Are You In?

Great News For Liberty

By: Andy Clapp I am a huge college basketball fan. With March Madness beginning, I find myself even more focused on the college basketball world as we await the beginning of the conference tournaments and then the NCAA tournament. This year, I have worked on four devotional books that will be published by Burnett Young Books, each one a devotional based on a college basketball team. There is definitely no time like March, where we see the thrills of the upsets and wait with anticipation to see if our team’s name is called when the Selection Show takes place. Though the excitement of the tournament draws so many eyes and so much attention as the world watches to see who gets in, there is a question that arises for each of us in this time of year. Are we in? If this life was over today, if we were to draw our last breath tonight, are we sure that we are in with Christ, that our name is in the Book of Life? The magnitude of what comes from the answer to that very question teaches us that there is no way that we want to leave it up to chance when the last breath is drawn. Every year, there are teams that feel like they should be in the tournament that are left out. We see their agony and we hear their frustration in their reaction. They were so close but when the names were revealed, theirs was not mentioned. How sad would it be to have lived our whole lives thinking that we were going to be in heaven only to find out that our names were not in the book, that we had failed to fully accept the Lord. Most know the Romans Road to the faith. They can recite the Scriptures that say that speak to the sins of humanity and their price. We read Romans 5:8, 10:9, and 10:13 and agree with what they say. We say a prayer and we walk on with our lives, but what if there was more to the faith? Knowing we are in is knowing what Christ said and following those words. Jesus said in Mark 8, “If anyone wants to be My follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.” (Mark 8:34 HCSB) Have we done this? When we stand before the Lord, we want to be recognized as one of His followers. The proof is in our lives, in how we listened to His Word and applied it to our lives. He said that His followers would deny themselves, take up their crosses, and follow Him, dying to the world to live for more in Jesus. If we stood before the Lord today, would we be able to say that we had lived by those words? Would our lives give the evidence of being what Jesus said was the life, actions, and attitude of one of His followers? Would we be in?

Southern States Raising Funds for FFA

Online ordering coming soon!

Available in Oil, Daily Dose Oil, Pain Cream, and Edibles

Farm supply retailer Southern States Cooperative is holding a month-long fundraiser to help raise money for FFA at the local, state, and national levels. Southern States is holding its annual FFA Paper Emblem campaign throughout the month of March where customers can donate $1 or more at checkout and sign their name on an “I’m Supporting FFA” emblem that will be displayed in the store’s window. “Young farmers are the future of food production,” says Jeff Stroburg, president and CEO of Southern States. “As a farmer-owned cooperative, we take tremendous pride in investing in the young farmers of America and will continue to contribute to their development as future leaders in agriculture.” Half of all funds collected will benefit a local FFA chapter in the community; the other half will benefit the National FFA Foundation. Ten percent of all donations will go to the state FFA Association. "We are deeply appreciative of Southern States and the company’s assistance to raise financial support for FFA and heighten community awareness about our organization," said National FFA Foundation President, Molly Ball. "Money donated by Southern States customers will help ensure that we’re able to continue to develop students’ leadership, growth and career success potential." The campaign kicks off March 1st. For more information and participating locations, visit southernstates.com/FFA. Southern States Cooperative sells farm and home supplies, including fertilizer, seed, livestock feed, animal health supplies, propane and lawn care supplies.

