Assistive Technology Program"
NC STEP Grant Update"
The SALT Council (Seniors And Law Enforcement Together) will have a program on “Assistive Technology” at the Roy C. Reitzel Center, 128 S. Fayetteville Street, Liberty on Wednesday, July 16th at 2:00. Sonya Butler Clark, Assistive Technology Information Specialist from the NC Assistive Technology Program will discuss categories of assistive technology, the Device Loan Program, helps with vision, hearing, mobility and daily living and more. The speaker will bring equipment for demonstration. This event is FREE and open to the public. Please bring family and friends to this informative event. Refreshments will be provided. FREE FANS FOR SENIORS AND THE DISABLED" The Randolph County Senior Adults Association has received a limited amount of free 20-inch box fans available to seniors and the disabled on a first come, first served basis who did not receive a free fan last year. Due to the limited amount of fans, those who received one last year will be put on a waiting list. The fans are provided with funds donated by Dominion Resources, Duke Energy Foundation, Duke Energy Progress and Valassis. The Operation Fan/Heat Relief Program is administered regionally by the Piedmont Triad Regional Council of Government’s Area Agency on Aging. ! Fans are available to Randolph County residents, age 60 and over and the disabled who have an existing home situation that presents a threat to the person’s health and well-being. Seniors and the disabled must provide their name, date of birth, phone number, address and the disabled under 60 must also provide proof of Social Security income or a Medicare card as well. Edwards Grove Baptist Church will be having an abstinence program at our church at 214 S Foster St in Liberty on July 11th and 12th. Fri from 4-8 and sat from 10-2. History Lesson ! What is a plug nickel?! Plugs are the holes made in coins, which is then filled with a cheaper metal. Coins so tampered with are no longer legal tender and are thus worthless if spotted. The phrase is, of course, American. Before 'plugged nickels' there were 'plugged quarters' and 'plugged dimes'. The various versions of the phrase appear in the 1880s. The nickel, being a lower denomination coin, lends itself better than quarters and dimes to a phrase expressing worthlessness. Oddly though, the lowest denomination coin is the cent and the phrase 'not worth a plugged cent' doesn't appear until later. The earliest I've found for that is 1908. The earliest of any version of the phrase that I can find is from The Daily Nebraska State Journal, 14th September 1883. This indicates the illegitimate nature of plugged coins:!

This is a great community fundraising event. Lets get this built to honor our veterans. As you can see the ride started over in Asheboro at Cox Harley. The sheriff department gave them a escort ride to protect everyone. Mayor Terry Caviness was one of the lead people behind this ride followed by a staff of great volunteers. In one picture you will see a rider is holding a picture of a family member that was a veteran. This ride for raising funds for the Liberty Veterans Memorial touches hearts in numerous ways. Also picture is Liberty Fire Chief JR Beard proudly rode his motorcycle and he too is a veteran that served and protected us during wars the US was in. Troi Nance preformed while the color guard was on stand. What was even more amazing is that the winners of cash prizes gave there winning right back to the fundraising. Yes, Liberty you came out in full color. So please make a donation to the Liberty Veterans Memorial, its the least you can do to pay back for all the lives lost, time lost by family members while there loved ones served and the list goes on. I recently was talking to local Doug Garrett about his time in service protecting our country and the things our soldiers had to endure both physically and mentally is beyond our simple minds of comprehending . I want to thank every veteran that served and protected my Christian Country. !

Story By Tamra Moger! On Saturday morning, April 5, nearly 100 people participated in the fourth annual David Wrenn Memorial! Run. This annual event was established by the children of the late David Wrenn, an avid runner, to honor his memory and to raise funds for a scholarship, helping needy students attend FCS. This year’s run had two added features. Not only did we have a walk/run fun mile, but a 5K was included in the event as well. In addition to raising funds for the David Wrenn Scholarship, matching funds were raised to aid in the adoption process for John and Brooke Voncannon. With! sponsorships and registration fees, we were able to raise a total of $3,024, with $1,512 going to each cause. We are grateful for the many who made this event possible and for the continued blessing these funds will be as we are able to impact FCS, the Voncannons and our entire community for the cause of Christ. Please mark your calendar for next year’s run on Saturday, April 4, 2015.

