The Frank Welker 5K 2018 Yes, once again Frank Welker has completed his 5K, proving that you don’t get older you just get better. Frank is past the three-quarters mark this year. At 76 years young, he met his 8:00 am Morning Exercise Class following the crossing of the finish line of his 5K. Novella Kennedy of Earth Visions Massage & Fitness, accompanied Frank, and wouldn’t you know? Teana Kivett made a surprise visit by driving up, catching Frank in action, stopping and snapping pictures of the Birthday Boy, along with herself. Teana was very happy for Frank and proud of his accomplishment. The photo is the proof of Frank on the roadway collecting attention from passers-by. Of course, congratulations and shouts of joy awaited Frank at the finish line, from all his fellow exercisers. Also at that finish line was Frank’s wife of 50 years, Mary, who was proud of Him. Go, Frank! See you next year! Oh, and Happy Birthday!!

Randolph Health Offers Mental Health First Aid Training for Healthcare Workers & Faith Community Leaders ASHEBORO – Randolph Health will offer Mental Health First Aid Training for Healthcare Workers & Faith Community Leaders. This 8-hour training course gives people the tools to identify when someone might be struggling with a mental health or substance use problem and to connect them with appropriate support and resources when necessary. One in five Americans has a mental illness, but many are reluctant to seek help or might not know where to turn to for care. Unlike physical conditions, symptoms of mental health and substance use problems can be difficult to detect. For friends and family members, it can be hard to know when and how to step in. As a result, those in need of mental health services often do not get them until it is too late. Just as CPR helps even those without clinical training to assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aiders learn a five-step action plan that guides them through the process of reaching out and offering appropriate support. The Mental Health First Aid Training will take place on Tuesday, June 26th, from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. This class will be conducted in the Randolph Health Education Center, 200 A Foust St., Asheboro. You must attend the full 8 hours to receive credit. Space is limited and registration is required. This is one of the many programs offered to the community through Randolph Health at no cost. If you would like to register, please call (336)633-7788 or visit www.randolphhealth.org and register online.
Randolph Health Community Foundation Grant Opportunity Calling all non-profit organizations in Randolph County! Does your organization sponsor a project that focuses on physical fitness, nutrition or substance abuse? Could your organization use money to help with your project? The Randolph Health Community Foundation would like to hear from you! The Foundation has announced that the 2019 grant process has begun for prospective grantees. All interested organizations that would like to be considered for funding are asked to complete a Letter of Intent and send it to the Foundation office no later than close of business on June 29, 2018. “The letter should be very simple. Just tell us about your organization and the project you plan to complete,” says April Thornton, President of the Randolph Health Community Foundation. “All we need are a few sentences outlining your idea, budget, number of people that will be impacted and area of focus.” The Randolph Health Community Foundation will fund grants which engage volunteers and organizations to motivate the Randolph County community to make healthy lifestyle choices. The priorities of the Foundation are Randolph Health and programs which support at least one of the following focus areas: nutrition, physical fitness or substance abuse. For 2018, its 21st year of awarding grants, the Randolph Health Community Health Foundation awarded 17 health and wellness grants totaling $102,566. Interested organizations can find more information and get a sample Letter of Intent by contacting Linda Schumacher at 336-633-7755, emailing Linda.Schumacher@RandolphHealth.org or visiting www.RandolphHealth.org.

The ladies and gents of The Rose Garden Club have been very busy with a new project. If you will recall several years ago the main street in Liberty was lined with white concrete urns. After years of not being able to keep anything alive in these urns and complaints from people parking on the street, the urns were retired to the Town’s water treatment facility nestled under some trees where they sat patiently waiting to be used again. Mayor Fil York approached our Garden Club about finding a place that might be suitable for the urns and make them attractive. After several meetings a committee was formed headed up by Linda McManus to come up with a place that would best suit our gift. It was decided that the fence behind the Liberty Farmers Market would be a suitable spot. Linda took before photos of the area and made a presentation to the Club and we voted to proceed with this project. The Town had some trees trimmed to open the space along the fence. Brian at Gilmore Plant & Bulb met with some club members to decide the best option for plant material for our urns and the plant material was purchased by the Club. Our next step was to look at the uneven ground and tree roots that we had to work around. Our solution to this problem with the help of Parks & Recreation was to bring in some mulching material to spread out and level the ground. After that was done, we had a work day with club members to put down and secure black plastic. Next came many loads of mulch provided by the Town that club members spread over the entire area. Then we were ready to have the urns brought over. A very special thanks goes to the Public Works Department for being patient with us and moving the urns from the water treatment facility between all their regular daily tasks. Moving the urns was no small job as they are very heavy and required several people. We would also like to thank Rhonda Murray with Liberty Hardware for the donation of a 100’ water hose to help maintain our project. After Public Works set the urns and leveled them up for us, we were ready to start the fun part of scrubbing and pressure washing all seven urns. They cleaned up very nicely and were planted with our chosen plants. Our goal was to have this project completed by Memorial Day and the Dedication Ceremony and Unveiling of the Liberty Veterans Memorial & Gardens. Another special thanks goes to John Stanley with Euliss Propane for putting up (at the last minute) a beautiful wood fence behind our urns. It was more than we could have hoped for and really made our project shine for the Dedication Ceremony. The Rose Garden Club meets September-May the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on Fayetteville Street. We welcome new members, if you are interested in joining us in our quest to brighten some areas around Liberty with new projects, you can message our Face Book Page (The Rose Garden Club), and our Membership Chairman will get in touch with you or you can call or text 336-337-5031 for details.

