NERMS Students Cultivate Success Chickens, rabbits, aquaponics, and raised bed gardening are just a few of the ways that students are learning about agriculture at Northeastern Randolph Middle School. Led by the Agriculture teacher, Melissa Coble, students are not only gaining an understanding about the principles of agriculture, they are acquiring a passion for it as well. Coble became the Agricultural teacher at NERMS during the second semester of the 2012-2013 school year. One of the first things that she wanted to do while at NERMS was to establish a middle school chapter of the Future Farmers of America (FFA). Before the year was over they had created an FFA club and they had also elected officers. The club promoted National FFA week this year by speaking to the 6th and 7th grade classes about agriculture. The officers spoke about chickens, eggs, and rabbits, while answering questions about the club. The next thing Coble wanted to do to promote Chicken Tractor: Pictured from left to right: Henry agriculture was to assign students agricultural projects. Students Hardin, Amber Steed, McKenzie Harden, Jade Thomas, searched approved websites to look for ideas. “I could not believe Kimberly Chapman some of the projects that students were bringing in,” said Coble. Solar heaters for green houses, chicken feeders, and raised beds were just a few of the projects handed in by students. “They were very creative and really showed that they were thinking outside of the box,” said Coble. One student in particular set the bar high for future projects. Hunter Rook, an 8th grader at NERMS, became interested in aquaponics. Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics (growing plants in water). The science behind it is pretty simple. Fish waste produces ammonia in the water. A pump moves the water through a series of grow beds filled with rocks. Bacteria on the rocks eat the ammonia and convert it to nitrate (plant food). The plants take up the nitrate through their roots and clean water is returned to the fish. Hunter and Mr. Glen Getner, one of the school’s custodians, built the project. “One of the coolest things about an aquaponics system is how easy it is to construct,” said Rook. Some of the items, such as the pump and the barrels for the project, were donated to the school by community businesses. The aquaponics system is currently growing beans and lettuce, and we have plans to add another system in the future. A member of the local FFA Alumni Association said, “The best thing about what is going on with the NERMS Agriculture classes is that students are getting to experience hands-on learning.” Coble took some of her students to the Alumni Association meeting to present their projects. “They were nervous, but they did a fantastic job, and I was very proud of them”, said Coble. Alumni members and parents have also helped the program by donating pallets, seed trays, a cold frame, and pots. “We couldn’t do half of what we do without the help we receive from our community, especially people like Mr. Getner. He can build anything” said, Coble. When asked about the future of the Agriculture program at NERMS, Coble stated, “I can’t wait to see where we go from here.”

Plant a Pinwheel Garden!

Show your community you support children's healthy development with a ! pinwheel garden this April!! Pinwheel gardens represent our effort to focus on community activities that support families and public policies that prioritize prevention right from the start to make sure child abuse and neglect never occur. Pinwheels are increasingly being used to help educate communities about the importance of supporting children and families. Shining in the sun, the pinwheel is reflective of the bright future all children deserve and our belief that getting it right early is less costly than trying to fix it later. Nearly 900,000 pinwheels have been displayed nationwide since April 2008. We invite you to join us for the month of April in showing your support for children's healthy development and growth - the foundation for community and economic growth - by planting a pinwheel garden in your community. The future success of our community relies on the healthy growth and development of all children. When we work together to ensure their healthy development, the next generation pays it back through a lifetime of productivity and responsible citizenship. With the support of engaged communities and nurturing families, all children can thrive and have the opportunity to grow into contributing, caring, and healthy adults. Children's healthy development is the foundation for community and economic development. Research tells us that children's experiences literally build the developing architecture of their maturing brains. Children's brains are built in a sequence of phases, with each phase forming the foundation for the one that follows. Just like a house needs a strong foundation, the quality of a child's brain architecture affects all the development that follows. That's why getting it right the first time is so important. Trying to change behavior or build new skills on a foundation that was not built properly is costly and not as effective. Children thrive when they have nurturing, supportive relationships and interactions with the adults in their lives. Like the process of serve and return in a game of tennis, children of all ages naturally reach out to the adults in their lives. When those adults respond in a caring, nurturing and supportive way, children thrive. When children are abused or neglected they are in a constant state of stress. In the absence of supportive relationships to help buffer the stress, they can have a toxic stress reaction. When this happens, harmful chemicals flood the child's brain and body causing damage to the developing brain architecture, disrupting normal child development. This leaves children vulnerable, causing many of them to adopt risky social and health behaviors, such as smoking, sexual promiscuity at an early age, and illegal drug and alcohol use, among others. These risky behaviors lead to poor physical, emotional, and mental health and even early death. There must be a continuum of services available in communities to ensure all children have the opportunity to grow into contributing citizens. When communities are successful in assuring that children have the environments and experiences necessary for their healthy development, the next generation responds to that effort with a lifetime of productivity and responsible citizenship. We now know that we can prevent abuse and neglect before it occurs. When parents have the knowledge, skills, resources, and social support they need they are better able to provide the safe, stable, nurturing environments their children need to thrive.!

