Duck Dynasty In Liberty.. What? ”HEY Jack! What's all them camouflage signs around Liberty 'fer?" Well, if the beards haven't given it away, Freedom Family Church is celebrating all things outdoors with our "Duck Dynasty Sunday" on March 16th at Willie's Antiques. What began as a funny idea for the kids ministry has turned into a church and community wide gathering where we encourage anyone (Duck Dynasty fans or not) to come out and enjoy a morning of hunting-related games for all ages and some recipes that we think even the Robertsons would gobble up. Not to mention a worship service where we're substituting bales of hay for pews and a fairly well-bearded preacher will be sharing about the God of the very creation that we'll be enjoying!
"
Oh, and just in case you're wondering, there won't be any of the 'Duck Dynasty' quack-pack in attendance, but there will be tons of fun to be had by all and there should be plenty of bearded, camo-wearing, Jesus freaks to more than make up for it! So, why do this? Simple. We love taking "church" outside of the actual church walls and providing an environment where anyone can feel comfortable getting to know our family of believers. Plus, we love us some Phil, Si, Willie, Jase, and pretty much all the gang from A&E's hit reality show! But even if it's not your type of TV, come join us that Sunday morning at 10:30am, because Jesus died for all of us - rednecks and yuppies alike! Now that's what I'm talkin' bout. Now, has anyone seen my tea glass?! Story By Ben Suggs, Youth Minister FFC

Morning Goal
H
Opening my eyes, I suddenly feel the lack of sun this early July morning. Sitting up as quietly as possible, I realize that I need to complete my goal for the day prior to anyone else waking up. I slowly get up from the air mattress trying not to disturb the others sleeping in the tent. Walking out of the tent, I can barely see due to the darkness and fog that has covered my surroundings like a blanket covering an infant the first days of its life. I gather my black almost heavy bag and begin towards my task.
Immediately, as I take a few steps outside the tent, I realize that I have worn the wrong shoes for being in the woods. The damp uncollected leaves and twigs pass over the tops of my man made light brown leather opened toed sandals I chose to wear, attempting to leave a permanent mark on my feet. The soles of my shoes try to embrace every little rock and pebble on the path as I have no choice but to walk slowly. I turn my head to the right as I hear the sound of a light footstep. Something is just out of sight, I wonder if it might be a beautiful red robin or perhaps a small gray rabbit looking for some nutrition for the morning. As I am looking for the root of the sound, I see a brown squirrel pass through my path of sight. The squirrel has a much quicker step and heavier sound on the bundles of leaves, making me think the first noise I heard was definitely not a squirrel. The cold wind seems to be exaggerated due to the countless tall trees that are making it almost impossible for the sun to sneak through. Realizing I dressed for a hot summer day, I have goose bumps all over as the calming wind travels through the path. Knowing I will run into the sun soon, I continue on my journey.
As I turn the corner in the dirt path I notice the site I am looking for. The bag I am carrying is getting a little heavy so I switch shoulders as I take in this new vision. Thinking about the beautiful image at the bend of the path in front of me, I stop for a few moments. The fog, just above the lake, looks like a million fairies dancing in slow motion as if to take in every ray of sunlight shining on it. Reflections of the tall, dark, almost black trees from across the lake contrast the bright moist green grass at the base of the lake. Sitting on the ground, just out of reach from the lake, lies a light brown wooded man made canoe. At first sight you cannot tell that the canoe is worn, dilapidated and unusable. Due to the sun shining so brightly on the right side of the canoe, it’s hard to make out the grain pattern of the wood. A silhouette cast on the left side leaves all details to the imagination.
Perfectly framing everything, I see a dark brown branch with what looks like hundreds of little green leaves trying to capture some of the sunlight passing through. Swinging my bag around, I reach for the ice cold metal zipper. Reaching inside the bag I clench on to the hard body of my camera. Resting my bag on the dirt path I move my camera towards my chilled cheek on my frozen face. I inhale slowly and hold my breath. Once I have exhaled completely, I move my pointer finger to the cool button on the right side of my camera and ensure that the perfect site, my morning goal, is within my view finder of my Canon camera. Pressing the button I realize that I have accomplished my goal www.libertynewspaper.org

for the morning before anyone has awakened. Now looking at this photograph four years later I remember how I came to capturing this breathtaking image of an abandoned man made canoe sitting on the calming bank of Dodson Lake.

