President’s Message Happy September Everyone! Where did the summer go? It’s hard to believe fall is knocking on the door, although, in Kuala Lumpur we don’t get to feel the change in the weather and see the leaves change color. Maybe this El Nino will finally let up and it will seem like fall when the temps drop back down to the high 20’s! Ha The Board of Directors came back together in early August and held our first board meeting after taking a break for the summer months. Of course, the biggest item on the agenda was our office space. We discussed our options and at the end of August the Executive Board held a separate meeting and made the decision to close the office. This decision was not easy and centered around the effects this would have on our dedicated office staff and how AAM will operate going forward with no office space. Please turn to the back of the magazine on the AAM Bulletin Board page where I will talk more about this decision, why we made it and how we are going to move forward starting at the end of November. I don’t want to dwell on it too long here in what is supposed to be my ‘short message’ to the membership. Instead I want to focus on the many FUN and FABULOUS events, we have coming up in the next few months and really encourage everyone to come out and have a great time. We have our Fall Rug Auction coming up on Friday, 2 September followed by our ever popular ‘Welcome Back’ Shrimp Boil towards the end of the month. October will see us co-hosting our ‘Pink October’ event, this year with The Latin Ladies Association of Malaysia as well as the Association of British Women in Malaysia. This year will be bigger and better than last year, and last year was pretty darn good. Get your PINK ON ladies and come on out for a great time, great food and support a worthy cause. November will bring our 30th Annual Christmas Charity Bazaar once again at the Renaissance Hotel so do mark that one in your calendar – it’s the kick-off to the holiday season. With all that going on, we are going to be very busy over the next little while and I look forward to seeing you at the many events we have planned.

The AAM is having a SALE. We can’t call it a ‘garage sale’ because we don’t have a garage. We can’t call it a ‘yard sale’ because we don’t have a yard. So we will simply say: We are having a sale! With the closure of the AAM office at the end of November, we are selling a whole lot of items we have collected over the years; dishes, art work, selected furniture, mirrors, shelving, bowls, pots & pans and really just a bunch of other stuff. Whatever doesn’t sell will be “donated” to the White Elephant sale table at our Annual Bazaar in November.

Friday, 30 September & Saturday, 1 October 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Come either day and be prepared to cash & carry. If the item is too large for you to pick up on the day you shop, you can come back and pick it up on another day, once you have arranged adequate transportation.

Come One, Come All!

Looking Ahead…

Be sure to mark these dates for activities in October: 04 October – BINGO 05 October– Gentlemen’s Night Out 07 October – Pink October Lunch

Tips For A Secure And Stress Free Move By Debz I find myself in the middle of moving houses as I type this article. I used to live in Lumina Kiara but, despite telling the management there were serious holes in their security, they did nothing to resolve the matter; this resulted in someone gaining access and breaking into one of my vehicles and stealing satellite navigation equipment, some tools and some other personal belongings. I was angry at first, then a little embarrassed that as a security specialist I had been burgled. My anger returned when I scanned the CCTV footage and saw that a scooter rider had just driven in unchallenged. The track he took was one I had pointed out as a weakness only three months before. I was further dumbfounded when I learned that one of the semi-detached houses within the complex had been burgled the previous year. I contacted my landlord and discovered there was no reason for him to get involved. His disinterest was very disheartening. Subsequently I have moved out! Now to the move; it is said that moving house is one of the most stressful things you can do. Well, I refuse to get stressed, and being as many of my friends are currently packing up and heading back to their motherland I thought I would share a few points that may make a move relatively stress-free! First and foremost, whether moving across the street, across the city, the country or the world, always get more than one quote from a reputable moving agency. By getting more than one quote, you will have peace of mind that you are getting a fair price and value for your hard earned money. This can apply if a company is moving you back home as well, you don’t always have to ‘settle’ for the moving agent of their choice – which may not always be the best. Shop around! Once you have secured your mover and settled on a price, follow these tips to make your transition a smooth and (almost) stress free experience. 1. Have a clear out before you pack. The Japanese say you should hold up an object and if it does not bring you joy, get rid of it. So I threw away my scales, my bras, my treadmill, my full-length mirror and I am keeping my ice cream maker! All joking aside, have a de-clutter! I am still not sure why I am carrying downhill and cross-country skis across Asia! 2. Remove all your valuables, jewellery, passports etc. and put them somewhere safe. I put mine all together in a carryon case, which I then locked. Pack a suitcase with at least a week’s worth of clothes. Make sure you have enough of everything, I was so busy packing for my son, who is 18 months, that I seem to have miscalculated what I needed! I spent a week with the choice of formal suits, swimwear or yoga clothes! I’ll be more careful next time and make a checklist. 16

