Fall has arrived, the season of change all around us. The senses are touched in the season as the coolness of the air is noticed on our skin, our eyes are filled with the beauty of the changing colors of the leaves, and even the aroma of the season is distinct. One of the most drastic changes of the year comes in October, when all that is around us begins to change in an amazing display of a new season’s arrival. Lovers of the season point to the beauty of the change. As the trees prepare to lose their leaves in winter, they put on a show each day before that, exploding with colors from within that garners everyone’s attention. The cooler temperatures are a respite from the overbearing heat of the summer. You know when fall has arrived. You can see it. You can feel it. What was is long since put away for a new season and that change is beautiful. Jesus interacted with many people. Many of those were outcasts, whether it be the tax collectors who were hated for business practices or the lepers who were shunned for their disease. In so many, evidence of change was witnessed in the lives of those who interacted with Christ. The greatest sign of change, however, came from a demon possessed man who lived among the tombs. He met Jesus. Jesus set him free. Everyone took note of the change. Mark tells us about the day when Jesus met the man in Mark 5. Here is what Mark notes about the man’s life before Jesus. Mark said that the man lived in the tombs, could not be restrained, crying out day and night, and cutting himself (vs. 3-5). We learn a little later that the man ran around naked as well and because of all these things, people were afraid of him. Then came Jesus and the man’s world changed. Christ cast out the demons who had tormented the man. After the demons lost their power over the man, a great change is seen in his life. Mark wrote that the people came to see what had happened and “They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been demon-possessed by the legion, sitting there, dressed, and in his right mind.” (Mark 5:15 HCSB) How incredible is that? What had been the man’s appearance and demeanor before was no more! As I think about that passage, I wonder about our lives. Do people see a difference in us because we have met Jesus? Do they see evidence that the power of the Lord has set us free from what we used to be? As Christians, we are called to be ambassadors for Christ each day, living testimonies to the power of God to overcome. No one could deny that the man amongst the tombs had been changed that day. Can they see such a great change in our lives as a result of our meeting with Jesus?

Community Development Block Grant for Infrastructure Project and Purpose Visit www.liberty-nc.com for more information. In early 2019, the State Water Infrastructure Authority (SWIA) awarded the Town of Liberty a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in the amount of $2,000,000 with a $6,000 local contribution, to rehabilitate 15,900 LF of existing 8" vitrified clay pipe (VCP) with new 8" sewer lines or installation of Cured In Place Pipe (CIPP), approximately 72 brick manholes and related appurtenances, and 150 lateral replacements in an area south of west Swannanoa Avenue and west of South Fayetteville Street. The lines and manholes are 49 to 55 years old, and the area has had

numerous Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs), including 11 that reached surface waters. Per the budget there will be three new sewer connections and the abandonment of septic systems; of which one is stated to be paid by Town. Dameron Ave, • W Kime Ave, • S Foster St, • S Fairview St, • W Patterson Ave, and • W Brower Ave. • The purpose of the CDBG program is to benefit the entire community and while the project is specifically sewer line rehabilitation, the entire town will benefit from the grant. The Liberty Leader Newspaper Bits’n’Pieces
Hey everybody. Aren’t you glad that you live in a small town, where folks see you, know you, call you by name? You can sit at breakfast for as long as you like, with friends and neighbors rotating in and out of the seats. Breakfast, yes, and sharing the good news of the day! What if you had a voice to Shout Out to everyone in Liberty at once? But wait; there are many Liberty folks who have moved away! We have family living in other parts of the world, who read the Liberty Leader so that they can keep in touch with their small town happenings. Now you may have a voice as in social media. Bits’n’Pieces, is small town social media in print. If you are a person who may not always enjoy the vastness of the internet, Bits’n’Pieces is just for you. You will find the email address at the end of this article. You may use it to give a compliment to a neighbor who has helped you or a business in town that went beyond the norm to serve your needs. Here is a place where good news happens. Here is a place where you can share tips that you have learned from ‘somewhere’. Here is a tip that you may carry away today! When done cleaning the toilet, put the now-clean toilet seat down onto the handle of the toilet brush. Now it can drip dry right into the toilet. Be sure to remove the brush and stow it away, before someone is in a rush to use the toilet! Use the email below to share an idea, ask a question, or leave a warm comment, which will be shared in this space. That’s right! You will see it right here! This is a place of support and encouragement for our community. This is not an editorial page, or a place to rant and rave about politics or heated issues of the day. There are plenty of spaces where that information is covered in the media. However, if you feel like ranting and raving about something really delightful and great, then this is your spot. It may be a simple comment from a stranger that really stuck with you and encouraged you. It may be a kindness you saw or heard about, anytime (could have been when you were a child), or anyplace (perhaps when you were on a vacation, or business trip), or at work, at home or at a family reunion! Is there something you would like to know more about? Would you like to share a wonderful thought from your journal, or a poem you wrote in honor of Loved One’s passing? Do you have a happy memory of times gone by? Do you have a story to tell? Do you have a home-grown solution, or an old time remedy that has always worked for you? Why keep those wonderful gems to yourself which could help at least one other person along the way? And remember to come and visit Bits’n’Pieces if YOU would like a little help along the way. You are welcome anytime!