Don't Wait for YOUR Wake UP Call
My experience with Earth Visions has been an eye-opening one! I am living proof that exercise will save your life, and help keep you active as you age. This is a program I may not have lived without, as you will see below. It is made even better by the fun-loving, hard-working, class mates I enjoy. I am so grateful that someone cared enough to 'encourage' me into trying it. They had already seen how it had helped them in so many ways. It saved my life.
A year ago, I started going to the 8 am exercise class with a friend, who was persistent. After a few classes I found that I felt better and that my movement was so much better. Even pains that I thought I would just have to live with became less and less. So, I continue the three times a week classes. The work-out consists of working on balance, weight lifting, kettlebells, stretching and more. After the first few months, with the support of my many old, new and delightful friends, I began to eat more healthfully and walk more. I lost 20 pounds. All of this was after the doctor diagnosed me as borderline diabetic,( and let's not forget the inspiration of my friend). The doctor had suggested that I lose weight and exercise. This is only the beginning of the story... Then I had an experience that changed my thinking and my life! One morning while in Burlington, I lost consciousness and fell to the ground. Lucky for me, and certainly a gift of God, a trained nurse was right there to revive me, and a hospital was close by. As the doctors worked with me, I learned that I had heart failure, and not a heart attack, but heart failure. The doctor said, "What happened with your heart usually leaves people on a ventilator after the pace-maker surgery". I was up and doing fine the next morning. The doctors were amazed with my speedy recovery and the excellent shape that I was in...and I am proud to say that I am a 71 year old man. Incidentally, through this whole ordeal, I missed only one of my exercise classes! If it had not been for my exercise program with Earth Visions, I may not be here to share my story. This proves to my thinking that my fitness was key to my recovery. Don't wait for your wake up call. Jump right in, anytime. There is always room for one more. Get ready for real results and real fun getting there. It is never too late to start. It just may save your life!

Four Million People Suffer from Shoulder Pain. Do You? Do you suffer from stiff or achy shoulders? Does it hinder your day to wake up in the morning and feel that soreness? If so, you are not alone. Approximately four million people in the United States report shoulder pain. Because shoulder pain is so prevalent, Randolph Hospital’s Human Motion Institute is partnering with nationwide renowned Joe Mullins, M.Ed., LAT, ATC, ACI, to host “Shoulder to Shoulder,” a free event to address issues surrounding painful shoulders. The event will be held on Tuesday, February 18 at Randolph Hospital from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Mullins, with Deep River Rehabilitation, will be discussing common causes and treatments of shoulder pain and when medical treatment should be sought. The most common causes of painful shoulders are trauma, repetitive motion injuries, sports-related injuries or general wear and tear over time. Chronic overuse is the main reason why people develop shoulder problems. The Human Motion Institute at Randolph Hospital is a comprehensive orthopedic service provided by expert physicians specializing in cuttingedge procedures which are producing positive results. With a patient satisfaction score of 99 percent, the Human Motion Institute at Randolph Hospital is seeing more and more patients, who are happily returning to their everyday lives within a matter of weeks after surgery. New Hobby Shop Hits Liberty
Story By Buddy Mabe I would like to tell you guys about an exciting new business that has opened up here in downtown Liberty. “Liberty Hobby Shop” is owned and operated by Liberty resident Shane Eller . Shane is a Thomasville native, but has been a resident of Liberty for the past ten years. Shane, like manu of us, started collection Hot Wheels cars, comic books and sports memorabilia around 10 years of age. Now he has turned this life long passion into one awesome Hobby Shop here in Liberty. Shane’s store opened about five weeks ago in downtown Liberty and features everything from sports cards, sports figures, comic books, Hot Wheels and other collectible die cast cars. The Liberty Hobby Shop is great for these looking to start a hobby or for these serious collectors looking for that “hard to find” collectible. Chances are if its not there yet, you can make a special request and they will start searching for it for you. They are even looking at expanding their product line into the plastic model kits as well. On March 29, they are having their official Grand Opening with free snacks and sodas. Every item bought between now and March 29 will get a raffle ticket for a prize drawing to be held during their Grand Opening. On a personal note, “I personally have both bought and sold items to the Liberty Hobby Shop and have found that dealing with them has been a great blessing to me. Shane has always been a pleasure to do business with and is always accommodating to his customers. I invite you all to check out the Liberty Hobby Shop for some really cool stuff and some awesome fellowship.

