The Randolph County Economic Development Corporation released its 2016 Annual Report today, and celebrated a very positive year for economic development success. Highlights of the year include announcements of more than $52,340,000 in new and expanded industrial investment and the creation of 442 new jobs. They show a strengthening economy with investment up by 450% and more than double the jobs announced in 2015. During the year, 15 companies reported expanded job creation and new investment in communities across Randolph County. New job creation will generate $14 million in annual income through direct employment. When completed, the investment will generate more than $342,827 in new tax revenues annually to Randolph County. The projects impacted 550,737 square feet of real estate and will secure $1,021,000 million in grants for building renovations, water and sewer. Also in 2016, the Randolph EDC made 168 visits to existing businesses and industries and responded to 125 company specific projects and referrals. Growth occurred in target industry sectors as well as in legacy textile and furniture industries. Companies including Method Sourcing in Archdale, GFM Industries in Liberty and Prime Syntex in Trinity relocated to Randolph County, citing a great location, access to suppliers, available workforce, and vacant buildings. Expansions brought new construction at Hafele in Archdale, Jowat in Trinity and Petty's Garage in Level Cross. As the year ended, expansion projects at Younts Machinery and Pilgrim's Pride triggered grants for public infrastructure. Progress continued on the Greensboro Randolph Mega Site during 2016 with 1500 acres controlled by three owners, site certification by KPMG, and the rezoning of the site. Infrastructure planning is underway and the City of Greensboro was awarded an $8.4 million grant for water and sewer. Aggressive marketing outreach to site consultants and target companies has begun and a new promotional video featuring NASCAR great Richard Petty was released. EDC Board Chairman John Grey of The Wooten Company praised the partnership between the EDC and local governments and supporting allies for the solid results in 2016.

Happenings at the Liberty Senior Center Quilting and Simple Sewing Classes By: Ellen Lineberry
The Liberty Senior Center started a quilting and simple sewing class in the fall of 2015. The first project was pot holders. This simple sewing project was a great way to learn how to quilt with small stitches. After learning how to do quilt stitches, the class started working on a group project. They learned how to measure, lie out and cut fabric for quilt squares. Learning how to make a simple quilt pattern was next, by sewing four squares together and alternating the direction of the next four squares in the opposite direction. After sewing all the squares together, the class learned how to stretch the quilt onto a quilting frame. And the task of quilting began. The class quickly learned to use thimbles to protect their fingers from their quilting needles. After many hours of quilting, the binding, or border, was added for the finishing touch. In addition to working on the class project, individual lap quilts, placemats, and stuffed toy kittens were made by the members of the class. The class meets twice per month, 2nd and 4th Thursday’s afternoon, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Jackie Brown and Bobbie Kidd are the quilting instructors with many years of quilting experience. Join the sewing bee and enjoy the fellowship and creativity. For more information, call Kaffy Reynolds at 336-622-5844.

Amor Furniture & Bedding, LLC, a producer of promotional upholstery and bedding, has purchased its new 50,000 sq ft. building at 1776 Pleasant Ridge Road, Ramseur, NC. The purchase marks the completion of its move from Staley, NC where it had out grown its leased facilities. This also reflects 7 years of exponential growth in the stationary upholstered living room furniture industry. The move was necessary to Ramseur to meet its growing demand under its Southern Comfort and Amor Furniture brands. Amor Furniture now dominates the low end promotional furniture market and is the market leader in this niche. Having abandoned the low end market long ago, competitors like Ashely Furniture, United Industries, Hughes Furniture remain and compete in the middle and high end market exclusively, This was a vacuum that Amor Furniture has filled.

Spiro Laousis, its president, says "the timing is perfect for expansion and growth right now given the new business friendly and domestic manufacturing preferences of the new administration." The trend over the last few years has been for retailers to import goods from overseas such as China and Vietnam instead of buying here. He says, "It's time to put the Made in USA label back in vogue. While pricing and quality has been at issue when deciding whether to import or buy domestically, Amor Furniture has made every effort to make the MONDAY decision easier for the retailer. Amor Furniture, like other domestic factories, offers both basic price and quality competitiveness with an overseas factory. However, to offset any perceived advantage an overseas competitor may have, the company offers 1 week deliveries on its own trucks. This directly offsets waiting 2 months and paying 4 thousand 7:00 p.m. Rev. Jonathan Lewis dollars on average for a container for freight from China. It's the Special Music: Greensboro Christ company's philosophy of price, delivery, speed, and quality for the benefit of its network of mom and pop furniture stores that has TUESDAY brought them to this point in business.