Liberty Chamber of Commerce Monthly Newsletter written by: Executive Director; Amanda Pabst The Liberty Chamber of Commerce would like to thank everyone who came to our Annual Fall Taste of the Town Dinner! We had a great turn out once again this year with over 70 members in attendance! A special thank you to our guest speaker RCC President, Dr Shackleford and our special guests; Mayor Filmore York, Town Manager Will Doerfer, House Majority Whip Jon Hardister, Randolph County Commissioner David Allen, Randolph County Commissioner Hope Haywood, and Kevin Franklin with Randolph County EDC for attending our event! We are blessed to have support from our community leaders! President of RCC Dr Robert Shackleford started off the evening speaking about why education is so important to him. He shared with us his journey through life and how he grew up moving around a lot which meant moving from school to school and not getting the proper education he so desperately desired. His childhood adversity is what made him believe in the importance of every student getting a quality education and led him to his career today, as President of RCC. Dr Shackleford and his team are now bringing their positive impact to Liberty. RCC will be opening a “satellite” campus here in Liberty. RCC and First
The Liberty Leader Newspaper Baptist Church of Liberty have joined efforts to allow classes to be taught in the church on a regular basis by RCC instructors. To start, RCC will provide English as a second language, soft computer skills, and GED classes. As the vision progresses, more classes will be available and taught on a regular basis. We are very excited to see the impact and growth this mission will provide to Liberty. Also, at our Fall Taste of the Town event, our Town Manager Will Doerfer gave an update on the Town of Liberty. During his update he shared that Liberty is in the process of partnering with NC Growth to start an incubator. An incubator is an establishment meant to help small business start ups grow. They provide a place that each business can hold an office, meet clients, store their goods, etc. The incubator also provides its start-ups tools such as classes for business plan writing, loan writing, computer skills, etc that will help them grow and succeed in their business ventures. The primary goal and purpose of an incubator is to get a business up on its feet and be able to go out and grow on their own. This is still in the beginning stages of development for Liberty and NC Growth needs feedback from current business owners to help them earn grant money to make this wonderful vision possible. To participate in the survey please contact the Liberty Chamber. Aside from our wonderful guest speakers the night was also filled with delicious food! We would like to thank each and every restaurant from in and around Liberty that donated a dish to be

sampled by our Chamber members! Each restaurant could enter one or all three categories, Best Entrée, Best Side, and Best Dessert. Voting was especially hard this year as all the food was wonderfully prepared. Voting in each category was very close and two categories ended up in a tie! The winners of this year’s Taste of the Town Competition are; Best Entrée Millstone Creek Orchard – Kielbasa Sausage in Byrd’s BBQ Sauce AND Basils- Sweet and Sour Chicken Best Side Liberty Event Center- Cabbage AND Yesterday’s Grill- Broccoli Casserole Best Dessert Millstone Creek Orchard – Fresh Apple Bread with Apple Cider Glaze
Congratulations to our 2019 winners!! Winners receive a free 1year Chamber Membership, free entry into the Christmas parade, and recognition as the BEST in their category! Thank you to our winners and thank you again to each and every participating restaurant! A special thank you for to the American Legion Post #81 for use of their facility to host our event and to Krystal Butler and the Roost at Butler Farm for providing all the Fall décor!

