Meet the Neurosurgery Team The neurosurgery team includes highly experienced neurosurgeons who subspecialize in all major areas of neurosurgery and participate in multidisciplinary programs in trauma, neuro-oncology, and cerebrovascular disease. The St. Elizabeth’s team is led by Stephen Gutting, MD (chief of St. Elizabeth’s neurosurgery division) and Katharine Cronk, MD, PhD. In addition, there is a neurosurgery fellow onsite at St. Elizabeth’s 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These physicians are supported by additional neurosurgeons and a team of neurosurgery fellows who are based at BMC’s neurosurgery department. Patients are admitted to either St. Elizabeth’s or BMC, depending on the type of care needed.

Meet James Holsapple, MD
“
First and foremost, a neurosurgeon is a physician. Although equipped to provide highly specialized surgical care to treat complex nervous system disorders, their approach must be grounded in a thorough understanding of each patient’s wishes, knowledge, expectations, and unique medical background.
”
James Holsapple, MD Chair, Neurological Surgery, Boston Medical Center Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery and Pediatrics, BUSM Residency: Neurological Surgery, State University of New York Medical School: University of Kansas School of Medicine Areas of Special Interest: Brain tumors, stereotactic radiosurgery, pediatric neurosurgery, peripheral nerve, brain trauma, cerebral aneurysm and subarachnoid hemorrhage, surgical management of stroke, trigeminal neuralgia, pituitary surgery, neonatal neurosurgery, hydrocephalus, craniosynostosis, and general adult cranial and spinal neurosurgery.

Dr. Holsapple believes that health care is a partnership between caregivers and their patients. This partnership is built on respect for patient autonomy and honest dialogue between physicians and those under their care. It is only under these conditions that complex “best fit” neurosurgical care can be individually crafted and provided for each patient.