Local students place in SkillsUSA competition, advance to state

Four local high school students recently placed at the SkillsUSA North Carolina Southwest Regional Rally at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College in Salisbury Friday, Feb. 15, and advanced to the state conference. Randolph Early College High School’s Amanda Frances Martin placed first in Automotive Tool ID, while John Black and Jose Castro, both from Asheboro High School, took second and fourth, respectively, in Automotive Service Beginner High School. AHS’ Seth Knapp placed fifth in Automotive Service Technology High School. “We have a great winning tradition started here at Randolph Community College’s Automotive Service and Technology Program,” Randolph Community College Automotive Systems Technology Department Head Don Ashley said. “Our students put their skills to the test during the competitions and were very successful. The students represented our school and community with pride.” All four advanced to the SkillsUSA NC State Conference, slated for April 9-11 at the Greensboro Coliseum and Koury Convention Center. Over 2,700 students, instructors, industry members, and volunteers will be on hand for the largest showcase of Career and Technical Education in the state. Nearly 2,300 high school and postsecondary students will be competing in over 120 different skills and leadership contests. RCC students will join the four high schoolers at the competition in April. Transportation costs and registration fees were paid through the RCC Foundation with funds provided by Richard Petty’s Garage. RCC Automotive Systems Technology Instructor Ronald Morris also was instrumental in the students’ and schools’ involvement with SkillsUSA. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry working together to ensure that America has a skilled workforce. The Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) is recognized as an integral part of the classroom by the Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE).

Home and Garden Improvements That Will Benefit Local Wildlife (StatePoint) When it comes to changing the world, your own backyard is a great place to start. As you make home improvements, consider their potential to benefit local wildlife that travel in and around your property. Here are a few important steps you can take. Plant Native Species By planning native species exclusively in your garden and yard, you will be promoting a healthy local ecosystem while providing proper nourishment and a natural habitat for visiting wildlife, whether that be insects, birds or furry creatures. Because native plant species are meant to thrive in your local climate, they will require less maintenance, which means a beautiful yard with less stress. Prevent Bird Strikes You may not realize it, but your home poses a risk to birds. Window strikes are common among many species of migrating birds, and millions of wild birds are killed annually flying into windows. However, a simple home improvement project can make your home safer for birds. Birds can see certain light frequencies that humans can’t, so by applying UV decals and UV liquid to your home’s windows and sliding glass doors, you can make windows visible to birds in a way that won’t obstruct your own view. “Protecting birds adds beauty to your garden, is good for the environment and most importantly, saves lives,” says Spencer Schock, founder of WindowAlert, a company that offers UV decals and UV Liquid. The UV decals and liquid from WindowAlert have been proven to effectively alter the flight path of birds to prevent window strikes. The coating will look like etched glass to the human eye, but be very visible to a bird. As UV reflectivity may fade over time, it’s important to replace the decals and liquid every four months. Application techniques can be found by visiting WindowAlert.com. Build a Bird house Add beauty to your yard with a wooden bird house. Find a design you love or get creative and craft your own, using your own home’s architecture for inspiration. A strategically placed bird house -- either within three feet of a window or over 30 feet away -- will help avoid bird strikes. Be a good neighbor -- not just to the other humans. Make improvements to your home that will help protect both local and migratory wildlife.

Your Home is Your Castle: How to Protect it Through the Years (StatePoint) For many people, owning a home is the American dream, and the single biggest financial investment they will ever make. With the stakes so high, in addition to picking out the perfect property, it’s critical to have the right insurance. While homeowners may start out with the right amount when they first purchase their home, over time, their policy can become outdated. Why? One big reason is inflation. “Labor and building material costs go up over time, which means that if your home were destroyed by a fire or natural disaster, for example, and you had to rebuild it in today’s dollars, it would very likely cost much more,” said Bob Buckel, vice president and product manager, Erie Insurance. “That’s why we recommend that all homeowners get ‘guaranteed replacement cost’ coverage.” In addition to making sure your insurance keeps up with inflation, experts also recommend homeowners reach out to their insurance agent when:

• You remodel: 2019 is expected to be a popular year for remodeling, according to the Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity. Whether it’s putting on an addition or finishing the basement, be sure the extra square footage and finishes are listed on your policy. Why? If something were to happen (think: fire, water damage, etc.), you’ll want your insurance policy to provide enough funds for everything to be repaired or replaced. • You make changes to outdoor space: The same is true with any remodeling to your outdoor space. The addition of an in-ground pool or fence can add value to your home. There are also liability concerns associated with certain equipment, such as a swimming pool or trampoline. Unfortunately, at least 148 children drowned in swimming pools last summer and many more were injured, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. You’ll want to make sure you’re properly covered in the event of an accident. • You install a security system: You may qualify for a discount on your insurance if you’ve recently installed a security system. One study by the Electronic Security Association (ESA) looked at the 10 largest insurance companies and found many offer worthwhile premium discounts. • You start a home-based business: Whether you have a side hustle or draw a full-time income from a home-based business, you may not have the right coverage in place. For example, if you’re selling LuLaRoe clothing and there’s a fire, your merchandise might not be covered since typical policies don’t always cover home-based businesses. You’ll most likely need an incidental business endorsement. Coverage from Erie Insurance could cost about $30 to $70 per year.