It’s Time to Register for Kindergarten!

Story by Jennifer Beasley It is hard to believe that Kindergarten registration is here again! Registering for Kindergarten can be an exciting time for you and your child. It can also be an anxious time. Many parents have lots of questions about Kindergarten registration. What do we need to expect during Kindergarten Registration? What do I need to bring? Will my child like school? In Randolph County, Kindergarten Registration Events will be held at all elementary schools (Liberty, Ramseur, etc.) on Tuesday, April 8th at 7:00 pm. This event is a chance for parents and children to get to know the teachers, the school staff, and the school itself. This event is a chance for parents and their children to feel more comfortable about the expectations of Kindergarten. School staff want you to come to the Kindergarten Registration Event so that they can meet you and your child! They want you to come to give you the opportunity to get to know the school where your child will attend Kindergarten so it will not be a surprise once August rolls around. Other than actually registering for Kindergarten, parents will get the opportunity to hear from the principal, a school nurse, and will get the opportunity to sign their children up for the Kindergarten screening, which is held at a later date. In some schools, parents might even get the opportunity to visit classrooms. Overall, attending this Kindergarten Registration Event will not only benefit you by helping your register your child, but it will also greatly benefit your child to visit the school where he/she will be attending. So if you have a child who will be 5-years-old on or before August 31, 2014, please plan on attending! Below is a flyer with more information on this Kindergarten Registration Event! http:// www.randolph.k12.nc.us/Documents/K%20registration%202014.pdf

Preventing Career Ending Knee Injuries

What do athletes Tom Brady of the New England Patriots, Tiger Woods and Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls all have in common? They have suffered major knee injuries, ACL tears (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) and were all able to return back to their sport. How did they do it? How were they able to recover? Student athletes are invited to join the Human Motion Institute at Randolph Hospital’s Athletic Training Services and attend a free program, “Preventing Career Ending Knee Injuries” on Thursday, April 24th from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Randolph – Asheboro YMCA, 343 NC Hwy. 42 in Asheboro. Joe Mullins, M.Ed., LAT, ATC, ACI, athletic training specialist, will lead an interactive discussion on how student athletes can prevent a knee injury and enhance their personal game. Participants will explore the cutting-edge programs and rehab techniques available to help student athletes not only prevent future injury, but improve personal performance. Statistics show that between 250,000 and 300,000 ACL injuries occur each year and they’re almost exclusively happening to athletes. The most common sports in which ACL tears are prevalent include soccer, basketball, football and tennis. It can take anywhere from six to nine months to a year for full rehabilitation. That’s a long time to be away from the sport your student athlete loves playing. These injuries are so rampant, but they don’t have to be. Building strength and endurance can help prevent injury. This free program is open to the public and registration is required as space is limited. It is one of Randolph Hospital’s community education events that is offered throughout the year on a variety of health-related topics. For more information, please call the Community Events Desk at Randolph Hospital at (336) 633-7788. You can also register online by logging onto www.randolphhospital.org and clicking the “Upcoming Events” tab,

Town of Liberty – Storm Debris Pick-up Info

The Town of Liberty will be collecting tree and limb debris for all residents living within the town limits over the next several weeks. There will be no set schedule for collection but an end date will be made available once we quantify the amount of debris and we will work diligently to complete the cleanup. This ice storm left a substantial amount of yard debris that will take time for collection and disposal. The Town of Liberty appreciates the citizen’s patience during this cleanup process. Residents are requested to follow the rules below concerning debris removal: • Place limbs and yard waste at the street behind the curb. • Place limbs and yard waste in a uniform manner and in organized piles for easier pickup. • Please do not place debris in the street. • Please keep your different types of waste in separate piles (ex. Normal weekly landfill items, couches, mattresses, etc… from limbs and tree debris). If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Public Works at 336-622-4276.