KL American September 2016

3. Remove everything that will be needed to hand over the home you are leaving: remote controls for air con, ceiling fans, etc.; keys including spares; instruction manuals you got when you arrived; final maintenance receipts – I put them all in a box kept secure but accessible in the trunk of the car. 4. Book temporary accommodation nearby. There are many serviced apartments in KL, I booked my family into The Wedgewood Residences for four nights. Being out of the house saves a lot of stress, moving is hard work, and dusty! It was great because after 5PM when the packers left was great! I got to walk away from all the mess, I didn’t have to try and find pots and pans to cook with, and I took long dips in the pool. The added bonus was my suitcase of valuables was safely out of the house. 5. Book your pets into a pet hotel. I have dogs and one of them is very elderly, knowing that she was safely with a trusted minder gave me one less worry.

6. Give yourself an extra day after the movers have emptied the house to get the cleaners in and get the air cons, etc. serviced. 7. Get an agent to do the handover to the landlord. Let them argue the small details, let someone else take on that baggage, and having an agent often makes it easier to get your full deposit back! I have forgotten how many people have told me that. “You never get your deposit back.” This is nonsense, yes you do. 8. If you are leaving the country then being in a serviced apartment has an extra ‘thumbs up’ for being the perfect place to hold a farewell pot luck night! Get your friends to come to you for the last goodbyes, so you do not find yourself running around like a headless chicken.

9. If you are moving to another house in the area then you may want to stay in the serviced apartments for a couple of extra days to save “glamping” on the floor (glamping = glamourous camping) 10. When your boxes arrive, make sure they are put straight in the correct room so you are not moving boxes later. 11. Finally say to yourself “I refuse to get stressed!” and have a glass of wine. Stay safe, stay savvy

All About Ganglion A ganglion cyst is a benign mass commonly found on the back of the wrist and the end of joints in the fingers. It is the most common soft tissue tumours of the hand. These tumours or lumps usually arise from a joint, tendon or tendon sheath. They are filled with a thick fluid (joint fluid) and covered by a thick sheath. Two common location of the cyst (back and front of the wrist) as shown below.

Dr. Terrence Tay MBBS (UM), MS Ortho (UM), MRCS (Edin), CMIA (NIOSH), Fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery (Louisville, USA), Fellowship in Hand, Plastic, Burn and Reconstruction (Tubingen, Germany) Consultant Hand & Microsurgeon Tropicana Medical Centre WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A GANGLION CYST? Ganglion cysts are usually seen as a lump or bump on the hand or wrist. The cause of these cysts may be related to arthritis or an inflammation around a tendon. In some cases, the cause is unknown. It usually occurs singly and in very specific locations but they have been reported to arise from almost every joint. Cosmetic appearance, pain and weakness are the usual complaints and they appear suddenly or in several months. Sometimes, a specific antecedent trauma or repeated minor trauma can trigger the formation of ganglion.

HOW IS A GANGLION CYST DIAGNOSED? Diagnosis of a ganglion cyst is made by the appearance of the mass and its location. Sometimes an x-ray is necessary to rule out bone abnormalities. In a great percentage of cases, the ganglion cyst is painless, but in some patients pain is produced with certain activities. The cyst can change in size or disappear completely on its own. WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR A GANGLION CYST? Treatment is related to the symptoms. If there is no pain associated with the ganglion cyst, treatment can be observation only. A wrist brace may help diminish the size of the cyst. If pain is associated with the cyst or it is large and cosmetically unacceptable to the patient, it can be aspirated with a needle removing the fluid inside. There is a higher chance of recurrence with the aspiration technique than with surgery.

