Megasite Project Update
By Randolph Co Economic Development Twenty-five leaders from Randolph County and Greensboro traveled to Spartanburg on April 17 to visit the BMW plant and to hear from local government, education and economic development officials about the impact of BMW on their community and best practices and lessons experienced along the way. The key message was partnership and teamwork for the good of the community as well as leadership when tough decisions are required. Leadership and commitment from the Governor to local government leaders are essential for success. BMW located in a rural area on a major highway twenty years ago. Today they employ 8,000 workers and have invested $8 billion to create a state-of-the-art automotive assembly operation with 5.6 million square feet. The statewide impact is 37,777 jobs and $16.6 billion in annual economic impact. BMW’s presence has been a catalyst for the location of other companies, both suppliers and those attracted by the area’s business assets. BMW forged strong partnerships with the area community colleges which have aligned curriculum to meet BMW certification requirements. The colleges established a BMW scholars program, a twoyear community college program that includes part-time work and employee benefits for eligible students. They partner with local school systems from elementary to high school to ensure every student graduates ready for a two or four year college. Locally, significant progress has created momentum for the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite. Randolph County Commissioners have purchased 255 acres within the site and have scheduled a public hearing for June 1 to consider additional land purchases. The City of Greensboro is moving forward with preconstruction activities to extend water and sewer to the site including design, permitting, and environmental assessment. A public information meeting is planned for June 18 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Providence Grove High School in Randolph County. Marketing plans are underway with branding, logo, and a website to be launched by mid-July. The Megasite team is working tirelessly to ensure the site is “ready to go” for a major manufacturing employer.

74th Birthday

What do you want for your 74th BIRTHDAY? Frank Welker wanted to complete a 5K race for his birthday, and so he DID! Frank is a member of the Fitness Classes at Earth Visions. He ran his first 5K race for his 70th birthday, with Earth Visions. Since that time Frank has had several medical events that may have sidelined some folks, but not Frank. He trained wearing a weight vest and kept adding more distance until he got his birthday wish. His wife, Mary met him at the finish line, proud as punch. Wonder what Frank will do for his 75th? Frank and Mary's eight o'clock class at Earth Visions works hard to support each other and cheered Frank toward his goal. Thanks, guys! Congratulations, Frank! Job well done.

Shiloh UMC Celebrates Their 225 Anniversary By Rick Staton. Shiloh UMC has a vast history in Liberty. In 1790, Hannah Julian, along with her son, Jesse and his wife, Sarah founded the church. The church was built on many beliefs, including welcoming anyone who wanted to worship. In 1829, The Methodist Protestants in the area organized a bible class and named the church, Shiloh. In 1852, the new house of worship was erected. Jesse Julian, Jr. made up a deed for a two acre lot and deeded it to the church. The new church was not painted. In 1861, the church had begun to grow with 75 names on the churches roll. The present house of worship was built in 1906. Before the days of electricity, the church was lit by gasoline lamps. During most of the church’s life, the doors were unlocked. In May 1990, the church celebrated their bicentennial. On May 24 2015, the church celebrated their 225 anniversary. The events included a special message by Bishop Goodpastor, a recognition of the Julian family, Remembrance of the members who have passed away, a cemetery service for those buried there and special music. The celebration ended with a covered dish dinner provided by the church members with the playing of Taps at the closing of the service. Previous Pastors of the church and members of the Julian family attended the service as well. Shiloh UMC has grown abundantly since 1861 with 140 members on their church roll. The church has many ministries within it, including the “Hand to Hand “wish list for kids who can’t afford a backpack and school supplies, Methodist Men and women, etc. Shiloh UMC is a small town church with a big heart for the community. I truly enjoyed my visit with Nancy Brown, the co-historian for the church. If you don’t have a church, I recommend visiting Shiloh UMC.

Liberty Teen Camp Heads To Caraway In August of 2014, the idea of bringing middle and high school students from different churches and backgrounds together culminated in 'REVERB'. Living up to it's name, the week at Quaker Lake reverberated long after they returned home. Teens from Edward's Grove Missionary Baptist, Freedom Family Church, Mt. Pleasant Baptist, The Hangout of Siler City, and plenty of teens not associated with a congregation all shared an unforgettable time of exciting fellowship, engaging worship, missional service, and impactful teaching. So much so that they began gathering throughout the past year for "Fusion" nights. This July, REVERB returns with a new twist. Happening from July 22nd though July 25th, the teens will be staying at Camp Caraway outside of Asheboro and will spend 4 days exploring the camp, serving the community, and growing in their relationships with God and each other. Along with the zip lines, paint ball, swimming, and other recreational opportunities that come with Caraway; the teens will sing along with High Point worship band 'Not 4 Long' and be biblically challenged and encouraged by nationally renowned Christian speaker Curtis Zackery (known to most of the teens as "CZ"). "The goal has always been accessibility" said 'Reverb' organizer and FFC NextGen Pastor Ben Suggs, "If we can have the quality of a big summer camp experience, but close by and affordable, that would widen the circle and allow more people to be a part of it. We want these teens to see each other at school or around town and, even with different background or family situations, be able to have that camp experience and a love of Jesus that binds them together." Thanks to the generosity of local churches and families, attending Reverb costs an astoundingly low $125 (that includes all food and activities) with scholarships available for those who legitimately can't meet that price point. "We don't want money to be an obstacle." Suggs reiterated. "If they genuinely want to be there, we want to do everything we can to get them to a place to be impacted by what God does every year at camp. It's a 'can't miss' kind of thing!” For more information call 919-548-0350 or email ben@ffcliberty.com.