• You acquire valuables: Homeowners insurance covers your belongings, but generally only up to a certain dollar amount per item. So, if you acquire an expensive item, such as an engagement ring, a fur or a valuable artwork, you should talk to your insurance agent about adding special coverage. You may also need to provide a receipt or appraisal.

Ways to Boost Your Home’s Curb Appeal (StatePoint) When it comes to your home, you only get one chance to make a great first impression -- and that takes place before anyone ever steps inside, making curb appeal upgrades an effective way to beautify your home while boosting its value. Here are some great ways to enhance curb appeal that will give you a great return on investment, according to Remodeling Magazine’s 2019 Cost Vs. Value Report. Garage Door Replacement Whether you want your garage door to take center stage or provide a demure complement to your home’s overall exterior, the right selection will make a great visual impression. Luckily there are a growing number of ways to personalize a garage door. New color options, which include two-tone combinations, are growing in popularity, and an expanding array of panel designs can help you work in harmony with your home’s architectural style.

mailto:info3@unitsnc.com

But know that this is not just any cosmetic upgrade. A new garage door has the potential to improve your family’s safety and comfort, providing safety features not found in older models, while reducing heat and cold transfer for lower energy bills. Manufactured Stone Veneer A manufactured stone veneer project can enhance the aesthetic appeal of any space, indoors or out, and can be customized to suit your needs and style. When applied to a home exterior, this project has an impressively high return on investment at 95 percent, according to the 2019 Cost vs. Value Report. Maximize this upgrade by opting for high-quality materials that look like authentic stone, even upon careful inspection. For example, the choices available from ProVia are molded and colored to produce a realistic, dramatic effect, mimicking stones from unique geographic regions in a range of cuts. Their online resources, which can be found at provia.com, include design ideas and tools for selecting harmonious color groupings, helping you make the best choices for your home. Siding Replacement Of all the home updates that will boost your curb appeal, new siding has the third highest return on investment, according to the report. When making this upgrade, consider materials wisely. Thanks to its overall low cost, ease of installation, minimal maintenance required and longterm durability, vinyl is the most popular home siding material. Whether you opt for insulated, traditional or decorative siding, this can be a great way to give your home a high-impact facelift that’s well worth the cost.

We live by a code of values With nearly 30 years in the HVAC field, Scott Etchison has seen every side of the industry. With experience in service, maintenance, installation, sales, and management, he has used his knowledge to form a HVAC company above the rest. After working for several companies, Scott took his first step into owning his own HVAC company. Scott started Alyains Heating and A/C, named after his 2 daughters Alyssa and Ainsley. Alyains catered to Liberty and surrounding areas for 6 years. With Growth comes change. Scott outgrew his shop at his home and wanted to expand to a larger market but keep the same values of a hometown business. In December of 2017 Scott opened his first Aire Serv Franchise. Aire Serv of Liberty. Scott selected Aire Serv because they have a proven business model, a code of values that aligned with his own and their products offer warranties that protect the customer. With Aire Serv being a national brand, with over 200 locations, it was important to Scott to form his business as a company that provides over and beyond customer satisfaction. With heating and cooling being a large investment to homeowners, getting exactly what the customer needs , a good value, and providing them with someone they can trust and be comfortable with to come into their homes, is Scotts image for his Company. Over the past year, Aire Serv of Liberty has grown into a full time, family owned and operated company. With his wife Brandy and daughter Alyssa along with 9 other full time employees, Aire Serv has become exactly what Scott had envisioned. We live by a code of values. Values that make Aire Serv a trusted and respected HVAC company now all across central North Carolina. Values that will continue to allow Aire Serv of Liberty to grow and always keep the same business ethic in place.