Duke Center Does Documentary On Liberty

Liberty Chamber of Commerce 45th Annual Banquet and Meeting

Art Jackson, retired from the NC Rural Center brought Randy Benson to town last Thursday for a tour around town. Randy is an instructor for the Center of Documentary Studies at Duke University. Randy's students will be producing a documentary of topics, people and stories within the Town of Liberty. This documentary will be shown at the Liberty Showcase when complete prior to broadcasting on UNC 4 this summer. The program is called Anytown USA: Liberty. During Art's visits as our NC Step Coach to Liberty before retiring, I gave him a tour around town, whereas we visited different industries, retail stores, wholesalers, and unique shops and people. Art fell in love with the people and the stories that make us a unique little town. Therefore, when Randy contacted Art this year, he had no hesitation where the next documentary should be filmed. On Thursday we visited 7 different locations including breakfast at Kidd's Drive Inn for an interview with Buster Kidd. We spent sometime with Joe and Gail Morgan's reptile exhibit, Off the Vine, a 3rd generation florist, the Showcase, the Wiyle House James L Wilson, Law Offices, a Norfork/ Southern previous train employee, one of a few old style hardware stores left, and Johnny Younts our undocumented historian. This past Tuesday night I went to Duke University to meet the students and talk about Liberty. They had done some research on people and places in Liberty. My contribution was to talk about the topics they had located, Randy had seen during his visit, and topics Art suggested, plus a few of my own. The students will pick the topic of their choice come to Liberty, look around for a preference, film and interview the person or place, return to class for editing by the other classmates and the instructors prior to presentation. Topics or Persons Discussed Were:

The Blue Building In downtown Liberty there is a building with a blue façade, or front. The texture on some parts of the building look like stone, as well as swirls of ornate flowers and textured squares. All of that decoration is made with pressed tin, similar to the decorative tin ceiling tiles, only on the outside of the building. This building may in fact be the last surviving metal-façade building. A 1985 Randolph County Architectural History publication noted that it was the only surviving building in Randolph County with pressed tin on the front. It was first constructed around 1895 and is one of many of the contributing buildings to downtown Liberty’s National Register Historic District. In the early days following its construction, the building housed a general merchandise store run by O’Kelly Overman who also helped build or finance the construction of other buildings downtown. James O’Kelly Overman was his full name. He was born in 1864, passed away in 1949, and is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Liberty. The building is best known by many Liberty citizens for when it was a store operated by Perry and Mae Smith. They lived on the second floor and ran their store on the first floor of the building.

Congratulations To Local ! Kevin Franklin received the 2014 Governor James E. Holshouser Professional Development Scholarship from the North Carolina Economic Developers Association last week. Franklin is the Existing Industry Coordinator for the Randolph County Economic Development Corporation, working closely with the industrial companies that call Randolph County home. He joined the EDC in January 2013 following seven years as Town Administrator in Ramseur. The scholarship provides $1,000 per year for three years toward tuition and costs to attend the Economic Development Institute, recognized as the premiere economic development program in the nation. The scholarship honors former Governor Holshouser, a strong supporter of economic development throughout his service. An old friend to NCEDA, former Gov. James E. Holshouser began his political career with four terms in the General Assembly. As governor, Holshouser served on the Executive Committee of the National Governors Conference, chairman of the Southern Regional Education Board and the Southern Growth Policies Board, and as co-chairman of the Coastal Plains Regional Commission. Following his retirement from elected office, he established the Sanford Holshouser Economic Development Consulting Group. Randolph EDC President Bonnie Renfro said, " Kevin is exactly the type of young professional that Governor Holshouser embraced. He is deeply committed to the betterment of his community and has the high ethical standards and professionalism embodied by our friend, Governor Holshouser." EDC Chairman Dr. Bob Shackleford said that Franklin is an enthusiastic member of the REDC team, eager to learn all he can to assist people throughout Randolph County with their economic and workforce development growth." ! than locally owned and operated “Native Son Vineyard” which is located at 1511 Mamie May Rd in Franklinville. You can visit local Darrel Smith and family on Friday to Saturday from 2pm to 5pm. Darrel purchased the farm in 2007 , which was formerly a dairy pasture and was once used for tobacco in the early 70’s. In March of 2008 they started planting. Several hundred wooden post were pounded in the ground and 9 gauged wire strung to accommodate over 500 muscadine vines. Their first crush was Sept 2011. The view you can see from the picture is breathtaking, for the vineyard faces Caraway and Daves mountains. I would encourage you to venture out and explore this great place in our own backyard. You can reach them at 336-495-1428 for more info. They have delicious wine tasting from 2 to 5 every Saturday. Remember, shop local and support local. In April you can find this wine at Downtown Asheboro Farmers Market. Concluding I wanted to share a quote I heard from owner Darrel’s, quote ,”You may be the buttoned-up professional by day, but we know there's a twisted spirit side to your personality! This red fills your palate with luscious blackberry flavors and finishes with a kick! It's deliciously fruity, filled with flavor, and full of surprises. ! Grab one for the weekend!”!
