Thanks-Living

Count Your Many Blessings

By: Andy Clapp

How many times have we half-heartedly completed a task in our lives? If we think about it, we half-heartedly do many things in our lives, going through the motions of what needs to be done, never fully investing in it. There are days that we half-heartedly approach our work. Maybe there are activities with our children that we engage in where physically we are there, but mentally we are somewhere else. We go through the motions of a holiday and we drudge our way through a service at church. If we are not careful, before long, we find ourselves simply going through motions in every area of our lives. One of the places where we see a nonchalant attitude is in giving thanks, especially when it comes to giving thanks to God. We thank the Lord for something good then carry on with our lives. Psalm says, “I will thank Yahweh with all my heart; I will declare all Your wonderful works.” (Psalm 9:1 HCSB) Are we truly thanks-living beyond a day of thanksgiving? Every year, we gather with friends and family around the table, many of us sharing something that we are thankful for, then we eat six plates full of turkey, ham, potatoes, beans, stuffing, and desserts. We watch football and share stories of days gone by. Then comes Friday. We battle traffic and crowds, going on with our lives as if nothing had happened the previous day. True thanksgiving is so much more than a day set aside by the government. True thanksgiving extends beyond a given day on a calendar. When thanksgiving is an attitude of the heart, we begin thanks-living, in which we are in a constant state of thankfulness and praise. We tell people how God has blessed us. We speak more about what is right in our lives, rather than focusing on all that appears to be wrong. We acknowledge that God has provided for us yet another day and we thank Him for it each day we are given, We appreciate so deeply what the Lord has done that we have to give all of ourselves to Him and live for Him fully. This year, let’s start a new tradition. Let’s become people who are truly thankful from the depths of our soul because of the works of the Lord. Let’s give Him all of the honor, glory, and praise and do so throughout the year, knowing that anything done for the Lord should never be done half-heartedly. Let’s praise Him just as much on November 1st as we do on Thanksgiving Day and carry that throughout the year so that others not only see something different in us, but that they are drawn to a God who can give them such a joy in their lives. Yes, let’s start thanksliving in our lives as there is so much to be thankful for today and everyday!

Liberty Leader Phone 336-404-9791

Volume 16 Issue 11

By Melissa Cole If you only had the things in your life today that you thanked God for yesterday, what would you still have today? Think about that for just a moment. Were you thankful for anything yesterday? What did you get enthusiastic about? Money, a favorite TV show, your football team winning the game? When you think about what you thanked God for yesterday… Would you still have a family today? Or a job? Or a home? Or salvation? It’s so easy for all of us to take the things for granted that we become accustomed to having. We start looking for new things, new excitement in our lives. We forget to rest in a place of contentment and appreciation for the many blessings we already have. I find it so effortless to slip into an attitude of annoyance instead of thankfulness. I’m annoyed I have so much laundry to do, so many meals to cook, so little time for sleep. Instead I should be thankful I have those sweet children, that I prayed for, to make laundry for me to do, meals for me to cook and sleep for me to lack. I slip back in time to when I was so overjoyed to fold those adorable little sleepers that I had just taken out of the dryer, when I lovingly made homemade baby food and lived on just a few hours of sleep a day. I have prayed for these children and all the responsibility that comes along with them. Sometimes, more often than I’d like to confess, I have to put my attitude in check and remember to be thankful. We easily forget that everything on this earth can be taken away at any moment. Nothing on earth is guaranteed, not even for a minute. Take a moment today, and every day, to count your many blessings. There is always something to be thankful for. When you start looking for those blessings, the attitude of annoyance quickly fades away and your outlook changes. Looking back on my own life, at the times I thought I had the least, there were so many things to still be thankful for. If I had only looked at life with an attitude of thankfulness, I would have seen how blessed I truly was. The things you take for granted are the same things other people are praying for. Remember that and be thankful. Just as that old hymn “Blessings,” written by Johnson Oatman says, “Count your many blessings, name them one by one, count your many blessings, see what God hath done.” He is always working in your life, even when you can’t see it.

