STA RTER Crisis. Worldwide – but also in the mind of every young graduate. The time is now to carry out the plans that I’ve long been dreaming about. Or else they’ll languish in talks about company cars, the number of holidays and housing loans. Seven years after the heartbreaking choice “What do I want to do in this life?”, a new junction of life inevitably unfolds. The outer world may have designed an bright path, yet I keep dreaming of reaching out for the unexpected and the adventurous, however vaguely perhaps. Easier said than done. When I look around, my friends all seem to be longing for the familiar values in life. Wild dreams of conquering the world are put aside for a tenured job and building a home. Then I read somewhere “If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough”. Life is so easy here, in my favorite city of Brussels. My job, our apartment, they are needles in a haystack. Once quit, they’ll be lost forever. I’m yearning for the afterworks when I’m racing on my favorite bike in my favorite street. So easy. But when my girlfriend got fascinated with the idea of studying in London I felt my dreams and longings return. If I could, I’d just drop everything and rush for the Eurostar. Before I’ll return to an orderly way of life I will grab the chances and head for adventure. If anything, I just feel that I have to, even though the crisis rages through my mind. London, baby. We’re coming. And my favourite bike, I’ll just take it with me. Klaas Dhaene Editor

Tackling the suburbian monotonicity

Unplanned future scenarios The suburb of ‘Hoog Linden’, once created by the 70s Nuclear-Families on a forested hill, is now suffering from the monotone and elderly population. The neighbourhood is at a turning point while losing inhabitants and facing shrinkage. Some unplanned scenarios are tested what would happen if the shrinking of the original inhabitants continued. A core strategy is implemented to counter the shrinkage by the integration of a university campus, while keeping the spatial qualities of the settlement. The campus buildings are embedded in the landscape while the elderly population will adjust their dwellings in order to live together with the students. This corporation between the different generations will transform the area into a vibrant neighbourhood.

Green beach for BXL

The English-style landscape park of ‘Laken’ is the biggest accessible green spot in Brussels - the capital of Belgium- but hardly used due to its disconnectedness with the city and the missing infrastructure. A redevelopment strategy implements a new axis system with a footbridge that will form the backbone for a variety of new recreational functions. The axis provides all the needs for daily use of all kinds of recreation, but also for bigger events such as festivals or travelling circuses. 2012 - In collaboration with Jasper Stroobants - Student competition - BE

Antwerp Newtown Starting from scratch

The proposed masterplan creates two scales within one neighbourhood. A huge square is created to connect the area with the existing city. On the other hand, a dense living quarter is established in the safe environment of a wrapping building containing shops, offices and lofts. The internal pedestrian grid is shaped in order to block long views. This creates a cosiness comparable to historic centres, but within an organised structure. The buildings vary and contain two to six dwellings each, in 3D clusters. All the residences have access to a private garden on the ground floor or rooftop. 2008 - Student work - BE

Winter Circus Ghent

The iconic but abandoned winter circus in the centre of Ghent has to become a new public multimedia centre. The competition proposal removed the roof entirely to create a large central square where all integrated functions can be plugged in. The square was designed to follow the rhythm of the seasons, with ice skating on cold winter days and concerts on lazy summer evenings. The large circling ramp, a relict of the former transformation of the circus into a CitroÍn automobile showroom would be re-used as the main passage. 2012 - In collaboration with SumProject - Invited competition - All images Š SUM - BE

Tsukiji Urban development in the heart of Japan.

31

Tsukiji Residential quarters in Tokyo are the result of a historical underground and the temporality of buildings. This makes them a clew of apartments, streets and pathways in a constant transformation but still on human scale due to small plot sizes and relative low buildings.

It feels like an overgrown village. Since our Western principles fail to explain this urban structure, a research is conducted to uncover the different value of built elements. On the basis of this search, principles are inferred to plan an organic development strategy for the vacant fish market site.

The ancient town of Sea-bruges is clamped between the harbour and its industrial sites. A strong vision is necessary to ensure the livability. In the next stage, an unused dock and industrial terrain is changed to

Shared energy during a 24 hour day cycle

Sharing energy and space, a new way of living and all of this combined with the ‘Enefarm’, a co-generating system, were the ingredients for this architectural research. It resulted in a prototype structure where people with different lifestyles can work, live, and relax. The buildings of the test case switch negative environmental impacts such as condensation or overheating into positive and useful phenomena.

Wrap around A warm school extension

The school ‘Woudlucht’ for children with disabilities needs a doubling in pedagogical space, classrooms and a sports hall. Woudlucht was originally designed in the 70s with the typical pavilion architecture. The masterplan designed a new volume which wrapped the original school structure. The new building is based on the existing pavilion system in a twisted way and defines the new playgrounds. A concrete structure wraps the classes and causes a cocoon with the wooden interior. Each class is designed as a house with a front door, a corridor, the main class, a shared class in between and a terrace for outside lessons or gardening. 2007

Countering Isolated Tokyo Materials

Impressions

The individuality of the International lodge at the University of Tokyo is being tackled by a renovation of eight single rooms into a shared apartment. The original rooms are packed with non-intensive used functions such as a bathroom, kitchen and toilet. In order to give more quality of life, these functions Bare original concrete Furniture layout become shared while reducing the space of the personal bedrooms. The existing technical shafts had to be integrated and internal elements deviate from the orthogonal grid, in order to create visual larger spaces.

Kortrijk Weide

The winning design of this competition for a new school was constrained by a tight budget and a strict maximum of 5300 square meters on the one hand, and a highly demanding program on the other hand. A straightforward series of classrooms on the upper floors allowed for much freedom of layout at the lower levels. The design folds three volumes into each other. The volumes intersect at a two-storey high central space that interacts with the surrounding functions. A large cantilever marks the entrance of the building and guides the visitors entering from the adjacent square. 2012 - In collaboration with SumProject - Invited competition, Laureate - All images Š SUM - BE

Heizel Connected Reviving the Expo 58 site

This site was used to organise the world expositions in Belgium in 1935 and 1958. At this time, it connected the world to Belgium. During the years after, the place lost it grandeur and only the grid, the exposition palaces and the ‘Atomium’ survived the time. The leftover place is filled with the national stadium, parking lots, buildings without context and cheap entertainment. The redevelopment strategy links the surrounding

neighbourhoods with the site and provides the much needed residential expansion area for Brussels. A new railway station is provided and an internal tram system makes car use unnecessary. A footbridge links the station with the exposition hall and the football stadium. This all is grafted on the existing street grid with respect for the cultural heritage. 2010

The Reversed Waterfront Tokyo’s megalomanic expansion into the sea.

73

This master dissertation describes the change of Tokyo’s urban layout from a city once called ‘the Venice of the East’ towards a city without any connection with its waterfront. Keeping the ancient footprint, Japan’s capital evolved into the largest city in the world as an overgrown village. The Metabolism group tried to escape this situation but the city expanded only driven by industry and harbour into the sea.

Twenty years later, these handmade islands were turned into brownfields and former members of the Metabolim group made plans for immense waterfront developments driven by the information economy. How did these makeovers survive the economic bubble burst of 1992 and how did the daring plan of the former Metabolism members influence the more recent developments?