Liberty Leader Staff Volunteer At Food Bank!
LAC - Great Things Under One Roof!
I had the pleasure of volunteering along with my staff at the Liberty Food Bank. It was great to help stock the shelves and learn how this program works. We donate food occasionally but to actual volunteer took it to another level. As you can see from the story about this ministry it effects numerous people. I hope you will consider volunteering, donation food or money , praying over this ministry or all of the above.
A group from Freedom Family Church visited the LAC (Liberty Association of Churches) to learn what all is located in the building located at 125 S Greensboro St in Liberty. Well you see this is a great ministry that is support by all the local churches regardless of their denomination. We all serve one GOD and we are all ONE CHURCH. At this location you will find the Liberty Bargain Shop where you can purchase numerous items from clothing to home items. Plus normally they have seasonal items. You may also contact them for donation. The great thing about this shop is that every dollar spent goes back to the emergency assistance fund. Also in this location if the Food Bank. Here families can come and get food to help out during the month. This is a great ministry because not only do they accept food donations from individuals but area stores donate items that they have left overs of. Plus, to those that give monetary donations, they have got the art down on how to stretch a dollar and make the money go the farthest. In addition to just giving the food out, they educate on how to make the food stretch the farthest, thanks to the Liberty Faith In Action Nurse. In addition to all this great stuff, the is the location of LAC Emergency Assistance Office. This is where they help local out when life has just hit them with a bad situation. So as you can see, there is some great things under this one roof. I strongly encourage you to help if you can with this great ministry. Every dollar counts.

Downtown Liberty Summer Kickoff Event!
2014 Liberty Chamber of Commerce! Third Thursday Event !
Thank you for everyone who attended our June Third Thursday Event! A BIG thank you to “Southern Storm” who really rocked out and brought in a crowd. Thank you also for several of the businesses downtown staying open for our guests. Coming up in July is “Church Night” which was rescheduled for this month due to a rain out in May. Several local churches are coming together to bring this awesome night of fellowship and fun. Pastor Todd Moore from Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church will be sharing with the kiddos his famous story telling, puppets, and magic tricks. Pastor David Hobson from Rocky River Friends Meeting will be showing us how to worship “accordion” style. FFC kids choir will be leading in some songs and hand motions for worship. There will also be special music from several soloists in the Liberty area. Freedom Family Church will be sponsoring lots of fun games and crafts. Ben Suggs, aka Southern Entertainment will emcee the event. I would also like to mention here that Freedom Family Church Ladies are having a couponing contest which began July 1st. June was the second month that the downtown merchants in Liberty conducted a chance for visitors to win CASH. June 21 was the June event called Summer Kickoff. Just for visiting each business in downtown you received a raffle ticket. If you made a purchase of $10 or more you received and additional raffle ticket. As you can see from the pictures it was a great turnout. In May , Eddie Ward won $100 cash. In June, Judy Herndon and Julie Cheek each won $50 cash that was drawn out at 2:30 at the Gazebo downtown. 100 Man Project, Inc. Reading Incentive Winners!