Surgery includes the removal of the cyst and its surrounding membrane and the extension of the cyst into the joint. (Picture below) The excised cyst commonly sent for histopathological examination. Microscopically, the cyst consists of viscous and clear-like mucin which is surrounded by collagen fibres and sparsely lined with flattened cells.

CHOICES OF SURGERY Open removal has been the surgical treatment of choice for ganglion cyst removal, with newer technique of removal using arthroscopy offering some benefits, includingsmaller incisions and therefore leaves smaller scars. Recurrence is seen with all treatment modalities and has been reported to be as high as 10-20%. Regardless of whether the ganglion is removed via open surgery or via arthroscopic excision, when a stalk is visualized, it should be completely removed, or the cyst should be removed at the origin to reduce the risk of recurrence. A recurrence rate of 13-40% has been observed following removal of entire cysts, but when a portion of the capsule is removed as well, recurrence rates decrease to as low as 4%. POST OPERATIVE CARE After surgery, a soft dressing or a resting splint is applied to control post-operative pain. Physical therapy is sometimes necessary if stiffness develop in the wrist or finger. Absentee Voting Information for U.S. Citizens Abroad Make your vote count! Every overseas U.S. citizen is eligible to vote by absentee ballot as long as it is valid and reaches local election officials by the absentee ballot receipt deadline. Unfortunately, late ballots are one of the top reasons that absentee ballots are rejected by election officials. To make the most out of your vote, please follow a few simple steps to make sure that you can vote in the 2016 U.S. elections: 1. Request Your Ballot: Complete a new Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). You must complete a new FPCA after January 1, 2016 to ensure you receive your ballot for the 2016 elections - even if you have completed one before. All overseas citizens must complete a new Federal Post Card Application each year to ensure they are not dropped from the voter register. The completion of the FPCA allows you to request absentee ballots for all elections for federal offices (President, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House of Representatives) including primaries and special elections during the calendar year in which it is submitted. The FPCA is accepted by all local election officials in all U.S. states and territories. You can complete the FPCA online at FVAP. gov. The online voting assistant will ask you questions specific to your state. We encourage you to ask your local election officials to deliver your blank ballots to you electronically (by email, internet download, or fax, depending on your state). Include your email address on your FPCA to take advantage of the electronic ballot delivery option. Return the FPCA per the instructions on the website. FVAP.gov will tell you if your state allows the FPCA to be returned electronically or if you must submit a paper copy with original signature. If you must return a paper version, please see below for mailing options. 2. Receive and Complete Your Ballot: States are required to send out ballots 45 days before a regular election for federal office and states generally send out ballots at least 30 days before primary elections. For most states, you can confirm your registration and ballot delivery online. Check out the FVAP links page for helpful resources that will aid your research of candidates and issues. Non-partisan information about candidates, their voting records, and their positions on issues are widely available and easy to obtain on-line. You can also read national and hometown newspapers on-line, or search the internet to locate articles and information. For information about election dates and deadlines, subscribe to FVAP’s Voting Alerts (vote@fvap.gov). FVAP also shares Voting Alerts via Facebook and Twitter. 3. Return Your Completed Ballot: Please remember U.S. Embassies are not polling places. Same-day in-person voting is not available outside the United States. Some states allow you to return your completed ballot electronically and others do not. If your state requires you to return paper voting forms or ballots to local election officials, you can do so free of charge at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. - Fax, Email, or Internet Some states allow ballots to be submitted electronically. Check the specific requirements of your state since some require you to still mail in the signed paper ballot. - Election Materials Drop-Off at the Embassy U.S. citizens may drop off voting materials to be returned to the U.S. any business day between 9am and 3pm, at the front gate of the U.S. Embassy Kuala Lumpur at 376 Jalan Tun Razak. Place your registration materials or ballots in the postage paid return envelope (provided by your election officials, or use the online templates for registration or ballots) and address your voting materials to the relevant local election officials. Processing time is generally one to two weeks for materials to reach the U.S. postal system. - Use the Malaysian Postal System or Private Courier Service If it’s more convenient for you, you can also return your FPCA or ballot to your local election officials via international mail or professional courier service at your own expense. Affix the appropriate postage to your envelope when sending materials through the Malaysian Postal System. Do not forget to write USA on the address. Learn more at the Federal Voting Assistance Program’s (FVAP) website, FVAP.gov. You may also get information via FVAP’s toll-free telephone number: 1-800-438-VOTE (8683) or by contacting the ACS Unit at KLACS@ state.gov. Remember, make your vote count!