Hospice of Randolph Night at Snyder Farms Restaurant

Wayne Snyder, Snyder Farms Restaurant & Catering

Ph 336-795-0054 / Cell 336-404-9791

The public is invited to come out and be part of a special community fundraiser at Snyder Farms Restaurant this Saturday, March 2, 2019, 4 to 9pm. This event will be Hospice Night with “all” proceeds from the evening going to benefit Hospice of Randolph County! Hospice of Randolph provides care in homes and facilities as well as the Randolph Hospice House, a specialized hospice facility which opened in 2011 and was built especially for terminally-ill patients here in Randolph County and surrounding communities who are not able to be cared for at home. It is a place of comfort and peace with a professional clinical staff on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Several Hospice Team members will be assisting with serving & refilling drinks, helping to clean off tables and networking with the customers while sharing info on their services! This year’s event is dedicated in loving memory of Snyder Farms’ own Wayne Snyder who passed away in December. All money raised during the evening will be donated to Hospice of Randolph in his name. Since this is a fundraising benefit, diners are requested to plan ahead and pay for dinner that evening by cash or checks instead of debit or credit cards to help limit transactions fees. Checks can be made payable to Hospice of Randolph County. Prices for the fundraising dinner are: Adults: $10.75 which includes Country-style Buffet and Huge Salad Bar, Children 6-12 yrs. old- $6.00, and children under 6- $2.99. To be part of this night of community fellowship, simply bring your family and come out to eat at Snyder Farms located at 2880 Beckerdite Road, just 2 miles off of Hwy 311 in Sophia, NC.

Local Teen Raises Money For Animal Shelter

Volume 17 Issue 3

5 Ways to Upgrade Your Home with New Tech

My name is Téa Turner. I am a 15-year-old student who attends Chatham Charter School in Siler City NC. I am a member of the Student LIFT Group out of Asheboro NC. Every year as new members come into the LIFT program they are asked to perform a service project that will benefit somewhere in Randolph County. This year for my Student LIFT Project I decided to host a Pancake Breakfast at the Liberty Legion Hut in which all of the proceeds will go to the Randolph County Animal Shelter. By having this Pancake Breakfast, I was able to raise over $2000 that would all go towards supplies for the shelter. With this money, I purchased 26 dog leashes, 2 cat toys, 36 tennis balls, 12 towels, 24 dog beds, 12 gallons of Clorox, 2350 pounds of dog food, 897 pounds of cat food, 60 pounds of dog treats, 325 pounds of kitty litter. This was the largest amount of supplies that one person has ever donated at one time to the shelter. I wanted to thank all that came and supported me in this process by attending and eating at the Pancake Breakfast. Everything that was donated went to a great cause.

(StatePoint) New technology has the power to make your home safer, more comfortable and better suited to your family’s needs. So, if you’re planning to make some home updates, consider these great ideas for incorporating the latest technologies. 1. Smart lock. Give your neighborhood watch group a deserved break and consider investing in smart lock technology. You’ll be able to control your home's entry points from anywhere through a compatible app, which will also notify you of possible break-ins and tampering. Whether you have guests staying at your place and need to let them in before you get home, or you forgot to lock your front door before leaving the house, a smart lock can offer you convenience and peace of mind. 2. Full sound. No matter the size of your home, you can create the ambiance of a concert hall with the latest technology. Even the slimmest electronic pianos today have the potential to retain a sophisticated keyboard touch and authentic timbre of a grand piano. For example, the new design of the Casio Privia PX-S1000 keyboard, reproduces the individual response characteristics of each of the 88 keys on a grand piano and its Bluetooth audio playback feature allows you to connect to your device and play along with your favorite songs. 3. Greater climate control. Heading to the airport but forgot to adjust your thermostat? Want your home to be a comfortable temperature when you arrive home from work? Next-generation, smart thermostats offer you the ability to get a better handle on climate control while potentially lowering your utility bills. 4. The right light. You can set the right mood for the right occasion in every room of your house by creating programmed scenarios through a smart lighting system. A smart lighting app can also improve home security, making your home looked lived in while you are away. 5. Beefed up entertainment. You can go beyond a standard home theater and gaming area with the installation of a projector that offers a great quality picture, long lasting-brightness and a fully connectable interface. The SLIM Seris of LampFree Projectors from Casio, for example, require little to no setup time and provide projection at maximum brightness in as few as five seconds, for a truly immersive home theater experience.