Don’s Pirate Chest Story By Don Herndon ! 1964 The Year The Beatles Changed America
Watching the February 9th CBS special, “Salute to the Beatles 50th Anniversary the Night that Changed America”, and seeing Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, I was swept up in a wave of nostalgia. Had it really been fifty years since their historic performance on “The Ed Sullivan Show”? After the show, I did a little research on the “Fab Four’s” influence on the country.
On February 9th, 1964, when John, Paul, George and Ringo performed “All My Loving” to a screaming throng of teenagers and a mesmerized 73 million viewers, it had only been three months since the assassination of President Kennedy. The nation had been shocked and horrified at the tragedy. We had grieved as we watched that devastating event over and over on TV. But now the country was ready to start feeling better. What better way than to enjoy four English guys with a new sound? They sang about love, holding your hand, and kissing. Actually, the early Beatles were repackaging some American rock and roll and giving it back to us along with some of their original songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and, occasionally, George Harrison.
“Beatle mania” had come to America. I remember as an eleven year old listening to WABC radio out of New York as deejay Murray the K covered the Beatles ensuing trip across the Atlantic. He would play Beatle records constantly, and he really promoted the trip as he took phone calls from ecstatic teenagers. There were Beatle shirts, lunch boxes, figurines, toy drums and guitars, collectable cards, but it was mostly about the records. The Beatles sold millions of records. Often on Saturdays, Sonny Isley and I would go to Deaton’s Pharmacy right here in downtown Liberty, and buy a Beatles 45 rpm single. We would then go down to Sonny’s house, and play the 45rpm over and over, learning the lyrics. I learned to sing harmony to Beatle records.
There was an explosion of kids forming bands after the Beatles came to America. Guys would change their hair style from the slicked-back Elvis look to the dry, mop-top Beatle look of the group. Girls had crushes on their favorite, and argued over which one was “cutest”.
The Beatles toured America numerous times. They spent about two weeks of February of 1964 in the US, and then had another tour beginning in August. This was a month long tour that went from San Francisco to New York hitting twenty three cities. In August of 1965, the band played a huge concert in the new Shea Stadium in New York, the first time an outdoor stadium of that size had been used for such a purpose. Fifty five thousand tickets were sold in seventeen minutes!! The Beatles would tour the U.S. for the last time in 1966. This tour was less popular as it came on the heels of a bad comment
by Lennon that they were “more popular than Jesus now.” Many people considered that sacrilegious. They protested and some burned their records. As the Beatles walked out of Candlestick Park in 1966, folks didn’t realize that it would be their last public performance. They spent the next three years recording in the studio, and their last album, “Abbey Road” was released in late 1969.
The Beatles style changed from pop and love songs to something deeper, darker, and more introspective in the late ‘60s. Compare “I Want to Hold Your Hand” to “Eleanor Rigby.” They experimented with drugs which was not uncommon at the time. Other groups emerged and became popular as the Beatles retreated into the studio.
I am amazed at the amount of work the Beatles produced in their decade of popularity. At one point in 1964, they held the top five spots in Billboard’s Top 100. This accomplishment has never been done before or since. Lennon and McCartney have been one of the most prolific music writing duos in popular music history. They made several movies during their run. I remember seeing “Help” in a packed Curtis Theatre.
John was murdered in December 1980 in front of his apartment in New York, and George died in November 2001 of cancer. Paul and Ringo are still with us, and they can still play and sing.
So it has been fifty years since that historic night on “The Ed Sullivan Show”. We still listen to Beatle songs and remember growing up in 1960’s America.
You can go on YouTube.com and see a lot of Beatle performances including the Shea Stadium concert and many others.
There are places I remember all my life Though some have changed Some forever, not for better Some have gone and some remain All these places have their moments Of lovers and friends I still can recall Some are dead and some are living In my life I loved them all From “In My Life” by Lennon and McCartney 1965.