The company produces less than 10 models of furniture and employs 7:00 p.m. upholsterers who manufacture the Rev. Nate Marriner sofa or loveseat completely, from Special Music: beginning to end. This contrasts Siler City First with other companies who employ a "production line" or "assembly line" format to produce furniture. This production philosophy allows more personalized attention the piece being produced and allows the company to boast that each piece is WEDNESDAY to hand made. The company produces all the furniture to stock, in other words, all 6:00 p.m. Fellowship production goes to inventory. Then, each customer order is filled by selecting the ordered items from available stock. This is a trade secret that allows Amor Furniture to keep up with all its voluminous orders and allows each customer the ability to have their order very personalized. It's a win-win for both customer and manufacturer. The company has a sister company, Casa Furniture, Inc., which are retail stores in Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. 7:00 p.m. Rev. Sid Wheatley Special Music: Ramseur First

Amor Furniture is looking to expand its employee base at this location and will be hiring over 30 new employees in Randolph County alone in the next few months. All positions will require some previous experience in furniture from sewing to upholstery. Duke Energy Announces Transmission Line Corridor
SINGLE FARM
In June 2016, the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite Foundation announced its plans to partner with Duke Energy to conduct a comprehensive siting study to identify a new transmission line corridor that would minimize impacts to the community and provide a reliable source of electricity to the megasite. The siting study process is a first step to furnish the 1,500-acre megasite with a reliable and efficient source of electrical power. Duke Energy held two public information hearings in 2016 on July 11 and September 13 to share information and gather public input. Comments were also received by mail and via an online portal. Duke Energy took great care to review and carefully consider all of the community input and expert analysis and, based on extensive evaluation, they have selected the final corridor for the future Greensboro-Randolph Megasite transmission line. They believe the final corridor minimizes overall impacts to property owners, businesses, communities and the environment. Landowners who fall within the proposed corridor of the selected route are being notified this week, along with property owners within close proximity of the selected route (1,320 feet). Landowners who were initially contacted because they were within one of the 14 potential study areas for the project are also being informed that their property will not be impacted. The final corridor can be viewed in detail on an interactive map at http:// power-viz.com/grmegasite/ Questions from customers can be directed to: CarolinasTransmissionEnhancements@duke-energy.com 800.365.8979 (toll-free), media questions should be directed to the 24 hour media line 800-559-3853. The Greensboro-Randolph Megasite is strategically located in the Heart of North Carolina, approximately 30 miles southeast of the City of Greensboro, adjacent to Highway 421 and within 10 miles of I-40. This 1500 acre rail-served site is strategically positioned to support a high-impact industrial investment in advanced manufacturing. Partners in the project include Randolph County, North Carolina Railroad, the Greensboro Randolph Megasite Foundation and the City of Greensboro.

Randolph Co. NC Service Dog Support Group There’s a NEW DOG (Support Network, that is…) IN TOWN! Recently a few folks who are actively using Service Dogs met up to kick off a SUPPORT GROUP. Glenn and his dog Onyx have been meeting regularly with Beth Angel and her dog Mongo. They talk about problems they face and how to promote the use of Service Dogs locally. A few weeks ago, they were joined by two other dog teams, Lisa with her dog Merrell and Hilda with her Service Dog in training, Sadie. Hilda and Beth Angel are veterans; Glenn and Lisa are civilians. All of the dogs have been trained (or are in training officially) and these dogs were tested by different agencies. All of our dogs are different breeds. The group is meeting at different locations on different dates, and Glenn set up a page on social media to keep channels open. There is no training agenda. The group was established to encourage and support folks who need and use Service Dogs in Randolph County. They are seeking other active service Dog teams to participate. Service Dog Handlers must maintain high standards and follow strict protocol with their working dogs. There have been many people claiming their dogs are Service dogs when they are in fact not actual working dogs. This causes problems for those who use legitimately trained, tested, registered and evaluated Service Dogs. There are hundreds of training hours involved, and regulated health standards (shots, micro-chipping, grooming), Obedience and Public Access requirements to meet. For more information on this Support Group, please visit FB/ Randolph Co. NC Service Dog Support Group, email Glenn at Hollywood71@triad.rr.com or call/text Beth Angel at 863-241-4740.