What a great Chamber Event Submitted by Myra Gaddy I had the privilege of attending the neatest event this evening; the Liberty Chamber of Commerce Taste of the Town. Wow! What a treat! Area businesses (that are Chamber members) had an opportunity to showcase some of their amazing creations, and we all got to try them. Yum, yum! And we got to vote for the best dish in three categories: entree', side dish, and dessert. The winners received a trophy. It was NOT fair, because every dish was wonderful! No joke. And if you don't believe me, two out of the three categories ended up in a tie. Now, the list of participating businesses/restaurants is not all inclusive of what the eastern part of Randolph County has to offer, not by a long shot. These businesses (listed on the placemat in the photo) are members of the Liberty Chamber; one participating business, the Liberty Event Center, is not on the printed list, but they presented an amazing cooked cabbage dish(and was a winner!) There are many other great places to eat on the east side of MY county---Muzzie's (Kidd's), Captain Tom's, Silver Spoon, Beaver Creek, Mona Lisa's, Franklinville Diner, Hurricane Jane's, and several more. Dr. Shackleford was the guest speaker, and he outlined the amazing partnership that is being formed between RCC and the town of Liberty. Oh, how I wish the leaders of my beloved hometown of Ramseur, would get their act together and make Ramseur great again (no, not a reflection of any greater political beliefs). I had the best table mates this evening, too. Thanks to Lisa Hayworth, Micki Bare, Commissioners David Allen and Hope Haywood, for sharing such a fun time. I got to see some folks I haven't seen in forever. And yep, I picked a Liberty Chamber of Commerce membership brochure--I'm gonna do it! Just what I needed to make me feel better.

Raking Leaves
Volume 17 Issue 10
Patrick Kennedy wins Patterson Cottage Friends Fishing Tournament
I cut the grass all summer; Pushed that mower around. Now there is no grass to cut; The leaves have covered the ground.
Patrick Kennedy pulled in a 3 pound six ounce bass barely a minute before the horn sounded ending the first Friends of the Patterson Cottage Museum Fishing Tournament. The bass easily won Kennedy the grand prize of $500 for largest fish. The tournament, held September 14 at Tom Meacham’s pond, was a fund raiser for the Friends to help raise money to build a museum in Liberty. Contestants paid $50 each for a chance to win the grand prize. Richard Bailey’s catch of a one pound six ounce bass led every minute but the last one of the hour and half contest. Most other contestants were catching nice sized bream, but nothing to match Bailey’s bass. Then, just as Meacham announced that there was one minute left in the contest, Kennedy began landing his bass. He had already lost a big one earlier in the morning. About the same time, Don Thompson pulled in a one pound and ten ounce bass. In the photo, Kennedy on the right holds his winning catch. On the left is a buddy, Ron Lineberry, on his way home empty handed. The Friends of the Patterson Cottage Museum is a Liberty non-profit organization that supports the Patterson Cottage. The group is currently conducting a fund raising campaign to raise funds to build a museum to house the artifacts in the cottage. This would allow the cottage to be furnished as an 1884 cottage and help preserve and protect the items now housed in the small, unheated building.
I rake the leaves to the curb side To be picked up now and then. I looked outside this morning; They were back in my yard again.
I pile ‘em here and pile ‘em there. I got leaves in my pocket and leaves in my hair. I raked sixteen tons today. I’m hoping for a wind storm to blow these eaves away. There’s no doubt about it; These leaves have got me goin’ I’ll be glad to see the grass again So I can get back to mowin’.
The wind is a monster. It makes my job real hard. I can’t understand why all the leaves in this block Wind up in my front yard. From: Wave Goodbye at the Corner By Thomas C. Green Works by Mr. Green collected and published by his children, Norma and Tim who live in Burlington, NC.