Missionary Sam James Returns Home To Liberty Liberty native and long time Baptist missionary Sam James is returning to his hometown Saturday June 16 to talk about his new book, “The Making of a Servant, Anchored in Vietnam.” The free program is sponsored by the Liberty Library. James, whose mother was a popular music teacher in Liberty, graduated from Wake Forest and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and after a tour in the U.S. Navy, served as pastor of Liberty’s Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. After planting the Homestead Heights Baptist Church in Durham in 1961, the Foreign Mission Board appointed him as a Southern Baptist missionary to Vietnam. In 1962, James, his wife Rachel and their three children boarded a ship bound for Hong Kong, finally arriving in Saigon Nov. 3, 1962. Thus began a 51 year career in international missions. James began pastoring Grace Baptist Church, Southern Baptists’ first church in Vietnam. Rachel ran medical clinics in rural villages on the outskirts of Vietnam. Rev. James founded the Vietnam Baptist Theological Seminary and planted seven churches in and around Saigon. As war came to Vietnam, James was nearly killed three times between 1965 and 1970, including a miraculous escape from a Viet Cong firefight. In April, 1975, with the communists closing in on Saigon, Rachel and the children were evacuated to Thailand. Rev. James stayed behind to help care for the tens of thousands of refugees flooding into the city. Finally he was forced to flee the country, just five days before Saigon fell. In 1980, he was tasked with overseeing the construction and development of a new missionary training center in Richmond, VA. The center opened in 1984 and more than 10,000 missionaries have received their training there. After serving as area director for East Asia and vice president for Europe, Sam and Rachel were able to return to their first love, Vietnam, in 2002. Although the couple could not live in the country, they were permitted to make trips there several times a year. Once in Saigon, they were able to return to the Grace Baptist Church which had survived the Communist takeover and reunite with some of their former students. Rev. Sam James will appear at the Council Room (the old courtroom) at the Liberty Town Hall, adjacent to the Library. The program will begin at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, June 16. Rev. James will talk about growing up in Liberty and his experiences in Vietnam and will sign his new book. Books will be available for sale afterwards. Checks and cash will be accepted. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to this free program.

LIBERTY CHAMBER NEWSLETTER JUNE 2018 By: Teresa Bruchon CHAMBER SPRING APPRECIATION LUNCHEON: Spring was definitely in the air at the Liberty Chamber Spring Appreciation Luncheon held on Wednesday May 9, 2018. Not only was the setting bright and beautiful at the First United Methodist Church of Liberty, but the atmosphere was, as well. Positive and optimistic views prevailed, from all of the public officials and guest speakers. Approximately 70 chamber members and invited guests from all aspects of the community attended the annual informational luncheon. There were plenty of fresh faces and perspectives. It was an opportunity to hear updated plans and new ideas from significant people throughout the county and surrounding area. It is always refreshing to hear news about Liberty from a larger perspective. We have to agree with the Liberty Town Manager, who stated, “On behalf of the Mayor and Council, we want to thank you for putting together such an impressive guest list. The Chamber did a great job!” In attendance were, NC House Representative Allen McNeill, NC House Representative Majority Whip Jon Hardister, Randolph County Commissioner; Chairman David Allen, Randolph County Commissioner ViceChairman Darrell Frye. Kevin Franklin from the Randolph County Economic Development Corporation, Tammy O’Kelly representing the “Heart of North Carolina” Randolph County Tourism Development Authority, Jessica McDaniel from the Randolph County Community College Small Business Center. Area schools, Liberty Elementary, NERMS, and Providence Grove HS were represented by either their principal, administrative staff, or guidance counselors and career coordinators. Our very own, Liberty Mayor Filmore York, and new Town Manager William Doerfer gave a Town of Liberty community update. The overall theme was expressed through the importance of positive collaboration between community, businesses, organizations, government, and schools, and the necessity to partner with each other to accomplish goals. The business outlook for Liberty looks promising! 2018 Chamber Membership Plaques: Thank you to all of our current 2018 Liberty Chamber Members who attended the Spring Luncheon. The Liberty Chamber Appreciates your Membership! If you or your business representative did not pick up your Membership plaques at the Spring Luncheon, be on the lookout for them in the mail. They should be arriving soon. If you do not receive one, please contact the Liberty Chamber (336) 622-4937. We will make certain that you receive yours. Business After (or Before) Hours: The Liberty Chamber is currently seeking businesses to host the Summer Business After Hours Events. If your business is interested in hosting a networking event, either before or after regular business hours, please contact the Chamber. The Chamber will coordinate with the hosting business, to help promote and advertise this event. For more information please contact (336)622-4937. Welcoming Bags: The Chamber is working on a new project that will be helpful to new area residents. Newcomers to Liberty will receive a free informational type bag upon moving to the Liberty area. These bags will include pertinent info as well as, a few welcoming gifts. We will be seeking promotional material from our Chamber businesses to help support this project. More details to come. As always….Thank you for your involvement, commitment, and investment in the Liberty Chamber!!!