Tom’s Place
The Liberty Leader Newspaper
Volume 15 Issue 3
By Don Herndon One of Liberty’s most iconic eating spots in the 50s, 60s, and 70s was Tom’s Place. Located at what is now Liberty Oil Co.’s office, Tom’s was a booming, and often raucous local beer joint and café. We think the building was constructed in the 1940s and was initially a store. Others say it may have been a small manufacturing facility. After Liberty voted beer in during 1951, Tom Reitzel bought it and had a café that also sold beer. The chair factories, hosiery mills and veneer Picture Of Tom’s Place 1960 companies were booming in the 1950s, and Tom had a brisk lunch business serving locals from the town and the close by factories. through the 70s and One resident told me, “They served early 80s. Awesome Finds & Gifts And Owner Celebrate 10 Years
Mama Carol Wall loves to camp and be outdoors. Her love of camping led her to a beautiful lake on the outskirts of the cozy little town of Liberty. She quickly fell in love with the area, so when the opportunity to become part of this community came up, she seized it. She purchased a small Gift Shop located on Swannanoa Ave. With no experience in retail yet craving a change, she started to fill the tiny store with items that she enjoyed. Awesome Finds became the store to go to when you wanted that perfect vintage gift or tie dye clothing. Carol brought in items from local artists and you can now find locally made pottery, paintings, wreaths, jewelry and other unique creations. Her keen eye for funky, interesting items led the store to outgrow it's original location within the first year. She moved across the street to a much larger retail space and continued to fill it up. This month we celebrate 10 years of Awesome Finds. Along with her husband Duane, you will find Carol behind the counter every day that Awesome Finds is open and she loves to talk to anyone who enters and tell them about local events and businesses. She hands out maps and recommends where to find the best burger. Everyone leaves feeling like they are her new favorite customer. She is very involved in the local community, she has served on the Chamber of Commerce and helped plan events for Liberty and the downtown area. Last year she embarked on a new event called Celebrate Liberty MayFest, to bring people into our little town and help them discover all that we have to offer, while celebrating the beginning of the summer season. This will be the second year for MayFest and Carol hopes it will continue for many years to come. Join Mama Carol and many others, including food vendors, local bands and craft vendors on May 20th, from 10am-6pm on Swannanoa Street.

