On Saturday April 13th the Liberty Chamber of Commerce celebrated 50 years of service to their community. Nestled on top of the hill; the Harvest House in Ramsuer was lit up and ready for the night. Over 150 guests gathered together for a night of reflection as well as celebration. Guests included Chamber Business Members and their employees, citizens of the general public, as well as Town and County OďŹƒcials; Mayor Fillmore York, Town Manager Will Doefer, Member of the town council, Vice Chairman David Allen, Chairman Darrel Frye, Commissioner Maxton McDowell, Commissioner Kenny Kid, and Commissioner Hope Haywood.
The evening started o great with a social hour that guests could fill up on appetizers, drink wine and beer, take pictures at the photo booth, and bid on over 34 silent auction items donated by local businesses. As everyone settled at their eloquently decorated tables a delicious steak and chicken dinner was served by the Harvest House. As with all great dinner events, entertainment was in order! The Liberty Chamber Board worked together to create a tribute video to the Chamber in honor of their 50 year anniversary! Produced by Randolph Communications; the video featured founding member Jim Parker, as well as past Presidents and current board members, who spoke about the history of the Chamber, where they would like to see it go, and how the Chamber helps the community and businesses grow.
Following dinner the awards ceremony proceeded. The Chamber Board gathered for the passing of the 2019 -2021 board positions as current President Shirley Pabst passed the Gavel to Amy Hutcherson who will now serve as the 2019 Chamber President. New Board Positions are as follows;
2019 Board Positions President: Amy Hutcherson
Vice President: Lisa Brower
Executive Director: Amanda Pabst
Treasurer: Shirley Pabst
Secretary: Kady Browne
Board member: Maria Turner
Board member: Kelly Raymond
New President Amy Hutcherson and Vice President Lisa Brower took over and began to give out the 2019 Business Awards. The speeches made you laugh as well as feel grateful to be surrounded by wonderful people who care so much for their community. Award Recipients are as follows; 2019 Award Recipients The first award of the night was extremely special and was given to the man who started it all! Honorable Jim Parker was awarded a plaque for his 50 years of dedication and service to the Chamber and the Liberty community as a whole. Business Person of the Year: Billy Hardin
Large Business of the Year: Pallet Express
Small Business of the Year: The Liberty Showcase Theater
Volunteer of the Year: Warren Dixon
Congratulations to all of the award recipients and thank you for your dedication to this incredible town we all call home. The night came to a close with dancing and music provided by Dj Cleve Caviness who announced the winners of the Silent Auction items as well as the lucky winner of the $1,000 cash drawing; Mike Fogleman.
To end, it was definitely a night to remember! One filled with joy and happiness as we looked back on the past and looked ahead to the future. The Liberty Chamber would like to thank the Harvest House for the use of their Facility as well as everyone who came out and showed support on this memorable year.
As we move ahead into the next 50 years, as always;
THANK YOU for your continued support and dedication to the Liberty Chamber.

