why, its freezing cold outside and this west coast boy doesn’t do well when it’s in the twenties! So for this month we are having our conversations with God inside, warm and cozy! Most of my conversation with God today is reflecting on the year that we just had, and giving Him many thanks for all that it brought to our lives. The good, the bad, and the ugly! Honestly, 2017 has been an amazing year for my family and I, filled with so many blessings, full of Gods amazing love and grace. Most definitely the best year of our lives so far, and that includes a year that brought the passing of my father in law in a tragic accident. Thank you Lord What I have learned over my 44 years of life here on this earth is that no matter what kind of year you had, and I have had some doozies, you can always take something from it into the new year. Whether it be many thanks for all the blessings and good things, or the lessons learned and character built from the trials and hardships, there is something you can use moving forward that can make you and your life better. The key is to let God help you “separate the meat from the bone”. The meat is what we keep to eat and nourish us, and the bone we throw away or bury. No matter what your year was like, you need to take the good from it that God can use to move you forward, and leave the bad behind that will only hold you back. God can and will do this for you as He has done for my family and I for the last several years. Most importantly He wants to! Phillipians 3:12-14 says “I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us” I love you and am praying for you to have an amazing 2018. Filled with Gods Love, Mercy, and Grace. For your blessings and His Glory! Happy New