Fueling Your Body and Brain In January I wrote about the positive brain benefits of rest and last month about the exercise benefits to the brain now I am tackling a much more challenging topic, nutrition. The answer to the question of what to eat is simple and most of you think you know the answer but just cannot follow through on what you think you know to be right because you think you lack willpower. Your willpower is probably not the problem it is likely the food you are eating. First you should know that I have been thinking about this topic for over 30 years. I went to school for and became a dietitian before I went to medical school so I do have formal training on the topic and have studied the workings of the brain and the human body. The trouble is that much of what I learned in school is false. I will never forget one of my professor’s words during my first days of medical school, “Fifty percent of what we teach you is false, we just do not know which fifty percent that is.” In other words, my professor was telling me that medical research is advancing and things the medical profession believed at the time would turn out to be false as new research advanced. My teachers told me that I needed to know how to evaluate research as my medical career progressed and incorporate into my practice the true scientifically based treatments. Currently research proving that changes in diet prevents and cures disease including diseases of the brain are being ignored, if not covered up, in conventional medical education and thus this valuable information is not being communicated to the public. There are thousands of research papers published every month. There is so much that it is impossible to keep up with the literature. Michael Greger in his book, “How not to Die”, has put much of the research on nutrition together in a reader-friendly format (2015). What is being ignored or covered up that could change healthcare dramatically by preventing and curing a plethora of diseases? What is the key to fuel and optimize your body and brain? It is not portion control, carb counting, or calorie counting. The key is to feed the body what the body was designed to eat. Plants, the key is to eat plants, a wide variety of unprocessed plants. It is as simple as that. Eat whole plant foods and nothing else. Did you know that the only diet so far that has been shown to reverse heart disease, the number one cause of death in the United States, the only diet to ever open clogged arteries in the heart, is a whole food exclusively plant diet that is low in fat and high in carbohydrate? Dean Ornish used a whole food plant based diet in his landmark study and obtained dramatic results (Ornish et al, 1998). The brain has many more blood vessels than the heart does. If a plant based diet unclogs arteries in the heart, then it makes sense that it does the same all over the body including the brain. A critical review reported that there is convincing evidence that eating fruits and vegetables prevents chronic diseases such as hypertension, blood vessel disease and stroke (Boeing, 2012). Researchers familiar with the results of all the studies to date agree that exclusively eating a variety of plant foods provides adequate nutrition and prevents disease as evidenced by the American Nutrition and Dietetics Association statement that a plant diet is adequate for all stages of life (2009). The Adventist Health Study compared people eating only plants to people who include dairy and eggs and to people who include meat in their diet. Only the vegan group (eliminating eggs, dairy, and meat) were on average at a healthy body weight as measured by body mass index (BMI) (Orlich et al, 2013). In consumption calculations of dietary intake in this study researchers found that all groups were eating the same number of calories every day around 1800 calories. The group that included meat in their diet ate an average of 1884 calories and had a BMI the highest of all groups, 28, and the vegan group ate 1897 calories and had a BMI of 24 (Orlich et al, 2013). The vegan group ate about the same number of calories as the meat eating group but weighed less. Other studies have shown increased depression in those with a higher BMI (Istvan, 1992). In a study looking at aging and the incidence of dementia researchers found that daily fruit and vegetable intake lowered the risk of dementia (Barberger-Gateau, 2007). Another study showed that increased saturated fat intake (the fat found in animal products such as dairy, eggs and meat) correlated with increased dementia (Laitinen, 2006). What better way is there to eat a low saturated fat, high fruit, and vegetable diet than to eat exclusively whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables? The best research known on the topic to date shows that those who do live longer and healthier lives. The original diet is outlined in the Bible: And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food” Genesis 1:29. Ramseur Community Soldiers Of Mercy MM In Ramseur
A great bikers church is located at 7249 Jordan Rd (Hwy 64E) in Ramseur. The first thing that popped out when you go to learn more about this great gathering of Gods people is this, "Put on the full ARMOR of GOD, so that you will be able to stand FIRM against the schemes of the devil. [Ephesians 6:11]" They realize we are in war in this world. I had the pleasure of getting to know the Pastor Danny Street at the recent ribbon cutting of The Franklin House. This is one of their ministry outreach from the church and that being a transition house for those fighting drug addiction. The church started out in August 21 of 2012 with a mission statement that is so much needed in today's world. Their mission is, " Our mission is to set the captive free & break the bondages surrounding them. To express our own testimonies and overcome The Oppressor. (Satan)" The church made up mostly if bikers is open to all. They have done numerous bike rides to support numerous causes. They also have done Feeding In Randleman to rides for causes such as Veterans Memorial Ride to Bikers 4 Boobs. They have benefit ride coming up on April 8 in memory of James L Nichols. As you can see from the pictures this church has from the youngest to oldest in age. Also if you visit their Facebook Page " Soldiers of Mercy Motorcycle Ministry" you will see all the great things they have done. A great church to check out in the Ramseur area. They have services on Sunday at 10:30am and also bible study on Wednesday nights at 7:30pm.