Students at Liberty Elementary School recently took part in the 4th annual Reading Incentive Contest sponsored by the 100 Man Project, Inc. The contest ran from February-April, 2014. Eleven classes reported participating in the contest with 7,237 books read in 3 months! The winning classroom in each participating grade was treated to an ice cream party. Winning classrooms were:! heat can take its toll on both people and pets! According to the Center For Disease Control, people suffer heat-related illness when their bodies are unable to properly cool themselves. The body normally cools itself by sweating. But under some conditions, sweating just isn't enough. In such cases, a person's body temperature rises rapidly.When it is hot out, we all sweat! When the humidity is high, sweat will not evaporate as quickly, preventing the body from releasing heat quickly. Sunburn is another factor to prevent. Wearing sunscreen and applying it often is necessary when out in the direct sunlight. Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes from exposure.If you need to be outside this summer, try to do so in the early morning hours or later in the evening. Try to avoid mid-day, when temperatures may be higher. Drink plenty of water. Stay away from soft drinks, as they will not quench your thirst like water will! The Center for Disease Control suggests you increase your fluid intake, regardless of your activity level. “Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink. During heavy exercise in a hot environment, drink two to four glasses (16-32 ounces) of cool fluids each hour.”Your pets also are affected by high heat! Remember to change their water bowlsand keep them cool too! They may not be as eager to run and play if they are hot! This time of year is a good time to trim their coat! Getting off that extra layer may help them stay cooler.! Check in on your neighbors to make sure they are adjusting to the high temperatures. There are many in our community who may need fans to help cool their homes. We have some resources in our Randolph County community that may be able to assist. On June 13, 2014 the 100 Man Project, Inc. hosted our 3rd annual Dental Bus event. We were able to serve 38 local residents with much needed dental services. This was a record number of people served in our community and is all thanks to the tireless efforts of our volunteers. The North Carolina Baptist Men Dental Bus Ministry provides the mobile clinic and talented hosts to bring the Bus to the event and oversee the smooth operation on the unit. Dental professionals volunteer to provide the clinical expertise to serve members in the community. Returning this year to lead our team of clinical volunteers was local dentist Chip Butler and Greensboro’s Neill Morrison. Dental Assistant Renee Brady, Dental Hygienist Patricia Redding, and Dental Student Hassana Ansari provided vital assistance to our dentists both on the bus and in a special room set up in the Fire Station for dental cleanings. We were blessed to have three new volunteers this year to register and provide health screenings to patients prior to their procedures. Sarah Marshall, RN and Sandra Bailey, EMT/CNA of Liberty and Barbara Dixon, Receptionist/CNA of Burlington were the first line of support to greet patients and prepare them for the dental professionals.! It takes a community of support to provide a service such as this and we would like to thank Yasser Salem of Capri’s Pizza for donating lunch for our volunteers. Delicious pans of Baked Spaghetti, Baked Ziti and Baked Tortellini were served with smiles by Mr. Salem and Daphne Pearson to our hardworking volunteers who were grateful for such a bountiful feast.! We would like to commend Don Moore, who chaired this year’s event, for the many hours of planning and coordinating that it takes to make this mission a success. He worked with our dental professionals, NC Baptist Men Dental Bus Ministry, 100 Man Project, Inc. volunteers and our lunch sponsor, Capri’s Pizza, to ensure that this event was a success.

Liberty Senior Center ! Open House! June 22 was an open house and a volunteer appreciation event at the Liberty Senior Center which is housed in the Rietzel Center in downtown Liberty on Fayetteville St. They had a wonderful spread of food for all visitors. The Liberty Leader volunteers through out the year and it was great to see all the others that give of their time, from Meals On Wheels drivers, to pastors, to program volunteers and the list goes one. This is a great place for seniors in our surrounding area to come and enjoy great programs and fellowship.

2014 Randolph EDC Annual Meeting Results
The Randolph County Economic Development Corporation honored Harold Holmes, Chairman of the Randolph County Board of Commissioners with the 2014 Partner in Progress Award at the organization's 29th Annual Meeting today. The annual award was created in 1997 to recognize those individuals, organizations and groups that make a significant contribution to economic development in Randolph County. Holmes was recognized for his positive leadership and rock solid support for economic development over twenty years of service on the Board of Commissioners, the last eleven as Chairman. During his tenure, the EDC has reported 9,438 new jobs and $1.4 billion in new investment. He will leave public office later this year to enjoy his family and well earned retirement. The 29th Annual Meeting featured a presentation on Workforce Development, the Pathway to Economic Development Success, with emphasis on closing the skills gap and new training initiatives at Randolph Community College. Dr. Bob Shackleford, RCC President, said that 11 million people in the US are seeking jobs and there are 4 million job openings in advanced manufacturing that aren't filled due to the skills gap. Initiatives in computer integrated machining, welding, electronics, facilities maintenance, and 3-D printing are all preparing the workforce for jobs available today in Randolph County. Rick Powell, President of Pemmco Manufacturing talked about changing technology in today's advanced manufacturing workplace and introduced one of his key employees, Stefan Morton, an RCC graduate, to share his journey to a career in advanced manufacturing. The Randolph County EDC reported on a very successful year with more than $46 million in new investment and 343 new jobs. The EDC debuted a new video at the meeting featuring the unique location, assets and people in Randolph County. The video will be available on the EDC website at www.rcedc.com next week. Three very special retirees were recognized for their leadership, commitment and service to economic development over the past decades. Dr. Diane Frost, Superintendent of Asheboro City Schools, George Gusler, President of the Asheboro Randolph Chamber of Commerce and Jerry Yarborough, recently retired Archdale City Manager were honored for their dedicated service to the community and to economic growth.