RCC Foundation Announces 2015 Presidential Scholars Five outstanding Randolph County high school students have been chosen in a competitive process as Presidential Scholars at Randolph Community College for the 2015-2016 school year. Cole Douglas Monroe of Trinity High School, Lily Marie Burgess of Providence Grove High School, Hannah Denise Freeman of Faith Christian School, Kirsten Faith Stovall of Providence Grove High School, and Polly Savannah Van Ausdall of Trinity High School will receive two-year RCC scholarships through the Presidential Scholars program funded by the Randolph Community College Foundation. High school students from public, private, and home schools throughout Randolph County were invited to apply for the scholarships. Students who met the preliminary requirements were invited to attend a Presidential Scholars Day at RCC on March 3, where they learned more about the College and were interviewed by a committee of faculty and staff members. Finalists were chosen and invited back for a second interview with RCC President Robert Shackleford Jr., who made the final choice of five recipients. Students’ academic records and extracurricular/community activities weighed heavily in the selection of recipients, as did the interviews. *Lily Burgess of Climax intends to pursue a College Transfer degree at RCC. She served as her school’s vice president with the Student Government Association and served on the principal’s advisory team. She was a member of the Beta Club and was the editor for the senior yearbook. She was also co-leader of the school’s pep squad and was a basketball player for Providence Grove. *Hannah Freeman of Asheboro has dreams of being an interior designer and will enroll in RCC’s Interior Design program. She was a member of the National Honor Society at Faith Christian and played volleyball, serving as team captain. She has volunteered as a computer technician at Pleasant Ridge Christian Church and also served in the school’s community service program. *Kirsten Stovall lives in Liberty and plans to pursue a College Transfer degree with intent to go into business or accounting. She was a cheerleader for one year and was inducted into the Beta Club. She was also a member of the Tri-M Music Honors Society at her high school and participated in musical theater. RCC Presidential Scholars receive a $2,500 scholarship for their first year of study ($1,250 for fall and $1,250 for spring) that is renewable for their second year of study. The students have the opportunity to participate in RCC’s prestigious Student Leadership Academy, serve as Ambassadors for the College, and meet regularly with President Shackleford. The RCC Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides a margin of excellence for Randolph Community College by building a strong relationship with the local community, acquiring and managing contributions, and funding activities that support the College. Pictured Below: Randolph Community College 2015 Presidential Scholars, shown here with RCC President Robert Shackleford (sitting center), are (left to right) Cole Monroe of Trinity, Lily Burgess of Climax, Hannah Freeman of Asheboro, Kirsten Stovall of Liberty, and Polly Van Ausdall of Trinity.

June 2015 Questions answered at Patterson Cottage Open House
On what date did the temperature in Liberty reportedly hit 128 degrees, causing a local store owner’s thermometer to explode? What local Liberty businessman not only operated a skating rink downtown but also played in the band Rock-a-Tones? What Liberty doctor operated a furniture manufacturing company, bottled a “liver cure” and still found time to practice medicine? What future Liberty mayor billed himself as a “salesman” at age 15, later selling ice cream he suggested to “give to the little one, boys and girls, all they can eat. It makes their cheeks rosy, never hurts or injures in any way.” What Liberty “mall” flourished in the 1950’s, featuring a hardware, Pontiac and Massey Ferguson dealerships, café, grocery, barbeque pit, gas, tires, motel rooms and bowling alley? What was Liberty’s first industry? Why was the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley railroad routed through Liberty when it was slated to follow Highway 22 to what is now Climax? Who patented and sold the Liberty Poultry Roost system in 1914, promising that it would “free your chickens from lice, mites and all kinds of vermin”? What house still standing on Fayetteville Street was hit by lightning in 1899, knocking down the mantle and barely missing the baby? What benefit did the town of Liberty gain from the disastrous fire of 1926? What courses did Liberty Normal College offer? Find out the answers to these and other questions you might have on the history of Liberty at the Patterson Cottage Museum open house, Saturday June 20 from 11-2:00. Bring your stories, photos and artifacts. Time is history’s greatest enemy and these stories and pictures of Liberty’s history are quickly disappearing. Help the Patterson Cottage preserve our heritage. For additional information call Warren Dixon at 622-2731.

Liberty South Eastern Karate Liberty NC South Eastern Karate - Summer Special! I'm running a special for this Summer from June 1st through August 31st. FREE Month of training! Pay for 1 month and get 1 month free. I have always worked hard to maintain low monthly prices at our school. Martial arts are meant to help people be all they can be...physically, mentally and emotionally. Traditional training is about way, way more than just fighting. Physical ability is easily trumped by mental skills...but put them together and you can defend against even the worst situation. That is our way of teaching. Who are we? - South Eastern Karate of Liberty has been teaching locally for nearly 18 years. We have guided many, many students on the journey from beginner to Black belt (and beyond). I have been training and teaching Moo Duk Kwan Style Tae Kwon Do since the late 70's. I was in law enforcement for around 20 years and emphasize selfdefense in our curriculum. Tournament style is fine...but not the emphasis of our school. True martial arts skill can only come through hard work, respect and perseverance. Short cuts do not exist if you truly want to achieve your best. One month free if you sign up during June, July or August! Our dues are already inexpensive at $45 per month....sign up now and get two months for the same price. Our school is located at 120 West Starmount Ave. in Liberty...near Liberty Elementary School. Read more about us... http://southeasternkarate.com/ Liberty is a branch of the main school in Siler City under Master Instructor Peggy Jolly.Feel free to drop by and watch classes...questions are welcome! Classes on Monday and Thursday nights 7 until 8:30. Ages 7 to adult are welcome! Contact me at 919-548-5689 or by email at liberty@southereasternkarate.com .