KL American September 2016

Although this was not an AAM event, as President, I was invited to attend the U.S. Embassy party on Friday, 3 June to celebrate the 240th Anniversary of the Independence of the United States. It was a small gathering of about 600+ people and was hosted by the Honorable Joseph Y. Yun. This is the last summer that Mr. Yun will be serving in Malaysia and will be leaving shortly on his next assignment back in Washington D.C.

AAM Celebrates 4th of July BBQ - 3 July Photos by Peggy Uptigrove

A whole bunch of members were in town for the 4th of July BBQ which we celebrated on Sunday, 3rd July. We had burgers from The Blue Cow café and hot dogs on the grill while attendees brought all the salads, side dishes and desserts. A great time was had by everyone that attended. This is one of the FREE members event that we host during the year but people were asked to bring a donation of dog or cat food – and we collected pounds and pounds of it for our charity – the Selangor SPCA. Thank you everyone that came out and made this event a success.

A Letter from the President….. As I started to say on page 4, The Board of Directors has made the decision to close the AAM office effective 30 November, 2016. This date marks the end of our two-year lease on our current unit at the Troika. We did have a one-year option on the space but we have chosen not to exercise this going forward. There are several factors that have led to our decision to close the office and I want to outline those factors below: 1. Dwindling membership numbers. As of the date of writing this letter, our membership currently sits under 90 member families. When we moved to the Troika back in December of 2014 our membership numbers were nearly double this amount. Of course, with the drop in membership numbers there is a drop of membership dues, which help contribute to our bottom line for income. 2. Corporate Partnership dollars were down significantly this year continuing a trend we have seen over the past two years. This is another area that effects our income when our Corporate Partners cut back on their contributions to us. When our Corporate Partners have to cut costs to watch their bottom line, it affects us as well. 3. Overhead. Going forward and taking in to consideration the top two reasons shown above, the cost of maintaining our office creates additional overhead costs. Even after cutting back significantly, salaries, rent, utilities, and other expenses still cost the AAM over RM150,000+ per year. The largest contributor to this is rent at RM96,000. Over the summer, Ann Blacklock and myself spent some time with our agent looking at other rental spaces just outside of the city center. We found a house that would perfectly suit our associations needs and even had ample free parking. However, we felt that the time wasn’t right for moving in to another rental property and thought that decision was better made by the incoming board next year based on membership and income. According to our constitution, after serving as president for two years, I can no longer continue in the role. Since our AGM won’t be held until March of 2017, we didn’t want to commit to a one or two year lease on behalf of the next Board of Directors. We hope that our members understand the reasons why we have made the decisions we have and that you support us moving forward. The AAM is one of the few expat associations that has an office so I am confident we can continue to provide the same level of service to our members without the office. Over the next couple of months, I will continue to share with you how we will design the AAM to continue to function starting in December without an office. Until then, I invite you to send me any questions or comments you may have. I would also ask our members to get involved as it takes volunteers to keep this association going and providing our members an avenue to meet fellow expats while alsogiving back to the community we live in. We can be proud of the influence and contributions we continue to make to this community. Sincerely,

US EMBASSY We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Malaysia enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at http://www. travel.state.gov/.