Guilford County’s Family Justice Center Offers Friends Against Fraud Guilford County Family Justice Center’s Elder Justice Committee will host Friends Against Fraud, an educational program that empowers aging adults to learn and share information about frauds and scams to protect themselves and others. The free educational programs are open to the public and lunch will be provided. Pre-registration is required, one week prior to each event and can be completed online at www.corpguard.org/register or by calling 336-497-5615. Programming will be provided at the following times and locations: Friday, November 2, 2018 at 11:30 am at First Baptist Church, 1000 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27401 (in partnership with Well•Spring Solutions). Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 11:30am at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1301 Alamance Church Road, Greensboro, NC 27406 (in partnership with Caregiver Connect, Inc.). Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at 11:30am at Christ United Methodist Church, 410 N. Holden Road Greensboro, NC 27410 (in partnership with AARP). Friends Against Fraud is a unique program as it was created by partners from a variety of disciplines including law enforcement, human services, private non-profits and more. The program focuses on empowering older adults by arming them with information on how to recognize frauds and scams. The program seeks to address the growing concerns surrounding fraud and exploitation among aging adults in Guilford County. According to ARRP, thirty-seven percent of people age 65 and older report being victims of financial fraud, however only five percent of fraud victims make a report to law enforcement. Locally, law enforcement reports identity theft and credit card fraud amongst the top crimes reported by residents age 65 and older. Friends Against Fraud is a program of the Guilford County Family Justice Center’s Elder Justice Committee. The committee is a diverse partnership of members committed to the shared responsibility of enhancing the community’s knowledge, resources, and response to elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. These three free events in November are sponsored by the Junior League of Greensboro, Corporation of Guardianship, and the Elder Justice Committee. The Guilford County Family Justice Center (FJC) is a “one stop shop” for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and elder abuse. Under one roof, 60 professionals from 15 different disciplines work together to provide consolidated and coordinated safety, legal, social, and health services to individuals and families in need. For more information about Friends Against Fraud, or the Family Justice Center, contact (336) 641-7233.

Neighbor Ryan Kivett removed debris/old decking. We enjoyed fellowship while helping to rebuild and replace old, dangerous decking . Do you suffer from stiff or achy shoulders? Does it hinder your day to wake up in the morning and feel that soreness? If so, you are not alone. Approximately four million people in the United States report shoulder pain. Because shoulder pain is so prevalent, Randolph Health Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine is conducting a free shoulder screening. This screening will be conducted on Tuesday, November 13th at 503 N. Fayetteville St., Asheboro from 4 - 6 p.m. The most common causes of painful shoulders are trauma, repetitive motion injuries, sports-related injuries or general wear and tear over time. Chronic overuse is the main reason why people develop shoulder problems. If you are experiencing pain in your shoulder, ask yourself these questions: ■ Is your shoulder stiff? Can you rotate your arm in all the normal positions? ■ Does it feel like your shoulder could pop out or slide out of the socket? ■ Do you lack the strength in your shoulder to carry out your daily activities? If you answered "yes" to any one of these questions, you should register to attend this free screening. To register for this screening, please call the Community Events Desk at (336) 633-7788 to register. Registration is required and space is limited.