Franklin House Ribbon Cutting In Ramseur I had the great honor of being at the ribbon cutting of "The Franklin House" in Ramseur which a ministry outreach of "The Soldiers Of Mercy MM" which is a bikers church housed in Ramseur. On the little street in Ramseur by the McDonalds is a small white house that just blends in with the other homes but there is so much more going on in that home that shows Gods hand at work. You see, The Franklin House is a transition housing for guys that have came off of detox of drugs and is waiting for rehabilitation housing to open up. The house manager, James Michael Martin , explained in once sentence what their goal is in this house and that was ,"we are here to transition menaces to the community to good citizens of the community." I told James wow that was cruel, menaces. James continue to share his story with me and enlighten my education on drug addiction. James shared in depth how he was once a menace to his community where he was from when he was hooked on drugs. He said you would do whatever it took to get what you need for next fix. That would be whether you stole or lied to get what you needed. James shared it is a real problem and the drug almost takes over your mind, you do not even realize what you are doing. James Michael is a success story as he has came out on the other side. He also shared their is consciences to your choices that even if you come out of the drug addiction you have to live with. This story James says is why he has such a passion to help with The Franklin House. James shared, " I have walked the path... just like Forest Gump in the movie shared he walked his path but mine was a lot harsher but I came out of it, this is why I know how to relate to these guys. This way I can bring guys in and show them the way. I am actually from Samaritan Colony that helped me out, this is why we use this as a guiding example." Well the way the house works is at this time they can house 6 people (currently 5 is living there now) and they are working on adding more rooms upstairs to be at a total of 8. They also run solely on their own funding, they get not government assistance. They took a lot from the program Samaritan Colony on how to set this house up. They take guys directly from detox and help them for about 2 weeks until they can get them in a treatment program. Their goals is to get them back on their own and a be a good citizen. James shared that he travels 80 to 100 miles per day getting guys to programs and meeting they have to be at every day. A dear friend that God allowed our paths to cross many years back, Buster Otwell, is the director and handles the affairs of the house. Buster attends The Soldiers Of Mercy MM Church and has a strong passion for this. Buster was the first to open my eyes to drug addiction. He allowed me to visit with him at Narcotic Addiction Meeting in Siler City when he got a milestone pin for being clean for years. This is where I was overwhelmed with the love in the room from each other as they helped carried each other day by day. The group welcome me with open arms. I was introduced to Dallas Street and learned that he was the pastor of The Soldiers Of Mercy MM. The most overwhelming and heart warming character I enjoyed from meeting Mr Street was that he was such a humbled pastor. I asked Dallas why the name Franklin House? Dallas shared, " The Franklin House is named after my sister's (Robin Street Criggers) late husband that died a few years back. His name was Frank "Frankie" Crigger. I gave my house for this mission to help others that struggle with drug addiction and our way of showing a memory to Frankie. I want this place to make a difference not only in the lives of the guys staying at the home but also for the community of Ramseur." Saturday Feb 25, the Ramseur/Eastern Randolph Chamber held a ribbon cutting for this house. The house originally opened up on Sept 12, 2016 but was dedicated on this day. As people gathered in front waiting for the 10 am hour for the ribbon cutting in the distance you heard the roll of thunder as a group of motorcycles drove up and parked in front of The Franklin House. Fayetteville Street in Asheboro (across from the Big Dipper & next to Avila’s Auto Sales& Service) The entrepreneurial spirit runs deep in the Bleattler Family line. The father/daughter team of Harrry/ Lois Ann Bleattler are stepping out on a family business venture to open ABBA’s Retail & Thrift Store in Asheboro this season. The Bleattlers will be joined by Beth Angel, an Asheboro veteran who has been in ministry with Lois for 15 years.ABBA’s Retail & Thrift Store will be featuring new retail and used (but not abused) goods ranging from furniture and collectables to clothing and housewares. Wheelin’ and Dealin’ runs in the family; Harry’s phone even sounds off with the “Sanford & Son” ringtone. His dad, “Gran’Pop Harry”, ran a Shoe Store, a General Store and a Junkyard back in ‘Jersey. Harry always had his own businesses as well, including operating a Vinyl & Siding company for over 35 years in Greensboro. Later, he moved his family to Liberty because they wanted to live in the country. They were on Beulah Church Road for about 8 years, until they relocated to Calabash, NC. Harry had worked putting in the cable in Asheboro years before moving to NC because he had always liked the area. He and his wife (also a Lois) will be returning to Randolph County we they sell their house. Lois Ann, also Northern Born & Southern Raised, shares her grandfather ‘s and her father’s love of “Junkin’”. Lois Ann and Beth Angel were dubbed “The Iron Maidens” while scraping in NJ and NC. Re-purposing salvage and uncovering hidden treasures has been financing their mission work for years. Beth Angel, a former dog trainer, works with service dogs and veterans locally. She and her service dog Mongo Sidekick will be working with Lois Ann at ABBA’s RETAIL & THRIFT STORE until Harry is here fulltime. He has been coming to town to help with construction projects at the store, and to bring up goods and items to sell.