COLOR RUN

The Liberty Leader Newspaper
8 – 11 AM
What is included with my registration? An awesome T-Shirt, bib number, sunglasses, bag of color, water and snack! Hopefully most of you can hold on to your BAG OF COLOR until the FINISH LINE.
Price goes up to $30 after May 8th Visit us on Facebook to view the event and buy tickets
AM
Facebook.com/LibertyVMG
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Do I need to be an athlete to join? Oh my goodness, NO. There are plenty of other great 5ks out there to test speed and performance. The LVMG Color Run event is all about a color-crazy day with friends and family. You can run, walk, crawl, or cartwheel if you wish!
Tickets $25
Do Kids have to register and pay? 6 and under are free and do not have to register... but they will not get a T-Shirt, bib number, sunglasses, or bag of color. T-Shirts will be for sale at the event. If we sell out of shirts at the event we can order more shirts for you to come pick up at a later date. Can I run with my dog/cat/turtle? That’s your call. We don’t mind... but you are 100% responsible for your pet and it’s actions.... and it’s waste. ;)
Can children participate? YES! The more the better... just PLEASE supervise them. If they can cover (running, jogging, walking, or strolling) the three miles of The LVMG Color Run course, they can absolutely participate in The LVMG Color Run!
How is the color administered along the course? You will see smiling faces along the course whose main goal is to douse you in colorful powder to ensure that you look like you ran through a beautiful rainbow by the time you cross the finish line.
How do I get my participant kit? You’ll get everything you need at check-in. 8:00 AM on race day!
Is The LVMG Color Run safe? Yes, and Gluten Free!
Will the color ruin clothes or running shoes? The color does mostly wash out after the event. As with anything dirty, the sooner you wash it the better. We suggest wearing items that you wouldn’t mind getting colorful. Are cameras and phones safe to have in the color zones? Our race photographers are generally fine shooting from a medium distance of 50 feet, but to be totally safe we always recommend covering cameras/phones with a protective dust wrap. Those colorful powder particles are sneaky and The LVMG Color Run is not liable for any damage that might be done to your camera! Is The LVMG Color Run timed? The LVMG Color Run 5k is not a timed event. Runners tend to take their sweet time out there and we realized no one really cares about their speed :) We suggest self-timing for anyone desiring a finish time.
Scan for more information
Are there refunds? If an event is held as advertised, we cannot issue refunds. The logistics of setting up and planning the event make it impossible. Just make sure you are good to go before signing up. If for some reason you can’t make it to race day, at least come to the Check-In Party, pick up your gear, and say hi to us! What if I am pregnant? It’s totally up to what you and your doctor decide. The powder is all certified non-toxic. We recommend wearing sunglasses or goggles, and a bandanna over your mouth and nose in the color zones just for extra protection. What happens if there is bad weather? A little rain won’t stop us! It even makes the color brighter! How does the color affect the inside of cars? Most people bring some towels for the insides of their cars, or a change of clothes just in case.

Tanner’s Revenge started when world traveling singer/songwriter, Mike Knowles settled down in North Carolina and formed a band in 2006 with Bass Player/Wife Melinda,. With a goal of making fun music people can dance to (and maybe even sing along with), they have seen many members come and go over the last 13 years…but the current lineup featuring Keyboardist/Vocalist Rachel Amick, Lead Guitarist/ Vocalist Robert “Peach Cobb Rob” Howie and Drummer Dylan Adams is the most Dynamic/Fun mix yet. Playing mostly original music, their styles zoom from Driving Rock and contemporary country, to whimsical swing and beach music, you never know what you may find yourself singing along to. They first played in Liberty for the Grand Opening of what was then the NEW Awesome Finds location, in 2007 and have been featured players at 4 previous Celebrate Liberty Concert showcases, as well as the Liberty Christmas Tree lighting, and several other community events. Tanner’s Revenge only plays Festivals, private parties and charity fundraisers due to the member’s extensive working schedules and other musical commitments. The company is a family business ran and owned by Travis (the Agent) and his wife Shelly. They are both natives of the town of Liberty; as are their families. Their mission is to be set apart by the quality of service they provide, their involvement and love for the community, and their knowledge of products and services that will help customers manage the risks of everyday life. Scouting For Food By: Hayden Parker Boy Scout Troop 502 Each year Liberty Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts Troop 502 participate in Scouting For Food. On a Saturday, the Cub Scouts go out and put door hangers on local homes in Liberty. The following Saturday, Boy Scouts go out and collect the food put out at the homes. The collected food is taken to The Liberty Association of Churches (LAC) Food Bank. It is then sorted into different categories and weighted by the scouts. The food is then ready to be given to local families in need. This year we collected 800 pounds of food. Thank you to the citizens of Liberty who donated food. Great Ways to Staycation During the Warmer Months (StatePoint) Whether you’re taking a staycation or just looking for some fun in the sun near home, check out these ideas for creating instant summer vibes: • Get Beachy: You don’t need to live near or travel to the shore to turn your backyard into an exclusive beach getaway. All you need are some lounge chairs, shades, SPF and your favorite magazines or page-turning novels. For a bit more active relaxation, invite some friends over for frisbee golf or set up a net and play “beach” volleyball. • Eat Light: When you eat better, you feel better. Stay refreshed in warm weather with fresh fruits, vegetables, superfoods and better-for-you fare. Look for local dining options that bring tropical flavors to you, such as Tropical Smoothie Cafe, a leading national fast-casual cafe. You can get five servings of fruits and vegetables with their popular Island Green smoothie, made with spinach, kale, mango, pineapple and banana. It’s good for you and tastes great. Another favorite for embracing the tropical vibe is the Bahama Mama, featuring strawberries, pineapple, white chocolate and coconut. Delicious wraps, flatbreads and sandwiches are great complements to a smoothie and good choices for those wanting to eat lighter fare this season. To learn more, visit tropicalsmoothiecafe.com. And remember, nothing speaks to the season like a fresh meal accompanied by a fresh breeze. On sunny days, head to the park for a picnic lunch, or host friends for al fresco dining on your deck. Thank You to everyone who came out and supported our Cut-A-Thon I raised $230 for the Greensboro Pregnancy Center
• Have Fun: In warm weather, there is no shortage of fun to be had. Go roller skating. Hike a local trail. Attend a baseball game. Play mini golf. Bike to the next town. Take advantage of the great weather by spending time active and outdoors. • Jam Out: For road trips, both long and short, backyard barbecues and more, the right playlist can create the perfect vibe. When making the playlist, think about the songs that evoke your favorite sun-and-fun memories. Then, pump up the jams whenever the mood strikes. Be sure you have portable speakers for the season so your summer soundtrack is handy wherever you go. Summer is a state of mind. Get into the mindset without leaving town.