BURLINGTON – Citing his desire to continue growing the economy, improving public schools and attracting new businesses to North Carolina, State Senator Rick Gunn (R-Alamance) announced Wednesday he will seek re-election to the North Carolina Senate in 2014. Gunn represents Alamance and portions of Randolph County in Senate District 24. "Over the past three years, we have put North Carolina on a path to unprecedented growth, job creation and prosperity,” Gunn said. “Our initiatives – including tax, transportation, and regulatory reform – have drawn praise throughout the state and the country and have helped produce our lowest unemployment rate in years. We have reformed our education system to ensure our students succeed and prepare our labor force for 21 century jobs. I want to continue finding creative ways to grow our economy and create employment opportunities for our citizens.” Gunn serves as Co-Chair of the Senate Commerce Committee and also serves on the Transportation, Insurance, and Program Evaluation Committees. Gunn said he is honored to be recognized for his pro-business efforts by prominent nonpartisan associations. He is one of 25 legislators in the nation to be awarded the "Champion of Small Business Award" by the National Coalition for Capital at their 2013 Annual Conference. He also was selected to represent the North Carolina General Assembly at the National Conference of State Legislatures Annual Jobs Summit."It is a privilege to serve the fine folks of Alamance and Randolph Counties", Gunn said. The high winds of Hurricane Irene during August, 2011, are still felt by families in eastern North Carolina. We will work with Methodist Disaster Recovery again to build a house for a family trying to recover from the disastrous storm.
!
The client's name is Diane Clark. She is a widow. She has a job and works every day. Her home was severely damaged by Hurricane Irene; the roof was blown off and caused extensive water damage. Once we made our construction assessment we determined it was beyond repair. Diane moved in with her dad and older sister (who is on dialysis) after the storm. Last year Diane's father died and because of circumstances the two daughters were not able to keep their father’s property (it was lost to the bank). This home that we are building will replace the home that Diane lost but it will also be a home for her older sister to live out her life. This project is a very worthy cause and we have taken it on even though the funds are not all available. We are seeking to partner with other groups to provide both funds and volunteer labor to make this home a reality. These two ladies have been down in spirit for so long and it is now a wonderful thing to see their spirits lifted. I am confident that God will provide all that is necessary to fulfill what is needed to complete this home. We look forward to our partnership together to make this home a reality and bring Glory to God.Leave North Carolina Yearly Meeting Office Sunday, March 16, at 2:00 PM. Return Friday, March 21. We will stop around 5:30 in Washington, NC, on the way to Aurora, for Sunday night supper at the Golden Corral.
• Lodging will be at the Methodist Disaster Recovery Aurora Facility, "The Church of the Holy Cross". (If you use 800 Main Street on GPS you will get there) Aurora, NC. CHAMBER of COMMERCE WINTER LUNCHEON
Patterson Cottage Museum Corner
by: Teresa Bruchon
!
-Brenda Heindl, Committee Member
The Liberty Chamber of Commerce held our Winter Luncheon at The First Baptist Church in Liberty on February 19th. We didn't realize the weather was going to take us so seriously, when we had named and originally planned the luncheon for February 12th.
We had to reschedule due to the snow.
All current and past chamber members, as well as sponsors were invited to join us for a lovely and delicious meal that was prepared by the Baptist Ladies of the church. These ladies went “above and beyond” to accommodate us.
Pastor Brian Harrington welcomed everyone and blessed
the meal.
Ron Johnson the current president of the chamber opened by thanking the church for hosting this event. First Baptist, just recently joined the Liberty Chamber of Commerce. We are so fortunate to have this business / ministry relationship. Churches are such a vital asset to the business community. Although, we do not necessarily measure success in the same way, we share a common goal....to make Liberty a better place.
Ron introduced the current board members in attendance; Teresa Bruchon, Kevin Bowman, Stephanie Gee, Don Herndon, Ray Hudson, Gail Morgan, Tabitha Schenkel and Carol Wall. Although, these folks make up the chamber board, the real, and most important chamber members are the Local Businesses; those that join, take part, and actively participate in and support the many chamber functions. Ron emphasized the importance of each business taking an active part in the chamber events this year. We are planning to continue our Third Thursday Block Parties through out the spring and summer months. These events will be promoted as “Business After Hours” events. Please come out and join us for some local music, socialize a bit, and make those business networking connections. Our next BIG Event will be the Annual Chamber Banquet to be held at Miracle Valley Event Center on Saturday March 22, starting at 5:30pm. There will be a Silent Auction, Delicious Dinner, Music provided by Southern Entertainment and a Community Update. Ticket price:$15.00 Call (336)622-4937.

Liberty Mercantile Plates
In a private collection is a very special pair of plates that highlight some of downtown Liberty’s history. The two plates are nearly identical to one another, other than the difference in size. On the front in the center of the plate is an image in blue of several windmills next to a body of water. On the water is a small sailing boat and there are small buildings below the windmill. Around the edge of the plate are four smaller patterns similar to the image on the interior of the plate. On the back of the plates, in gold lettering, are printed, “Compliments of LIBERTY MERCANTILE CO, Dealers in General Merchandise, The best goods for the least money, LIBERTY, N.C.” The Liberty Mercantile Company was organized in 1897 by Alfred Curtis. It stood near the corner of downtown where Carolyn’s store is, across from the theater. The store sold groceries, dry goods, shoes, ladies and men’s clothing, rugs, china, kerosene, and molasses. Caskets were also sold on the second floor. These plates were likely given to customers as a premium for their purchases at the store. It is not known where the plates were being made, but plates were being made in the late 1800s and early 1900s for merchants in England as well as here in America. The influence of the design likely came from old Dutch designs on Delft, or blue decorated tin-glazed pottery, that sometimes featured images like windmills. Each image was printed from fine engravings of the image, and melted onto the top of the glazed surface of pottery. Do you have any items made for stores downtown? We would love to see them!
The museum is closed for the year and will reopen in May 2014. Contact us if you are interested in seeing the Museum.