Service Since 1904 Home Updates that Pay Off (StatePoint) Whether you’re remodeling for a fresh take on an old style or contemplating a new build, there are choices you can make that will definitely pay off, say experts. To add value to your project, consider these recommended tips from Stephen Quick of Stephen Alexander Homes, builder of the 2018 Coastal Virginia Magazine Idea House. Once an afterthought, lighting takes center stage in a home’s design. “Consider your lighting needs at the start of the project. Wait too long and it can become expensive to move or add lights,” advises Quick. When planning lighting basics, think of the design as a whole: choose your decorative lighting fixtures at the same time you choose recessed. A large fixture throws a lot of light, so keep adjacent recessed lights to a minimum. Dimming capabilities are a must, and Quick recommends using “smart” dimmers like Hubbell’s iDevice to customize the dimming range. The control offered by these dimmers means you can use larger statement lighting pieces with many bulbs to create amazing, but not overwhelming, spaces. Quick tends to use lighting with a classic foundation, but loves to play with the eclectic. Adding a bold piece that is “whimsical” in an unexpected area offers a surprising focal point, he says. “We’ve relied on Progress Lighting for twenty years,” says Quick. “Especially in the past few years, as they’ve taken giant leaps in design.” Stephen Alexander Homes incorporate “lifestyle focus” open floor plans as their signature look. Now, they are pioneering a new trend in home culinary spaces. Pantries are reimagined to not only be practical, but a spot to display the homeowner’s hobbies and interests. Think useful collectibles like olive oils, wine or beer. Lighting this room properly is a must, as the light needs to be functional, yet have an added element of drama to showcase the hobby. Beyond mere dollars and cents, make style choices based on the manufacturer rather than the component. As a builder, Quick starts with a “basket” of necessary elements, but it’s how they are applied that ultimately makes the design special. Consider engaging an interior designer. Even with a smaller remodel budget, hiring an expert who knows which brands give you the most bang for your buck is worth their fee. You’re more likely to end up with the look you want at a price that is worth the investment. Paint is one of the biggest design tools at your disposal. “A new coat of paint sets the tone for everything. Choosing the perfect colors can be hard, but paint companies are on target with the latest trends within the color spectrum, adding colors that hit the mark to give your spaces a fresh look,” says Quick. And if you don’t like the color once it’s on the walls? “Don’t be afraid to change it. Paint is not expensive. It’s more expensive to keep a look you don't like.” For design ideas, visit progresslighting.com/styles.

Cub Scout Pack 502 and Boy Scout Troop 502 and their leaders for all their help in Scouting for Food 2019 which benefited our Liberty Association of Churches Food Pantry. On Saturday, February 9, 2019, approximately 800 items weighing 737 pounds of food were delivered to the Food Pantry by the Scouts. Many thanks to them for this annual boost to our supplies to help those in our community who might otherwise go hungry. Thanks also should go to several churches, businesses, civic groups, and individuals who make regular donations of food items or funds to the Food Pantry. Thanks to our partnership with Feeding America through the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina (in Winston-Salem), we are able to stretch financial donations quite the distance!! We can always use donations of canned vegetables, fruits, meats, pasta sauce, spaghetti pasta, cream soups, peanut butter, jelly, cereals, grits, oatmeal, powdered milk packets, etc. David Hobson, Liberty Association of Churches (LAC) Vice-President Cell: 336/202-9089 LAC Office: 336/622-8312