November 2018

As we welcome November, and anticipate upcoming Holidays, we reflect back on this year’s events. Thanksgiving is just around the corner and we have so much to be thankful for. Our personal lives changed in an instant on April 25, 2018 as we were flying home from a trip to California to visit family. John ‘Buddy’ Poe suffered a massive stroke on the plane after we left Sacramento, CA. We landed in Salt Lake City, UT and paramedics rushed him to Intermountain Medical Center where he was in Intensive Care for a week. Extensive tests revealed that he had two strokes, one being a blockage and then another causing a bleed on the brain. Because of the bleeding, treatment options were limited and we waited in much prayer for his survival and healing. At this time, Utah could have been a foreign country as we knew no one. After a week in Intensive Care, John was transferred to a Hospital Rehab Facility until he was medically stable enough to fly across the country to North Carolina. Three weeks after landing in Utah, we were able to transfer to High Point Regional Hospital for continued inpatient rehab and remained there for four weeks. After almost two months in the hospital, John came home on June 19th. Now that you know our background story, let us take a moment to Praise Our Lord for his Goodness, Grace and Mercy. God, who is so good to us in North Carolina, was right there with us on the long days in Utah. Doctors in Utah and North Carolina, after viewing multiple CT scans and MRIs, tell us John is ‘lucky to be alive’. He always tells them, “I don’t believe in luck, I’ve got God.” John continues rehab 2-3 times each week and exercises daily at home to regain strength. He has left side paralysis, but is learning to use his leg muscles to take steps with a walker. He is working hard and we continue to desire your prayers. Friends and Family planned a benefit dinner which was held September 8th at the American Legion. The Love and Support of our Community was amazing and we can’t thank you enough. Several local businesses donated items for the dinner and silent auction. Gospel singers donated their time and talent. Friends and Family members donated time and endless hours of work. Many have visited our GoFundMe page and we thank you all. The donations have been a big help as we continue to struggle with massive medical bills from Utah and North Carolina. Liberty may be a small town, but oh how our Community pulls together when there is a need. We both grew up in this area and couldn’t be more proud to call Liberty home. We want to give special thanks to John’s sister and brother-in-law, Linda Smith and Jim Smith, who so unselfishly give of their time daily to care for John allowing Carolyn to return to work. (The doctors would not allow him to come home unless someone is with him daily and the thoughts of a nursing home were unbearable.) Please know how special you are to us and how thankful we are for your love, support and prayers. GOD IS SO GOOD. Love your family and tell them each day how precious they are. This has been a difficult journey, but God amazes us each day with new strength. Thank you Liberty. We love you all.

What Happening Around Liberty

Information Courtesy of our Mayor York and Town Manager Will Doerfer. The Randolph Health medical center special use permit and plans have been approved by Council. Editors comment, “It is exciting to here that a new medical center is in the works. This land is located at intersection of W Swannanoa Ave and S Kirkman St, near the Fire Dept) The Veterans’ Memorial is not completed. Editors comment, “ Please continue to support this great new landmark in town through several ongoing fundraisers” The Mayor has accepted the Mayor’s Fitness Challenge. We will be hosting a group walk at Freedom Park on Saturday 11/3 at 9:00 AM. The Mayor, Sam Varner from Randolph County Wellness and myself will lead the walk. In addition, a private citizen has shown interest in starting a fund raising campaign for the parks and recreation department. It is my understanding that there will be an opportunity to donate to park upkeep. The weather we received as a result of Florence and Michael resulted in minor damage including: Roof of the Parks & Rec office , ABC Store, Dogwood entrance to Freedom Park At least 4 reports of house damage. In addition, we had over 8 million gallons of water flow into the Wastewater Treatment Plant in 3 days and over 150 thousand gallons of sanitary sewer overflows at 9 locations. We have hired a new Parks & Rec Program Specialist, Thomas Hyatt. We’re very excited have him join our team. We continue to seek a qualified candidate for our police department, Patrol Officer. We will be taking delivery of our new leaf/limb truck early next week. This truck will replace the box truck that was over 20 years old and becoming very costly to maintain. Wells 11 and 12 are both functioning as they should at this point. We have some additional tests to complete for Well 11, but it should be online by January. Ridgeback Solar farm on Frances Drive north of Johnson's Mobile Home Park has had their special use permit approved by Council and should be beginning construction in the near future. The Town recently updated the street closure and special event ordinance to make it less difficult to request street closures in Town. Strata Solar Kendall Farm plant is moving along and the support posts have been installed. Ferree Trailers is adding 50,000 square feet of manufacturing space and 24 new jobs. The Downtown Revitalization Grant is officially under way. Charter will be the first to begin removing overhead cables from Swannanoa and rerouting around downtown. Charter is working with the Town and business owners to ensure service is not disrupted. Duke Energy and their subcontractors are in the process of obtaining permits from NCDOT to begin work. Scheduling should begin soon to remove, bore under and replace sidewalk portions as quickly as possible with minimal disruption to sidewalk access. SECU opened on Thursday 10/25 and is working with the Chamber to schedule their grand opening / ribbon cutting.