4 Ways to Beat the Summer Heat e ag Taylor’s Garage LLC r a

Here are four ways to make the most of the summer season while staying cool and comfortable.
1257 Bethel Methodist ch rd Burlington, NC. 27217

1. Homemade popsicles. Get the entire family involved in making homemade popsicles -- a sweet treat that can be much healthier than the store-bought variety, depending on what ingredients you include. Consider pineapple chunks, coconut shavings, berries, lime juice, kiwi, yogurt and other fresh flavors for a delicious, nutrient-packed way to cool down on hot summer nights. 2. Get on the water. Keep cool with outdoor water activities. Whether you’re doing something active like kayaking and swimming or just lazing on the river for a day of tubing, be sure you have the right tools on-hand, like the WSD-F30 Pro Trek Smart Outdoor Watch, which is water-resistant up to 50 meters and includes apps for activities like swimming and surfing.

3. Stay hydrated. A hydrated body is like a well-oiled machine. Indeed, staying hydrated helps keep your core body temperature in check. Be sure to drink plenty of water, particularly on the hottest days. At mealtime, select items like gazpacho or smoothies and opt for snacks that have a high-water content, like watermelon, cucumbers and apples.

4. Dress right. The fabrics and colors of your summer wardrobe can make a big difference in the way you feel. Stick to light, loose garments or tech fabrics specifically designed to wick moisture. Some clothing even now comes with SPF for extra sun protection, which could be important if you exercise outdoors or are otherwise spending lots of time in direct sunlight.

Tips to Guard Against Bites and Burns This Summer (StatePoint) For families -- and everybody else for that matter -- protecting skin should be a top summer priority. After all, there is no shortage of summer skin woes you’ll want to avoid. From protecting skin from sun to repelling disease-carrying insects, here are some top insights that will help you and your family enjoy a safer, more comfortable summer.
mailto:info3@unitsnc.com
Sunscreen: Get it Right When it comes to sunscreen, it's important to understand and follow sun safety guidelines. Fewer than half of moms (48 percent) knew the correct amount of sunscreen to apply to the face and body while at the pool, lake or beach, according to a NO-AD Sun Care-commissioned survey on sunscreen. The correct amount of sunscreen to be applied -- or reapplied – is at least 2 tablespoons. More alarming still, the majority of those surveyed (54 percent) believe the proper time to apply sunscreen is as soon as they start feeling their skin burning. Experts say that parents should apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to themselves and children 15 to 20 minutes before going out in the sun in order to give it time to bond to skin, and then reapply at least every two hours or after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating and immediately after towel drying. Unfortunately, 17 percent of moms were unaware that after an initial slathering of sunscreen, they needed to reapply it following extended exposure. Beyond application, the type of sunscreen you use matters, too. Luckily, there are quality products at great value, which means you don’t need to skimp on the amount you apply or reapplication. For example, NO-AD has been protecting families for generations at an affordable price per ounce. And for those who want to avoid added fragrance, parabens, alcohol, retinyl palmitate, BPA and dyes, consider trying NO-AD Naturals Clear Mineral Formula SPF 50, which is developed with naturally sourced active ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, offers broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. Oxybenzone- and Octinoxate-free – both of which are chemicals considered harmful to coral reefs – this is also a good choice for the eco-conscious. Parents take note: the line, which offers great value, also carries pediatrician-tested versions for kids and babies.
114 W. Swannanoa Ave. Space on second floor starts at $150.00
Other safe sun habits include limiting time in the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m, and wearing longsleeve shirts, pants, hats and sunglasses.
Bite-Free Summer Summer days are full of outdoor fun in backyards, parks, baseball diamonds and more. And any time you and your kids are outdoors, you are at risk for insect bites. Unfortunately, a bite can carry risks beyond discomfort. Mosquitoes can carry Zika, West Nile, Dengue Fever and Chikungunya viruses. Consider streamlining skin protection with a two-in-one combination such as BullFrog Mosquito Coast SPF 50 Continuous Spray Sunscreen + Insect Repellent, which is DEET-free, Oxybenzone- and Octinoxate-free, and a good choice when you want to pack light or send kids to camp or sports with a simple sunscreen and insect repellant solution.
Houses and Apartments for rent
You can also dodge mosquito bites by wearing loose long sleeves and pants, particularly on hikes, and by keeping your yard free of any standing water. By knowing the facts, you can better ward off bites, burns and other summer skin pitfalls.