October 2019 You know you want to send some love to a soldier overseas... The hard part is... What do you send? We've compiled a list of ideas to help you pack up that first, or second, or 10th care package!
Treats Soldiers love getting treats from back home, but remember that they need to be non-perishable. If this is your first care package you'll have to do a little guess work but if you are thinking about sending treats be sure to ask your adopted soldier to write back with a list of their favorite snacks. The key to sending treats is to make sure they are portable. Soldiers like to be able to carry snacks on them. This means looking for packaging that is smaller and won't burst open easily. You could also include ziplock bags so that your soldier can portion snacks. Snack bars (we • send a lot of Moose Crunch Bars) Small, hard • containers of snacks Snack cakes • Cheese crackers • Candy (avoid • chocolate) Gum • Sunflower seeds • Nuts • Trail mix • Chips of any kind • Gummies •
Food and Drink Sending food or drinks is a little trickier. The best things to send are things
The Liberty Leader Newspaper that are already prepared, things that will enhance the MREs they receive (Meals Ready to Eat) or quick sources of protein. Here are some ideas: Ramen Noodles • Seasoning salt • Hot sauce • Flavoring packets • for water Individual packets • of condiments Powdered drink • mix Energy bars • Tuna fish • Sardines • Beef Jerky • Summer Sausage • Instant Mac and • Cheese Tea bags • Peanut butter • Coffee Whole • Bean or Ground Red Bull • Monster Energy • Drinks V8 • Perrier • Gatorade •
Toiletries Lots of soldiers say that toiletries are also great to send, but be sure to check-in with your soldier on his or her specific needs. It may not seem that exciting to you, but the soldiers really appreciate receiving personal care items. Here are some things to send: Toothbrushes • Toothpaste • Shaving lotion • Disposable razors • Shampoo • Mouthwash • Baby wipes • Lip Balm/gloss • Lotion • Pain relievers •

Feminine hygiene products Eye drops Foot powder Sunscreen Glass cleaner or lens cleaning cloths (for cleaning sand off their glasses) Axe Body Spray Finger nail clippers Q-Tips First aid kits
Entertainment Entertainment options are great to send as soldiers have downtime to spend while they are not out on a mission. Letter writing • supplies Frisbies/balls • H o l i d a y • decorations Board games • Cards • Books • Journals (Pilot • Precise is often requested) V5 Stick Rolling • Ball Pens

What is this thing called a Makerspace? A makerspace is a collaborative work space inside a school or library for making, learning, exploring and sharing that uses high tech to no tech tools. They provide hands on learning, help with critical thinking skills and even boost selfconfidence. The students at Liberty Elementary are given opportunities to use these Makerspaces in their classrooms and during Encore classes. Students are given challenges to create something specific using the tools given. Often times they are encouraged to write about what they created. Research has shown that Makerspaces can be very effective at developing children’s creativity, critical thinking, and digital skills.

Southern Lemon Pound Cake (From Scratch)
Southern lemon pound cake made from scratch! Easy recipe that bakes up moist, tender with authentic lemon flavor. Uses fresh lemon juice and zest! Prep Time 10 minutes Cook Time 1 hour 25 minutes Total Time 1 hour 25 minutes Servings 12 people
Author Divas Can Cook Ingredients 1 cup unsalted butter room tempt. • 1/2 cup butter-flavored shortening • 2 1/2 cups granulated sugar • 5 eggs room temperature • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • 1-2 teaspoons pure lemon extract • 5.3 oz lemon yogurt • 1/2 cup buttermilk • zest of 2 lemons • Juice of 3 lemons • 3 cups all-purpose flour sifted • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon salt • LEMON SIMPLE SYRUP • 1/2 cup boiling water • 1/2 cup sugar • 3 Tablespoon lemon juice can more if you want more tartness • LEMON VANILLA GLAZE • 1 cup powdered sugar • 2-3 tablespoon lemon juice may need more • splash of vanilla extract • Garnish lemon zest & fresh whipped cream • Instructions Preheat oven to 325 F. • Generously grease and flour a bundt pan. Set aside. • In a large bowl cream together butter, shortening, and sugar at medium speed • Beat in eggs, one at a time, mixing thoroughly between each egg. *see note • Add vanilla extract and lemon extract. • Mix in yogurt and buttermilk. • Mix in lemon zest and lemon juice. • In a separate bowl whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. • Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, mixing well, but gently. • Pour batter into prepared pan. • Shake pan to smooth out and to release any trapped air. • Bake for 1 hour and 25-30 minutes or until moist crumbs cling to toothpick. (Do not over bake as cake will continue cooking as it cools.) • Remove from oven and let cool until pan is warm. • Remove from pan. • Mix together lemon syrup mixture and slowly brush over the cake. Go slowly so the syrup seeps into the crust. You won't need all of the syrup, just enough • light coat. Once syrup has dried and cooled completely, mix together lemon glaze ingredients (adding more lemon juice if needed) and drizzle over the cooled cake. • Let glaze hardened. • Serve with fresh whipped cream sprinkled with lemon zest if desired. • Notes When mixing in the butter, sugar, and eggs, use a medium speed to prevent the infamous pound cake streaks. And go easy after mixing in the flour.