The Randolph County Economic Development Corporation announced today that IE Furniture has purchased the High Point Furniture Industries facility in the High Point section of Randolph County. The 259,000sf facility is located at 1121 Corporation Drive. IE Furniture manufactures hospitality-related, case goods and institutional furniture. High Point Furniture Industries will contract the manufacture of case goods from IE. The 35 High Point Furniture Industries employees will remain with IE Furniture, and more than 20 additional employees will be added to the Corporation Drive location. The $3 million investment will reinvigorate an existing Randolph County facility, according to the EDC. Clyde Phillips, Chairman of the Randolph County Economic Development Corporation, said “The High Point Furniture Industries property was somewhat underutilized over the past several years, and it was the perfect opportunity for IE Furniture to grow in Randolph County. IE will consolidate its four Triad-area locations, so additional employees will be added to our Randolph County roles in the future.”

5: If you have to travel to multiple locations make a route. Going holiday shopping is like going into battle you need a plan of attack .

6:

Don’t over schedule yourself through the holidays, that puts you more at risk of becoming ill. And lets be honest that makes for a grumpy un-happy holiday.

7: Do not be afraid to say “No” schedule another date to avoid hurting feelings. 8:

Don’t forget about the food! do not overwhelm yourself with dishes you have no clue about. Keep it easy with casseroles, and appetizers ( deviled eggs, sausage balls “ I add Cream cheese to keep mine moist”)

9: Schedule down time for yourself.

Get Your nails done, Go to the gym, spa day, or just kick your feet up by the fire with a nice book.

10: Most importantly remember to just have fun and remember what the holidays are all about. The love and fellowship of family and friends.

This November, Millstone Creek Orchards is hosting their annual Fall Carnivale, and beginning the weekend after Thanksgiving, Mr. and 3 Mrs. Claus are visiting the Orchard for A Millstone Creek Christmas Hayride and Christmas with the Kringles. For event details, please visit millstonecreekorchards.com

Very soon it will be out with pumpkins, and in with Thanksgiving goodies! Fall Carnivale at MCO is the perfect relaxing weekend getaway. Bring your kiddos out for a kids turkey shoot, fall hayrides, scavenger hunts and more! The best part of Fall Carnivale is our “BAKED” tasting event where you can indulge in all our tasty treats to help you prepare the perfect Thanksgiving dinner and get ready for the holiday season.

Christmas Craft Fair at MCO

Saturday, November 10th: 10am-3pm

Support the local crafters and enjoy a little extra seasonal fun with a Christmas Craft Fair! Our Spring Craft Fair was such a blast, that we decided to host a Christmas Craft Fair to create more holiday cheer! Woodworkers, leather craftsman, potters, jewelers and the like will all be showing off their talent on Nov. 10 at the Orchard! The craft fair will be coinciding with our Fall Carnivale, so bring out the whole family for a fun-filled afternoon.

Christmas With The Kringles

Friday, Nov. 23 & 30, Dec. 7, 14, 21, 21: 3:30-8pm Saturday, Nov. 24, and Dec. 8, 15, 22: 3:30-8pm Sunday, Dec. 23rd: 3:30-8pm

Family memories are extra special when they are made at the Orchard! At our Christmas with the Kringles event, all the good little boys and girls visit behind the scenes with Santa and Mrs. Claus and share all their Christmas wishes. The Kringles love roasting hotdogs and s’mores with the kiddos and reading their favorite Christmas story. As Rudolph and all his friends need a lot of energy to deliver presents on Christmas Eve, all guests will also make reindeer food to sprinkle on the front lawn to feed Santa’s reindeer. Guests also receive admission to our Millstone Creek Christmas Hayride event. Limited spaces available. Reservations required.

A Millstone Creek Christmas Hayride

Friday, Nov. 23 & 30, Dec. 7, 14, 21, 21: 5-9pm Saturday, Nov. 24, and Dec. 1, 8, 15, 22: 5-9pm Sunday, Dec. 23rd: 5-9pm

Christmas traditions aren’t complete without A Millstone Creek Christmas adventure! This year, Millstone Creek Orchards is bursting excitement for their first ever Christmas light show! Our hayride trail is beautifully lit with thousands of lights and festive decorations. Along with the hayride, our guests can also pick their own Christmas tree, roast hotdogs and s’mores, decorate Christmas cookies, and end the night with a classic Christmas movie under the stars. Mr. and Mrs. Claus will also be taking pictures with all families and reading a Christmas story.