On the one year anniversary we remember James B. Brower Jr. Jimmy was a beloved husband to Brenda for 42 years. He was a great father to Christopher and Mary Alice. He loved teaching he taught English Second Language (ESL)for 25 years. He loved teaching the Hispanic students English. He was a church member at Bethlehem Wesleyan Church in Snow Camp. He was a Sunday School teacher, church board member and played the piano beautifully for the church. He loved all his friends especially the Liberty High School class of 1968. He got to attend to his 50th class reunion two weeks before he passed away.We honor him as we reflect on the legacy and contributions he left behind to his family, friends, church and community. Jimmy had a passion for traveling and for knowledge as he enjoyed reading books, poetry and studying his Bible. Jimmy's relationship for God showed through in his love for his family, church, and students he taught through the years. Jimmy was taken from us too soon but left behind a legacy. His love and service to others and the wonderful memories we made together will never be forgotten. If he were still with us he would say love and honor God, serve others first and live your best life. Make the best of everyday you have left and love each other. Jimmy would remind us of his favorite quote: "It's never too late to be what you might have been" by George Eliot. Love always, Brenda, Chris, Mary Alice Brower

Fun Ways to Keep Kids’ Minds Active in Summer (StatePoint) A vacation from school is no excuse for a vacation from thinking. Not only can learning be made fun, but you can avoid a rusty return to school in the fall by keeping kids’ minds active all summer long. Here are a few fun ways to make thinking and learning a priority, while not detracting from the fun of summer days: • Make the Most of a Trip: From the lifecycle of local wildlife to the accomplishments of a great figure hailing from your destination, there is always an opportunity to learn about science, art, history and more on a trip out of town. Whether you are going on a beach getaway or visiting a major city, ask your kids to research the destination before departure. Not only will this help add meaning to the trip, it’s a fun way for kids to stay intellectually occupied. Then, once you are there, look for educational opportunities like museums, historic sites and guided nature walks.
• Puzzle it Out: Use new tech like ClassPad.net, to give kids the functionality necessary to tackle any math puzzle -- from geometry to graphing to statistics and beyond. A free, all-in-one web-based mathematics creation and discovery resource, kids can use it to catch up this summer or work ahead. With so many ways to make learning fun, you can avoid brain drain in your household this summer for a smoother transition back to school in the fall.
• Learn an Instrument: The summer vacation is the perfect time to delve into the world of music. And new technologies can make the process of learning enjoyable and exciting, as well as help beginners learn to play at their own pace. For example, the CT-X700, a portable keyboard with features that are tailored to casual or beginning players, comes with hundreds of built-in rhythms that span both time and the globe. Young musicians can learn not only how to play an instrument, but also get acquainted with the history of music. The Step-Up Lesson system, which displays proper fingering and notation, is a great way to easily learn songs, while its six-track recorder can quickly capture sudden inspiration. • Play: Whether kids are playing a formal team sport or just going outside and running around, staying active is good for the brain. Indeed,
